Hi Petrus,

Yes the SE is able to run 13.x

I’m using one here for a work phone.

That depends on what 5 it is? If it is just a 5 than I think the latest OS is
IOS 10 and the 5s is up to IOS 12. I think the SE can still be updated too 13.
I actually find the standard voices better then the enhanced voices on all of
the IOS versions and I think I entered the iPhone family with IOS 7.
But like ET said, it might be time to upgrade your phone, but this isn’t always
affordable for some people.

The voiceover voice question has to do with sound quality.
I finally found a discussion thread about this with others noting the same
thing. Daniel who I believe is the UK English voice changed in its enhanced
form a while back. I do not know if it has been improved, or better still
when was the last upgrade to the Daniel voice?
I have an iPhone in the 5 family. it is possiblethat upgrading IOS
itself, or the voice, if I can, will improve things.
for now though the quality clarity and pronunciation is rather dreadful.
I did not want siri, but apple accessibility, who was talking with the person
helping me use the phone suggested the download because voiceover itself was
not working well according to them.
Siri, which was male in this case, sounded worse than the Daniel voice itself.
I believe? Nuance makes the apple voices. Is there any way to reach them
directly?
last of all, I understand there are other options for voices, with my
wondering about direct contacts too, as I will have to walk someone else
through reaching them.
My situation is that since most software generated speech is in a frequency
range that stimulates my brain's dizzy centres, experimenting can make me
rather sick. That is what happened when trying to resolve the Daniel / male
siri situation.
meaning I really want to plan ahead before testing anything further.
ideas?

They do have a headphone jack of sorts.

You get a set of headphones that have the lightening connector on it rather
than the 3.5 mil jack.

according to whom?
I could not use a 7 it has no standard headphone jack.
As expressed if the phone was end of life, you could not buy them new, and
apple would have said as much...and they did not.

I will confirm the model via my apple id, then wait until the CNIB
individual is here again, since the last voice left is unsafe for my use.
I know about the adapters, but as established, until I know the device
is safe for use voice wise, accessories are the least of my focus.

2020-03-23 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Petrus,

I’ve looked at androids and I’ve only found a couple of voices for them,

Might be that we don’t get the same range down here but I thought they were
more limited.

You ready for lock down?

Well some of the people on this list might want to Lynch me if I suggest this,
but have you looked at Android phones as well? They might have some voices that
might be easier on the ear. I haven’t got one myself but I think there are more
voices available for them.

As far as the lack of a headphone jack goes on the new phones,, you do get an

But i don’t know if they update the voices sometimes.
Have you tried other voices such as the american voice Tom or other voices?

That is what happened when trying to resolve the Daniel / male
siri situation.
meaning I really want to plan ahead before testing anything further.
ideas?

RE: The Google News for iOS App, Give It a Try

2020-03-23 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Just to add to this for Petrus,

Yeah we get kind of somewhat over looked here in Nz,

Small nation that keeps our heads down and not worth apple looking at,
4.5 million people and no apple stores other than 3rd party retailers who have
no real knowledge of their products.

It will be interesting to see what google news has to offer.

And if petrus hasn't already said or you haven't already seen it on the news
sites,

We have 48 hours before new Zealand is in a government enstated lock down due
to carona virus.

Hello Petrus,

Wow! I had no idea that Apple News was not available in New Zealand.

Well, I am certainly enjoying the Google News app a great deal more than the
Apple News app. I don’t know why, exactly, but, for whatever reason, I really
like it (smile).

Hi Mark,
Well a few of us here in NZ have been using the Google News App on our iPhone
for quite a while now as we don’t get the Apple News App in New Zealand. I’ve
never understood why Apple has left us out of the News.

Hello All,

Although I enjoy the free version of the Apple News app on iOS, after posting
an article on how to stay up-to-date with the Corona virus outbreak issue, I
explored using the Google alerts service, that was mentioned in the article.

Well, as it turned out, the Google alerts work via email and, as you can
imagine, the last thing I want is even more emails cluttering up my email
Inbox.

So, I began to wonder if there was such a thing as a Google alerts app. As far
as I know, there is not but there is, I discovered, a Google News app for iOS.

I installed it and I must say that I like it a great deal. It seems to be more
customizable than the native Apple News app.

So, if you have not yet done so, download the Google News app and give it a try.

Mark

Hi listers,

One thing I have noticed after updating to Catalina is that moving
messages to a mail box is slow with mail stating busy and then after a pause
finally opening up the context menu and eventually the list to move to a

Does this improve with time? It has been about a week.

Have others noticed this behavior?

I do have a lot of accounts and a lot of mailboxes where I organize
information. I expect I have a lot more mail than the average user.

Re: Mail in Catalina

2020-03-23 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Tim,

I had the slow move happen once before after upgrading and after a
period of time it seemed to improve.

This time I finally noticed that the response time in mail was improved to
almost normal if I didn’t have a lot of mail windows open.

Somehow while I work in mail I end up with many open windows. I have to
remember now and then to look at the window chooser and it may say 12 windows
are open or even more then 20. Once I close them all the app is more
responsive.

I’m not sure how I end up opening so many windows in mail. I am just opening
messages or reading things or sending things and suddenly if I check the window
chooser I have all kinds of mail windows open.

Any idea why that happens?

But, in the meantime closing them all fixes the sluggish response.

Your response stating you have not seen this caused me to keep experimenting
until I found a solution.

I didn’t notice this in my last OS but still had the many open windows issue.

My computer is a 2018 Mac book pro with 16 gigs ram so that should be able to
handle moving a message to a mail box.

Hi Eric,

Yes, that machine should handle things just fine. What process do you use when
opening mail messages? Do you have multiple mail accounts that you're
accessing or just one with many messages? Myself, I do have five main mail
accounts that I'm accessing at any given time. I use the return key to open
the message, then cmd-w to close the message if I don't have to act on it
immediately. cmd-r to reply then cmd-shift-d to send.

HTH.

Re: Catalina: How Would I Put Audio Books on my iPHone?

2020-03-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I tend to prefer the Apple stock apps for reading my audio books, thus when I
use AudioBook Builder to "build" the audio book, it automatically places it
into proper location and makes it the proper m4b format. I guess that it's
entirely possible that VoiceStream Reader does the same thing, but this is what
I'm used to, so it's what I continue to do.

Re: Catalina: How Would I Put Audio Books on my iPHone?

2020-03-23 Thread Dave Carlson
Donna,
When using the iPhone, you could play books by simply placing them into your
music folder as MP3 files, or other audio file types. The problem with that is
that they could be affected by the shuffle feature, so chapters may not play in
sequence. Also you don’t have a convenient way to stop and then pick up again
later at the same point.
The M4B format works in the books app on the iPhone and also in the audio books
player on an iPod. It will resume where you leave off (bookmark) and allows you
to slow or speed up the narrative. The binding process in Audio Book
Binder/Builder does that for you.

Hi,

If Petrus wasn't so far away, I might have to linch him ;). Couldn't fly down
there right now either, so I guess you're in the clear Petrus.

Hope all is well down there for you. My wife is in the high-risk category, and
my daughter just made it back from the UK early Sunday morning, so we're in
self-isolation mode at our place. I'm a geek, so working from home is not an
issue for me. I've also spent hours making our systems remotely accessible to
me.

Hello,
On my iPhone 7, if I press volume button or power (side) button when an alarm

touch ID, the alarm is dismissed.
What is the equivalent for iPhone 10 and newer?

Oh, that makes sense, Dave. I still get a lot of books from Bookshare, and
those can be downloaded as Daisy files, so import nicely into Voice Dream. But
I can see how if you just had a text file, this would make for a better reading
experience.

Re: snoozing vs dismissing alarm with FaceID.

2020-03-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

My understanding is as follows:

1. If Snooze is disabled in the specific alarm settings, just press the side
button or one of the volume buttons to silence the alarm.

2. If Snooze is enabled, use the Home gesture to dismiss the alarm, or the
side button or volume buttons to snooze.

Myself, I don't bother with having snooze enabled, so just have to either press
the side button or the button on my Apple Watch.

Re: snoozing vs dismissing alarm with FaceID.

2020-03-23 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

If you don't wish to have snooze at all, open the Clock app, select the Alarm
tab, double-tap the Edit button, double-tap the alarm you wish to edit, swipe
through the choices and just after the alarm sound/song, the snooze option
should be there. Double-tap on it to toggle on/off. Note that once you've
turned it off, pressing the buttons totally silences the alarm and it does not
snooze. If you want the ability to snooze on occasion, do not disable this
setting. Also, note that there are other configuration options within here
such as having the alarm only make noise on specific days, week days, weekends
etc. You can also have the alarm play music from your library instead of the
stock alert noises. Make sure to download the song to your iPhone if you wish
to use a song from your library.

HTH.

Re: snoozing vs dismissing alarm with FaceID.

2020-03-23 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Yes, I tried using the feature to play a track from my music library and it
would have worked if the track in question wasn’t 20 minutes in length. That is
where I discovered that the alarm stops Automatically after 10 minutes. So I
ended up creating a shortcut so I could play that track each morning without
having to search in the music pp, as Siri was unable to find it as it has a
very hard to pronounce name.

Finding the external DVD drive

2020-03-23 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
I have a dum dum question, I’ve done it once before and totally forgot how to
do it. I’ve got an external DVD drive plugged into my Mac book and am trying
to find a CD with some MP3 files on it and I’ve not got them labeled. How do I
find the DVD drive so I can see what is on the CD?

Re: Finding the external DVD drive

2020-03-23 Thread John Panarese
It should show up on your desktop when the CD is inserted and the drive is
connected. Just open the volume and you should be able to navigate the files on
the CD. It will probably mount in icon view.

If you don’t find it on the Desktop, do CMD + SHIFT + C, to open a Finder
window that should show all the available resources (Macintosh HD, etc…) on
your Mac.

 Hi all,
I have a dum dum question, I’ve done it once before and totally forgot how
to do it. I’ve got an external DVD drive plugged into my Mac book and am
trying to find a CD with some MP3 files on it and I’ve not got them
labeled. How do I find the DVD drive so I can see what is on the CD?

Re: Finding the external DVD drive

2020-03-23 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Thanks again, found the CD I was looking for. I should really get round to
putting Braille labels on the rest of my CDs one day. I know I have my entire
music collection in my iTunes library b ut I’m old fashioned and like to have
the CDs as well.

Re: Catalina: How Would I Put Audio Books on my iPHone?

2020-03-23 Thread Dave Carlson
Donna, I don’t get audio books in text format. They are usually MP3. These can
be played like any music file, but need to be processed into M4B in order to
play properly in the books app or on an iPod.
