Donna,

Yeah I find it to flat and very little definition

I spent a couple of hours using one yesterday and it really takes a lot of
getting use to.

I agree with Simon here. I am not a fan of the MBP keyboard. I find it more
difficult to orient to the keyboard, and I make many more typos than I did on
my 2013 Air..

Give them a try and see which one feels better for you then go back to apple

Subject: More About Buying My First Mac

Hi All,

Thank you for your very informative and helpful responses to my questions. I
can definitely see the advantages of buying an Air, but as has been mentioned,
Mac will discontinue this model at some point. I mostly plan on doing e-mail,
web surfing, and word processing, but might also like to do some recording, and
utilize this computer to do work from home. I also like to chat on line with
Skype and maybe other programs. For years, I’ve used a Windows desktop and
would like a machine that’s powerful, yet portable.

Whether I get the Air or the Pro, would there be any other advantages to a unit
with a touch bar, other than easy insertion of emojis and Touch ID? That’s
something I’ve not gotten into yet, and honestly don’t think I’d be doing it
too much. A couple of friends have indicated that units with touch bars have a
better processing speed, but is that really significant or necessary? In
looking at Macs recently, I notice that ones without touch bars have the
function keys that we’re used to on Windows computers, but the other ones use
the FN and other keys to simulate these functions.

Will keep looking, but meanwhile, thanks for your valuable input. Should you
have any other questions, please let me know.

Rhanda

Ok, this is interesting, supposedly, automatic log in can’t be turned on
because file vault is turned on. I had file vault turned on when I upgraded to
Elcapitan, and that was never an issue.
I don’t recall ever having to make any changes to my settings, so what’s the
difference here, and if I absolutely have to turn file vault off, how do I go
about doing that?

RE: Updating Apple watch, do others have problems?

2018-03-06 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Kawal,

I must admit my watch does take time to update,
But I would suggest if it's not going to be a big issue,
Reset the watch to factory defaults and set it up again.

Just to make sure things are all ok with the setup.

Really, stepping through it like that makes it sound longer and

this explains things some, and your next attempt goes more smoothly.

Re: Iphone question

Hi
Yes you can, no problem, from time to time it might bug you for not having a
Sim card or because you have no cell signal, but further than that no problem.
If I may ask why do you want to do this? Surely getting iPod will be much
cheaper, even getting a iPad with Wi-Fi only.

leave your finger there while holding the phone to the reader
* after a moment, the phone vibrates and chimes, and you're done

Really, stepping through it like that makes it sound longer and
harder than it is. Double press the home button, hold the phone to
the reader, and rest a finger on the home button for Touch ID. The
only way it gets easier is if you're using an Apple Watch. I hope
this explains things some, and your next attempt goes more smoothly.

I have an 8 Plus and she has a 7 Plus.
We surmised that the system was down or working very slowly.
This was the first time, since Apple Pay was introduced, that I
was not able to complete a transaction, successfully.
I called another friend of mine, who lives a couple of states

terminal-based Apple Pay transaction.
So, I suggest that you wait a few days and give it another try,

Just so you know, a few minutes ago, I did successfully reload my

not require a physical terminal, as did my previous attempts, earlier today.

to be up to the business to choose whether they require a PIN. Some,

A Quick Question About Customizing iOS Native Calendar App Alerts

2018-03-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

When I create a new appointment in the native iOS Calendar app, on my 8
Plus, there does not seem to be a way of customizing the appointment
reminder alerts.

For example, I would like an alert reminder for 4 days. However, in the
app, the options go from 2 days to 1 week.

Question, is there a way to customize the appointment reminder alert from
within the native iOS Calendar app, itself?

I ask this because, if I create an iCloud calendar appointment via Microsoft
Outlook, I can customize the alerts to anytime I like.

Sometimes, I'll create the appointment on my phone, when out-and-about, then
modify it, later, when I'm back at home, using Outlook on my Windows PC. It
would be nice to skip this second step, if possible.

Just so you know, the iOS app honors any alert settings set via MS Outlook.

Thank you,

Mark

Voice Over announcing incorrect position of CSS elements

2018-03-06 Thread James AUSTIN
Hi folks

I am in the middle of building a small static website and have run up against a
little problem with Voice Over and the screen-reader-text CSS class. The
screen-reader-text class allows authors to hide information useful to Screen
Reader users from those who do not need it.

On encountering the first link in the main body of the page, VO behaves as
expected; announcing the screen-reader-text 'external' after the link is read
out. With all other links though, the screen-reader-text is announced prior to
the link being read. Where screen-reader-text is used in the navigation menu,
VO initially announces it before the link is read, but reverts to expected
behaviour within the navigation menu thereafter.

Has anyone encountered this and if so, discovered a work around please? I am
running macOS High Sierra with all latest updates

Thanks

Best wishes
James

Re: Voice Over announcing incorrect position of CSS elements

2018-03-06 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Not entirely clear on which system you are testing with.

On the Macintosh, if one is in web group navigation instead of Dom navigation
(as set in the VoiceOver Utility) then often times VoiceOver reads things in
the incorrect order. For example when asking VoiceOver to read a paragraph with
a link in it, the link might get read after the paragraph rather than inline.

I haven’t really paid much attention to how text added by CSS is being handled.
But perhaps you are running into a similar situation.

RE: having mac not go to sleep when closing lid?

2018-03-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Hank,

Are you certain that you do not want the Mac to go to sleep upon closing the
lid?

Were I you, I would not want the screen to remain active when in physical
contact with the keyboard. The heat buildup could cause damage to the unit
and, in fact, may become a fire hazard if the ambient temperature is too high.

For your safety and the safety of the unit, I strongly recommend that you
either don't close the lid or, continue to let closing the lid, put the Mac to
sleep. There is a definite reason why having the Mac go to sleep is the
default behavior of the OS.

How to customize your Calendar settings on iPhone and iPad

With Apple's built-in Calendar app, you have lots of customization options
to make it work the way you need it to.
By Lory Gil, 19 Jan 2018

The built-in Calendar app on iPhone and iPad is not only Apple's specially
designed event tracker, it's also a gateway to many other productivity apps
that sync with it to provide useful information for your daily life. Even if
you use a different calendar service, like Google or Microsoft, you can link
those services to your Calendar app to get the most out of your daily
planning. Apple's Calendar app has lots of dedicated customizations that you
can use to help make it work for you. Here's how to set them up the way you
want.
. How to set up calendar accounts
. How to change the default time zone for calendar alerts
. How to select an alternate calendar type
. How to turn week numbers on and off
. How to turn invitee decliners on and off
. How to manage calendar syncing
. How to set default alert times
. How to set the start of your week
. How to set a default calendar
. How to turn location suggestions on and off
. How to turn Events Found in Apps on and off

How to setup calendar accounts
Whether you're using iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, or a dedicated IMAP account,
you can set it up to sync with the built-in Calendar app on iPhone and iPad.
Note: If you've already set up your email account, you may have already

How to change the default time zone for calendar alerts
By default, your iPhone and iPad will automatically change time zones as you
move about the country. However, you may want your calendar information to
stay in the time zone you live or work in. If you want to change the default
time zone, you can override it in your Calendar's settings.
1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Calendar.
3. Tap Time Zone Override.
4. Turn on the Time Zone Override switch.
5. Tap Time Zone.
6. Search for the city you want to change the time zone to.
7. Tap the city to change the default time zone for your Calendar app.

How to select an alternate calendar type
If you usually follow the Chinese, Hebrew, or Islamic calendar, you can make
that your default calendar type instead of the western one.
1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Calendar.
3. Tap Alternate Calendars.
4. Tap Chinese, Hebrew, or Islamic.

How to turn week numbers on and off
By default, the Calendar app numbers each week in the year. For some, this
is a useful way to quickly see how many weeks have gone buy, but for others,
it's unnecessary information. You can turn this feature off or on to your
liking.
1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Calendar.
3. Turn the Week Numbers switch off or on.

How to turn invitee decliners on and off
If you're big on inviting others to events, you may want to know everyone
that has confirmed and declined the invitation. You may, however, not have
any interest in who is not attending your event. You can turn this feature
off or on to your liking.
1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Calendar.
3. Turn the Show Invitee Declines switch off or on.

How to manage calendar syncing
In order to keep data usage and internal storage to a minimum, your iPhone
and iPad, by default, only sync back one month. If you're likely to be
looking for older event information from your various calendars, you can
change how far back your accounts are synced.
1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Calendar.
3. Tap Sync.
4. Tap the time frame you want to sync back to.

How to set default alert times
You can specify what time you want to receive an alert for an event on your
calendar. This does not override any events that you have manually selected
a notification time. It's for default event notifications for Birthdays,
timed events, and all-day events
1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Calendar.
3. Tap Default Alert Times.
4. Select the alert you want to set a default time for.
5. Select the time you want to receive the alert.

How to set a reminder to leave on time
You can also enable the ability to receive an alert to remind you what time
you should leave in order to make it to your event based on typical travel
time for events where you have an address included.
1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap Calendar.
3. Tap Default Alert Times.
4. Turn the Time to Leave swi
