wi fi headphones for my Macbook Pro

2018-02-28 Thread 'andy' via MacVisionaries
Hi all.

When in a pub or cafe trying to get used to my 2014 Macbook Pro, I am very much
aware of the voice-over sounds around me whichenables others to pay attention
in what I'm doing.

I'm soon to visit the Apple store in Glasgow for help with an Iphone and was
wondering if I could possible also purchase a pair of small comfortable
wireless headphones and get them paired to my Macbook.

Never having had such an item, I'm not sure of what to ask for and how much I'd
likely have to pay.

Any advice including brand recommendations and pairing would help me a lot.

Thanks.

Very best wishes.

Andy.

Preparing a Mac for disposal

2018-02-28 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Andrew and Nickus,
Many thanks for your help. I hope to sell or give away the old Mac but if no
one wants it I will have it recycled.
I am a bit paranoid about security and so want to be sure that all my private
data is really gone before moving the Mac on. So can I use the disk utility
part of the recovery manager to securely erase my hard disk and then use the
Install Mac OS part of the recovery manager to re-install El Capitan? Or if I
just use the Install Mac OS part of the recovery manager does that also
reformat my hard disk so that I do not need to use the disk utility?
Best regards…

Paul Hopewell

Re: iPhone question.

2018-02-28 Thread Alex Hall
There are also the screen protectors from Speed Dots. These give you dots in
strategic locations, like the 5 on the keypad or where a back button usually
is. The dots can't move, and some apps' controls won't line up with them, but
they can be a big help if you find you need more tactile landmarks than the
smooth glass of a screen. The website is www.speeddots.com, and believe
www.atguys.com carries them as well.

Re: wi fi headphones for my Macbook Pro

2018-02-28 Thread Alex Hall
For the record, you're looking for bluetooth headphone, not wifi. Just so your
interactions with sales people go more smoothly.

As to which to buy, that depends on a number of factors. Apple's AirPods are
quite popular, and will pair with your iPhone automatically. Once paired, you
can use them on your Mac with no additional pairing needed. They sound good and
don't even have a cable connecting the two earbuds, letting you keep them in a
small case (which also charges them) in your pocket without fear of cables
getting crimped or tangled. However, they don't block out ambient noise, and
their onboard playback controls are very limited compared to others.

There are tons of other options. Earbuds, over-ear headphones, and more, all
bluetooth. Some block a lot of sound rather like earplugs, others don't. Some
have a cords, others don't. Some have great playback controls, some have less,
some have none. Some are $25, some are then times that. Honestly, the best
thing to do is to look online for recent bluetooth earbuds reviews and find
some you really like, always assuming you don't just go for the AirPods.
Incidentally, rumor has it that new AirPods will be released this year, so if
you want some, you might want to get a cheap pair of earbuds and wait to see if
AirPods get updated.

To my knowledge, smartphones and buttons simply don't go together
anymore. Physical buttons mean no touch screen, or at least a
restricted one, which means neither iOS nor Android will run on such
a phone.
What you might consider is keeping an iPhone, or cellular iPad, for
the access and ecosystem you already have. Then, get a simple phone
for actual calls. With iMessages, you could still text on your iOS
device, albeit without SMS messaging, so all you'd lose would be
VoiceOver's telling you about call history and contacts. Just a thought.

Re: Preparing a Mac for disposal

2018-02-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

When you go to re-format your hard disk drive, you should be able to find an
option to “safely erase” it. This is assuming you have a hard disk and not an
SSD. The save erase function does not just mark all sectors as being empty, but
also makes several write passes over each sector of the disk to ensure it can
not be brought to a disk forensics shop for recovery
If you can’t find this option directly, feel free to ask Apple or somebody on
this list can do some research. I haven’t tried to do this in five years, and
disk utility did have some of its functionality removed to make in more
intuitive / simpler to use.
Best Wishes,

Re: wi fi headphones for my Macbook Pro

2018-02-28 Thread 'andy' via MacVisionaries
Hi Alex.

Thanks for all the information you have provided but ear-buds are not for me
I'm thinking. I'd be afraid of loosing one of them and I don't wish to prevent
friends in a pub from talking to me.

My favourite headphones are Senhiezer, pardon the spelling, and they are about
£55.00 but have a cable, but they are of a high quality and fold up into a
pocket.

I just thought that perhaps cable-less phones would be the way to go and I take
your point about referring to them as £"Bluetooth" headphones.

You've given me much to consider so thanks very much for your help.

Very best wishes.

Andy.

For the record, you're looking for bluetooth headphone, not wifi. Just so
your interactions with sales people go more smoothly.

The problem is that it interrupts speech. I can't do vo-a anymore,
 because
I'll usually get interrupted by this partway along and have to re-read
 from
the start of the paragraph I was on. If I switch apps and wait to hear
 the

 that
far. You get the idea. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen
often enough to be disruptive. I understand that I'm the only one for

this is a problem, or so I thought until this thread came along. As I do
 run
macOS betas, I've reported this problem and sent stack shots.

I've found no fix thus far. I've used an external keyboard as well as the
built-in one. I never change activities, manually or automatically. I do
 run
off an archived copy of VO prefs that I've maintained for a few years, so
that could be the problem. Now that I think of it, I should try disabling
Portable Preferences and setting up VO anew, to see if that fixes things.
 I
wonder if anyone else experiencing this issue is using Portable
 Preferences?

Re: Navigating the Mail on Mac

2018-02-28 Thread Matthew Dierckens
Hi, do you answer your first question, if you attach files from finder, it’s
easier than doing it through the attachments menu. So, you find the file you
want, copier, go over to your Mail message, and paste it.
Continue this procedure for as many files as you wish. To answer your second
question, to navigate by subject, you would have to go in to classic view.

God bless.

I just highlighted a few tracks and opened the File menu, and one of the

Make sure your cd’s are music compatible. I think some are just for data, but

Re: Navigating the Mail on Mac

2018-02-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
One: you can select multiple non-contiguous items with the
control-option-command-return keystroke. Once you have all the items selected,
you can use standard commands like drag, copy, delete.

For your second question: I believe a, there is some kind of first letter
navigation in the mail application, I can’t remember if it works for senders,
subjects or both.
There is also if you interact with a row of the list of messages and then move
over to the subject column. Then use the up/down arrow keys without VO it
should just read the subject of the message you have now selected.

The search functionality is also quite useful in Mail. (except on my wife’s
computer where it does not work).

Best Wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Standing on the crossroad.

2018-02-28 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi friends!
I don’t know what to do or think really. Yu know, i got my Iphone stolen a year
ago.
So i bought me an android device and was very happy with that.
Then i bought another Android device which was faster and even more better.
Today my intention was to reset the device back to factory settings because
things were going nuts on it.
So i did that and when i started Talkback on the device the speech was gone.
People on the android list told me that my synth didn’t support my language but
that is the biggest lie in the world.
So i got really pissed off and took out my sim card and put it in the Iphone Se
i got money for from a foundation here in sweden.
It was ment to use it as an extra phone so i could have it if my Android broke
down.
Now its broken down and guess what.
I am back to the Iphone SE.
I am on a crossroad and have to decide wheather to stay the Iphone Way or the
ANdroid way.
I don’t want to start a flame war about operating systems here.
I’ve had enough of that on the eyes-free list.
BUt i want your help to decide.
Now it seems i am very very happy with my Iphone again.
And i can say that one thing that impressed me which i’ve forgot was the
ability to answer phone calls on another apple device.
Another thing that impress me is the braille support on the Iphone and Ipad.
Also the easyness when typing and doing tasks on the device.
I can say i have been testing Android and i think i was quite good on using it
but i never got the hang of talkback and all the strange gestures.
Even though they worked for me they seems to be very clumsy.
I guess i will stay with the Iphone.
What do you all think.
Sorry for the very long post.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Standing on the crossroad.

2018-02-28 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi ET!
It seems that the Android system have some flaws insied.
On the Iphone you can reset it without taking out the sim card.
ON the Android you have to take out the sim card and then reset the phone.
This is because some languages doesn’t have speech support.
So yes the dissition is easy.

On the Iphone you can reset it without taking out the sim card.
ON the Android you have to take out the sim card and then reset the phone.
This is because some languages doesn’t have speech support.
So yes the dissition is easy.

Hi there,
The things that excite or interest us about technology are truly personal
things are they not?
I mean you are the only person using your phone, your computer, your
toaster for that matter.
so, speaking only for myself, I have not ever resonated with tech
decisions made via democracy smiles.
If the individual things that are important to your personal experiences
needs and desire are best managed by the IPhone, then your choice is
made. If those are better done with another platform, again your choice
is made.
I honor your ability to know, on your own, what works for you best of all.

Re: Standing on the crossroad.

2018-02-28 Thread Erik Burggraaf
I feel very lucky. When the technology upheaval took place, windows and
Symbian were on the way out, iPhone and Android were on the way in, I was
running a technology training company, and I got to try and use both. I was
able to justify purchasing both when they were new, and I've been able to
follow their progress for many years. I have substantial money invested in
both application platforms. I love the variety of devices and the carrier
Freedom offered by Android. I love the fact that there are very good phones
at very low prices. I love Android gestures. To me, they make a lot more
sense than some of the iPhone gestures. I love Braille on iPhone. There's
no reason why Braille on Android should be as primitive as it actually is.
The iPhone is fast, powerful, recognizable, and has a lot more
accessibility features, although Android is starting to catch up a little
bit. I don't love the fragmentation of accessibility across Android
devices, and the fact that manufacturers can ignore accessibility standards
when designing their launchers and proprietary software.

I have a high-end HTC phone, and I like it very much. I don't see myself
ever owning an iPhone, but I don't see myself ever being without an iPad,
iPod, or some other high-performing Apple device. I don't use iOS all the
time, but I love having it around for the few times when I want it. I am
not willing to pay the carrier overage that I would have to pay if I switch
to an iPhone. Canadians pay some of the highest cell phone costs in the
world, and anything I can do to keep my costs down I'm in favor of.

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you had with languages. Language
support has gotten much better in the last year or two, but if the phone is
not going to come up talking in your language, then it doesn't meet your needs.

Best,

Erik

Re: iPhone question.

2018-02-28 Thread Alex Hall
Best Buy has them, I believe. Here's the Apple website link for the product:
https://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/
Remember, though, that these are older devices. They run a CPU that's a few
years out of date, and no one knows when or if a new one will arrive. An iPod
should work for a few years, as should any iOS device, but it may well stop
getting updates before long. Just food for thought.

RE: About the iPhone 8+

2018-02-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello E.T.,

I don't know many people who use the 3.5mm adaptor on a regular basis.
However, I have not heard any reports of them being particularly fragile,
either.

Generally speaking, I purchase all of my Apple accessories directly from the
Apple Store.

I have not yet used my 8 Plus with a wireless charger. To be honest, I don't
find the technology all that compelling.

When they come up with something that can charge my phone, through the air,
without the need to place the phone on/near a particular spot? Then, and only
then will I take notice. (smile)

Oh, one more thing, I am amazed at how many people leave their phones in
restaurants that offer wireless charging pads.

As a low vision person, I would never place my phone on a public charging pad,
for any reason.

Mark

RE: wi fi headphones for my Macbook Pro

2018-02-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Andy,

The apple earpods would be an option, that is the wireless earpods which apple
brought out a year or so ago.

I have these for my phone and think they’re pretty good sound and a great size.

I also have a pair of boes Bluetooth headphones which are over the head
They are bulkier than the earpods but again great sound and both Bluetooth and
wired if needed.

The apple earpods fit in to a little plastic box about 30mm * 40mm * 15mm and
charge with a standard usb to lighting cable

Subject: wi fi headphones for my Macbook Pro

Andy.

RE: Preparing a Mac for disposal

2018-02-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Paul,

If you wish to securely wipe your drive then you are best to start the machine
up from a USB or DVD installation disk then run disk utilities from that USB or
dvd media then secure wipe the machines internal drive
And once that is done install the OS to a basic installation and I would stop
at the point where you get asked for the country

This being the point the new user would start the machines setup from.

The reason behind the secure boot from external media is because you can't
secure wipe a drive you are running from.

Good luck.

Best regards…

expensive.

People leaving their phones, Not surprising. I keep mu phone in my
pocket. Look at how many text and walk. Heard on the news tonight that a
pedestrian was so deep into his phone he walked into a fire truck that
had lights and siren going. Remember Pokemon?

RE: Standing on the crossroad.

2018-02-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Anders,

Firstly, stand on the side of the cross roads not in the middle, it's very
dangerous to stand in the middle of a cross roads intersection,

 Back to your android,
When you start up the android after resetting it
You hold two fingers on the screen and if it's a newish OS on the phone,
Keep holding your fingers on the screen.

I found that my android took quite a while before it started talking
With the newist os on it.

 Just a thought.

But hey apple to me is a lot easier to use than android and that the talkback
voices aren't anywhere near as good quality.

But really it's up to you.

Everyone is different in what they are use to and feel comfortable using.

Good luck with what you go with.

Hi friends!
I don’t know what to do or think really. Yu know, i got my Iphone stolen a year

So i bought me an android device and was very happy with that.
Then i bought another Android device which was faster and even more better.
Today my intention was to reset the device back to factory settings because

that is the biggest lie in the world.
So i got really pissed off and took out my sim card and put it in the Iphone Se

I may get a couple spares since they are so small, easy to lose. I use
neckloops both wired and BT. The BT ones are expensive and do not have user
replaceable batteries so I tend to limit their use.

I agree, in many cases stick to OEM items. You know, cheap becomes
expensive.

People leaving their phones, Not surprising. I keep mu phone in my pocket.
Look at how many text and walk. Heard on the news tonight that a pedestrian was
so deep into his phone he walked into a fire truck that had lights and siren
going. Remember Pokemon?

I'm going to pass on wireless charging for now. I like the concept though.

Also of interest is the wireless charging pad, is Belkin good?
Thanks for feedback.

RE: Standing on the crossroad.

2018-02-28 Thread Karen Lewellen

Gosh I'm honored my words resonated.
Seriously, in a different lifetime I spent several years introducing
people to technology for the first time. Lots of them had heard stories
of what there were supposed to be if they were a truly good example, yet
equally
unfortunate, insistence of what they could never be...according to
another's dictionary.
Speaking only for myself I came to believe there is profound magic in
reminding people there is power and freedom in remembering they have
choices, are the only souls inside their bodies, and examples of human
art that will never be duplicated again, no matter if they share labels
with others.

But that is just me smiles.
thanks for seasoning some of those choices with all you provide here.
Sincerely,
Karen

Hi there,
The things that excite or interest us about technology are truly personal
things are they not?
I mean you are the only person using your phone, your computer, your toaster
for that matter.
so, speaking only for myself, I have not ever resonated with tech decisions
made via democracy smiles.
If the individual things that are important to your personal experiences needs
and desire are best managed by the IPhone, then your choice is made. If those
are better done with another platform, again your choice is made.
I honor your ability to know, on your own, what works for you best of all.
I do not feel I deserve a vote, nor does any outsider.
Just my take,
Kare

What i am wondering , is, what is the price for an workable android tablet,
that i would actually be able to use?
Do they work out of the box?
If we are not allowed to talk about it here, let me know.
