Re: Vmware tools for linux.

Anders:

It's been quite a while, but I did successfully install VMware on my
Airbook a few years ago using just Voice Over. I don't recall the
details.

PS: I have it on pretty good authority a more fully accessible VMware is
slated for release around September timeframe.

Best,

WWDC Releases

2020-06-23 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Ok so having just finished watching the keynote due to not wanting to get up at
5am Nz time,

I'm rather inpressed with what they are saying is going to be coming out in the
new Os versions,

I'm going to assume that like in IOS 13 that somethings wont be available until
time down the track,
But ok fine, so long as they get it right this time and don't have continuous
issues in production like they are still having in 13.

The one big concern I have going forward is only due to my mixed alegance,
That being that I'm using both Mac OS and windows on my 2013 air via bootcamp,

And that is that with the new technology for the mac computer line,
The use of the apple silicon architecture
Will I still be able to run windows via bootcamp or will I have to go to a VM
product like vm fusion which I have but prefer BC or parallels which I believe
is still not accessible to us and doesn't like jaws if it's installed to a
windows vm!

What I do see finally happening here with the new architecture is that mac os
and IOS / iPad os etc will in a few years be one and the same which they have
been working on for a long time now.

More seamless interaction between devices / platforms and a single app store
and app range for all devices.

I'm also interested to finally get to try a beta on my watch once watch os 14
public beta is made available next month,
Now not something just for the developers out there.

I'm also now more interested in the airpods pro and having surround sound type
features fromm them while in use, that could be very cool for live music
situations if concerts are recorded in such formats as dolby atmos etc,

But the real funny one is you have if in the situation your car keys on your
phone,

Your phone gets stolen,
And now will your car also,

I'm glad I'm not a BMW fan,

Pall in all I think this sounds like a good release, and the presentation was
very well done under the circumstances , I'm interested to hear / see what
other companys do now going forward when it comes to conferences and product
releases.
Apple should be bloody proud of the keynote,

Just my thoughts

2020-06-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Supposedly, it should not matter as they both use the iCloud Music Library.
But, I ended up keeping both. Apple Music kept substituting live versions, or
alternative, versions of many of my titles that were ripped from CD’s. The
version that I am used to hearing, is the version that I prefer to listen to.
There are a few half-workarounds that you can do such as search through the
Apple Music catalog for your specific version of the song, but that is not
always successful. There were even a few cases where songs were not available
in Apple Music in my country, but iTunes Match gave me the iTunes Plus version
just fine. My understanding is that, in most cases, if you have both services,
iTunes Match content takes priority. I’ve kept a separate backup of my matched
content just in case anything else happens too. Apple Music likes to replace
your personal copy with the Apple Music high quality version, so if you ever
stopped your Apple Music subscription, you would then lose access to all those
songs.

Later…

Mary,
The VO command shift U will read you the URL of a link on MacOS even in Mail

I think you will find that the car keys on the phone will work in conjunction
with Face ID so I don’t think someone will be able to steal your phone and car.
So it would probably be more secure then an actual key or keyless remote that
someone could use if it fell out of ones pocket or lost ones handbag.

Re: Parler Social in Safari accessibility

2020-06-23 Thread Eric Oyen
Well,
They need to have the audio alternative captcha available for a start. Then
they need to setup the page similar to the look (although not the feel) of
either Facebook or twitter (both of which I find rather easy to get around in
these days).

Now, as for their app, it’s going to have to be massively corrected. All
buttons properly labeled, all edit boxes fully accessible regardless of screen
reader mode, an audio alternative captcha to also be made available, etc. Also,
any and all other form controls, popup boxes, picker items, etc to be made
fully accessible and fully tested.

Yes, I know, it’s a lot of work, but these guys need to know that we are a
growing population class on the web and our voices carry weight now. You might
want to inform them that the entirety of the disabled population inside the US
represents slightly more than $185 Billion annually and that this figure is
growing. The blind alone represent nearly 3/5ths of that figure (because of our
influence with friends, families, associates and their friends). So, to that
end, we, as a class, represent a non-trivial percentage of the overall
population and also represent a very substantial spending base. Just on those
points alone, there should be sufficient justification to fix the problems
while they are still cheap to fix.

The Mac startup chime is making a return in macOS Big Sur

2020-06-23 Thread Brad Snyder
The Mac startup chime is making a return in macOS Big Sur

Mike Peterson

Apple is officially bringing back the Mac startup chime with macOS Big Sur,
four years after removing it in a previous version of the operating system.

The classic Mac sound was removed from Apple's lineup of computers with the
introduction of the 2016 MacBook Pros with Touch Bar. Ever since then, macOS
has been silent on startup.

That changes in the first macOS Big Surbeta. AppleInsider confirmed the chime's
reintroduction on a 2018 Mac mini and a 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Based on social media posts from developers running the first beta, it looks
like the startup chime is widely available on other models, too. It appears
that users can toggle the sound on and off, since there's now a new "Play sound
on startup" option in System Preferences.

Apple first teased the chime's return during its WWDC 2020 keynote. While it
didn't actually confirm the fact, Apple's macOS Big Sur features page does
state that "system sounds are all-new and even more pleasing to the ear," and
were created using snippets of the originals.

During Monday's WWDC keynote, Apple VP of Human Interface Design Alan Dye said
that the new sounds are "familiar to the Mac, but remastered and more refined."

Although a software update in 2016 removed the startup chime, a later update to
macOS Catalina actually added them under-the-hood — though it required a
Terminal command to actually enable them.

I think you will find that the car keys on the phone will work in conjunction
with Face ID so I don’t think someone will be able to steal your phone and car.
So it would probably be more secure then an actual key or keyless remote that
someone could use if it fell out of ones pocket or lost ones handbag.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for this info. The Startup Chime is classic in my opinion and pretty

my 2017 MBP and it worked like a charm. Putting it into System Prefs is just

Apple is officially bringing back the Mac startup chime with macOS Big Sur,
four years after removing it in a previous version of the operating system.

The classic Mac sound was removed from Apple's lineup of computers with the
introduction of the 2016 MacBook Pros with Touch Bar
. Ever since
then, macOS has been silent on startup.

That changes in the first macOS Big Sur
beta. AppleInsider confirmed the
chime's reintroduction on a 2018 Mac mini
 and a 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro
.

While it
didn't actually confirm the fact, Apple's macOS Big Sur features page does

that the new sounds are "familiar to the Mac, but remastered and more refined."

Although a software update in 2016 removed the startup chime, a later update to

2020-06-23 Thread Brad Snyder
True. The start-up chime is iconic. I remember my old Apple IIc had its own
chime sound. I was totally dismayed when Apple did away with it on the 2016
MBPs.
I too have restored the chime on my 2019 MBP 13 and my new mini.
Wish I could get it on my iPhone/iPad. That would be awesome.
