RE: Update: Success in Deleting a Primary Disk Partition and Success in Creating a El Capitan Install Key

2016-06-19 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Thanks for that.

I need to get my head around the new disk utility interface,

I still keep a Yosemite installer and installed systems on a USB that allows
me to use the older style of disk utility.

I guess it wont be coming back with the Mac OS Siera

Subject: Update: Success in Deleting a Primary Disk Partition and Success in
Creating a El Capitan Install Key

Hello All,

Well, I am happy to report that, after a lot of fiddling around, as I did not
find any articles via Google that directly addressed my USB key partition
deletion problem, I was able to delete the partition, create a new El Capitan
USB install key which, I'm happy to say, runs without any problems.

To me, the Yosemite disk utility was more intuitive. In El Capitan, it would
seem that the Erase tab does all of the proverbial heavy lifting when it comes
to reformatting and deleting the primary disk partition.

The short of it is:

When you want to delete a primary partition, you must select the physical drive
in the disk selection table. Next, instead of going directly to the Partition
tab, as I kept doing, go to the Erase tab and select how you want the disk to
be reformatted; in so doing, you will erase the primary partition. To me, this
is not intuitive. However, this is how it works, in El Capitan.

All's well that ends well.

I hope that some of you find this helpful and should you need assistance in
using El Capitan disk utility, just let me know.

Mark

RE: Update on my issueRe: Urgent Help! Voiceover on my Mac got muted!!!

2016-06-19 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,
Either use the mute key which should be the F10 key on the function key row of
your keyboard,

Or on your touch pad do a three finguer double tap such as you’d do on your
iPhone or iPad.

using the VoiceOver keyboard commander preferences. At least this gives another
option if the trackpad gesture doesn’t work. It will not work if you are at the
lock screen in the password field, and the command to toggle VoiceOver won’t
work on the lock screen at all. Hearing the error tone when you press
COMMAND-F5 actually gives you one of the few indications that are available at
this point, which is that you are likely in the lock screen meaning you need to
get passed it before trying too much else. Once you are passed the lock screen,
using the commands to toggle VoiceOver and toggle mute are sometimes effective,
but not always. Sometimes if there are no apps that need your attention, you
can at least cleanly reboot the system by, say, pressing the POWER button for a
few seconds to bring up the shut down dialog, then pressing r for restart.

I am not sure why this occurs, and it may be that it only occurs on some Macs
but not others. Would love to hear from others on this.

Re: How Often Would I Need A Numb Pad

2016-06-19 Thread Ben J. Bloomgren
if you're doing specialized work, such as recording, audio production
etcetera, then you definitely will need a numpad as far as I've heard.
I, on the other hand, have a full wired keyboard with a numpad, and I
keep it tied to my Dell Inspiron E1505, which is running the deprecated
OS, Windows XP! That is to say, I really haven't missed the numpad on OSX.

RE: How Often Would I Need A Numb Pad

2016-06-19 Thread Simon Fogarty
I can’t say I’ve ever tried using the numpad for navigation but the thing I do
use is the touch pad, I’ve got the new magic touch pad 2, I find it a bit
harder to use than the older style but being able to use the touchpad of my
mac in the same way as the touch screan of my iPhone is great.
Keeps everything in alinement.

I had to setup my voiceover settings to allow me to use the touch pad that way
though.

Re: Xcode and the new upcomming free app.

2016-06-19 Thread Alex Hall
Swift Playgrounds is an app for teaching people how to code, or for programmers
to get used to Swift and the iOS SDKs. It can't be used to write a real app,
but given that it can access all the APIs, you could make a pretty complex
playground that does something cool. Still, you can't export it as an app or
anything. This comes from the presentation, no personal experience.

Hi,

One thing I wish they would do is make it easyer to remove the preview
pain in mail. As it stands now, you have to drag the slider bar to the
bottom of the screen and for someone who doesn't use a mouse or track

Donna,
I work in higher Ed as well. I have noticed the same thing. I am getting ready

something extravagant. That is, until I told them that jaws would cost close to
$1000 and therefore the cost would equal that of a Mac. Then they were OK with

You could harden the devices to make them more kid proof than they are out of

Maybe it’s my industry then because I’m not seeing the use of Windows nearly as
much. You still see it on the administrative side, there’s usually large
active directory farms and such but as far as the end clients laptops, almost
all Mac in my experience. Then again, I’m seeing Macs everywhere now,
Starbucks, on the train. It was shocking me the wide use of macs when we were
having the discussion of the mac disappearing because they are everywhere, at
least up here in the North East US.

I’ve also seen a lot of the back end Windows stuff being replaced with Linux.
There’s some real good open source alternatives out there and even Big

Maybe other industries are more Windows saturated. I’ve heard for example that

Will I Still Need A Dummy Monitor Load

2016-06-19 Thread Arnold Schmidt
It use to be that I would need a dummy monitor load to connect to my soon to be
acquired Mac Mini, being that I will not be using a monitor. Otherwise,
VoiceOver would become sluggish and almost unusable. Now, I read that the
modern computers and operating systems no longer need this load. Do I still
need it? I found one on Amazon, by Compulab, for $15. Thanks in advance for
any information.

Re: How Often Would I Need A Numb Pad

2016-06-19 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I have since decided to buy the wired keyboard. I will have the numb pad in
case I want to learn to use it. Plus, it will be about $50 less than the
wireless one.

  Hi!
Well that depends on how you use the keyboard.
There is a numpad commander so that the numpad keys acts as navigation keys
for Voiceover.
For example you navigate with numpad 6 and 4, 2 and 8.
You can interact with numpad 9 and stop interacting with numpad 7.
For me its really great but that does not say you agree.
  Hope that helps.

Re: Update on my issueRe: Urgent Help! Voiceover on my Mac got muted!!!

2016-06-19 Thread Grant
Hi Simon,

The system mute function (F10) does not do the same thing. There is a specific
“mute VoiceOver” toggle which is executed with the three-finger double-tap on
the trackpad. To assign it to a keystroke, you need to use VO-F8 to open the
Voice Over Utility, navigate to the Commanders section, choose the keyboard
commander tab, and assign it to a hotkey.

Very very urgent: Need help with audio input on my mac

2016-06-19 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Guys,

I have a sort of interesting situation going on here, and wanted to see if
anyone could shed some light on this before 3 PM eastern today, when I have to
do my Skype music lesson with my new student.

The thing is, she's wanting to have me help her with a few songs specifically
that she can't seem to figure out the chords to, and she's not at a position
where she can acquire sheet music, nor guitar tabs or the like. I really can't
go into more than that, as I protect my studentss' privacy, but anyway, here's
the issue.

I have a 16 channel audio interface, which connects via USB to my mac. The
problem is, with how my studio currently is designed, we're doing some
remodelling, so therefore for right now temporarily, I can't get my microphone
stand over near my digital piano. It's gotta be all the way across the room.

I have a USB microphone, but here is my question. If I use two different USB
ports on my mac, one for the interface, and one for my USB microphone, can I
then combine the two devices into one? I know that in audio/midi setup under
Utilities, I can create an aggregate device, which is great, and trust me, I've
done it many times before, but when doing so, it's normally so I can combine
the output of one device and the input of another. I've never tried taking the
input of two devices, and combining them into one.

Basically, what my objective in doing this is, is, I want to be able to use
that cheap little mike for now vbia USB to talk to this student, and have it
transmit my voice. But then, I'd like to be able to patch my piano directly
into the input rather than miking it. To do this though would require that I
connect a stereo audio patch cable from the line out of my piano, to the
red/white in on my interface. That definitely would work, but then, I can't
plug the microphone into the interface, being it's USB, and not XLR. That's
why I want to take the input from my interface, and the input of the USB mike,
and aggregate them both into one input device, if that makes sense.

Yes, theoretically, if the mike is an issue, I could just use my IPhone with
the Skype app, but then I can't record the Skype call with Skhype Call Recorder
from Matthew Galligor, which she is wanting me to do. It's not a big deal if I
can't get the piano patched directly. It's not a show stopper, but that said,
it would really really be a very nice touch, and definitely would increase my
credibility of professionalism. If I can manage to get it aggregated, then
I'll be in business. The rest I know exactly! how to configure. I just don't
know if you can combine two inputs, or does it have to be one in, one out, at
which point, that wouldn't work in my scenareo.

Thank you for any help.

Chris.

Well, you can but try. May I suggest you attempt the agrigation and then call
the Skype test to see what’s what? My guess is it will not work because the
Skype API will not allow access to your core audio.

Re: any thoughts on Mac OS Sierra?

2016-06-19 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Saqib,

Remember that there are many parallels with Windows. For example, where in
Windows you would use the Control Key, on the Mac you will often use the
Command key.

I don't know if you have access to a Braille embosser or a notetaker, but one
thing I did at the beginning was emboss a list of the commands I used most
often. That way, when I was in the middle of working and needed to know how to
do something, I could just refer to my braille command list. It made things a
lot easier.

Also, one thing that flubbed me up a lot in the beginning was that I would
forget to interact with stuff. Not sure if that's an issue for you, but it
might be something to keep in mind.

Good luck!
Cheers,
Donna

I work in higher Ed as well. I have noticed the same thing. I am getting

Hi

I have this late 2011 Macbook Pro 13 here with no num pad, and I can use
VoiceOver absolutely fine, especially on El Capitan when I can now use either
or both the caps lock and control-option keys as VoiceOver modifiers.

Re: Mail Preview Paine Was: any thoughts on Mac OS Sierra?

2016-06-19 Thread Barry Hadder
You do not need a mouse or trackpad to do this.
In clasic view, Move vo to the horizontal splitter between the messages list
and the preview pain and interact with it. Move it with vo until you hear 100
percent.

Hi,

One thing I wish they would do is make it easyer to remove the preview pain in
mail. As it stands now, you have to drag the slider bar to the bottom of the
screen and for someone who doesn't use a mouse or track pad very often this is
a pain.

Well unfortunately, I wasn't able to figure things out in time to get my two
audio devices
aggregated together, see my previous message. I'm not saying it can't be done,
as much as I got side tracked, and didn't have the chance to try.

This said, in general, the Skype call was a major major success! I'd still be
interested in knowing if this would work, for the future. I'll have to try it
out and see.

Anyway, thanks everyone for your help.

I have to disagree with Alex on the insert key functionality.

My system which I believe is default has insert-1 as next link insert -2 as
previous link insert-3 as next-unvisited link
insert -4 as next header

macOS Sierra beta lets Mac users rearrange third-party menu bar extras
9to5Mac

It's been a pain-point for some Mac users for a while now: the inability to
rearrange third-party menu bar extras. Sure, it's been possible to move around
stock menu bar extras by simply holding the Command key while dragging the
icon, but third-party icons are no longer off limits. Indeed, the macOS Sierra
beta makes it possible... Read the full story

SMS forwarding does not work properly.

2016-06-19 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
For some reason sms forwarding does not work for me on my ipod touch or macbook
air.
I don’t get any code to type into my iphone so it can be activated.
I have logged in and out from Icloud with all devices but so far no luck.
The Iphone is the Iphone SE and the ipod touch is the 5th gen.
The macbook air is a macbook from 2015.
This is really frustrating as it has worked before.
Any thoughts on this?

No idea, sorry. Just tried it on my iPod Touch running the latest beta, and it

Make sure you are actually connected to the net on both devices and that

RE: SMS forwarding does not work properly.

2016-06-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Anders,

I think you're on the right track.

Do the following in your attempt to enable iMessage forwarding:

1.
Sign out of all of your iMessage devices.

2.
Just to be sure all is well, sign out of face time, also.

3.
Shut down all of your devices.

4.
Reboot your WiFi router.

5.
First, power on your MacBook Air, making certain that you are connected to the
web.

6.
On the Macbook Air, be sure to be signed into iMessage, iCloud, and Face time.
Also, make certain that you have the iMessage app open on your Desktop and that
focus is placed on it.

7.
Now, power on your iPhone and sign into iMesage using the same Apple ID as you
used on your Air.

8.
At this point, attempt to enable iMessage forwarding. During this process, you
will receive a 6 digit code on your Mac, which is to be entered on your phone.

Mark
