Subject: A big Apple Watch problem, is it possible to fix this or should I just
bite the bullet and retire the watch.

Hello everyone on the list, here’s the situation I have an Apple Watch series
3 that I kept after I upgraded to a series of five. Because of everything it’s
going on my sisters watch is now dying. So I figured I would just erase my
watch and give it to my sister. Apparently not so fast. Number one the Series
III has been sitting in a drawer for six months so I unfortunately could not
remember the passcode. Then while trying to get this fixed, they watch tells me
that too many attempts please reset and repair. Unfortunately VoiceOver was
running so when this potential fix froze there apparently is an alternative
method to accomplish this. The way was explained to me one holds the crown
down, and the button that’s just underneath the crown on the right side forcing
the watch to essentially reboot. Then it is apparently able to hold that same
bottom button down and Shut down then Meares button apparently should appear.
After spending an hour on the phone with Apple today, and having my cited knees
help me, it was determined that the watch was defective. Because the screen is
frozen, and VoiceOver can’t be turned off, sold us the watch cannot be reset.
That has to be sent back to Apple. But because the watch is out of warranty
it’s gonna cost a bundle to fix this. Any suggestions? Or is this really the
end of the road for this device.

Sincerely Maurice Mines.

New display, new buttons.

2020-04-24 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I’ve got a Vario 340 today and since i haven’t played a lot with the VoiceOver
utility to change keystrokes for some common things i am a bit stunned.
For you who know the VarioUltra and other Baum products they have 3 keys to the
left and 3 to the right.
They’re called d1 to d6 for you who might not know that.
Now when i want to assign a command to the d2 and d5 buttons i can’t do that in
the VoiceOver utility because they don’t appear there.
This can’t be a normal behaviour as they seem to be registered somewhere in the
system because when i press them i hear a small ding from my mac which
indicates that they work but has not been assigned to any command.
I have contacted apple accessibility about it but i doubt it will be of any
effect in the near future.
Apart from that the display is really nice and has nice dots.

Re: New display, new buttons.

2020-04-24 Thread Pete De Vasto
Andres,

D2 and D5 are used to pan the display back and forth, so you won’t find them
listed in the VO Utility. Also, I’m pretty sure that most of the commands
involving the space keys will work the same as on other displays. I have a
VarioUltra 20, and the space commands work fine. I’m not familiar with the 340,
how many Braille cells does it have? Just curious. Let me know if you have any
other questions. I’ve only had my Ultra for about two months, but I do love it.

Hi again, Anders,

To demo how D2 and D5 work, start at the beginning of this reply and start
reading exclusively in Braille. You’ll find that D2 will move right one display
with, and D5 will go the other way. These keys also behave the same when
reading documents or stuff on the web.

Know the watch is not St. but my current phone. It was synced with the old

I don’t understand why you just didn’t unpair the watch from your iPhone. That
would have wiped the watch and it would have been ready to pair with someone
else’s iPhone.

Re: A big Apple Watch problem, is it possible to fix this or should I just bite the bullet and retire the watch.

2020-04-24 Thread maurice mines
This watch was taken out of service six months ago. Under the heading of I know
what’s best for you disabled person the person who was uncaring the watch did
not follow my instructions. Let’s just chalk it up to ignorance about
capabilities of the blind I know that’s probably off-topic here but that’s
basically what happened somebody thought they knew better than me what was
appropriate. Hence the problem so it’s absolutely not about should I have just
unimpaired it from the phone. The watch was erased and then rebuilt but the
salesperson who was helping me set up the new watch didn’t bother to listen to
my instructions. That’s the bottom line.

2020-04-24 Thread Brad Snyder
Yes, it makes a big difference.
If you still have the old iPhone, then you could have unpaired the watch.
I think your only option now is to send it into Apple service to get the watch
reset. I’m not sure what that will cost, and it is up to you to decide if it
is worth it.

2020-04-24 Thread maurice mines
Unfortunately, the cost is roughly 230 US to get this fixed. So the cost is
quite high. Since it is out of warranty. Unfortunately it’s 200 to justify a
new series 3. So it’s a tossup. That’s where the situation is now.

Re: New display, new buttons.

2020-04-24 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Anders,

Pete is correct, the standard chord-commands do work. I strongly recommend that
you spend a lot of time with the Manual for this display. It's a great display,
but it's a bit complicated to learn.

To the left of the spacebar, going from left to right, you will find the
following keys: S1 S2 B9. To the right, again going from left to right, you'll
find: B0, S3, and S4.

Best,
Donna

Re: A big Apple Watch problem, is it possible to fix this or should I just bite the bullet and retire the watch.

2020-04-24 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
So what is the dilemma? Is it weather to get the old watch fixed or to get a
new series three, then it is a no brainer as the cost is less for the new on
and you get another warranty. But if it is bother with the watch at all because
you already have a series 5 then I’d just forget about the old watch, but that
is just me.

Re: world time clock

2020-04-24 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Jason makes a useful suggestion. I've been doing this forever on my
various machines. in fact I find this approach so useful that I've
defined a host of aliases to give me current time in key time zones
around the planet. These are automatically loaded when I open a terminal
session. Here are just a few examples:

alias pst="env TZ=US/Pacific date" #Pacific Time
alias hst="env TZ=HST date" #Hawaii
alias nzt="env TZ=Pacific/Auckland date" #New Zealand
alias act="env TZ=Australia/ACT date" #Sydney
alias wst="env TZ=Australia/Perth date" #Perth
alias jst="env TZ=Japan date" #Japan
alias prc="env TZ=PRC date" #China
alias ist="env TZ=Israel date" #Israel
alias msk="env TZ=Europe/Moscow date" #Moscow
alias cet="env TZ=CET date" #Central European
alias bst="env TZ=GB date" #Great Britain
alias utc=gmt

So, if I want to know the time in China, I simply type prc and press
return

Best,

Janina

Re: New display, new buttons.

2020-04-24 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Based on a quick review of the Web site, the Vario 340 is one of those classic
designs from Baum, where there is no braille keyboard, but there are six
"display keys" to the right and left of the display itself.

I suspect that Apple might not have updated everything that they need to in
order to support it fully. It has a USB Type C port, which suggests it's a
relatively recent design.

I would also expect Linux and BRLTTY to work well with it.

On iOS/iPadOS, go into Settings, Your Name, and swipe right all the way through

Apple ID, then Interact with the table and the devices associated with your
Apple ID are listed further down.

Re: Status of uploads to iCloud

2020-04-24 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Either bring focus to the specific file and it will be announced while focus is
on it, or check within the Status bar of the iCloud window to have the status
announced. If the Status bar is not visible, press cmd-slash for it to become
visible in the window.

Hi,

On iOS/iPadOS, go into Settings, Your Name, and swipe right all the way
through to find the devices connected to your Apple ID.  On Mac, go to
System Prefs, Apple ID, then Interact with the table and the devices
associated with your Apple ID are listed further down.
