Re: odd but very frustrating problem

Either connect your computer to the Internet using an Ethernet cable, or try
changing the wireless channel of your router. It sounds to me very much like
interference between the frequencies used by your wireless network and your
cordless headset.

Re: iDevice names

2016-04-07 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You can do it in iTunes as well. Interact with the device name near where the
battery level is and click, and it becomes an edit field. Now you can change
it and press return. Neat.

Re: Request for Tips on Using Screen Sharing

2016-04-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There are several applications out there for doing this and each has its own
features. Generally there are the web conferencing type solutions and the
remote log in to my computer solutions.

For the Web Conferencing type solutions (I think even skype has a version) you
connect together each logging into the same conference ID. Then the sharing
side clicks a share button and the display will appear in a browser window.

Back to my Mac is an example of the other type of connection. In this case both
connections login with the same account on a server. Essentially you register a
computer with the service and then a background process is available. When you
login to that service from a different computer it will list the computers
currently listening on your account and you pick the one you want. At that
point you take control of the system.

Also, in most cases the systems on either side of the connection don’t need to
be running the same operating system.
con
Will you need Voiceover directed through the connection also?

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Hi,
Another work around until this gets fixed by Google is to download an older
version of Chrome, such as version 39 or something like that, install that one,
use it to sign in, then, update back to the newest version. I just did this the
other day since I couldn’t figure out the sign in process either.
I hope this helps,

El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Hi all,

I am wondering to those of you who have installed El Capitan is it
worth installing and have the bugs been squashed relating to VoiceOver
in the current build?

One of the reasons I didn't jump to put it on my machine was the
horrible bugs when first released.

Any insight appreciated.

I use El Capitan daily on my macbook pro mid 2012 and it works just
fine. Of course their are occasional bugs, but that's expected. I'd
say go ahead and upgrade. Also, make a time machine backup if you can.
That way if you seriously hate it, you can downgrade. In my opinion
Yosemite was a horrible release, and El Capitan beets it by a long
shot.

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread E.T.
I just finished a clean install of El Capitan. I still have a bit of
work to complete but here is what I see so far.

VoiceOver will say “There is no item with keyboard focus”. This
occurs fairly randomly, both in native Apple apps and third party apps.
You lose focus of the app you were in.

When I press VO m I get Finder busy. Same when I press VO m m I get
status menu busy. Also in some areas system preferences busy.

My biggest beef is speech and Bluetooth. Bluetooth headsets no
longer connect reliably at startup. Sometimes will lose connectivity
while working in apps.

Sometimes speech goes into some nether area and cycling command f5
brings it and the Bluetooth headset back, sometimes not. I see not
consistent pattern.

Sometimes speech will fade in and out and cycling command f5 does
fix that.

Really, honestly, it's not that bad. If you want a system without bugs, build
it yourself because it just does not exist. I think you'll find it difficult to
produce. Sighted people have bugs too. It's not just us. In my opinion, upgrade
and deal with what comes. It's the only way the bugs will possibly get
squashed.

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
As of El Capitan 10.11.4, I downgraded to Yosemite 10.10.5. Yosemite has
issues, but nothing like the nonsense in El Crap, which Apple are clearly never
going to get around to fixing until macOS 12 gets released. Activities and
hotspots, which both matter to me, for example, are still buggered. And, while
some issues from Yosemite did get fixed, notably the substantially improved
responsiveness of sounds and loss of position on a web page and the positioning
of the cursor in Mail, I’m much more able to work around those than activities
and hotspot issues. Others have already mentioned other little things, like
the focus issues in the stores and Safari text navigation. As I have said
before now on this list, I often appear to be surprised by how much nicer the
experience of OS X is after you downgrade. It’s a shame.

Thanks for the candid feedback.

Sounds like El Capitan is a real productivity killer.

I, too, downgraded after the initial install.

"Its not that bad" is purely subjective. Its that bad if you must
rely on hearing accurate feedback via Voiceover. This is not annoying,
its beyond that.

Now if you have solutions to the speech and Bluetooth issues I
brought up, then it might really be "Its not that bad".

I didn’t read about your specific bluetooth or voice issues but personally I
find El Capitan pretty stable and good although I do run the public betas.
Right now though I’m on 10.11.4 like everyone else and not hating it. But
that’s me. Others may have specific gripes that just aren’t in my usage model.

Scott,
I have posted a time or two about these things. This is why I did a
clean install, in the hopes of correcting many issues. I do not hate El
Cap, I hate the aggravations. (smiles)

The VO issues made setting up the clean install extremely painful at
times.

I looked into running diagnostics to test my hardware but for this

If you’re experiencing slowness directly after a completely clean install, try
an NVRAM reset. Press Command-Option-P-R and hold them as soon as you hear the
chime at boot. Keep held until you hear the chime at least twice in succession.

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread Terje Strømberg
No big problems with El Capitan here. Restart voice over occasionally. Normal
vo comands in Safari. Have not learned hot spot. vo-i is often used in Safari.
Sometimes i get busy in apps and Safari, but not often. Late 2012 iMac.

Its easy to use Time Machine backup. At least with Time Capsule backup. Make an
El Capitan backup after clean install and tweaking voice over and apps before
you get creative so you have one backup to clean the table.

Take care

i am thinking your clean install maybe is wrong i.e. you did not boot into the

install. Do not download from iCloud and do not log in before OSX is installed.
Download each app one and one from payed apps in app store. Then first log in

RE: Request for Tips on Using Screen Sharing

2016-04-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jonathan,

Thank you so much for the help.

To answer your question< I use VoiceOver so I assume it needs to be running on
both machines, right? My primary goal will be to adjust the remote computer's
system preferences, etc.

For some reason, I thought that OS X offered a easy-to-use native utility for
such endeavors.

I would prefer to avoid using a third-party solution, if possible.

Unless there is a more native option, as far as I can tell, Back to my Mac will
probably be my choice, I think (smile).

Subject: Re: Request for Tips on Using Screen Sharing

Jonathan

Hi!
Strange.
I just did a reinstall a clean one and for me things works like a charm.
I had problems at first because i never use the login screen but now i have
learned that too.
Chrome is the only problem so far but its a small problem which doesn’t bother
me much as safari works great on some pages and chrome on some.

you’ve got a clean install. If not, don’t forget to do that first with Disk

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

I like El Cap and don’t find it a head ache at all. I don’t see many bugs
either and if anything does go wrong, just turn voice over off and on by
pressing Command F5.

It’s better than windows because I use windows every day and always have
problems with my windows although it’s a work machine. I’ll only say that at
present, I can’t remove files from one directory to another and have to shut my
work machine down each time I try. Don’t have any of that crap on my Mac. So
if you are not satisfied, go and use a windows machine then you can have
crashes and so on as much as you like. I’m not favouring the Mac or windows,
just saying that I get frustrated with windows as I never get my problem
resolved even though I get technical help. I get told that I’m working on a
network and thus files moving to one directory to another is slow. So each
time I’m here at home, my experience on the Mac is unfrustrated and very
peaceful if I can put it that way. No problems with Jaws, just an easy
experience with Voiceover. Just what I think.

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread Sadam Ahmed
Everyone has different workflows.

As another list member has pointed out activities and using Safari where
VoiceOver jumps all over the place in El Capitan is very painful.

In comparison I find my BootCamp version of Windows 10 and JAWS 17 to be
remarkably stable.

Thanks for writing in. I do really appreciate the feedback.

Best regards,

Sadam Ahmed

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread Scott
My experience mirrors yours more closely I think. I freshly installed from
Crucial USB flash drive with out issue. That in combination with SSD makes for
a fairly speedy and clean install. One thing once in a while I get stuck where
it won’t read my status, a simple VO restart clears the issue. That’s all I
can think of. Perfect, no but not bad from what I’ve run in to. Again like I
said I may be to dumb to realize. I have before and will freely admit now my
understanding of computing is great through layer 4 and then all this
application / presentation layer stuff just baffles me. I suck at working with
applications compared to many of my blind counterparts including some really
sharp folks on this list but to be fair I sucked in JFW as well.:) I get my
self in to terminal or ssh in to the right place and then I’m productive.:)

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

You mean it just works.:)

And that is the apple way. Or it was anyway.

That’s the hope then, . My experience is like yours I still find El Capitan to
be the worst named but smoother running of the OS X instances. I’m thinking
about it though and I wonder if my experience is colored by the fact I’m using
such better hardware now than I was when running some of the previous versions.
I went from 2011 laptops to 2015 all with SSD and max memory so this may
explain why I feel I’m fighting with my computer less when in fact I’m
experiencing more bugs but my subjective experience is still better.

Re: El Capitan and VoiceOver.

2016-04-07 Thread Scott
And see, I was thinking of doing a youtube posting of me taking an HP Laptop
running windows 10 with JFW to the firing range and putting a 308 (7.62MM X51)
round right through the center. I have had through out my life including now
nothing but fear and loathing with Microsoft products with the exception of the
Xbox line of products. (I wish that level of quality persisted through the rest
of MS) So we all have different experiences and like you said work flows. JFW
to me being an after thought to the OS has always been unstable. But go with
what works, I just thought it was interesting your experience was 180 degrees
out of phase with mine when it came to windows.

Mark, if you get this to work with voice over will you post a quick how too?
We were talking about this on the blind sysadmins list and didn’t come up with
a good solution.

Thanks

Wow, if I could only put one of these on my money, mind or time we’d be good.:)

This sounds like a good idea for all sorts of small things form keys to glasses.

Cool and thank you for taking the time to point me in the right direction.

 Hi,

I got the Apple watch sport with the sort of rubberized band, but I
find the band irritates my wrist a little bit; so I want to try
 another band.

The coolest thing I do with the watch is the ApplePay on JetBlue as
they accept it on flights. I had thought the watch would work well as
a boarding pass, but the phone is a lot easdier to orient at TSA & at
 the gate.

I think it is cool also how it can track your pulse and that may be
 helpful when working out.

Also at CSUN I heard how the Tile app (an app for tracking Bluetooth
tiles that you use to find objects like keys or a wallet) is more
accessible on the watch than the iPhone. Basically on the iPhone it
announces an unlabeled element for each tile where as I am told on the
watch it properly announces the name of each tile like wallet, keys,
 back pack, etc.

Finally I like seeing my next meeting readily available right on the
home screen of the watch, and I agree the complications could be cool.

That being said I have not worn the watch for a month or so again
probably because of the issue with the band but I want to get back in
 to it again!

Re: Request for Tips on Using Screen Sharing

2016-04-07 Thread Carter Temm
Currently, you can't pass audio from one machine to another using built in
screen sharing. In the past, I've had friends call me on Skype or services like
that and use an application such as soundflower or loopback to route audio.
Sounds really tedious, right? But that's the only thing I know to get this to
work

It’s pretty much doing what FaceTime does when you get on a call on your mac.
It isolates any other audio to optimize audio quality when using screen sharing
session. I wish Apple would allow you to hear other ends of the computer(s) for
VO instants.

It's fixed in Canary, so why not use latest that has the latest in
accessibility, performance, security, stability ,etc. It's never a good
idea to use older versions of browsers, especially at least 10 versions old
as it's a significant risk in security, stability, etc.

win10 bootcamp, mac hd partition not showing up

2016-04-07 Thread Juan Hernandez
Hi All,

On my MacBook Pro, I have windows 10 in a bootcamp. There I cansee the
Macintosh HD partition and can get files from it. On my iMac, same setup,
win10 on bootcamp, I can’t seem to find my Macintosh HD partition. Does anyone
have any ideas?

Best,

Juan
