Re: Mac mini and SSD ideas/thoughts

2016-09-26 Thread Alex Hall
I hesitate because of the throughput to the system. The drive itself may run at
internal speeds, but how fast can it talk to the computer? The connection type
will dictate that, and unless you're using a very modern one, I doubt you'll
reach the speed of an internal connection. I could be wrong, though; I don't
know the numbers off the top of my head.

However, you said you're using a Mac Mini. I replaced my spinning drive with an
SSD in my Mini last year, and it's worked perfectly ever since. The Minis can
do this, unlike modern MacBooks, though I'd suggest a sighted person
comfortable with computers do the actual work.

Re: Whart will people use Siri for on the Mac?

2016-09-26 Thread Saqib Hussain
Hi. I use suggested words which appear above the keyboard on my phone. My
typing speed has increased some what. Dictation is rubbish and I don’t use it
because it always makes a hash of your dictation most often than not. I have
tried dictation on Android and it is so much better on that platform. I’m not
saying its perfect but it gets most things right. I haven’t updated my Mac OS
yet as I’m told that the mail client has issues and I only use e-mail on my
Mac.

Personally, i use Apples notes app for this. More and more applications are
useing cloud services for synchronization across systems. It certainly prevents
wasting time manually copying files. If you need security for this, then

The files won’t directly transfer into it unless you email them to yourself and
export then open them in Voice Dream Reader. You can also transfer them to your
iCloud drive in a special folder which is located inside the Reader folder that
Voice Dream sets up if you choose to use iCloud Drive. this folder is called
Loader and is where the files reside until transferred to your iPhone.

I believe you can do the same thing with voice Dream Writer as well. In fact,
that’s how I do things, with either app, depending on what I want to do with
the information. I’ve also used Google Docs but that’s cloud based. HTH

The google docs iOS app is great and you can set files for offline access. I
store in google drive and offline any documents I want access too any time.

Re: boot camp in sierra

2016-09-26 Thread ikrami
i upgraded, but since i was already having windows 10 installed, nothing
broke. bootcamp in siera supports only windows 10 and later, that's why
i am not sure about those who have older versions of windows.

Unless I really have to.

So I don’t wish to have to face issues with bootcamp as well as sierra.

Any info appreciated.

Re: boot camp in sierra

2016-09-26 Thread maurice.mines
Good morning, I am running a mid-2012 MacBook Pro and am having no problems
with my Boot Camp partition I also did beta testing this summer, and I had
absolutely no problems with boot camp. My only issue right now, is the fact
that I need to find updated drivers for my Windows 10 side of the computer. For
instance I have to reboot into Mac OS by hand when I’m in Windows. There
normally is a start up disk area if you will, that will allow the machine to be
booted into whichever operating system you wish to use. Any thoughts from
anyone on the list? Hope all is well, Maurice mines.

iPhone7 in hand, and great apple store experience!

2016-09-26 Thread Kliphton Miller
Let me start by saying, apple stores are being restocked sooner than the
carriers. The reason I know this, is all carrier stores said they will fill
back orders first, and they might get more in the stores by mid october. If
you check the apple store app, select your carrier, color, and size it will
tell you what the ship time is, or if you can pick up in store. For the last 3
days I have been selecting all colors and sizes, at first it was just rose
gold. But yesterday afternoon, all colors and sizes said pickup in store
tomorrow. So I checked all morning when I got up, and when I got to apple
store, just 45 minutes before it opened, I was the first one to check in. The
crowd got larger by the minute, and I was afraid my reservation would get lost.
But the apple store rep who made my reservation, saw the crowd growing, and at
5 minutes to 10, when they opened, he came got me and said. “Your first. and
put me in the front of the line. Now that is the VIP treatment. So I got my
phone, went to a early lunch, and my phone is restoring from a backup as we
speak. Don’t like none of the cases in the apple store, so I grabbed an otter
box from T-Mobile on my way home. Great job apple!

Subject: iPhone7 in hand, and great apple store experience!

Re: iPhone7 in hand, and great apple store experience!

2016-09-26 Thread John Panarese
I took a chance at using the Apple Store app and pre-ordering an iPhone 7
when I was on vacation. I was amazed that I was able to get one at the local
store in Honolulu and I walked passed the huge line and got my phone the
morning they were released. The Apple reprisentative I dealt with was quite
aware of VoiceOver and it was a pleasure dealing with that store. I walked out
with my new phone and it restored from my iCloud backup.

Application for making ringtones for iphone & android phones using El Capitan?

2016-09-26 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi List,
subject field says it all!
I need an Application for making ringtones for iphone & android phones using El
Capitan?
I have a new studio "ringtone" project that needs to be able to play on iphone
& android type phones?
I understand that for iphone you change the .m4a to "m4r, is that all you half
to do?

as for the android type phones I believe they use mp3 ring tones or .oog files.
I know the ringtones must be shorter than 40 seconds.
I'm using Avid's Pro tools 12.5 so editing is not the issue creating the proper
format for any phone is the goal! :)
not sure what to get?
any apps that work on el capitan out there?
Thanks
Chuck

Re: Installing a new SSD Drive. what should i do to transfer my system?

2016-09-26 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Ramy,

If it’s possible I would hold off handing the Mac over.

If your mini is an older model like my 2012 machine. As you suggest it is
running Mountain Lion, I’m guessing it is around that age. You can accommodate
both drives. But you’ll need to discuss it with the shop. You or they have to
buy some special parts. I purchased mine from I Fix It. These parts are a
mounting bracket and and rubber bumpers. See link below.

As for copying. It depends upon what you can do for yourself or what you pay a
reputable service centre. You can use free tools like dd etc, if you are
willing to read and experiment. Of course, an external disk and using time
machine is probably the easiest.

AccessNote

2016-09-26 Thread E.T.
I installed this to make it possible to create notes and access them
on the computer via Dropbox where I usually edit them. Today I realized
that those changes do not make it to AccessNote on the iPhone. I looked
at all the settings and do not see an option t change this. Is it even
doable?

Re: Word to pages batch converter?

2016-09-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Jonathan,

Using the below Apple Script compiled as an application:

on open filist
repeat with lvar in filist
tell application "Finder"
set thename to name of lvar
end tell
set x to the offset of "." in thename set nuname to
text 1 thru text item x of thename
set nuname to text 1 thru text item x of thename
tell application "Pages"
activate
set filname to (path to desktop folder as text) &
nuname & "pages"
open lvar
save document 1 in filname
close every window saving no
end tell
end repeat
end open

I'm having frustrations. How this normally should work, is that you would drag
and drop a Word file, or folder full of Word files on to my W2P app icon. The
app would then open the Word file, get rid of the .docx extension, change it to
a .pages extension then save the file on the Desktop. Doing this manually,
everything works as it should. Using the app, though, Pages spins its wheels
for a bit then returns an error. If I do the same action with a Pages document
instead, then it works properly. I have played with a number of variations of
this with no real good results as of yet.

You, or anyone else is welcome to mess with it an d see if you can determine
how to make it work properly.

Later...

I don't see a automator library for Pages, but certainly I would expect that
the standard save action in AppleScript should work. The question is how would
you want your batch processor to work probably the easiest would be to create a
folder and then create a folder action AppleScript for that folder.

A lot of us use the folder action script that announces when a new file is
placed in the downloads folder, so I could see modifying this.

How much interest is there in this?

Weird issue with Safari.

2016-09-26 Thread Stacey Robinson
Hi all,
I’m having difficulty with safari.
I press command l to open a new site and begin typing. I hear a sound like
menus are trying to open with each letter I type.
I get a message about this being a smart text field or something.
How can I make Safari go back to normal?

Peace,

sluggish voices

2016-09-26 Thread Jean
Hello All:

As I wrote previously, I have also noticed slugishness in the voices after
upgrading to Siera. I was able to fix this for the most part by making
adjustments in the customization section of vo utility. For some reason, the
default settings of the voices are not recognized.

One thing I am having difficulty with though is vo keeping focus in some
documents in Itext Express. All of the documents are not this way and I have
not been able to arrive at any conclusions that would identify a pattern.

Re: Application for making ringtones for iphone & android phones using El Capitan?

2016-09-26 Thread Bill Gallik
I use an iOS app named ring maker Pro from the Apple App Store. You execute
this app on the iPhone or iPad and then send it to your Mac as an email or text
message attachment. You then open it on the Mac (or PC) and iTunes will load it
into your iTunes folders where it will then be available to download when you
do a sink from your Mac (or PC). When you get this app, it will be named rmaker
pro rather than ringmaker pro.

Re: Application for making ringtones for iphone & android phones using El Capitan?

2016-09-26 Thread Bill Gallik
I believe Ringtone Maker Pro is something like $1.99. You do have to somehow
get the resulting ringtone into your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, but this
part is quite straight forward; after saving the newly created ringtone you
have an option to send an e-mail with the ringtone attached to an e-mail
account that’s active on the target Mac/PC. At that point you simply open the
attachment MRA file and the ringtone is loaded into your iTunes library where
it will be available to load back to your iPhone via sync.

There are a couple of caveats I must include here:

1) On a Windows PC you need to have iTunes set as the default program for MRA
files so that opening the newly created/e-mailed ringtone will be loaded into
the iTunes structures (yes, it will “magically” copied to the right locations).
2) For Android phones you’ll need a conversion program (i.e., Switch) to
convert the M4A/MRA file into an MP3 file. This will require an additional
software library to create the MP3 on your PC. Since I don’t have an Android
phone I have no idea how to get a ringtone installed on said device, but as I
understand Android can be linked to a PC as just another drive I should think
this should be reasonably convenient using a COPY and PASTE.

I don't use AccessNote regularly, but I recall that the sync process doesn't
happen automatically. If you tap the button labelled "Sync all notes to
Dropbox" located near the top-right hand corner of the app's main screen, all
notes will be synced. I believe you need to do this every time you want your
notes to be updated. Try this out and see if that works. Meanwhile I'm sure
regular users of this app can provide additional clarification.

Re: Word to pages batch converter?

2016-09-26 Thread Grant
Hi Tim,

This is just a guess on my part, but Pages of course doesn't "save" to Word
format; it "exports" to Word. Do you think that could be why your app doesn't
function as expected? It actually causes features like auto-save to work
differently, too.

Re: Weird issue with Safari.

2016-09-26 Thread 'Catherine Turner' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I wonder if it's auto-completing the URL. Mine does this and makes a
menu-type sound while it's doing it, though it doesn't say anything
about smart text.

Does it still do it if you type a URL you've never been to before?

If it is auto-complete I don't know how to switch it off. Presumably
in preferences somewhere, if it can be switched off.
