Hi ET!
Until you actually own a product you don't know what its really like.
I hear this all the time when engineers try too say what a Bill Bradley
modified Neumann u87 microphone sounds like.
I use the Neumann u87 every day in my recording studio and have first hand

Do you play games, do you listen to music, do you use video streaming

Is apps like Youtube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video even accessible with

Basically, will I get any joy from a Apple TV or will I only buy it for

RE: Setting up a mac to use my account

2018-03-14 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah connect to a wifi network,
Then shut the machine down completely

Then hold the letter R and command keys down.
While holding those and keep holding those for approx. 30 seconds,
Turn the power on and keep holding those keys!

This takes you in to the recovery console,
Once in this open disk utility and find the volume at the highest level
It should be one thing lower than the physical drive partition / label.
On that volume you can hit the Shift option and letter E keys,

This wil eraise the active volume on the machine,

Then once the eraise has finished,
Close disk utility and in the list of utilities find the install os option and
follow the prompts from there.

Note this will possibly take time as it's using a connection to the internet to
download the installers for the machine.

Please note you do not partition the entire physical drive as this will then
require a form of installation media like a USB installation drive or
similar.Just eraise the volume which should be if done correctly called
"Macintosh HD".

 hope this helps.

Subject: Setting up a mac to use my account

Hello everyone,

I honestly can't remember if I already asked this, or not. So if I did, I do
apologize.

I have a Mac laptop that was given to me. It was a dear friend's of
mine! It is running Yosemite and can not be upgraded.

When they gave it to me, they didn't clear off their account, from what
I can tell. I don't have any CD's or anything like that to go with it,
or to re-install anything.

So can I somehow set it up to use my account?

If so, what would I need to do?

Also, is there a website I can go to, where I can read about different
Apps I could use with my Mac?

Thank you,

Terri

So I'm seeing strange behavior in Mail on my iPhone X.

When I touch the icon in the dock, it says "No new mail" even if I have ten new

Re: What use do you find from your Apple TV?

2018-03-14 Thread Kliphton Miller
Few things here. The blu tooth keyboard for me works just fine, and I use 2
different ones. The key is, making sure your router is set to direct touch,
then you can navigate any direction you want, even entering text. And I have
been using the appleTV4 since it’s 1st release, now using a appleTV4K, and it
works fine with my bt keyboard also. In regards to fast forwarding and
rewinding, I have no issue there either, this goes with trial and error though.
Your router must be set to follow focus, and you will have no issues
performing fast forward or rewind. As for the music app, I again make sure the
rotter is set to the corresponding setting, and things should work as normal.
People don’t like change, and sometimes this keeps them from exploring options
because things are done differently, but exploring options will grant you a
pleasant surprise.

Yup, I am not even a huge TV watcher, but my family is, and I signed on in the
begining when that plan was only 35 bucks, and I am locked in for life.

In case you haven’t tried it yet, the Xfinity Stream TV app for both
Android and iOS are both excellent, very accessible, and do have
descriptive video that works very well, and is very easy to setup in the

Well, I gave up on the cord cutting and went with Comcast voice guidance.
They have a voice guidance system, much like a screen reader, that works
great and allows me to do everything I need to do. Yes, I’m paying the
price for it, but good things are worth paying for. Good luck with sling
and all the other services, maybe one day I’ll join you.

 Hi all:
I’ve had Directv Now for about two weeks. The service is 90% usable.
You will want to use it on an Apple TV with the remote set to direct
touch. While playing a show, you can swipe across the remote to channel
surf. You can search for content. You can view all networks via the guide.
It is easy to mark and unmark channels as favorites, as well as to view
 only favorite channels.
With the iOS app, you can search for content. You can add shows to watch
list. You cannot view network list, even in the guide. You cannot add
channels to favorites. I have the $35 a month plan, with promotional price
for $10 a month. They also have free Apple tv promotion for prepaying for
service. I plan on trying the others as a free trial and then deciding
 which I want to keep.

A lot, actually. With a post paid account the telco knows the customer
will pay a certain amount monthly. This is not true of prepaid accounts.
It's possible the customer will not use the device much in any given
time period, i.e. prepaid account payments are often irregular and
inconsistent, whereas postpaid account payments are regular and
consistent.

And, while term contracts are rarer today, the historic situation is
that postpaid accounts typically locked the customer into a contract
over a certain period of time, typically one or two years thus adding
yet more stability to postpaid accounts.

As a result telcos have tended to treat services provided very
differently. A prepaid account plan typically provides less.

Re: What use do you find from your Apple TV?

2018-03-14 Thread Cara Quinn
Hey Kliphton,

Thanks for your note. I’m not sure if you’ve read the entire thread so far
before posting this but I’ve actually tried changing the rotor settings via the
keyboard and nothing seems to happen.

I’ve even tried using the remote to change the rotor while using the keyboard
and the keyboard behavior does not change a bit.

So I would sure be happy if you can come back and explain exactly how you are
making this work. You’d be helping make my life a whole lot easier, so I would
really dig it! :)

thanks very much.

Now, as for the cliches about people, please chill out on it. Not just speaking
for myself here, but pretty much everyone here on this list, just in the mere
fact of being here says that there is a certain adventurous spirit among folks
here.

So saying that people dislike change is way too general and kind of a cop out
don’t you think?… :)

Many of us here are early adopters of a lot of technologies, as I am sure you
are also.

Anyway, we are all welcome to our opinions here and put simply, change
depending on why it happens is not necessarily always a good or smart thing.
Personally, having designed UI myself, advised large audiences of UX designers
on good UI and UX design, and also having the pleasure and privilege of being
able to work with absolute experts in the field, I have some thoughts and
opinions on this, which I will stand by. -For now at least. :) If someone wants
to show me I’ve made a mistake etc, then that’s cool too! :) No worries, we all
do it from time to time…

Anyway, thanks for your note, please please please let me know how you are
managing to get your BT keyboard arrow keys to work the way you are mentioning.
I will be very appreciative.

thanks bunches Kliphton, and have a great day!

Cheers!

Your router must be set to follow focus, and you will have no issues

People don’t like change, and sometimes this keeps them from exploring options

If you press the VO keys plus the Function button as you touch the row of

Re: How to make the number row act as function keys on Mac with touch bar?

2018-03-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

It still works that way for me, albeit a limited set. Try using your Keyboard
Practice mode to confirm what is supposed to happen when pressing the specific
key combination. For example, after pressing VO-k to enable Keyboard Practice,
press VO-1 then VO-FN-1 and note the differing commands. Do the same for the
other keyboard combinations. Was there a specific command that you were
attempting to use that would not engage properly for you?

Later...

Re: mail on iPhone always telling me I have no new mail?

2018-03-14 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi there
This isn’t iPhone X specific as said, this is a Voicover bug. I’ve been having
it on my iPhone 7 since iOS 11 came out and I’ve been reporting it to Apple
accessibility with every update since.

Re: mail on iPhone always telling me I have no new mail?

2018-03-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I don't experience this issue on my iPhone 8. Now, I don't have my Mail
updating automatically, so that may be a factor. I do find that when I delete
large numbers of eMails, it does take a bit to update the number though.

Tim,
In my experience this issue comes and goes, one day it will be their and the
next day everything works just fine again. It also usually helps if restarting
your phone, then the issue usually stays away for a couple of days.

Hi, all,

Interesting to hear that so many of you had been experiencing this for a while.
I’ve only been experiencing it for the last couple of weeks. I guess I’ll join
you and send a report to accessibility. It is kind of an annoying bug.
Cheers,

I think the bug has been fixed in iOS 11.3. I'm on the beta cycle and I'm not
having that problem. I was having that same problem on my iPod Touch before I
got my iPhone X though. the update should be coming soon.

Re: What use do you find from your Apple TV?

2018-03-14 Thread Kliphton Miller
Hello, sorry about that statement of some people don’t like change. I run my
own cafe, and those customers sometime get under my skin complaining about
price change, expecting everything to be free. Anyway, I am using a Logitech
k811 BT keyboard, I don’t know if the model matter. As for changing rodder
options, I do it with the Siri remote, not with keyboard. But it still gets
the job done. What keyboard are you trying to use? Again, sorry for the
general statement, meant no disrespect.

Graphene could charge your phone in 7 seconds, CNET

2018-03-14 Thread M. Taylor
Want to charge your smartphone in 7 seconds? Look to graphene
Graphene gets touted as a "wonder material" because of its unique
properties. Here are five potential real-world uses.
By Katie Collins, March 14, 2018 5:04 AM PDT

Graphene is 200 times stronger than steel and lighter than paper and often
referred to as a wonder material. But what can this substance actually do?

Fortunately, graphene had a chance to shine at last month's Mobile World
Congress trade show in Barcelona. Buried away at the furthest point from the
entrance to the convention center was the Graphene Pavilion, where around 25
different graphene-based research projects, including robotics and
wearables, were being shown off.
In the coming years some of these applications will go commercial and we'll
start to see graphene cropping up in phones, wearables and other technology.

Graphene is a thin layer of pure carbon atoms tightly packed in a honeycomb
structure. It isn't manufactured, but instead is extracted from graphite --
a process scientists only succeeded in developing in 2004. The result is a
2D substance that has a number of unusual and desirable traits, including
being extraordinarily thin, strong and flexible.

A graphene insole can be so thin as to make no discernible difference to a
shoe wearer.
Europe is where graphene was first isolated, and so convinced is the EU by
its potential that it's the basis of the bloc's biggest research initiative.
The billion-euro Graphene Flagship program, which hosted the Graphene
Pavilion, is dedicated to finding ways in which the material can be brought
to market.
Here's how graphene may be used in the future.

Smartphones
Graphene may have been hidden away at the back of the show this time around,
but in the coming years it could be responsible for some dramatic upgrades
to phone technology. As well as being flexible enough to be incorporated
into bendable phones in the form of antennas or touch displays, it also has
enormous potential for improving batteries -- often our biggest gripe when
it comes to our phones.
Graphene can be built into the batteries themselves to improve energy
storage and long-term performance, but it can also speed up energy transfer
between a power source and battery exponentially. It acts as a sort of
superhighway for charging, allowing energy to pass through it so quickly
that researchers believe it can charge a phone in 7 seconds.

So how long will this seemingly magical technology take to show up? A
decade? Kari Hjelt, head of innovation for Graphene Flagship, said it would
take as little as two years.
"It's still a young material, so we're actually quite amazed how much it has
developed in only 14 years," he said. "The thing with the graphene is that
it works in so many fields and in fantastic ways, so we have really pick the
ones that are the most promising for Europe and for business."
Phone technology is one obvious use, and 5G network tech is another --
Ericsson used graphene in its own 5G demo at the show. But it's not the only
area where the material can make a difference.

Robotics
One biomedical possibility for graphene is in the improvement of artificial
limbs.
By embedding graphene-based nerve sensors within the top of the limbs, a
person is able to sense and respond to contractions and other movements in
muscles. That helps them control the motion and force of a robotic limb.

Artificial limbs have come a long way in recent years, but they could get
even lighter and more responsive still.
As well as being light and noninvasive, graphene responds quickly to
pressure, ensuring natural movement and grip for the wearer. It could make
future generations of prosthetics more comfortable and responsive than ever
before.

Food identification
Due to graphene's ability to absorb light at almost every wavelength, it can
detect ultraviolet, visible and infrared light with the same image sensor.
A wide-spectrum graphene light camera can see details invisible to the human
eye, and in the demo we saw could differentiate between three different
types of milk -- rice, dairy and almond -- that all look the same.

Graphene could improve food safety.
In the future people, with food allergies could use their phone cameras to
tell if food is safe for them to eat.

Wearable tech
Graphene is also very flexible, making it ideal for wearable technology.
Researchers from the the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Spain have
integrated graphene into UV patches attached to the skin like any Band-Aid
might. The layer of graphene hidden inside is highly sensitive and can
measure heart rate and blood oxygen over skin as well as UV exposure,
providing a miniaturized system that can monitor your health.

Graphene can be embedded in stick-on UV sensors.
Graphene could also be added to smart shoes for benefits including sensing,
cooling and strength. A graphene in-sole from the University of Cambridge
can monitor pressure distribution for podiatry and athletic performance.

One more option should work. Just download the pdf file., then open it from
your mac instead. Maybe it works to save it to iBooks or Voice Stream Reader.

Re: What use do you find from your Apple TV?

2018-03-14 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Kliphton,

thanks very much. I sure appreciate the apology and the assistance too. :)
Hopefully I did not come off too strongly either. It’s not always easy to gage
tone in email.

Yeah, that must be really obnoxious when customers are kind of disregarding the
fact that you are a business and need to make some money so you can keep that
going. Serious kudos to you for being in the restaurant business! You rock! :)
where is your cafe?…

As for the keyboard, I have Apple BT keyboards (both the second and third gen)
I am currently using the third gen with the Apple TV.

After reading your earlier note, I did a Google search to see if I could find
anything out about this and I did find a tip on an Apple Vis forum about
switching the rotor to ‘Follow Focus’ so I tried switching the rotor to this
via the remote and I was able to get the arrow keys to work for the four
directions but only if the Voiceover keys were held down or locked.

Unfortunately, in this configuration, I cannot then use the enter key to choose
options on the Apple TV home screen without then needing to turn off Voiceover.

What rotor option are you using?

this concerns me greatly, as a blind user should not need to press three keys
at a time (control option and an arrow) and need to use two hands vs one to do
what a sighted user can do with only one key press. I.E. If you turn off
Voiceover, all you need to do is simply press an arrow key and the cursor moves
there. When you get where you need to go, you simply press enter and the action
is done.

Why should a user with a disability need to be using two hands, pressing
multiple keys and then also need to toggle VO off simply to accomplish
navigation by way of the keyboard.

This is different from the Mac where Voiceover is meant to avoid key conflicts.
So in this case, this appears to just be arbitrary. -Especially since keyboard
navigation has worked so easily and simply for both sighted and visually
impaired customers alike until now.

Am I doing something wrong? This is supposed to be an easy, enjoyable and
streamlined experience. Yes?…

So are you saying that there is an option that is actually allowing the arrows
and enter key to work as they do with VO off?

Thanks Kliphton, any other suggestions you can offer would be fantastic!

Have an awesome evening!

Cheers!

Interesting,

I take a little issue with the story though as the reporter says that graphene
is a 2d substance.

To my knowledge, a 2d substance in a 3d world is not yet possible. So I’d sure
like to learn a little bit more about this.

On the subject of battery tech, there have been quite a few amazing advances in
the last several years like copper foam for example, which also has some
interesting properties.

Thanks for posting this awesome article!
