OK, maybe this is a dumb question, but what is a sound bar? I have a Sonos
system, but have never heard it referred to as a sound bar.

And BTW, like others, have been very happy with the sound of the Sonos, and the
accessibility of the IOS app.

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Donna, a sound bar is a general term for a long sometimes tube shaped or
square thin box with stereo speakers mounted. Instead of having traditional
speakers that sit in the corners and fire in to the center of the room these
have the speakers fire out from a. Single box you sit under your TV for example
in to the room sort of inversing the sound distribution process. It’s great
for smaller rooms and apartments or conditions where you don’t want to run
wires.

Braille screen input

2016-11-25 Thread Sandra E. Finley
Good morning. Is anyone else having difficulty with braille screen input? The
dots are not in the appropriate places, even when I calibrate the screen with
my right hand, followed by my left hand. I get dots 1 2 3 4 and 5 but not 6,
or 1 2 4 5 6 andd no 4. The mysterious thing is, it has not always been like
this. I don't understand why there has been a change or how to fix it. This
happens whether I am in tabletop or away mode. Thank you.

That’s interesting. I’ve not been experiencing that problem. Perhaps try
locking your orientation in one mode or the other? I’m just grasping at straws

Re: Braille screen input

2016-11-25 Thread Robert Hill
Are you trying to enter a full braille cell?
If so, you can only enter 5 dots at a time.
So what I do is press down 5 fingers, then lift up one, and complete the full
cell, then lift up all fingers.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

They have that’s true and Comcast does have the talking menus but on the down
side, you’re on the Comcast network. The HD performance is shameful and over
compressed, the DVR is not nearly as feature packed and you do not have
equivalent upload and download speeds. You’re also on some shared facilities

True, with regard to Comcast and the talking menus. However, the prices are out
rages, unacceptably so. They take advantage of their monopoly position in
markets where they have that. Notice the difference between Comcast pricing
where there is competition and where there isn't. I live in an area where there
isn't, and as of the middle of next month, Comcast TV will not be in our house

Re: How is everyone finding sierra?

2016-11-25 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,
the most annoying in my opinion is the sluggishnes of VO. For example: If I
press CMD + w to close a document in Textedit without saving it I always press
VO + FN + right arrow to jump quickly to end and then twice VO + left arrow to
find „don’t save“. I press these key combinations quickly but VO reads all
buttons it passed one after the other and reads them out loud before it
actually reads the button I’m sitting on for ages.
Another annoying thing is VO doesn’t always give voice feedback if I navigate
through files and folders in Finder, if column view is set and I just use arrow
key up or down to move around. I’m forced to use VO + arrow keys to move around
if I want to hear all the folder and file names VO passes. Not a real big thing
but like that it’s not really nice to use first letter navigation.
I like Sierra but from OS to OS VO seems to me to become less responsive and
more sluggish in reading content. Hopefully Apple is going to recognize this
and then fix it.
All the best
Jürgen

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Mary Otten
OK, further to my sound bar issue. I did not correctly describe how the sound
bar was connected to the TV. It is in fact connected via an optical digital
link between the television and the sound bar. I recall now that but this was
the case with my former audio video receiver and the second generation Apple
TV. And it had the problem I have described. With the fourth generation Apple
TV and the sound bar, when we had the problem, we went and purchased a new and
better optical cable, thinking that this could be the problem. We tried it on
two TVs, both of them Samsung flatscreen models. So you have the Apple TV
connected through HDMI to the TV, and then the optical out to the sound bar. In
both cases, I have the choppy audio problem missing words or beginning's of
words. And now with Roku the same applies to their excess ability solution. I
do remember seeing stuff in the past that talked about being able to use HDMI
out to a sound bar if you had an HDMI connector on your sound bar, which I
don't. And then you have to have something called arc, ARC to have that work
right. It's called audio return channel. So at this point, I'm not sure what to
look for. Since I seem to have a wiring set up that you, Scott, talked about,
albeit with a different sound bar. Having had this problem with two different
Samsung TVs using optical cable to the sound bar, it's either something with
the TVs, something with the sound bar, or I just don't know. It's very
frustrating, that much I do know.

Re: Trying to install an app from Safari and can't figure out where I go in system preferences to enable the functionality.

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
Go to security under general and almost all the way to the right there’s an
area where you can set from App Store only. If you’re trying to install as
well you’ll see in many cases a one off entry where you can approve the
specific application. The key is to be under general under security.

Hope that helps.

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
To add even more confusion to this, I’m using Samsung flat screens as well, so
we have the same brand television. Do you get a loss of audio from the flat
screens internal speakers or just to the sound bar itself? You might have some
sort of sleep setting where the sound bar goes in to a powered down state and
wakes up only when it receives signal, that might need to be disabled in the
sound bars internal menu.

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Mary Otten
There is no chopping problem with the TV internal speakers on either TV. Of
course it sounds god awful, but the voiceover or Roku audio does not chop. I'm
not sure about any sort of sleep setting regarding the sound bar internal menu.
I don't even know if it has an internal menu, since if it does, it's not
accessible. I will get my husband to look into that. Interesting however, that
the problem existed on an older Apple TV with an N a D receiver as well. I
wonder if this sleep setting is common. We don't have that receiver anymore so
we can't check.

Hi Scott, does that Sony sound bar you have have the sleep setting you referred
to? And did you happen to find it's model number? It looks like Best Buy
currently has four sound bars from Sony.

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
So when I do this under Sierra and go to general and there’s an app to be
installed I’ll see the app name and then an allow or deny option, if I click
allow all continues well. You might also try your window chooser in the event
there’s a popup that needs addressing.

Just kicking around some ideas here this is what I’ve done in my case, your
milage may vary.

Here’s another guess to try. Uncheck the box and install again, when it
complains about needing permission go check the area and see if there’s a one
off mention of the exception and the ability to allow it.

2016-11-25 Thread Joseph Hudson
Hi Scott, I'm not seeing any of that. The only things unseen, or a login
password has been set for this user, I have a change password button. And then
I have a require password after system his went to sleep. Check box. Dan
there's a pop-up menu did it dressed the same thing. Then there's a set lot
message check by six, notification and the list just goes on and on what can be
in that area. But there's nothing about Apps that need permission. To be
accessed.

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Scott,
There is no menu, and apparently no way of adjusting any sort of sleep mode, if
it exists. There is an anything except volume and some 3-D thing and a
Bluetooth pairing button, and the on off button. No way to get a menu.

The SOnos Play bar would be very configurable but you would need to have a
tv or device that you can connect it to as I don't think it has HDMI for
plugging in the Apple tv, but the bar does have Optical which most tv's
 have

Might be worth while having a look into,

I have my aTV connected to the tv I have and then that is connected to my
speakers via optical and works great, I've been thinking about the sonos
play bar to allow my sonos play 1's to be able to output the audio from
 the aTV.
Might have to have a look at it again tomorrow.

Subject: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

I know I have brought this topic up before. Another year has gone by, and
there are many sound bars on sale right now with substantial discount. But
if I don't work any better than what we have now, I don't want to spend
another few hundred bucks and be disappointed. The problem I have, and I
know others have had it as well, is that when you have voiceover on your
Apple TV and that is connected to a sound bar, you miss words from
voiceover. When sound is playing, as when you have music or TV program
active, there are no VoiceOver missing words. This has something to do
with the HDMI, and I don't remember exactly what. But I know that when I
look at the sound bars online, it doesn't really give any indication of
any of the specs that I might need to know up to see if voiceover is going
to work right. We just got a Roku streaming stick with accessibility. It's
suffers from the same problem as voiceover. You miss lots of words. So, I
would really like to get a nice quality sound bar that actually lets me
use these devices. I can sort of get around it with the Apple TV by using
a Bluetooth speaker. But then of course, the sound bar isn't in use.
Anyway, I would really like a top quality sound bar that is going to do
what I need it to do for any of these connected devices that have voice
accessibility. Does anybody have any advice?

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
Ok, mine is much more complicated, it has 6 different surround modes, an input
selector, arrow keys, volume and some other keys to assign. There’s also a
screen on the front, I need to get you that part number I’ll do that.

I’m not sure I had to set anything specifically in my setup, I just wired the
optical out to the sound bar optical in and used the remote to adjust the base
level.

Mine also has an HDMI pass through where you can deliver sound via the HDMI
rather than optical but as mentioned I had issues with that consistently
working. I’m sure it is the sound bar though since your TV audio works just
fine as does mine. We also have the same brand of TV so I would assume the
optics and electronics are very similar. I think you’re heading in the right
direction. Interesting about the receiver. I’venever had this issue so not
sure, my receiver worked just fine as well but again my receiver I used at the
time was a very very high end Denon.

Okay Scott, I'm still getting the same message. And there's only two checkboxes
on identified developers. The team talk client requires you to check a box that
allows unidentified developers access. But I currently don't see this checkbox.
Can you FaceTime me and maybe assisting me? Meaning face time audio or if you
are in America, can you give me a call?

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
I have the same issue with my AV receiver. In my case, I know it’s because of
the sound “sleeping” when there’s no input. Voiceover doesn’t generate enough
sound to keep it alive. If there’s a setting to change this behavior there’s
nothing in the manual to indicate it. I doubt there’s enough interest to get
anyone to do this, but I wonder if an app could be developed that would just
produce a sustained carrier that would keep units like this from cutting out,
or maybe a better approach would be to see if Apple might consider building
something like this into Voiceover directly. It seems enough people are
experiencing it to make it worth pursuing. In the meantime, the only solution
I have found besides just doing a lot of flicking until I generate enough
chatter to get the thing to come back, is to hook up a bluetooth speaker or
headset and then turn it off once you have what you want going. Another trick
is to start music playing. Far from optimal but it does keep VO from cutting
out.

Using the optical transport has totally eliminated all sound loss issues
and provides a fantastic sound quality. This sound bar also has a very
nice sub which is wireless and can be placed anywhere in the room.
There’s even a mode for apartment use so it tries to isolate the sound
more in your space and let less leak in to the adjoining units. Can’t say
 enough good things about it.

 Hope that helps.

Re: Good sound bar that will work well with an Apple TV and voiceover

2016-11-25 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Larry,
Yes, that does work for voiceover, your workaround solution that is. But for
other things, like the fire TV, which I don't have or the Roku stick, which I
do have, that is not going to work, since those things don't offer Bluetooth or
headphones output oor connection. This still makes me wonder why some of the
optical out from television to sound bar work. People with Sonos and Scott with
his particular sunny don't have a problem. I just don't get it. There are some
really nice sound bars out there, but the ones that look like they would be the
best and are in my price range don't have HDMI. It seems like the full proof
method might be HDMI ARC. But thus far, I haven't found one with HDMI it sounds
like something I would actually want to listen to.

Re: RIP AirPort? Apple may abandon wireless routers and Time Capsule

2016-11-25 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Scott:

Two answers to your question about throughput on Linksys.

First, my personal experience is with the WRT1900AC, first rev. It was
easily the fastest I'd ever worked with. I say this in the past tense,
because I blew it up and it no longer boots. I'm just not good with
tasks like cracking the case open and attaching leads to particular
posts inside in order to get a serial console over USB--even though I
have the parts in house. So, I've been running on an old Archer C7, and
I miss my old Linksys. This has put me back in the market, even though
money is tight for me right now.

Second, I've found the following Cnet article quite helpful, and it
addresses this issue:
https://www.cnet.com/products/linksys-wrt3200acm-mu-mimo-gigabit-wi-fi-router/preview/

So, I'm currently considering a Black Friday deal at Amazon on the
WRT1900ACS--the penultimate model from Linksys which seems to have a
reasonably good price at Amazon just now. However, I'm personally
inclined to wait until just after Christmas as I expect the deals might
be even better in a month. As I said, my money is tight right now.

The above regards throughput. I would add that I've been a stalwart
OpenWRT fan for a decade. I love the control I get with OpenWRT. And,
accessibiliy can't be beat when it's a matter of editing ASCII text
files over ssh, though I tend to download them and edit on my Linux
desktop machine because my Arch build of vim is more featureful than
that provided by OpenWRT. Once edited, I simply rsync the result back
up.

Re: RIP AirPort? Apple may abandon wireless routers and Time Capsule

2016-11-25 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Mary:

I used to drool over FiOS, then I got it and I was sort of happy.
However,s hortly thereafter I was forced to move, and I ended up moving
where FiO was unavailable. So, I settled for Comcast, i.e. Xfinity.

Now, I'll not go back to FiOS even if I could for one simple reason.
Xfinity gives me native IPv6 and FiOS doesn't even have an IPv6 roll out
plan yet, last I looked.

My lan is now fully IPv6, including the telephone handsets on my desk. A
team of horses couldn't pull me back into IPv4 and it's obnoxious NAT.
When I had FiOS I had IPv6, but it was tunneled via Tunnel Broker.
Native is so so much more performant, and so so much easier to use. And,
to top it off, I see nothing in my logs by way of the breakin attacks
that I got over IPv4, and still get on the one machine that needs to
support IPv4 ports still--my Linode data center hosted server.

So, I no longer give a hoot for FiOS. I have an entirely different
viewpoint now.

Just my two cents (American).

Re: RIP AirPort? Apple may abandon wireless routers and Time Capsule

2016-11-25 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I should have read the rest of this thread before posting the below. Oh,
I still feel this way, but all ya'all are also talking about wired cable
telivision, and I didn't pay for that when I hadmy FiOS. I went straight
from my ONT to my in home Linux server over cat6 cabling.

Verizon tried to collect $99 fom me for a router--something I never got,
because there was no need for it. There record keeping assumed the extra
piece of hardware. It's a continuing unresolved issue rolling around in
my fico scoring, but they're not getting the moola. I can outwait them!

I have Xfinity cable, and I'm reasonably pleased with the talking
interface. Main complaint is that it's laggy, and has a tendency to
crash. But, I'm just not much of a TV person. If my Xfinity weren't
automatically included in my condo fee, I wouldn't be having it at all.
But, that's just me. I can't get into a heads up comparison, though I'm
aware some of what Scott talks about is also supported by Comcast's dvr
product, I have no notion about hd picture quality, and not even the
sound quality available. It's just not something I pay attention to. I
think I had my TV on last Tuesday for awhile--but that's about par for
me.

As for symetric speeds, yes that's the way things should be. That did
bother me when I moved, but it just hasn't been an issue. I find my
uploads, sometimes pretty large files, go through reasonably well. In
fact, there's throughput elasticity built into the Comcast service I
have. Truly, it hasn't been an issue.

A Question About Spam Calendar Event Invitations

2016-11-25 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Just so you know, I am cross-posting this email.

Earlier today, I received a calendar sales event invitation from an unknown
sender. Upon opening the invitation from within my iOS Calendar app, it was
clear that this was a spammer as I could see the list of invitees all of
which were just variations on a theme, for example b...@icloud.com,
b...@icloud.com, etc.

The event invitation was promoting a weekend sale for sunglasses and the
like. As a result, the event appeared across three different days,
corresponding to the length of the event/sale; extremely annoying, to say
the least.

The only buttons I could find upon which to act was either Accept button,
the maybe button, and the decline button.

I did not want to activate any of these buttons as doing so would send a
response to the sender, confirming the existence of my account.

Try as I may, I could not discover anyway to simply delete the event
invitation, itself, or the corresponding events from my Calendar, in iOS.

Just so you know, When I activated the button that linked to the sender,
whose account/email address consisted of Chinese characters, all I could do
was to either add the sender to my Contacts List, share my location, etc.
There was no option to block the sender nor anyway to report the event
invitation as spam.

Believe it or not, the most annoying thing, however, was not that the event
was added to my Calendar, for the duration of the event, it was that it
showed as an event to which I needed to reply. This means that the number 1
was constantly displayed on the Calendar's badge-app, icon.

I called Apple Care but, after waiting on hold for what seemed like an
interminable length of time, I decided to go it alone.

At first, I thought about firing up my Mac and seeing if I could discover a
way to delete the event from there. However, to be honest, my luck with the
Mac OS Calendar application, has never been spectacular. Add to that, the
fact that I was extremely angry at Apple for not providing some way to
delete an event invitation without having to select an option that would
alert the sender that any action on my part, had taken place.

My solution?

I simply fired up a Windows 7 PC that has the iCloud Control Panel for
Windows installed, launched Microsoft Outlook 2007, located the offending
invitation, and hit the delete key on the keyboard. Not including booting
up the PC and launching Outlook, the deletion process took less than 10
seconds.

When next I looked at my iOS Calendar, the invitation, along with its
corresponding footprint, had been deleted, as expected.

Question: Have any of you encountered spam Calendar event invitations? If
so, how did you handle it? Were you able to delete the invitation without
activating the Accept, Maybe, or Decline buttons?

The only thing I wish I had attempted, before resorting to my beloved
Windows PC, was to have explored the iCloud.com website to see if, perhaps
there may have been a delete button somewhere that would have accomplished
my goal.

I look forward to your replies,

Mark

Recording phone calls on the Iphone.

2016-11-25 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Someone on another list told me that apple has made it impossible to record
phone calls on the iphone directly from an app.
Even though i see a lot of apps in the appstore that is for recording such
calls.
So what i am wondering is if its not possible to record phone calls from an app
on the iphone or if i have to use the headphone jack to do this?
I also want to be able to do facetime recording as well.
If not then i guess i have to do things on the mac.

Re: RIP AirPort? Apple may abandon wireless routers and Time Capsule

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
FYI FIOS is rolling out V6 now. It’s not in my area yet but it is under way.
There’s also talk of which routers you need to support it, luckily mine is one
of the models that does.

Like you I used a tunnel breaker before, in my case I worked with Hurricane
electric but there are many options. Hurricane electric was nice because they
had many pops to choose from so I could find the one closest to me to use.
You’re right though, nothing beats native V6. To me though, the Comcast
performance problems just weren’t worth V6 native access. But just to clarify
there is a roll out under way. Also, the VZW network should also be V6 ready,
we were using V6 back in 2013 so I assume it’s made it to the consumer by now.
T-Mobile doesn’t seem to have it in place yet but it seems in the cards looking
at the settings they have available in their hotspots.

is still the gold standard of price vs performance in Canada. If we were
in any way competative in this area, perhapse the difference would be more
measurable, but I doubt that it would come down to 1/3 of total capacity.

Re: RIP AirPort? Apple may abandon wireless routers and Time Capsule

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
You know what bugged me worse than the network performance, the lower quality
television and the instability in my area of Comcast was the customer service.
By far the absolute worst I have run in to. Made me wish for the days of AT&T,
that should tell you something. I have the reverse issue you did with FIOS. I
have something like a $700 credit with Comcast because they first charged me
$1500 for boxes I didn’t return and when I was able to demonstrate I had
returned the boxes I went to a crazy positive state. (Good luck getting that
out of them though). Each call to customer service took 45 minutes of hold time
only to get a different answer every time and never once did I get a rep who
cared. I realize though each person may have a different result in this area
but I have heard nothing good about the customer service. I suppose if you
live in an area where it just works, the head ends aren’t over sold and the
plant is newer you may have a wildly different experience.

entire life. They are known for not providing wire speed solutions. I
would be hesitant to try one on my 500 megabit service but even an airport
doesn’t quite saturate that link. I use the provided ActionTech router
that FIOS offers and then use the airports as access points only. I’ve
never gotten a Linksys though to even break the 20 megabit mark reliably

further. I’m hoping though this may have changed because in principle I
like their gear because you can flash different firmware on them. DDWRT
and Tomato are very feature packed.

2016-11-25 Thread Scott Granados
I haven’t gotten the voice over lag myself. I find it very interesting in this
thread how different all of our voice over experiences are. Some are much more
stable than others and it seems the experience is different from the same
machine classes. I do notice the clean installs do the best but as mentioned
some have tried this and still have issues. I wonder what the cause is of the
inconsistency?

It may be different apps that are causing different Voice Over difficulties.
