Quik Mantis question

2020-08-11 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

I have a quick question re the Mantis. Does it give you the option for typing
in Grade-2 braille, i.e. for turning a row of keys into a Perkins style
keyboard? I sent this to the Mantis list, but never saw my message or any
responses, so I’m posting here. Feel free to respond off-list, since this is
only tangentially Apple related.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Donna that’s weird because someone did respond I think it was Scott but you
can type with the JKLFDS in the editor by pressing F12 to enter this mode but
that’s only in local mode. If connecting to a host device the host device would
have to support this feature!

Re: Update to Orbit Writer

2020-08-11 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi Candy,

The thread I was talking about was on applevis.com Search for Orbit Writer and
you should find it.

On the Windows side of things, Ive been using Narrator. It sounds like that
complicates things further with Orbit Writer.

Re: airdrop

2020-08-11 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi Lorie,

Airdrop uses Bluetooth to do its thing, so bluetooth has to be enabled on both
your Mac and your iPhone. Go to Finder. Then, press Command+Shift+R, and this
will open the Airdrop window. VO to the bottom where it says “allow me to be
discovered by”. There’s a popup with choices of No one, Contacts or everyone.
Once you make that choice, your Mac can be seen by other devices close to it,
like your iPhone. So, if you wanted to, say, send a photo to your Mac from your
iPhone, you find the photo in question, open it, and then VO to the Share
button and double tap it. One of the share options will be Airdrop. When you
double-tap Airdrop, your Mac should come up on the list of devices. Double tap
on the Mac, and your Mac will give you an alert saying that it’s waiting to
receive something from your iPhone. You indicate where you want the photo to
go, I usually put them into my Downloads folder, accept the request, and it
will be transferred. I hope I’ve not missed anything, but hopefully this will
at least point you in the right direction.

Re: Update to Orbit Writer

2020-08-11 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Peggy.
It could be done with Narrator on Windows I expect, though I've never
run an update with Nerrorator to try an update from Orbit Research. If
your husband's computer is running Windows 10, Nerrorator does a
decent job for things like this most of the time. You can bring up
Nerrorator by pressing the Windows control, and Enter keys together.
If on an older OS, you can still try Narrator if you want, but the
command is windows with U. That said, this is Mac Visionaries, not
Windows Visionaries, so I'll leave it at that. :)

Hi my name is Joe and I work at APH in quality assurance. To answer your
question no the Orbit writer won’t connect the same way. The reason the Mantis
does and also our Chameleon does is the new hid standard. Thats the standard
Microsoft apple and others worked on. Its still new and I believe currently
were the only one supporting this. I believe the Orbit does on the Mac but not
on the iPhone currently. If I can help in any other way please let me know.

Hi Traci,
Thanks for the link to the YouTube video. It was interesting that the iPhone
was paired with going to Bluetooth settings and not going into VoiceOver and
Braille settings. I know it’s not documented in the manual, but I do wonder if
that would allow the Orbit Writer as a keyboard to connect? The Mantis is a
keyboard, but of course, it’s a Qwerty, so I don’t know if that makes a
difference. I’m awaiting my unit, so when the Writer comes, I’ll certainly try
to connect a second device and report back.

Re: airdrop

2020-08-11 Thread Pete De Vasto
I would choose everyone for starters. If you do Contacts, that would restrict
access to only people in your Contacts. Once you choose Everyone, you should
see your phone in the device list. Also, you’ll have to make sure Airdrop is
available on your iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Airdrop, and make sure
that Everyone is selected there as well. Sorry to have missed that.

This may sound like a stupid question, but when connecting your echo dot to
your computer, do you in turn lose Alexa’s features, or are those still
available to you?

Re: Mac connected to Amazon Echo

2020-08-11 Thread Traci Duncan
I didn't actually talk to alexa while connected, but I'm assuming she's
available. My Mac is only connected like any other Bluetooth device.

external hard drive

2020-08-11 Thread Lorie McCloud
I have a 2tb external hard drive connected to my Mac with a wire. last night I
got a notification that it hadn't been ejected properly. it was still running
so I checked all the connections and they're solid. my Mac doesn't see it any
more. what might that mean? is the drive not functioning properly or could
there be another reason for this?

thanks.
Lorie

Hi Donna that’s weird because someone did respond I think it was Scott

this mode but that’s only in local mode. If connecting to a host device
the host device would have to support this feature!
