Re: Apple Pay and Touch ID

2018-03-03 Thread Alex Hall
In general, the process is simply:

* from the lock screen or notifications center, press the home button twice
* your default card will be selected, but you can choose a different card if
you have one
* hold the phone near the reader
* touch the home button to authenticate, or do what I do and just leave your
finger there while holding the phone to the reader
* after a moment, the phone vibrates and chimes, and you're done

Really, stepping through it like that makes it sound longer and harder than it
is. Double press the home button, hold the phone to the reader, and rest a
finger on the home button for Touch ID. The only way it gets easier is if
you're using an Apple Watch. I hope this explains things some, and your next
attempt goes more smoothly.

Choosing my First MacBook, Air or Pro, and With or Without Touch Bar?

2018-03-03 Thread Rhanda Hasley
Hi Everyone,

I'm a long-time PC user with JAWS, but am now on the verge of buying my
first Mac. For several years, I've also been an iPhone user so am familiar
with VoiceOver, even though I realize the Mac is different and involves a
learning curve. However, I love learning new skills so that doesn't bother
me. In fact, I've been studying various materials including Janet
Ingbergt's books, and have looked at different Mac models. I definitely
want a portable Macbook, as opposed to the Imacs, but am wanting various
perspectives on whether to get the Pro or the Air, as well as with or
without touch bars. I'm leaning toward getting a Pro, but know of many
people like the Air and are just as productive with it. I've also read that
getting one without the touch bar would be less expensive. In your opinion,
is the touch bar necessary or advantageous? Or would I do just fine without
it? Whichever way I go with this, I'm trying to get the most for my money
and want a computer that will last me for as long as possible.

Thanks much in advance for your perspectives.

Rhanda

Re: Choosing my First MacBook, Air or Pro, and With or Without Touch Bar?

2018-03-03 Thread Janet Ingber
Hi Randa,
A lot depends on what you want to do on the computer. If you are just doing
basic things like email, word processing, internet browsing, playing music,
etc. then the Air is a good computer.

The Touch Bar is a personal choice. I now have a MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar,
but I don’t use the Touch Bar that much. I just use keyboard commands most of
the time. Since you are an iPhone user you should have no difficulty with the
Touch Bar.

If the Air will meet your needs then I would go with that. The Touch Bar is a
nice feature but it’s a personal choice as to whether you want to spend the
extra money. Anything you can do on the Touch Bar can be done with keyboard
commands.

There are a lot of very helpful people on this list to answer your questions.
Glad you read my book.

Best,
Janet

Touch bar not needed really. I would say go with the pro with out it.
The only weird thing is not having touch id on that one.

2018-03-03 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi there
As already said it all depends on what you use your computer for, are you a
casual user as in internet, email, word processing, music etc. or are you a
power user using CPU intensive applications, running virtual machines etc?

Right now if buying new I personally won’t consider the Macbook Air because it
hasn’t really been refreshed in quite some time.
If not looking for something powerful like the Macbook Pro, then rather look at
the 12 inch Macbook which in my eyes will be a better option than the Air. With
that being said the 12 inch Macbook is also due to get a refresh, since it’s
also esencially still the first generation.
At some point Apple will probably discontinue the Macbook Air entirely and only
have the option of a 12 inch Macbook or Macbook Pro.

As for the touch bar if you decide to go with the Macbook Pro, I don’t have a
lot of experience with the touch bar since I don’t own a MBP with one, but from
what I read and the few times I used a newer MBP, the touch bar isn’t really
useful for a voiceover user and it’s much easier having physical function keys
than to mess around on a touch surface to find a key.

If I have to upgrade my 2015 MBP now,, I’ll go with the touch bar however, but
because of the more USB-C ports on the Macbook’s with the touch bar and not
because I specifically want a touch bar on my laptop. Most of the time when I’m
in the office, I anyway use a full size USB keyboard with my MBP, so for 80% of
the time I won’t even have to think of using the touch bar.

All in all it depends on what you use your computer for and of course also
budget.

RE: Choosing my First MacBook, Air or Pro, and With or Without Touch Bar?

2018-03-03 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:

I don’t believe the touch bar is worth the extra price. If budget is a concern,
I’d get either the Pro or the new Macbook.

The Air is too old. Wait until June when the mac line is refreshed. You can
then pick up some good discounts on refurrbed Macs.

Hi Everyone,

I’m a long-time PC user with JAWS, but am now on the verge of buying my first
Mac. For several years, I’ve also been an iPhone user so am familiar with
VoiceOver, even though I realize the Mac is different and involves a learning
curve. However, I love learning new skills so that doesn’t bother me. In
fact, I’ve been studying various materials including Janet Ingbergt’s books,
and have looked at different Mac models. I definitely want a portable Macbook,
as opposed to the Imacs, but am wanting various perspectives on whether to get
the Pro or the Air, as well as with or without touch bars. I’m leaning toward
getting a Pro, but know of many people like the Air and are just as productive
with it. I’ve also read that getting one without the touch bar would be less
expensive. In your opinion, is the touch bar necessary or advantageous? Or
would I do just fine without it? Whichever way I go with this, I’m trying to
get the most for my money and want a computer that will last me for as long
as possible.

Thanks much in advance for your perspectives.

Re: Choosing my First MacBook, Air or Pro, and With or Without Touch Bar?

2018-03-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

The only thing I can add to what others have said, is that one thing I find
much easier with the touch bar is inserting emojis. I also like having touch
ID. Other than those two things, I'm not really crazy about the touch bar.
Much as I love the size and light weight of the Air, I share the concern that
it will be discontinued. So, unless you're one of those people who uses emojis
every five words, I think you'd be just fine with an MBP without a touch bar.

Good luck with your decision, and have fun!
Cheers,
Donna

Which Stores Accept Apple Pay? The Always Up-to-Date List (iOS & iPhone), Gadget Hacks

2018-03-03 Thread M. Taylor
Which Stores Accept Apple Pay? The Always Up-to-Date List

Apple Pay has been available to use in stores and select apps and websites
ever since its first appearance in iOS 8.1. Now that iOS 11 is out, there
are currently ten different iPhone models that support Apple Pay
functionality without the use of an Apple Watch, and the list of partnered
stores that accept Apple Pay has only grown. Here's our always-up-to-date
list to keep you in the know.

Firstly, since iPhone 6 and later iPhone models have NFC-technology built
in, pretty much any shop that has a functioning contactless reader (and
employees who know how it works) will accept Apple Pay, just like they will
Google Wallet and NFC-chipped cards. Just look for the Apple Pay icon or the
universal contactless smart card reader sign on card readers and
point-of-sale (POS) terminals in stores.

If you want to see exactly which businesses accept Apple Pay right now,
here's a full list for physical locations, as well as places that do not
accept Apple Pay or have been known to disable it entirely. There are also a
bunch of iOS apps that will accept Apple Pay, so scroll down for that list,
too. And if you need help setting up and using it, check out the bottom of
this guide for some quick walkthroughs.
1. Stores That Accept Apple Pay Right Now
2. Stores That Will Accept Apple Pay Soon
3. Stores That Won't Accept Apple Pay Right Now (Or Ever)
4. Apps & Websites That Accept Apple Pay Right Now
5. Apps & Websites That Will Accept Apple Pay Soon
6. Nonprofits That Accept Apple Pay Donations

1
Stores That Accept Apple Pay Right Now
Here's the official list of Apple Pay partners accepting contactless
payments in stores. While it does not include every shop, restaurant, or
service, you can most definitely be sure that it'll work in these places, as
employees have most likely been thoroughly trained to prepare for the
questions shoppers will have.
Anyone with a "(confirmed)" next to their name are retailers who aren't on
Apple's official list, but who have officially stated they accept Apple Pay.

Re: Choosing my First MacBook, Air or Pro, and With or Without Touch Bar?

2018-03-03 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi,

In my opinion, since I've had my first ever mac, the Macbook Pro, since 2012,
yes that long *smile*, that I have managed without the touch bar and will stick
to that unless a future mac inforces me to learn that, which does not bother me
in the slightestt. Personally, my next mac will be the cheaper Macbook Air, but
a lot of that boils down to financial constraints, which of course will be
different to everybody. Not only will the Macbook Air be more affordable; I
don't need all that horsepower offered in a Macbook Pro if all I'm going to do
is somewhat similar to what I currently do on the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and
even this mac: send and receive emails, browsing the web, using iTunes, nothing
complicated and processor intensive at all. I have seen rumours floating about
suggesting a more affordable Macbook Air some time this year so it will be
interesting how that works out.

Re: sending a big attachment on mail, how i know that it finished?

2018-03-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Interesting problem. There is an activity viewer for mail that will list
progress sending and receiving messages, you can find this in the windows
menu. Another possibility is I would expect that you would have a message in
your Outbox until it gets sent.

I also recommend you consider sending large files by placing them in your
dropbox or other cloud file service and then using the share links. Mail
historically is not very good at supporting file transfers. I try to keep
attached file sizes to below 100kb.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: still not able to see Word Count in Pages

2018-03-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Donna,

ON my Macintosh, the word count is immediately after the toolbar. After the
word count is the region that contains the document contents. If you click on
the word count it will provide paragraph character, and page counts.
Best wishes,

Hi!
I think this depends on what tasks you do with your mac.
I mean if you only do web browsing and email you could get an macbook air.
THe macbook air is quite powerful, more than people think.
Just get it with 8 gb ram and 500gb disk and your good to go for many years.

Re: still not able to see Word Count in Pages

2018-03-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

The Character count item should be a menu item. that is, if you've already
made it show the count from the View menu, just VO-space on the Character count
item, then arrow down to Word count. Whatever count that was visible on the
last viewing in that document will be the count that shows next time you open
the document. You can go to that count item at any time to learn the other
counts such as character, paragraph etc.

Re: Choosing my First MacBook, Air or Pro, and With or Without Touch Bar?

2018-03-03 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I wanted to add my own thoughts, having owned an Air and now a Pro with Touch
Bar. I agree that the Bar is unnecessary, making a few things easier, a few
harder, and not offering a distinct advantage for most users. That said, Touch
ID is very nice to have, though if you own an Apple Watch, Touch ID is seldom
used since your Watch can unlock your Mac.

All that said, remember that the non-Touch Bar Pro is less powerful overall. It
also includes only two USBC ports, while the Touch Bar model has four. If
connectivity is an issue and you don't want to buy a dock or hub, this is worth
considering.

The Air is a good machine, too. My sister has had one since fall of 2013, and
the computer is still perfectly fine. However, the Air can't handle intense
applications as well as a Pro, so this decision depends on what you'll be using
it for, as others have said. There is a rumor out today about a new Air coming
out by the summer, so it's worth waiting to see what happens there.

Your final option is the Retina MacBook, a finless Mac powered by a mobile
processor that's incredibly small and light. It's not that powerful, but if you
just want a web browser, word processor, email machine, it might fit the bill.
It costs more than the Air but less than the Pro, and includes just one USBC
port on it. I don't generally recommend this unit, given its lack of power, but
it could work well depending on your use case and size/weight needs.

Overall, I'd ask what you'll use the computer for, as that will inform the
advice of everyone on this list. Any other details you can offer will help,
too. Finally, I really suggest waiting until the summer or fall. I'd be
surprised if the Pro didn't get some kind of update later this year, and the
rumor mill is saying something about the Air as well.

Re: Apple Pay and Touch ID

I never knew I had to double press the home button first. I just hold my phone
near the reader with my finger on the home button, and it goes through, except
for one time, I don't know what was wrong then. I will try double pressing the
home button first next time, to see if it works even better.

RE: Choosing my First MacBook, Air or Pro, and With or Without Touch Bar?

2018-03-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
I’m kind of in a different place again.

I have a mid 2013 mac book air 11inch,
Mine is customised which has given me more benefits in what I’m running
 Now coming up 5 years old I’ts a i7 1.7ghz 8gb ram 500gb harddrive.

I run windows 10 in bootcamp constantly.

The air to me is a good little entry level machine,
2 USB 3 ports, and 1 thunderbolt / mini display port,
The 13 inch has pretty much the same with an SD card reader and if you upgrade
the processor and ssd in them then you have a good machine if they let you
upgrade ram to 16 from the default 8 gig would also give you a lot in a machine

I have looked at a new machine recently and desided that the pro without touch
bar would be the machine for me.

RE: Apple Pay and Touch ID

2018-03-03 Thread M. Taylor
Arnold,

You do not need to press any buttons, first.

The method you described is the correct one if you only have one credit card on
file or if you wish to pay with the default card.

When the phone is in proximity of the terminal, it will automatically wake-up
and the process will begin, just as you described.

So, to be clear, on a non-iPhone 10 device,

1.
With the phone either unlocked or locked, place your registered finger on the
Touch-ID Homebutton of the phone.

2.
Now, simply move the phone close to the terminal containing the NFC reader.

3.
Hold the phone near the reader until you receive hap tic feedback indicating
that the transaction has concluded successfully.

Depending upon the model and iOS version of your Apple device and the model and
software version of the NFC terminal, this process can take as little as two
seconds up to as much as 30 seconds to complete.

Personally, I always make certain that my phone is locked, before beginning any
transactions.

Re: Apple Pay and Touch ID

2018-03-03 Thread Alex Hall
I never knew that! I don't use Apple Pay often, and when I od, it's generally
with my Apple Watch. When I've used the phone, though, I always thought I had
to double press the home button first. Thanks for the correction, and sorry for
my bad information!

Arnold,

You do not need to press any buttons, first.

The method you described is the correct one if you only have one
credit card on file or if you wish to pay with the default card.

When the phone is in proximity of the terminal, it will automatically
wake-up  and the process will begin, just as you described.

So, to be clear, on a non-iPhone 10 device,

1.
With the phone either unlocked or locked, place your registered finger
on the Touch-ID Homebutton of the phone.

2.
Now, simply move the phone close to the terminal containing the NFC
reader.

3.
Hold the phone near the reader until you receive hap tic feedback
indicating that the transaction has concluded successfully.

Depending upon the model and iOS version of your Apple device and the
model and software version of the NFC terminal, this process can take
as little as two seconds up to as much as 30 seconds to complete.

Personally, I always make certain that my phone is locked, before
beginning any transactions.

I never knew I had to double press the home button first. I just hold
my phone near the reader with my finger on the home button, and it
goes through, except for one time, I don't know what was wrong then. I
will try double pressing the home button first next time, to see if it
works even better.

In general, the process is simply:

* from the lock screen or notifications center, press the home button
twice
* your default card will be selected, but you can choose a different

* hold the phone near the reader
* touch the home button to authenticate, or do what I do and just
leave your finger there while holding the phone to the reader

* after a moment, the phone vibrates and chimes, and you're done

Really, stepping through it like that makes it sound longer and harder
than it is. Double press the home button, hold the phone to the
reader, and rest a finger on the home button for Touch ID. The only
way it gets easier is if you're using an Apple Watch. I hope this
explains things some, and your next attempt goes more smoothly.

However, I can tell you that today, both a friend and I were
unsuccessful in getting Apple Pay to work at three different terminals
at three different businesses, on each of our phones.  I have an 8
Plus and she has a 7 Plus.
We surmised that the system was down or working very slowly.  This was
the first time, since Apple Pay was introduced, that I was not able to
complete a transaction, successfully.
I called another friend of mine, who lives a couple of states away,
and he, too, was unsuccessful in completing a terminal-based Apple Pay
transaction.
So, I suggest that you wait a few days and give it another try, say,
sometime after Monday.
Just so you know, a few minutes ago, I did successfully reload my
Starbucks card, via Apple Pay.  Keep in mind that doing so did not
require a physical terminal, as did my previous attempts, earlier today.
