Another question i should know, turning off auto correcting of spelling

2016-03-13 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi good people. Here’s another Mac question i should know the answer to after
so many years of Mac use: Where do i go to turn off automatic correction of
spelling? That feature is driving me up the walls.:-) I know you can turn Auto
correcting of spelling off on a per app basis but what if i want to turn off
the feature entirely?
Thanks for any answers.

It's a bit tricky to find. System Preferences > keyboard > Text tab. After the
automatic substitutions you'll see the checkboxes for spellchecking and smart
quotes/dashes.

Re: Lost VoiceOver in Recovery Manager Not Sure If MacBook Air Is Doing a Cold Reboot from Scratch

2016-03-13 Thread Mika Pyyhkala
Thanks for your tips and background on this.

My roommate read me the choose network screen, and then I was able to
activate VoiceOver. I would say it took 4-6 minutes to download the
recovery partition and there was no way to know besides just trying
Command+F5 regarding when the download was complete.

I agree there should be a better solution such as being able to type
in the SSID and password. I was really surprised to see this issue on
a Mac since Apple thought out the out-of-box VoiceOver experience so
well.

I did initially erase the hard drive with disk utility in order to do
a clean OS install.

Best,
Mika

Oh yeah. So will I. I'll probably be one of the first ones to spring for
the public beta once it's released. And if our Macs can handle Fuji, I
hope we'll get to use Siri.

shooting video with the iPhone camera?

2016-03-13 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

The recent passing of a close friend's mother has me wanting to create a sort
of video family history. I'd like to use video rather than just recording
audio, because I'd like eventually to make it available to other family members
who are sighted and would I'm sure appreciate having pictures of the people
talking. Has anyone done this? Any pointers on how to actually get good
video, i.e. focus the camera correctly and stuff like that??
TIA,
Donna

Re: Answering a call on the mac

2016-03-13 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
You can answer any call using the Mac that is if you configure all your devices
to pick up the calls meaning make sure your Mac, iPhone is answering face time
calls (I.e. turn face time on). Any call comes in is a face time call on the
Mac.

In the Notification centre, I have my face time preference as alert so it
brings up an notification to tell me that I can answer or decline the call.

Hope this is helpful and not too complicated for all the new mac users. I’d
like to welcome anyone new to this list, I unfortunately can’t always answer
the questions on this list, due to work commitments, but wish I could
contribute more than I am doing.

Thanks.

Kawal.

My memory is that 10.3 had UI Scripting the Macintosh equivalent of Microsoft’s
UIA to query applications and provide links for accessibility tools. The next
version after that was the one that had VoiceOver, but it did not have nearly
as much functionality as our current VoiceOver.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: shooting video with the iPhone camera?

2016-03-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
Hi Donna,

I do this mostly with action type scenes such as our dogs and cats but for
interviews, such as what you are wanting to do, it can be much easier.

If you can, place your phone on a stand that allows it to be straight and
vertical. This may require propping it up and anchoring it on both sides.

For interviews, I’d do them in profile, the person in profile that is. Position
the camera to the side of you and the person forming sort of a triangle. People
get nervous looking into a camera lens. They will be much more natural looking
at you and telling their stories.
I would have someone check to make sure all of a person is in frame. You can
use a kitchen table as a nice setting. Try to eliminate as much exterior sound
as possible but keep the good things, like a clock and birds outside. If the
person has things to show you, like pictures or items, a favorite cup, spoon
collection, quilt, etc. then you play to the camera.

Unlike the iOS camera, the video doesn’t tell you if there are faces in the
shot. That’s why you will most likely need sighted help to position it exactly.

Good luck. It sounds like an interesting project. I’ve been wanting to do this
with my dad for a while now. You’ve just inspired me.

Re: shooting video with the iPhone camera?

2016-03-13 Thread Donna Goodin
This is really helpful, Jenine. I didn't realize that when shooting video you
aren't told whether there's a face in the picture. I think I'll try a few
practice runs using your strategies with my husband, and see how it goes.

I hope you do do the same with your dad. One of the things my friend has
talked about is all the stories that are lost now that her mom is gone. That
made me think of all the relatives and their stories that I know that my
brother's kids have probably never heard. Happily my parents are vibrant and
healthy, but they won't always be, so I'd like to start working on this now.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: shooting video with the iPhone camera?

2016-03-13 Thread Phil Halton
One little hint about video orientation. The orientation of the phone when you
actually start the video determines the orientation of the video itself. That
is, if you start off with your phone held vertically and start the video, no
matter if you re-orient the phone to landscape the entire video will be in
portrait mode. This may sound very simplistic but it drove me nuts for a long
time until an Apple tech explained this to me. So, you can't start the video
holding your phone in portrait mode, and then think oh I'll switch to landscape
mode. That won't work, and your video will be in portrait mode. Good luck

Re: Entering passwords for 1 password on Mac

2016-03-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Generally, I just allow the browser plugin to prompt me to save a password and
then have no issues with using the command-\ to have one password regurgitate
that password into the password field.

Chris has done a good job of creating highly reproducible bug reports with
audio recording, perhaps this is what AgileBits needs to eliminate this bug,
that I saw in the version 4 but have not been able to reproduce in version 6.1.
I expect the left-to-right vs right to left issue is something that just
occurs when VoiceOver is running and perhaps is related to how they mask the
passwords.

I haven’t figured out the usefulness of non-web passwords with 1Password, I
tend to just use keychain for these.

What I especially like about 1 password, it works better than keychain access
for having my password “vault” have a different and more secure login than my
login password. The second advantage is that 1Password will prompt to save
passwords even when the input field for the password says don’t allow this.

Yes, there is dash lane but a 1 year subscription to that is more expensive
than 1-password and I find the way that dash lane pushes icons into the HTML to
be obtrusive.

Take care,

Jonathan

Re: shooting video with the iPhone camera?

2016-03-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
Glad I could help, Donnna. Truth is that my nephew, who is now 14 and partially
sighted, and who makes a ton of videos using his phone and iPad, gave me the
tips about focus and such. He went into extreme detail about how to position
things and how far back to have the camera. I had to bite my lip to keep from
laughing. He does these videos on YouTube using action figures and plush toys
and such. there’s a name for it but I can’t recall at the moment. He said he
hates recording people because they are harder to direct. gotta love it.

I think this one should be fairly easy though. Just put the camera in one
position where it gets most of your subject, so that triangle I talked about is
going to have one shorter side, if that makes sense. Again that may take some
vision to align the way you want it.

Good point there. That was lesson 1 from my nephew and you can tell I’m either
not a good student or just took that one for granted. He loves landscape mode
for action stuff but I’m thinking for interviews, portrait would work better,
less of the frame to worry about. The only problem comes if your subject likes
to move around when he or she talks. Then just move the phone back a bit.

creating shortcuts

2016-03-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
I’m fairly sure you can do this on the Mac but can anyone tell me how?

I’m in Mail and I want a single key combination to move a message to a specific
folder, saved, receipts, etc.

How do I create that? I almost called it a macro…and that should tell you how
long I’ve been using computers.

Re: Another question i should know, turning off auto correcting of spelling

2016-03-13 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

OK, that is under System Preferences, then go to keyboard.

Under keyboard, look in the text tab, and down near the bottom of the
window, you should see the checkbox to enable/disable this.

Hi good people. Here’s another Mac question i should know the answer to
after so many years of Mac use: Where do i go to turn off automatic
correction of spelling? That feature is driving me up the walls.:-) I know
you can turn Auto correcting of spelling off on a per app basis but what if
i want to turn off the feature entirely?

Thanks for any answers.

Re: preview pain in L Capitan

2016-03-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

For anybody that finds this too difficult, I have an Applescript that does this
for you that works in both Yosemite and ElC. Since it uses UI Scripting, I need
to distribute it as an app.

In any case, just let me know at jon.c.c...@gmail.com if you want a copy of the
application.

Best wishes,

Re: creating shortcuts

2016-03-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
You can do this with AppleScript, though I have not actually worked that code.
Yo would need to either use the Script menu or else the keyboard commander to
associate the AppleScript with a keystroke.
If you are not up to coding AppleScript I have read that the PlugIn MailActOn
should do this. I don’t know any blind users of the plugin and I am not sure if
it is actively developed.

Let us know if you want to proceed.

I do not know if it will work or not, but you can try a to finger double tap

This is the only thing I can think of to try.

Re: Is it possible to rename a photo or video?

2016-03-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
That option of the 2-finger double tap and hold to rename doesn’t seem to work
for me. I can put in the new name but it disappears.

what does work is to bring up the picture in TapTap See, have it recognized and
that will stay in your camera roll. It’s quite handy. I don’t think you can
change the descriptions but at least you have some idea of what the picture is.

I know the art form you are talking about, my brother-in-law is really into
that, too.

Have any thoughts about the best distance for the camera?
Cheers,
Donna

 Hi all,

The recent passing of a close friend's mother has me wanting to create a
sort of video family history. I'd like to use video rather than just
recording audio, because I'd like eventually to make it available to other
family members who are sighted and would I'm sure appreciate having
pictures of the people talking. Has anyone done this? Any pointers on
how to actually get good video, i.e. focus the camera correctly and stuff
 like that??

Oh yeah. So will I. I'll probably be one of the first ones to spring for
the public beta once it's released. And if our Macs can handle Fuji, I
hope we'll get to use Siri.

I’m thinking 3 to 3.5 feet away from the subject would work but again, have
someone check it. If you’re going to view this on a big screen, maybe you don’t
want a giant head there. *grin*

Oh I swear if I’d had this kind of technology available to me as a kid, I’d be

Position the camera to the side of you and the person forming sort of a
triangle. People get nervous looking into a camera lens. They will be much
more natural looking at you and telling their stories.
I would have someone check to make sure all of a person is in frame. You
can use a kitchen table as a nice setting. Try to eliminate as much
exterior sound as possible but keep the good things, like a clock and
birds outside. If the person has things to show you, like pictures or
items, a favorite cup, spoon collection, quilt, etc. then you play to the
 camera.

Unlike the iOS camera, the video doesn’t tell you if there are faces in
the shot. That’s why you will most likely need sighted help to position it
 exactly.

Good luck. It sounds like an interesting project. I’ve been wanting to do
this with my dad for a while now. You’ve just inspired me.

Re: Is it possible to rename a photo or video?

2016-03-13 Thread Donna Goodin
OK, I've gotten the double-tap and hold to work, sort of. Like Jenine, the
first time I tried it the name didn't stick But the second time I tried it it
did. However, the copy on my phone is being renamed, but the label isn't being
carried over to my Mac. I think I'm going to write to the Accessibility folks
and see what they have to say.

OK the website for MailActON is
https://www.indev.ca/MailActOn.html
It appears you can download and use for 30 days free and then it costs $30 to
purchase a license to use the software.
One thing that appeals to me was the ability to automate the sent folder so
that messages and responses are in the same place. However, keeping my mail
organized was not worth the cost of the software for me.

I just threw together the below AppleScript that appears to work. ——— Start of
AppleScript
tell application "Mail"
set destination to mailbox "2016 Archive"
set selectedMessages to the selected messages of message viewer 1
repeat with MailItem in selectedMessages
move MailItem to destination
end repeat
end tell

Do you have any details on this? I know the security options changed, but I had
not seen any scripting changes that I had noticed. On the other hand, Macintosh

two unrelated questions: contacts and DAISY or BRF reading on the mac?

2016-03-13 Thread Aleeha Dudley
Hello all,
I’m trying to find answers to these two questions.
First, for some reason, my contacts are not syncing between my Mac, iPhone, and
iPad. All of them have contacts enabled under iCloud settings. Does anyone know
how to fix this?
Second, I’m trying to find an application for the Mac or iOS devices that works
well when reading BRF or DAISY files, but will also work well with a Braille
display. I need to be able to read these books in Braille, so i’m looking for
any ideas.
Thanks,
Aleeha Dudley

sheild for USB cable into MacBook Pro

2016-03-13 Thread Jenine Stanley
I am on a quest to eliminate a wicked noise when using my mixer via USB port on
either of my Apple computers, a MacBook Pro mid 2012 or an iMac, 2014. I’ve
narrowed it down and the noise is coming from the USB connector. It’s the cable
between the mixer and the computer and one end is USB while the other is square
like a printer cable and goes into the mixer. I’m curious to see if a standard
printer cable will work but if not, and I don’t blow up everything trying, are
there shields, like Ferrite beads, you can attach to cables to prevent this
situation?

Anyone else have this issue?

2016-03-13 Thread Seyoon Choi
What method are you willing to use to transfer your downloaded book(s) to NLS
player? You can either copy and paste the zip files into a blank USB drive and
plug it into the side of the player. Additionally, if you have the blank
cartridge with USB to USB extension cable you could use the same method. There
is no need to extract the downloaded book.

Re: creating shortcuts

2016-03-13 Thread Grant
Hi Jenine,

You can do this using the favourites bar as well. If you explore the main
window of the Mail application using VO+LEFT and VO+RIGHT, you’ll see that
prior to the mailboxes table there is a section listing favourite folders. This
is a horizontal bar that visually appears near the top of the window, and
folders are arranged from left to right. There are built-in keystrokes that you
can use once a folder is in the favourites bar. To jump to the leftmost folder,
you’d press COMMAND+1. For the next folders, you’d use COMMAND+2, COMMAND+3 and
so forth. And to move selected messages to any of these folders, simply use the
CONTROL KEY along with these same keystrokes. For example, I have an archive
folder in my favourites bar which is at position 2, so I can use
COMMAND+CONTROL+2 to immediately archive a message.

AppleVis did a great tutorial on the Mail App which covers this feature, and I
believe the instructions are still applicable. Here is the link:
http://www.applevis.com/guides/mac-apps-mac-os-x-voiceover/macs-mail-app-explained

Hope this helps.

Re: Answering a call on the mac

2016-03-13 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
You need to sign in to iCloud using your ID and then make sure your face time
is on. Also make sure you have a valid e-mail or phone number associated with
your Face Time. As you have done the configuration in your IOS then it should
work on your Mac.

Please anyone correct me if I have missed any steps.

Hope this is helpful.

2016-03-13 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
There was also a “Spoken Interface Preview”, which was the precursor to
VoiceOver, introduced as a separate download for Mac OS X 10.3.

Leopard was when things really started to shape up, and when Alex was
introduced. It’s when I jumped on board the Macintosh train for sure.

Re: Entering passwords for 1 password on Mac

2016-03-13 Thread Grant
Hey GS,

If you purchased 1Password through the iOS or Mac App Store and feel that the
accessibility issues preclude you from using the app, you can request a refund
from Apple. The easiest way to do this is through the receipt you received from
the iTunes Store. I don’t have one in front of me but I believe you click on a
“report a problem” link and that will begin the process.

Best,

Grant

Mac Calendar & iCloud

2016-03-13 Thread Marc

Latest version of OS X El Capitan

I tried searching around the archives but don’t think this has been
addressed.

The main problem is this: When I create a new event on the Mac, it is not
being pushed to iCloud and subsequently to my iPhone. I create the event on
the Mac and then log into iCloud.com and the event is not there.

On the Mac, I am signed into iCloud. The calendar check box is checked in
system preferences under iCloud and Internet Services. On the Mac, calendar
receives new events from iCloud if I create them on my iPhone. If I create
them on the iPhone, the events also appear on iCloud.com. This tells me
that I am signed into iCloud properly on the iPhone and I believe on the
Mac as well since I can receive the calendar events.

I also noticed that when I create an event in the calendar app on the Mac
and post to my Google calendar, it will not go to the Internet either. When
I create a calendar event on the iPhone and select the Google calendar it
will appear on the Mac and on the online Google calendar.

When a family member creates an event on our shared family calendar it
appears on both the iPhone and the Mac. However, when I create a calendar
event on the Mac and try to select the family calendar, it appears on the
Mac only and is not pushed to the iPhone, the shared family calendar, or
the online iCloud.

On the Mac, in the Calendar Sources table, I only have the home, work, and
family calendars that are directly under iCloud. There does not appear to
be any local calendars that are “on my Mac.”

I feel like I have read through a million message boards, signed in and out
of iCloud, toggled on and off calendar in iCloud system preferences, and
basically pulled out all of my hair. I checked my wi-fi connection and it
is fine. It seems like a lot of people have the problem but nobody appears
to have a working solution.

Can anybody shed some light on why events created on my Mac will not appear
on the iPhone or the iCloud web site? Does anybody know about checking
ports on the Mac? Could my ISP somehow be blocking something? I read some
posts that people suggested that the family sharing could be fouling things
up. I am way beyond warranty, so I cannot call Apple.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks
