Subject: Routers

Hello, need some advice on buying a router. I currently have an AirPort Extreme
and a apple airport express to bridge my connection. My problem is trying to
run a VPN , in which I think I can not run it with a apple router. Most of the
times I am running about 12 wireless connections. But during the weekend its
more like 20 wireless connections because of family visiting! :) Anyways, so i
want something with a strong connection and be able to connect to a property
that is 60 by 170 square feet. so, what type of router should I get? I hear
that the mesh routers are good or I have also read I would be able to keep the
onesHiPatricia,

You say you want to use VPN
What is it your attempting to do with your VPN ?

As tim said the apple devices are pretty good but I'm interested in what your
trying to setup with regard to vpn access. i currently have IfI bought a dual/
flash router? Any advice would be very helpful. Hopefully, it can be one that
is not so complicated. ONe reason I really liked the apple routers because of
their simplicity.

Re: Network harddrive not vissible in finder.

2018-08-20 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi TiM!
You’re always so helpfull to everyone.
This was exactly what i wanted.
I will check things out.
It seems the partition i wanted to share was smaller then i expected so i first
have to format it with diskutility.
One question though.
If i should decide to use the sharing via wan method, how unsecure is this?
I guess i have to use a very secure password to at least try to make it hard
enough for the hackers to access it?
Thanks in advance.

Yes. If the expiration date is tagged in machine readable form, which is

Re: Routers

2018-08-20 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I would suggest delaying purchasing new network equipment as my understanding
is that a new 802.11 standard is being finalized. That being said, most of the
press I have read about mesh networks says they are easy to set up and add new
routers to the mesh as space requires with the only major issue being that each
vendor has its own protocol for maintaining the mesh so you get stuck with that
vendor unless you swap out the entire network.

In terms of VPN, you might have an issue of double NATTING, this can prevent
VPN software from working. Generally these days you need to allow your ISP to
allocate your private address space and not attempt to have your Airport router
do this. That could be an issue if your ISP limits the number of active devices
allowed on your account. If you are using smart devices you also might want to
set up a separate LAN at your house that has no real Internet access to reduce
chances of hacking.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Re: Smart refrigerators

2018-08-20 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Personally, I would look for two things ...

1.) An accessible app

2.) A published accessibility policy from the manufacturer on their
web site. Because, if the company isn't committed to make their products
accessible, the app you can use today will likely become the app you
can't use on some upgrade in the future.

Thanks for all the tips people! Appreciate it!

Jonathan, when you say "click" the topmost cell of the column, do you
mean just VO+command+space or VO+shift+command+space? I thought I
tried both, and neither quite seemed to do what I wanted them to at
least that I could tell!

RE: Routers

2018-08-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Patricia,

My best advice to you is to find someone you know, locally, who has a router
setup and seek their advice. I say this because, these kinds of issues can be
a little tricky and I find it best when one has in-person support to help do
the proverbial lifting.

Router setups are somewhat personal. For example, I use three routers in a
nested configuration; a secure network inside of a secure network. I do this
so that guests do not have access to my home network while having access to the
internet. While many routers do offer dual band networks bands and channels,
along with guest access, I prefer a more secure connectivity profile in which I
control every aspect of the system. Also, I can easily change the password of
the guest / sub-router without worrying about breaking primary device
connectivity. In many instances, I only turn on the guest network when beta
testing un-verified profiles/software or when I have visitors or when repairing
unknown computers. It is a very, very nice setup that I prefer.

So, if you have a neighbor, relative, or friend that you trust, discuss your
options with her/him for he/she can help you not only setup your new network
but, also, help you handle any unforeseen problems.

Mark

Hello, need some advice on buying a router. I currently have an AirPort Extreme
and a apple airport express to bridge my connection. My problem is trying to
run a VPN , in which I think I can not run it with a apple router. Most of the
times I am running about 12 wireless connections. But during the weekend its
more like 20 wireless connections because of family visiting! :) Anyways, so i
want something with a strong connection and be able to connect to a property
that is 60 by 170 square feet. so, what type of router should I get? I hear
that the mesh routers are good or I have also read I would be able to keep the
ones i currently have IfI bought a dual/ flash router? Any advice would be
very helpful. Hopefully, it can be one that is not so complicated. ONe reason
I really liked the apple routers because of their simplicity.

Re: Routers

2018-08-20 Thread Patricia Solis
Hello,

Mark your probably right, since all this is very confusing to me. The only
reason I am trying to run a VPN is because on weekends there is always
family using my wifi and I will feel better if I am secured. I do not know
anyone that can help me with this so will probably have to pay someone.
Although, I am more inclined into buying a Mesh router and like you said have
guess account and have more control over it. Thanks everyone for their
suggestions.

spotlight doesn't work!

2018-08-20 Thread Leo Bado

Hi again listers,

firs of all I want to thank everybody who had responded to my questions
in the past.

Here I come with another question.

Since the last OS minor update several weeks ago I noticed spotlight
doesn't work anymore.  No matter what I write in the edit box I never
get results.

Of course I had tryed re indexing again, I even tryed some terminal
commands I came across on the web but nothing seems to work.

Ultimately I had to install an app called alfred and it's working great
but  I find this spotlight issue disturbing, I even stopped the process
that apparently works in association with spotlight and again, nothing.

any idea?

Re: spotlight doesn't work!

2018-08-20 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I do notice sometimes that the spotlight results are in a table that I need to
interact with. On the topic of Alfred (or is it alford?) I am glad to hear
that you are able to use it with VoiceOver. I had communication with the
developer at one point and he seemed to think that it would not work correctly
with VoiceOVer. There are some very nice functions in it if you purchase it
directly from the vendor, things that can’t be done with the sandbox
requirements of the Apple stores. Sorry about being vague about all this, but I
kinda gave up on learning about Alford probably 5 years ago.

Take care,

Jonathan

Re: Routers

2018-08-20 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

If you are simply looking to create a guest network, then that is an easy thing
to do with in the airport utility. Using the AirPort Utility app, you go under
the wireless tab and you can enable the guest network there. With the guest
network enabled you can direct any family to use the guest network, and you
don’t need to give out your password for them to use your regular network then.
