Re: Wish List

2019-11-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It looks like the Wish List has been replaced by Up Next. So, if you press the
"Add to Up Next" button, then you can easily choose it at a later time by
checking in your Up Next under Watch Now. That's the best I can figure out.

Is there a VoiceOver Accessible Money Reader for Mac OS Catalina?

2019-11-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am all ready to update my primary partition to Mac OS Catalina but I hate
he idea of giving up the money reader app.

Question:
Does anyone know of a good money reader app that will work in Catalina?

Airport questions

2019-11-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

I have followed Tim's suggestion and am now running the airport app on my
phone. Two Questions:

1. The sonos speakers seem to have a data rate of 866 MBPS which is within the
rate that Tim suggested. But, my Hompod seems to have a rate of 48 MBPS, which
seems awfully low. Why would one be fine, and the other not? And is the
answer to fixing that a faster router?

2. I'm being prompted to change the setting on my Airport Extreme from TCPIP to
Bridge? Why would I be getting this prompt, and what would be the consequences
of changing that setting?
TIA,
Donna

Re: Wish List

2019-11-10 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries
I had read somewhere the option was available bu clicking the
buy/rent button. The dialog must be invisible to Voiceover. Up Next does
not have a wish list. So I surmise that Apple has more work to do.

Is There a Compelling Reason to Update to Catalina?

2019-11-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Just curious. Since I have Mojave working so well on my MBP Mid-2014, is
there a compelling reason to update to Catalina?

I know that, once done, I can then upgrade my Reminders app on iPhone which
is supposed to bring some really great features to bare but , other than
that, from a VoiceOver perspective, can anyone think of some marvelous new
feature that exists only in Catalina?

I am certain I will eventually update to Catalina; I plan on waiting a while
unless there is something that I am missing.

I updated a friend's Mac to Catalina a couple of days ago and, for the life
of me, I could not detect any major differences, from a VoiceOver
perspective.

Oh, by the way, my Mac is too old to use the new SideCar feature.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Re: Airport questions

2019-11-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

For #1, it all depends on the location of the HomePod with respect to the
Extreme. If it's in a different room, separated by a wall then that can affect
the signal. Distance away from the Extreme can also affect the level of
signal. Your HomePod will be connecting using the 5 GHz channels which are
very fast, but don't have the distance range. Was this connection speed check
done while the HomePod was active, or resting? If resting, it may have a
somewhat slower connection speed. For #2, I'm guessing that your Internet
provider (ISP) supplied you with a modem. If so, it's very possible that this
modem is handing out IP addresses using DHCP and NAT. If your Extreme is also
using DHCP and NAT, it's possible that they are conflicting. Putting your
Extreme into Bridge mode is a good idea in this situation, or if you can get
your ISP to put their modem into Bridge mode, that will work as well. The
WifiFI signal should still work fine in Bridge mode, just a change in the
addressing protocols.

Re: Airport questions

2019-11-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
If the Bridged mode is what I think it is, it is probably because your ISP is
using NAT and then your AIRPORT Extreme is using NAT. In some circumstances
mostly when attempting to use VPN software, this double NATTING can cause
problems. If you switch the AIRPORT to Bridged mode, then all of your devices
will be fully visible to the ISP network unless you configure some of the
firewall options.
In terms of the speed you mention, I am not particularly aware of this view. It
might have to do with distances and or protocols of WiFi being used. The
Extreme supports at list (N), (a) and (b) versions of 802.11 and probably also
the 802.11ac standard. Though I would think even the speed of the HomePod
should be sufficient for most Audio needs.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Thanks, Tim. I will change the Airport to Bridge mode. When I checked the speed
check, both the HomePod and sonos were playing. They are both on the first
floor, while the Airport is on the second floor.

Re: Is There a Compelling Reason to Update to Catalina?

2019-11-10 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Mark,

not really a reason to update but one to wait for 10.15.2 or later: Using
VoiceOver keyboard shortcuts in combination with Option don’t work anymore.
Apple is aware of this and as far as I could find out they are working on a
solution. That’s the only reason I haven’t updated my iMac yet because this is
my productivity machine.

All the best
Jürgen

Re: Airport questions

Thanks Jonathan. I may try moving the Airport down to the first floor. there's
really no reason for it to be upstairs, that's just where we put it.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Is There a Compelling Reason to Update to Catalina?

2019-11-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I have been waiting to upgrade also, mostly because Tidbits.com
on the recommendation of Spam Sieve and others is telling
people to wait as there have been instances where E-Mail gets lost in Catalina.
I am running into an issue with AirPods and Mojave where VoiceOver stops
speaking if tones get played at the same time as speech. . SO, if I hear that
this is resolved I will probably do an upgrade though it have been over a month
since I backed up my system, so that has to be a priority too. I might go down
to the testing lab at work and try testing Catalina with Microsoft Edge Beta if
my Browser team says we need to support Edge.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Does anyone have experience with iExplorer?

2019-11-10 Thread Marcia Yale
I have a bunch of podcasts saved on my iPhone and was told that iExplorer
would give me access to the files so I could move them to, say, either
DropBox or my computer. However, I can't seem to get anything to happen with
it and the only information I can get from it comes from the menus. If
anyone has successfully used it, I'd be grateful for assistance. On the
other hand, if you know of another program which would give me access to
items such as podcasts or books stored on my phone I'd really appreciate the
information. I have tried iExplorer on both my Mac and my PC with the same
negative results.

Safari on a Mac

2019-11-10 Thread Lorie McCloud
I'm still running Mojave but there must have been another update to Safari. I
was reading a blog post earlier and I started at the beginning by pressing vo-a
as I always do. it read but it was skipping parts, making clicking sounds and
starting in the middle of sentences. is there anything I can do to fix this?

thanks.

Talking Dashboard

2019-11-10 Thread Ibraheem Fakir
Hey List,

A while back, I remember coming across a talking dashboard script on this
group. It allowed me to quickly find out battery status, wifi status, disc
storage, and probably a couple other things form a single key stroke. If anyone
has information on where I can get those files to setup on my new Mac, I’d
super appreciate it.

Thanks!

RE: Airport questions

2019-11-10 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi donna,

Re the speed I'm not sure of but as for the change from TCp-IP to bridge,
That makes no sense to me.

TCP is related to where your device gets the IP address for the devices on the
network,
Bridge is more a device in the middle of the system.

TIA,
Donna

RE: Airport questions

From: 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

Subject: Re: Airport questions

That would make sense
And it would then use your ISP's router to push IP addressing out to all
devices and through the bridge
So treat the airport device like an access point.
