RE: track pad

2017-09-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Jonathan,

Other than the turning the track pad commander on, do these interaction
gestures work on the newer magic 2 trackpads?

I’m having a shit of a job trying to get my new trackpad to work correctly with
sierra

I'm sorry but I can interpret this question in two ways.

1. How do I use the trackpad.
2. How do I interact with an item using the trackpad commander.

The first question gets a bit complex depending on what you are attempting to
do. The second one I will answer.

1. Turn on Trackpad commander by hitting the vo key(s) while doing a two finger
rotate clockwise on the trackpad.
2. use a two finger swipe right to interact with an item.

To stop interacting with an item do a two finger swipe left.

Re: voices high sierra

2017-09-26 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

You do this through Voiceover utility. Open Voiceover utility with vo+f8, then
down to the category "Speech" then right to "default voice" popup button where
you activate "customize" dialog and choose your voice to download.

a frozen phone.
Up until the iPhone 7 ($720.00 at Amazon Marketplace) and 7 Plus ($785.70 at
Amazon Marketplace), you could hold the wake/lock (or "side" button) and the
home button at the same time until the Apple logo appeared. That process
changed with the iPhone 7 lineup, when you had to hold the wake/lock and volume
down buttons to complete the process.

If you try the same thing on the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, however, you'll quickly
learn that's how the Emergency SOS feature is triggered. Depending on your
settings, your phone may end up playing a loud alarm and calling emergency
services when all you wanted to do was restart your device.
Apple has published the button sequence (not combination) that restarts the
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Here's what you need to do:
. Quickly press and release the volume up button.
. Quickly press and release the volume down button.
. Hold in the wake/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
The next time your phone is running a bit slow or is frozen, keep this in mind.
It took me a few tries to get it just right, but it indeed works.

Hi there,

I have a friend who uses the Ear pods with a wireless bluetooth device that
plugs in to the Windows box and also uses them on the Mac. His Windows box at
work uses a bluetooth transmitter and he says that this particular set up works
well. He says though it’s optimal to have two pairs but one pair would
probably work.

Correct. This is where the person is saying that it says Activities which is
valid. It’s probably either a change of wording or just a typing mistake.
Either or it will probably be fixed in a future release.

Contacts syncing

2017-09-26 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Listers,

I have a bit of a problem with the way my contacts sync. I have two accounts:
icloud and google. Both have cync enabled. I have just noticed that some
cards in my contacts on my mac say "all icloud" and others say" all google".
How can I make sure that individual contacts are present in both accounts. I
obviously misunderstand how contacts app works as far as syncing goes.

Many thanks

Comment: Why the iPhone X appears to be power-hungry despite more efficient OLED screen

2017-09-26 Thread Mary Otten

Comment: Why the iPhone X appears to be power-hungry despite more efficient
OLED screen
9to5Mac / Ben Lovejoy

We noted earlier a Chinese regulatory filing that appears to confirm an earlier
report that the iPhone X will come equipped with 3GB RAM. That same filing also
contains another interesting number: the apparent battery capacity.

Serial leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer tweeted the image showing a battery capacity
of 2716mAh – even higher than the 2691mAh battery found in the iPhone 8 Plus,
with its far less power-efficient LCD screen …

LCD screens use a backlight to light up the entire display area. Even an area
of the screen that is solid black gets the same amount of light, it is simply
blocked by the black LCD pixels. OLED, in contrast, lights individual pixels,
without any backlight required. A black area of the screen therefore uses no
power.

It’s difficult to find true like-for-like comparisons, as manufacturers
typically take advantage of the power efficiency of OLED by making their
displays brighter. But a little Googling suggests that an OLED screen ought to
use around two-thirds the power of an equivalent LCD one.

The iPhone X does, of course, have a somewhat larger display than the iPhone 8
Plus, at 5.8 inches rather than 5.5 inches, but 5% more display area is
relatively trivial compared to the power savings of OLED.

This suggests, then, that there’s other technology in the iPhone which requires
significantly more power than less advanced models.

One obvious candidate is the optical image stabilization system. While the
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have OIS on one camera, the iPhone X has it on both
cameras. OIS has motors that physically move the lens to counteract hand
movements, and this requires significant amounts of power.

A second likely suspect is the TrueDepth camera system. This is used not just
for face recognition for unlocking the phone and authorizing Apple Pay
transactions, but also for the new Animoji feature and the Portrait Mode when
used with the front-facing camera.

The TrueDepth camera requires an infrared ‘flood illuminator.’ Although it
doesn’t use visible light, this will use power levels not massively dissimilar
to a visible-light flash, but will be operating for much longer periods.

So even with a larger battery and much more power-efficient display, Apple
clearly finds that the extra features on the iPhone X eat significant amounts
of power. It cites 12 hours of Internet use and 13 hours of video playback
against an hour more of each for the iPhone 8 Plus.

When it comes to recharging your iPhone X or iPhone 8 battery, you’ll have the
choice of fast-charging via wire or wireless charging with a pad, wireless
charging without a pad or using furniture. Manufacturers of Qi chargers have
wasted in no time in adding iPhone compatibility to their product descriptions.

2017-09-26 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello, sorry for the rant. It is unbelievable the original poster touts this as
a "major bug", when it's possibly a typo and would be clased as a "minor bug".
In my limited testing of the beta, I discovered this, but would never class
this as anything major. The feature is still fully functional, like before. The
wording has just changed, that is all. Whether this will be fixed is likely but
remains to be seen.

2017-09-26 Thread Alex Hall
If anyone can respond to this with information, I'd ask them to keep it on the
list and not respond privately. I'd love more details about this device,
Apple-specific or not, and I imagine I'm not alone. Here's hoping someone on
this list managed to capture an allusive Orbit and can give us all some
details.

Re: Cross Posted: Orbit Reader 20 and Apple Devices?

2017-09-26 Thread Christine Grassman
The only updated information I have received since my inquiry is that the Orbit
REader was supposed to have been released in Australia, but was pulled for some
unknown reason. This elevates my concern: the device may be just what some of
us need, in a much more reasonable price range, but if support for it is
nonexistent, and if there is an unwillingness to be transparent or respond to
inquiries so ostensibly close to a product release, one has to wonder . . .

Re: 1Password Subscription

2017-09-26 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello E.T.,

I did try a 1Password account on a one-month trial basis, and it worked well.
There were no issues with syncing or offline access.

However, after the trial ended I decided to go back to Dropbox for 1Password
syncing as I didn’t think the subscription offered any benefits to me. One
advantage is that you can use the Pro versions of 1Password on all platforms
during your subscription, but since I already purchased 1Password for Windows
and Mac, that wasn’t necessary.

Thanks,

Grant

Re: 1Password Subscription

Grant,
Thanks for this feedback. The reason for my query is that there may
be times (natural disasters, extended power outages, etc.) where I may
need to access data I have stored in 1Password. I should probably test
this with the current setup with my wifi disconnected.

My thinking is that I will contact interviewees either by phone, FaceTime,

I am looking for an accessible app that would let me redord the interviews and

Your recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Problems with messages app in iOS 11

2017-09-26 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I am encountering some difficulties after upgrading to iOS 11 on the iPhone SE.
I can't seem to see all the messages in the message lists. The app reports
that there's a new message which is unread but I can't seem to find it. It
appears on my mac in the messaging app but I can't locate it on my phone.

Secondly, I don't seem to be able to delete messages in the app by the action
menu item, which was so easy to do in the previous versions. is this a bug?

ntfs drives in high sierra

2017-09-26 Thread jeff `greene
Hi Listers, I thought I remembered hearing somewhere that High Sierra would
automatically read and write NTFS drives. Meanwhile after upgrading my mac
Paragon NTFS is bugging me to upgrade. It keeps saying free upgrade but when I
click the button they want $19.95. I’m getting pretty sick of Paragon’s
software, wanting more money for every other upgrade. So, does High Sierra read
and write to NTFS drives?
thanks Jeff

Re: ntfs drives in high sierra

2017-09-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

According to my research, sorry, but the answer is still no other than a third
party driver like you have. There's supposed to be some Terminal method, but
I'm not sure of it's reliability. If someone has first hand experience with
this and wishes to correct me, go for it.

RE: Uber App and a Guide Dog

2017-09-26 Thread David & his pack of dogs
Before using Uber, remember they have come under a lot of critisusm for their
treatment of blind people and their guide dogs. Just something to keep in mind.
Apparently they have refused to pick up blind people with their guides. My
information might be outdated. But, I just wanted you to be prepared for the
archaic attitude some of them have. They feel the law does not apply to them.

Hi guide dog users,

I am considering using Uber for the first time and am wondering if there is a
procedure for notifying them that I have a guide dog so the driver would be
aware of this before coming to pick me.

Please let me know.

Thx,
Jeff

2017-09-26 Thread Nancy Badger
There will be an option on the app to call the driver. I called the driver and
let him know that I was blind and I had a white cane. He was able to recognize
me immediately and it kept me from missing my ride. I would recommend that you
call and let him know your circumstances. Just my opinion.

Just updated my Macbook to High Sierra and noticed I cannot adjust volume,

vo+command+arrow keys. Is it completeley gone or is there some other shortcut?
I cannot understand why Apple would change this.

Re: Uber App and a Guide Dog

2017-09-26 Thread David Chittenden
After Uber was sued and lost, they adopted a zero-tollerance policy around
discrimination of guide dogs. In other words, if the driver abandons someone
because of a guide dog, place a complaint through the app and Uber will dismiss
the driver. When it happened to me, Uber gave me a $10 credit.

When I had a guide dog in the US, I experienced significantly more
discrimination from taxi drivers, and the taxi companies never provided me the
identifying information so I could progress complaints (talk about behaving
above the law). Personally, I prefer Uber's response as they changed their
policies and practices after they lost the lawsuit.

Note: In Australia and New Zealand, the taxi companies have zero-tollerance
policies regarding guide dogs, so I have not had any difficulties in either
country regarding my guide dog and taxis.

Kind regards,

David Chittenden, MSc, MRCAA

RE: How to force restart the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus - CNET

2017-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon,

This is an 8/8+ hardware key sequence.

It could never be an iOS sequence for it is meant to force restart the device
should the OS freeze.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for this,

Is this only the 8 and 8+ or is it an IOS11 feature

Just wondering as it's another one we have to remember.

Can see this causing issues with SOS if people get it wrong.

a frozen phone.
Up until the iPhone 7 ($720.00 at Amazon Marketplace) and 7 Plus ($785.70 at
Amazon Marketplace), you could hold the wake/lock (or "side" button) and the
home button at the same time until the Apple logo appeared. That process

settings, your phone may end up playing a loud alarm and calling emergency
services when all you wanted to do was restart your device.

Your $800 iPhone 8 Plus has $290 worth of components in it - CNET

 IHS Markit
The analytics company IHS Markit on Tuesday issued its annual teardown of
iPhone production costs, and if the estimate is correct what impresses me
most is that the iPhone 8 Plus -- with 32GB more memory, a more powerful
processor, wireless charging and a slightly improved camera -- only costs
about $17.80 more to make.

IHS Markit's iPhone 8 Plus cost breakdown. (Click to see at full size.)
IHS Markit
While you might see (or emit) gasps of outrage at the thought that over half
the price of the phone isn't... stuff... it actually makes sense given what
I suspect is Apple's huge cost overhead of intangibles. (A fancy new HQ, for
a start.)
Plus, as long as the iPhone retains its tech je ne sais quois, you'll be
paying a zeitgeist premium for it.
Another interesting note from the company's report is that it estimates the
cost of manufacturing has increased by about $0.60; given the addition of
the back glass, wireless charging circuitry and so on, that's unsurprising.

watchOS 4: How to customize and use the new Siri face on Apple Watch

2017-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
9to5Mac - Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 8:51 AM
watchOS 4: How to customize and use the new Siri face on Apple Watch

watchOS 4 introduces a new Siri watch face on Apple Watch that intelligently
updates to show you relevant content throughout the day. The Siri watch face
pulls data from 14 different sources by default, but customizing these
sources can help remove information from the timeline that you don't need
and make the watch face more useful.

The Siri watch face includes a digital clock with a flashing second
indicator (but no option for seconds), two customizable complications
including a new Siri complication, and two dynamic tiles of information.
These tiles will update depending on time of day, date, current events,
activity progress, and more.
Like other watch faces, swiping down from the top reveals Notification
Center and swiping up from the bottom opens Control Center. Spin the Digital
Crown on Siri face, however, and the timeline becomes a vertical carousel of
information.
Rotating the Digital Crown downward shows Recent and All-Day tiles like
temperature highs and lows and Now Playing cards. The tap minimizes to the
top right corner with a light background indicating that it's a button you
can tap to return to the main view. You can also click the Digital Crown to
leave the timeline and go back to the starting point.
Rotating the Digital Crown upward shows you tiles for Up Next and Tomorrow.
Siri face previews the first Up Next tiles by default, and scrolling here
reveals more. Rolling the Digital Crown lets you move around the timeline
too.

While these tiles change dynamically, Siri face features two complications
that you set. My default, the new Siri complication is located in the top
left (this is the only face with this complication) and the date is located
above the digital clock.
Tapping the Siri complication invokes the voice assistant just like holding
the Digital Crown or saying 'Hey Siri' when the display is on. It's a
visually satisfying complication, but you may get more use out of Siri face
if you put something else here since you can invoke Siri with voice or a
click.

Press the Siri face firmly, then select Customize to choose between
Activity, Alarm, Battery, Breathe, Calendar, Date, Find My Friends, Heart
Rate, Home, Mail, Maps, Messages, Moon Phase, Music, News, Phone, Reminders,
Remote, Siri, Stocks, Stopwatch, Sunrise/Sunset, Timer, Weather, Weather
Conditions, Workout, World Clock, and third-party complications.
The top right complication is a bit smaller and can be set to Alarm,
Battery, Calendar, Date, Heart Rate, News, Stocks, Stopwatch,
Sunrise/Sunset, Timer, Weather, World Clock, and third-party complications.

After you personalize the two complications, consider customizing which data
sources Siri face uses. You can't do this from the Apple Watch, however, so
you'll need your iPhone. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, look for the
Siri face in the My Faces section (or add it from the Face Gallery tab at
the bottom), then tap the Siri face to reveal customization options.
>From here you can set both complications just like on the Apple Watch, and a
Data Sources list lets you toggle apps that appear on Siri face on and off.
watchOS 4.0 includes 14 data sources: Alarms, Breathe, Calendar, Home, News,
Now Playing, Photos, Reminders, Stocks, Stopwatch, Timer, Wallet, Weather,
and Workout.
You can't use third-party apps as data sources (yet), but you can disable
data sources that aren't useful for you and declutter the Siri face
timeline. For example, I toggle off Photos, News, and Stocks to avoid seeing
poorly chosen snapshots, the latest Trump headline, and stock market changes
on my Siri face.
This cleans up the experience for me and only surfaces useful tiles like
HomeKit scene triggers, exercise recommendations, and upcoming Wallet
passes.
My 'Good morning' scene is displayed when I wake up, and the 'Good night'
scene is shown in the evening. Tapping these launches the Home app and shows
the specific scene in the list, then tapping the scene activates it (which
turns my lights off, locks the front door, etc.).

Siri face is a great exercise coach, too, as it will recommend the exact
amount of walking you should do to complete your Move goal at the end of the
day. Siri face also shows the Now Playing card for music and podcasts played
on the iPhone (or music on the watch), upcoming alarms and reminders appear
in the timeline as well as calendar events, and Wallet passes are surfaced
to the top when needed just like the lock screen on the iPhone.
You'll also see currently active Timers appear dynamically, sunrise and
sunset times, and Breathe app reminders.
I wish there was a version with analog watch hands (and second hands on the
digital clock) and third-party apps as data sources would be appreciated. It
also feels unnecessary to open Notification Center to view a missed alert
when the Siri face timeline could optionally display alerts as well, but

Major macOS (incl. High Sierra) Keychain password extraction vulnerability to be addressed by Apple in update [Video]

2017-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
9to5Mac - Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 5:07 AM
Major macOS (incl. High Sierra) Keychain password extraction vulnerability
to be addressed by Apple in update [Video]

A macOS vulnerability discovered by security researcher Patrick Wardle
allows any app - signed or unsigned - to extract plain text passwords from
Keychain. Wardle demonstrated the exploit with a proof of concept app, seen
in the video below.
The vulnerability is a huge one, because Keychain data is secured by 256-bit
AES encryption, which should make it virtually uncrackable - and because the
bug affects all versions of macOS, including High Sierra .

What is supposed to happen is that only the app authorized to access a
particular password can decrypt it. But Wardle demonstrated his app was able
to extract and decrypt passwords for Twitter, Facebook, and Bank of America.
The app is able to do this without any user intervention.
The demonstration video shows it running in an unsigned app, which are
blocked by default in macOS, but Wardle says this was only to demonstrate
how low the security bar is set. It works equally well in signed apps.
As a responsible researcher, Wardle reported the vulnerability to Apple on
September 7 and will not disclose the method used until Apple has patched
it. He told Gizmodo that the company is likely to do so soon.
He also says that this is not a reason to hold off on upgrading to High
Sierra: it's not a newly-introduced bug.
I think everyone should update. There's a lot of good built-in security
features. This attack works on older versions of macOS as well. There's no
reason for people not to upgrade.
Check out the video demo below.
Patrick Wardle is a former NSA staffer who last year demonstrated Mac
malware that could tap into live webcam and microphone feeds. He also
discovered Mac malware in the wild that allowed access to webcam photos,
screenshots and key-logging, and a separate exploit that would let someone
with local access to a Mac escalate their privileges to root.

The best (and worst) new iPhone 8/Plus features

2017-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
9to5Mac - Monday, September 25, 2017 at 1:37 PM
The best (and worst) new iPhone 8/Plus features [Video]

The iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus are officially on sale, and we were able to
score both new smartphones early last Friday morning (read Jordan's full
review).
This launch felt a little different from past iPhone launches, simply
because the highly-anticipated iPhone X looms large on the horizon. I've
asked lots of people, and many of them have stated that they are waiting for
Apple's OLED-enabled, diminished-bezel flagship model.
But just because the iPhone X is coming later this year doesn't
automatically mean that you should ignore the iPhone 8. Apple's brand new
flagship smartphone shares a lot of the same design characteristics as the
iPhone 6, 6s, and 7, but it also shares some of the same technical power
that's found inside the iPhone X. In this hands-on video unboxing and
walkthrough, we consider some of the iPhone 8's best new features.

Top iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus features
Glass back
In my opinion the iPhone 4 was the best looking iPhone of all time. Much of
that had to do with the symmetry of the device, along with its shatter-prone
glass back. After the iPhone 4s, Apple abandoned the rear glass design.
Seven years after the iPhone 4 debuted, the glass back makes its
long-awaited return. Since the iPhone 8 sports the familiar curved-edge
design of the iPhone 6-era, the glass is more subtle this time around.
Durability
One of the reasons that Apple ditched the glass back starting with the
iPhone 5 was because it was shatter-prone. This time around, Apple worked
directly with glass-supplier Corning to come up with a solution that can
stand up to abuse. The glass in the iPhone 8 is reportedly more durable than
Corning's own flagship Gorilla Glass 5 product used in many of today's top
smartphones.
Video walkthrough

Classy new gold color
If you weren't a fan of the gold and rose gold colors on older iPhone
hardware, then there's a good chance you'll like the iPhone 8's new gold
color. The iPhone 8's gold is less pink than rose gold, and less gaudy than
the regular gold on older devices. It's more of a refined, classy caramel
look, that slightly changes color based on ambient lighting.

A11 Bionic Processor
By now we've all read the reports about how fast the iPhone 8 is. Thanks to
its six-core A11 Bionic processor, the iPhone 8 runs circles around most
Android phones, and is seen competing with some of Intel's mid-range
consumer Core-series processors. Featuring a second-generation performance
controller that's capable of using all six-cores simultaneously, it delivers
significantly higher performance than last year's A10 Fusion.

Apple-designed GPU
After controversially ditching London-based GPU-supplier Imagination, Apple,
for the first time, is using its own custom-designed silicon to power the
iPhone 8's graphics. The result is an up to 30% boost in performance.

Coupled with the new Metal 2 API found in iOS 11, which lends near direct
access to the GPU, it's exciting to think about the type of games, machine
learning, and AR applications that may be possible on the iPhone 8 and
future iPhone models.
Louder speakers
Apple says that the stereo speakers in the iPhone 8 are up to 25% louder and
deliver deeper bass. After doing a side-by-side comparison, I agree with its
claims. Sound quality remains nothing to write home about, but you will
notice overall louder volume, and subtle, yet noticeable gains on the
low-end.

True Tone Display
The iPad Pro's True Tone display is a great feature, because it
automatically adjusts the color temperature of the screen to compliment the
ambient lighting of your environment. With a device featuring a screen as
large as the iPad Pro, the True Tone effect is much more pronounced on
Apple's flagship tablet. It's still a great feature to have on the iPhone 8,
I just find that it's not as important as it is on the iPad Pro.

Reduced shutter lag + haptic feedback
The A11 Bionic's new image signal processor, or ISP, improves the
performance of the cameras in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. One of the things you
may notice is the reduced shutter lag when taking photos. A snappier shutter
increases the likelihood that you'll be able to snag an in-the-moment photo
before it's too late.

There's also the subtle presence of haptic feedback when pressing the
shutter button. This lends users with a sensory confirmation that the
shutter was pressed successfully, resulting in a more complete-feeling
photo-taking experience.
Quad LED True Tone Flash with Slow Sync
The Quad-LED flash now comes equipped with Slow Sync, a technology that
combines a slow shutter speed with a short strobe pulse. When using the
flash, Slow Sync affords a brighter foreground while providing a properly
exposed background. It means that your photos will appear more even and
natural, even when shot in less-than-ideal lighting

Hi. It's not strange at all if it says your disk is full. It may very well be
full. When you go to your Mackintosh HD in finder, how much space does it say
is available/free? You may have to either delete or copy files on to somewhere
else to make space.

RE: Your $800 iPhone 8 Plus has $290 worth of components in it - CNET

2017-09-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
What!?

Really, that's down right rude,
Still can't csee why they are asking for 2100 NZ dollars for the iPHone x
256GB.

Crazy.

Subject: Your $800 iPhone 8 Plus has $290 worth of components in it - CNET

CNET News - Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 9:59 AM Your $800 iPhone 8 Plus has
$290 worth of components in it - CNET IHS Markit The analytics company IHS
Markit on Tuesday issued its annual teardown of iPhone production costs, and if
the estimate is correct what impresses me most is that the iPhone 8 Plus --
with 32GB more memory, a more powerful processor, wireless charging and a
slightly improved camera -- only costs about $17.80 more to make.

IHS Markit's iPhone 8 Plus cost breakdown. (Click to see at full size.) IHS
Markit While you might see (or emit) gasps of outrage at the thought that over
half the price of the phone isn't... stuff... it actually makes sense given
what I suspect is Apple's huge cost overhead of intangibles. (A fancy new HQ,
for a start.) Plus, as long as the iPhone retains its tech je ne sais quois,
you'll be paying a zeitgeist premium for it.
Another interesting note from the company's report is that it estimates the
cost of manufacturing has increased by about $0.60; given the addition of the
back glass, wireless charging circuitry and so on, that's unsurprising.

In iOS 11, The iBook VoiceOver Continuous Reading Bug has Been Resolved

2017-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

With the release of iOS 11, I received a message from Apple indicating that
they had resolved the iOS iBook VoiceOver continuous reading bug, described
in my original bug report, and that they wanted me to confirm this.

I am delighted to report that the bug, as I originally described in iOS 10,
has been successfully resolved with the release of iOS 11.

I have already sent my congratulations and appreciation to Apple and wanted
to update you on this issue.

I will paste in my previous post on this in order to refresh your memory on
this matter.

Here's one for the team, eh?

Mark

Subject: Even in iOS 10.1 the iBook VoiceOver Continuous Reading Bug
Continues

Hello Everyone,

A while ago I posted to the groups describing what I consider to be an iBook
VoiceOver continuous reading bug given that the behavior did not occur in
previous versions of iOS.

After posting, a couple of iOS beta testers reported that this issue had
been resolved in iOS 10.1.

Well, as you can guess, I updated to iOS 10.1 and the bug, in my opinion,
persists.

I am going to paste in a modified copy of my previous post on this and see
if any of you can reproduce it in iOS 10.1.

[ORIGINAL TEXT]
My preferred method for reading iOS iBook titles is to use the two-finger,
swipe-down VoiceOver gesture, in order to initiate continuous reading of the
text. Please note that I am not referring to the Speak Screen accessibility
feature.

In short, my display is set to automatically lock after 30 seconds. In the
previous versions of IOS, performing a 2-finger swipe down, in an iBook
title, would suspend the auto-lock and allow for continuous reading of the
text. This does not appear to be the case, any longer.

This is to say, in certain titles, such as those containing imbedded
hyperlinks, the auto-lock engages, cancelling the continuous reading mode.

I first discovered this, last night, while reading the Apple TV User Guide.
The same phenomenon occurred when I tested my hypothesis with the iPhone
User Guide for iOS 10 and iPhone User Guide for iOS 9.3.

At first, I thought it was some kind of issue with titles produced by Apple
but I tested a recently published (non Apple) title, that has a web link
imbedded in the text, and, just as with the Apple manuals, after less than 1
minute, the screen locked and reading ceased.

It should be noted, that the hyperlinks that exist in the Table of Contents,
used to jump to a specific area, does not cause interruption to the
continuous reading feature. I say this because titles in my Library,
containing only such links, read as expected.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.
>From Settings/General/Display and Brightness, set Auto Lock to 30 seconds.

2.
In iBook, open the Apple TV User Guide and, from the table of contents,
select Home Sharing; or, open the iPhone User Guide for iOS 10 and, from the
table of contents, select Basics.

3.
Once the desired page is displayed, perform the two-finger swipe-down
VoiceOver gesture to initiate continuous reading.

As I said, in my testing, each time either an imbedded hyperlink or heading
is encountered, a short time later, the screen will lock and reading will
stop.

Please confirm if this occurs during your testing.

I would like to note that, this problem does not occur when using the Speak
Screen accessibility feature. While certainly useful in some instances, the
Speak Screen feature is not my preferred method for reading iBook titles.

Mark
