RE: Is Java safe to install in Windows VM's?

2016-02-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
I'm not sure I'd say it's safe but it's sadly needed for a lot of websites and
the same goes for flash,
Both java and flash are a pain but for some reason still needed.

I am using a website that relies on Adobe flash player and Java applets. I
remember from the days of windows before I went completely over to mac that
Java was replete with security holes. I remember it was recommended to
uninstall java for a while there. Has it been fixed to the point where it's OK
to install Java in your Internet explorer browser without exposure to a lot of
security risks?

RE: Is Java safe to install in Windows VM's?

2016-02-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
Another rthing I'd think of doing is create a snapshot of the base image so if
there are issues when / if you install java and or flash then you can get rid
of that problematic vm and run your snapshot which is a clean creation.

You can’t use internet explorer with out security risks.:)

One of the benefits of using a VM is you can contain the damage so it’s a
little less critical. Now if this is your VM you do all your banking from and
such I wouldn’t recommend it but the advantage of VMs is you can spin up all
you need with out the expense of physical hardware and resources. So are there
security issues yes, are they a problem for you, probably not since you’re
limiting the blast radius by being with a VM. Maybe someone more development
minded would respond with greater clue but if it were me I’d say this is the
reason or a reason we use VMs to help keep isolated environments.

How’s that?

Enabling Apple Music in iTunes under Windows XP

2016-02-03 Thread Ben J. Bloomgren
Hi all,

I was playing with iTunes over here on this old PC I've got here. I haven't
ever enabled Apple Music there, but I'd like to do so. I found an Apple Support
article about enabling the iCloud music library in preferences, but I see no
such thing. And yes, I have looked in every tab under there. What do you
recommend that I do?

Thanks,

Ben

Scanning program for the Mac

2016-02-03 Thread denise avant
Hi all,
I believe that there is a popular scanning program for the Mac called Abby
Fine Reader Pro. Can this program be bought in the Mac app store? If not, where
can I get it? How much is it? How accessible is it and how easy is it to
learn? Are there audio tutorials demonstrating it?
On a related matter, I am wondering what would be a good scanner that processes
images quickly? I have a Panasonic portable scanner that I use for travel and
find it takes several seconds to scan a page. I really don’t need anymore for
travel since I have the KNFB Reader Mobile on my Iphone. So, I’m in the market
for something better. I should say I’m using it with a 2013 MacBook air with
the fastest processor for that time. I’m not sure if its the scanner or the
MacBook air that causes the slow processing speed.
thanks for any input.

P.S.
I would like a scanner that processes quickly, but does not take up a lot of
space.

Re: Wireless printer

2016-02-03 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi!
I just purchased an all-in-one scanner printer thing. It is a Brother
MFC2700DW. I installed it effortlessly and it prints and scans wonderfully.
It came with a wireless installation utility and Cabled it to my mac and it saw
the settings and I was up and printing in 5 minutes or so, and all the options
I need for controlling the printer are available in the print menu.
It does have an intimidating number of buttons but they are mostly for faxing
which I will never use because I don't have a landline.
Hope this helps.

AppNap and you should be able to find out more about it on the web. I remember

Re: Is Java safe to install in Windows VM's?

2016-02-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
One interesting fact, is that I recently read that Oracle was going to stop
development of the JAVA plugin so the developer of this course is going to need
to migrate to JavaScript in the near future. I believe Angular JS is a good
tool for this type of application, and I have been trying to figure out how
well Angular JS is for accessibility. I do know that a major education services
site that has a reputation as being inaccessible is rewriting everything in
angular JS and is wanting to add an accessibility master to each scrum team.

Re: Iphone slow on wifi.

2016-02-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I read an article recently that the iPhone by default opens two connections one
cellular and one WiFi and shares the traffic between them. If your cell
service is week in your house this might be the issue. I read about this on
tidbits.com in the last three months. Finding the checkbox they discussed and
turning off this feature did improve my phone performance.

You can also bring up the contextual menu of the app in question on the Dock.
Under options there, you can find a startup option.

Java and Flash are both in this category. So far as I know, the security flaws
are not Windows-specific, so even running Flash or a Java browser plug-in
under OS X wouldn't necessarily overcome security issues.

As with all software, be sure that it's up to date, including the latest
security updates, and that you keep it current.

I don't run Flash at all, and I don't have a Java browser plug-in installed on
any of my systems. On the other hand, I don't need any Web sites that use
these technologies.

I like the Logitech Bluetooth keyboard that I bought a few years ago due to
the good tactile response of the keys while typing. It charges its battery
via USB. This model lacks a numeric key pad however.

Re: Enabling Apple Music in iTunes under Windows XP

2016-02-03 Thread Christohper-Mark Gilland
Ben,

Are you signed into your Apple ID, and is your Apple ID authorized on that
system? If the answer to either, or both, of these is no, then that's why
you're not seeing the option. Both of those things must be done first.

Chris.

  Thanks,

  Ben

Re: Iphone slow on wifi.

2016-02-03 Thread Christohper-Mark Gilland
Wo! I haven't seen this article, and I don't see a link in your message,
unless I missed it. I myself am not having this issue, however, that said,
my best friend who's also on this list often times have signal issues left
and right. What's really weird is, he's got a 2300 square foot home. I've
been there before and seen it first hand. He does have an AT&T microcell
tower, which helps a little bit, but sometimes, his signal goes totally ape
crud on him, even on HD calling. I've helped get him set up on wifi
calling, but that's odd, as he also sometimes has issues there. Granted,
it's way less common, but, yeah...

My point is, if you could give us a bit more info on where this setting is
you're referring to, that would be very very appreciated. I know I O S
extremely extremely well, but this is admittedly one thing I've either
failed to see, or just simply hasn't really jumped out at me.

I read an article recently that the iPhone by default opens two connections
one cellular and one WiFi and shares the traffic between them. If your cell
service is week in your house this might be the issue. I read about this on
tidbits.com in the last three months. Finding the checkbox they discussed
and turning off this feature did improve my phone performance.

When i check the speed with a app from the swedish telephone and

I do the test with their app on my Iphone and only get 17mbps

Going to their site with my mac gives me 65mbps with their built-in

Note that my mac and iphone did the test at the same place in the

I have tried moving around with my Iphone and do more testing but it

The same with my ipod touch 5th gen and my ipad mini 2.
Any ideas?

Re: iPhoto is open at startup

2016-02-03 Thread Christohper-Mark Gilland

Oh, wait a minute.

Are you saying that Photos is coming up when you boot the mac, or do you
mean it's coming up when you plug in an I O S device. Sorry, I'm way behind
on list mail. Had a virus on one of my Windows, go figure, PC's the other
day, so have been incognito for a few days. If this has been answered
effectively already, then forgive me for adding traffic.

If, however, photos is popping up when you plug an I O S device in, you can
easily shut this off by openning the photos app, (not, by the way, to be
confused with IPhoto,) and in here, find your I O S device in the table, go
to its preferences, and you can disable it from coming up automatically.

If it's coming up when you boot the mac, on the other hand, then yes, the
below original message is correct. You'd then want to look in your startup
login items.

You can also bring up the contextual menu of the app in question on the
Dock. Under options there, you can find a startup option.

Re: Enabling Apple Music in iTunes under Windows XP

2016-02-03 Thread Christohper-Mark Gilland
Alan,

You make an extremely valid point here. XP'll definitely run it, as I have it
on an XP Pro SP3 32 bit machine over here, believe it or not, however, I know
Ben like the back of my hand. He's like a brother to me, and I pretty much
know his Dell Inspiron E1505 XP machine as well in and out being how much I've
helped him over the years. I'm not sure if he actually does have the most
recent version. I'll let him answer that, but come to think of it, you might
be on to something here, as I don't think he ever updated to the latest Itunes
version.

I can! tell you this much which I know absolutely 100% beyond a doubt. He's
running XP Home edition 32 bit with NVDA's most recent non-snapshot build. I
know this as I'm the one who installed Windows for him on that machine, go
figure.

Before anyone asks, why doesn't he upgrade to Win7 at least, that's another
story. The system's about 9 years old, as he got it in 2007, so hardware specs
won't lettem.

What version of Itunes are you running on your windows XP system, I believe
one of the more recent versions of Itunes like version 12.2 or later is
required to use apple music and I'm not sure windows XP will run the required
version.

Re: Iphone slow on wifi.

2016-02-03 Thread Christohper-Mark Gilland
You know... I didn't even think about that with the 5GHC thing. My friend's
router, who I was referring to earlier, is a Linksys WRT54G router, and to
the best of my knowledge, that thing doesn't support 5GHZ, only 2. That may
explain why I'm getting better signals and speed than him, as my router
does! support 5GHZ.

Hi!
I created a 5GhZ network on my Airports and connected the phone to that and
the performance increased to 70 mbps.

So i am satisfied.

That won't make my cellular data quit working though if I'm not on wifi will
it? Nor will it make my cellular service stop working regardless if I'm on
wifi calling or not, will it?

As long as it won't do either things, and cellular'll keep working
regardless, then I'll shut it off.

Especially, if it'll save some battery.

I have connected one of my airport express via ethernet to the modem

SO far so good and the airport is set to be a nat and it just works

When i check the speed with a app from the swedish telephone and

Note that my mac and iphone did the test at the same place in the

I have tried moving around with my Iphone and do more testing but it
does not give me more than 17 or maybe 20Mbps.
The same with my ipod touch 5th gen and my ipad mini 2.
 Any ideas?

Text and iMessage Delays Between Mac and iPhone

Good day list,
Would there be any way to minimize delaying of text message receiving
(including iMessages), between my Mac and iPhone5?
If I get text or iMessages, it's usually the phone will get them first, then
either some minutes, or possibly, hours later, the Mac gets them.
I'm running the latest public OS X and latest public IOS available.

That program scans in the cloud and recognizes in the cloud. And it costs more
than fine raider. If you don't mind relying on the Internet, I guess it's OK.
The learning curve is probably less. But I don't care for the whole cloud

Re: Enabling Apple Music in iTunes under Windows XP

2016-02-03 Thread Ben J. Bloomgren
I checked for updates last night, and it said that it's on the most recent
version, which is 12.1.3.

Yes, they're signed in and authorized. I noticed that the songs that I had
locally in that library are now part of my My Music section under Apple Music.
I'll have to try it again. Thank you, Chris and Alan, for the recommendations.

  Alan,

You make an extremely valid point here. XP'll definitely run it, as I have
it on an XP Pro SP3 32 bit machine over here, believe it or not, however, I
know Ben like the back of my hand. He's like a brother to me, and I pretty
much know his Dell Inspiron E1505 XP machine as well in and out being how much
I've helped him over the years.

  Chris.

What version of Itunes are you running on your windows XP system, I believe
one of the more recent versions of Itunes like version 12.2 or later is
required to use apple music and I'm not sure windows XP will run the required
version.

  Hi all,

I was playing with iTunes over here on this old PC I've got here. I
haven't ever enabled Apple Music there, but I'd like to do so. I found an Apple

see no such thing. And yes, I have looked in every tab under there. What do you
recommend that I do?

  Thanks,

Windows 10 Push Goes Up Another Notch

2016-02-03 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
A quick heads-up for Windows users (in VMs or on physical hardware): Windows 10
is now being pushed as a “Recommended” update that is checked by default.

If you don’t want it, and if it’s not too late, you can uncheck the recommended
update in question. Once installed you download about 3 GB of foistware, and
the installation process starts automatically. If you get to that stage, and
still don’t want it, then close the window of the installer.

Apple are no saints when it comes to this sort of thing, for sure, but this
aspect of Microsoft’s latest direction is without doubt the most obnoxious and
anti-consumer I can think of. I don’t want Win10 and never will because of the
clear disregard it has for privacy. JMO, but Apple’s OS upgrades are merely
annoying by comparison.
