Original message:

I recently joined this group and would like to learn more about using
the Mac and its accessibility. I am considering buying a Mac, and have
been exploring some different models. I would appreciate any input
anyone may have before I buy one.

My main purposes right now for using the mac would be for learning how
the OS works, using web browsing, email, word processing, listening to
audio files, and trying some audio editing. I'd also like to try Apple
Script, Python, and maybe the new Swift programming language. Does
VoiceOver work well in the terminal?

I would also like to have the option to run Windows as a virtual
machine, and am considering whether to get 8 GB of RAM or go with 4.

Recently when working on my resume, I found it helpful that my Windows
screen reader was able to tell me the horizontal and vertical position
of the cursor so that I could tell how far down on the page the text
was, and make sure text was lined up horizontally. Does VoiceOver offer
this kind of feedback in either Pages or Microsoft Office?

I'm mainly considering the Mac Mini, Macbook Air, or Macbook. From
reading Apple's OS X requirements, many 2012 or newer models of the Mac
Mini are supported. If I go with a Macbook Air or Macbook, I may go for
a newer machine to maximize its battery life since the battery isn't
easily replaceable. Would I be ok with getting a Mac Mini from 2012 or
newer if I decide to go with one of those, instead of buying the latest
model, or are there any drawbacks from an accessibility standpoint?

How valuable is it to have a numeric pad? I understand VoiceOver has a
numpad commander that can be used to assign keyboard commands. Would it
be worth considering an external Apple keyboard with a numeric pad if I
buy a laptop without one? How about a trackpad, if I choose a Mac Mini
without one built in?

One of the things I am excited about is access to the recovery software,
and being able to easily create and run Mac OS from an external hard
drive or flash drive for troubleshooting or as a second system for
experimenting. Can I use an existing external hard drive and
repartition it so that I have a partition for backup file storage and a
second partition to install OS X, or would it be better to have OS X as
the only thing on the external drive? I recall reading that when
choosing a startup OS by holding the option key at startup that there is
no speech. Are there other screens like this to be aware of?

Thanks for any ideas.

If it's a parallel to USB adapter, then it won't appear as a serial port but
as a parallel printer port. I don't know what the device names are under OS X,
but there may be a device node in /dev. System log files may show whether the
device is recognized.

If it is recognized, you're in luck. Otherwise, I can think of two options:

1. Find a parallel to USB adapter that OS X does recognize or for which there
is a driver. This has nothing to do with the embosser itself.

2. Configure the embosser for serial output, and connect a serial to USB
adapter that OS X can recognize. I've jused a Juliet embosser in the past
(under Linux, not OS X). It had both serial and parallel ports and you could
switch between them with configuration commands issued via the key pad.

Hi, Mark. Happy New Year. It seems to have mysteriously resolved itself, thanks

random letter echo changes to word echo, and auto correct seems extra insistent

Re: apple watch weirdness with bluetooth

2016-01-01 Thread Ricardo Walker
Yup,

Exactly. I called Apple yesterday, and this is indeed not a bug. Its a
limitation caused by how they route calls. Basically, Your watch is already
being treated as a bluetooth speaker/mic. So,The call is being defaulted to the
watch speaker. I didn’t realize that calls were being relayed via bluetooth. I
had assumed it was via wifi similar to hand off like when placing/receiving
calls via a mac or iPad for example.

In my opinion, its quite an inconvenience.

Long story short, you want to take calls privately via your apple watch via bt
headset? Not happening.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-01 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Jim, with your talk of the blizzard you experienced, you've hit on exactly
why many of us believe there should be an FM radio in every smartphone.
Disasters. In an earthquake, major storm, or sadly even in a terror attack,
it's too easy for infrastructure to be overloaded or damaged. There was a
serious earthquake here five years ago that resulted in hundreds of lives lost.
Many cell sites were damaged, and those that weren't suffered huge congestion
when everyone tried to call and text at the same time. Power was out for a long
time for many people, so they had no Internet at work or home. Mobile data
can't be trusted at times like this. The good old ham radio operators were a
huge help during this time.
It's also true that conventional radio transmitters may fail too, but chances
are that somewhere, there'll be a station that's able to stay on the air and
give advice and other emergency information.
Like others in this thread, my understanding is also that just like the
numerous Android phones where this feature is enabled, there is an FM radio in
the iPhone that hasn't been enabled. Enabling it can't do any harm, and it
could literally be a life saver at critical times.

windows7 under bootcamp

2016-01-01 Thread jeff `greene
Hi, Ok starting just yesterday I'm seeing some strange behavior in
windows 7 under bootcamp. My keystrokes on the keyboard seem to be
delayed, I.E. I hit a key and there is a longer delay than normal. A
couple of programs like Piraform C-Cleaner launch funny and i can't
navigate the screen. So, since microsoft keeps harping at me to update
to windows 10 I was thinking that may solve my problems. I just had
some questions.1 Do you have to update the apple bootcamp drivers or
is it done automatically?
2 Will my screen reader work after the update, or how about win10's narrator?
If anybody on the list has done this upgrade any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

Jonathan!
I still have my n82 phone that has radio and Icould use that in an emergency
but it seems counterproductive to have a chip in a phone and not have access to
it. I've lived where power is out, and there is no access to services and
radio is always reassuring during those times.
I can only hope that one day the iPhone will activate that built-in chip if it
is indeed there.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-01 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Is it just a matter of activating the FM chip, though? I thought I remember
reading somewhere that part of the problem was getting an antenna that could be
shared among all the radio frequencies. Some phones were using the headphone
socket to provide the radio with an aerial, and that of course makes for some
unseemly requirements on listening.

And let’s not forget that this is Apple. Between scratching the itch of the
telcos upon whose generosity their success is highly conditioned, the “User
experience” of listening to FM, and—oh, I don’t know—filling their own pockets
on the ill-gotten gains of app sales, is it really that much of a wonder, even
if they could get it working, that they’d be reluctant to do so?

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-01 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Pardon me for chiming in here but, I found the end of your message kinda
amusing.

you wrote "Between scratching the itch of the telcos upon whose generosity
their success is highly conditioned…” Not for nothing, that doesn’t make much
sense. Especially when talking about the Samsung Galaxy lineup, and the iPhone.
Telcos have their backs against the wall more than ever before when it comes to
dealing with Hero handsets like those I mention. Do you recall how many people
flocked to At&T in the U.S., and other carriers who had exclusive rights to
sell the iPhone? If you recall, Verizon turned down Apple because they wanted
to stick their logos all over the phone, and Apple refused. People leave
carriers to get phones, no one dumps their phone just to switch carriers. So,
in a nutshell, the situation is the exact opposite of what you wrote. Many
carriers are looking for the generosity from Apple and Samsung to officially
support their networks and include the bands that they operate on their radio
chipsets.

For example, ask T-mobile how they did when Apple finally supported their ban,
and the phone was officially carried by T-mobile. *Shrug*. I have no issues
with cynicism, I am actually a fan. but lets come back to earth a bit here. lol.

And ill-gotten gains from the app store? lol. Ok. Have you noticed that most
developers put apps out on the IOS platform before Android, Windows phone, and
others? And, they usually spend the time and resources to create better apps on
IOS? I don’t think FB, Twitter, etc would be doing that because they were
losing on the investment. Just saying.

Not trying to be snarky here, I just wanted to point out some things. I enjoy
reading your posts, and I find you to be a wealth of knowledge on a diverse
range of topics.

Happy New Year.

I desperetly need help with software

2016-01-01 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Guys,

Would anyone happen to have the mac installer for the Olympus Sanority
software? Do not worry about piracy. I do absolutely *not!* want your serial
number! Under no circumstances whatsoever do I want you sending that to me! I
already have a completely legal license key which I bought. All that I need is
the installer itself. Before anyone asks, no. The software is not digital
voice recorder model specific. I know this, as a friend of mine has the
software installed, and they have about 3 different recorderws all of which are
different models. One's a DM-420, one was a DS50, and the other is a DM-620.
So for him, all three work fabulously with the same exact version of the
Sanority software.

I just can't for the life of me seem to find my CD rom with the software on it.
I thought you could download it from the Olympus America web site, but
apparently not. At least if you can, I'm having a hell of a time finding it.

Again, absolutely, I cannot stress enough, I do absolutely not! need nor want,
a serial number to go with it. I just need someone who can either get me the
installer itself and either Sendspace, or better yet, Dropbox it to me, or just
zip up an entire Sanority CD that came with one of the recorders, and I'll just
grab the software from the zip file. Either/or. Also, a DMG image would be
just fine, if you'd rather do it that way. I don't have a preference.

Again, I'd not normally ask this, but I have practically looked everywhere for
my disc. It must have gotten lost in my last move, and it's not like I'm
asking for a crack or the like. As I said, I already have a key, and trust me.
I won't get very far without it, as even with the free non-Pro version, you
have to have a key in order for it to even install to start with. So, without
you sending me a serial, there really wouldn't be much I could do with it
anyway.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Chris.

Re: discovered a movie rental with audible narration

2016-01-01 Thread Alex Hall
Currently, the only way I know to do this is via an Apple TV with the latest
tvOS. I've emailed Apple about this, and they say they're working on the
problem. However, there's not yet a solution. Some movies say they have
description right in the title, but now we're seeing some that have
descriptions without indicating that at all. Here's hoping this gets fixed
soon!

Thank you for clarifying. I and my partner are seriously considering
purchasing an Apple TV. We are tired of TV ads!
As I understand it you can stream movies and shows from Netflex and,
learnt today, from Apple too? What else can you do with it? I have
Comcast TV with basic cable via the mobile home park.. Luckily our TV
set has an USB port. I'm hoping it is as easy as hooking it up to the
TV screen, getting on YFi, and getting it started. What excites me is
Voiceover is on it.
Looking forward to your answers and answers about the audio description.

Re: discovered a movie rental with audible narration

2016-01-01 Thread Phil Halton
The AppleTV connects to your TV via an HDMI cable, not a USB cable. If you have
an old TV that doesn't have HDMI, you gonna have a problem. There may be
adapters but I don't think there are. You'll need a new TV that has one or more
HDMI ports.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-01 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Ricardo,

Interesting thoughts.

To be honest, I get the impression that the US has yet to get the full benefits
of competition enjoyed by most of the rest of the world, who have had GSM all
this time, and are now starting to realise what we now take for granted: that
buying an unlocked phone is a long-term investment that pays off when you can
switch to any carrier, and that the prices you pay for the phone are actually
representative of their true value and not the discounted price carriers use to
justify locking you to their networks. Before iPhone, and in a future world of
low-price, low-margin smartphones, where Apple cannot enforce its interests on
consumers by choosing its partners and hardware and software specifications and
bringing with them the unwelcome consequences of lock-in, and every carrier
works in every phone using GSM, there is at least the possibility for consumers
to truly vote with their wallets. Unfortunately, just as with DRM in music,
Apple had to sell out to the US carriers in order to grow adoption, and I think
Apple has a way to go before being truly free of them. Their new upgrade
programme and AppleSIM are a start, as is Google’s Project Fi, but as long as
they’re dependent on deals with carriers just to sell their phones at
reasonable prices and make basic phone functions work (4G, tethering) and they
continue to approve carriers individually rather than just following standards
and giving people what they pay for (what am I buying an “unlocked” phone for
again?) there will always be a market for cheaper phones that cost so little
you don’t need a carrier to subsidise them, or premium phones with less
restrictive software features that are not locked to carriers. And the funny
thing is, we’re already here. The draw of Samsung and Apple is there, but
their grip on the consumer only lasts while they can get away with exerting
that kind of control. My carrier in the UK couldn’t support the iPhone
correctly without selling iPhones themselves; I temporarily moved to O2 to get
the iPhone (and moved back to the VNO when they started selling iPhones and I
could use 4G and tethering). And remember, all using GSM. And going in the
other direction, Fi or AppleSIM or whatever, would only expose us to the
potential misdeeds of our favourite vendors, now unconstrained by the
competition offered by carriers, even as they support every band in the world
on their flagship phones, to the potential benefit of consumers, but also
potentially to the detriment of their wallets. You may think Apple can do no
wrong, and I hope you’re right, but it worries me.

So yes, my comment was flamboyant, but it’s not wrong. Apple still puts
carriers before consumers, sadly. And not for nothing, either. :)

On the App Store, which I agree is a more pleasant and sustainable experience
for iOS developers, I simply meant that Apple makes money now from streaming
app developers and helps the carriers by not using its FM chip. Having said
this, I also believe Apple needs to recognise that developer interest will
switch to the platform that is most rewarding, and both Google and Microsoft
are desperately rolling out the red carpet to make that happen. As soon as
alternatives become sufficiently tolerable and guarantee a decent income, you
can be sure that the majority will win again. This is simple economics, of
course. All the vendors you mentioned, plus Apple and Microsoft, are on the
Play Store, for instance. You need to be there, because that’s where everybody
is. I hope that Apple realises that developers are important, just as
Microsoft did. I would hate to see iOS go the way of the Mac, and become just
another underserved niche.

A happy new year to you too. :)

RE: Choosing a Mac, getting started

2016-01-01 Thread Simon Fogarty
The 2012 mac mini can allow you the user to update ram to 16GB max where as the
newer mac mini models I believe are only upgradable by the factory with a
custom design.
This is the same for all mac notebooks unless you pay more for the custom
builds they are all released with fearly lowish specs, still very useable
The 13” mac book pro with optical drive can have harddrive and ram updated but
the individual if you have the knowledge of how to do it.

The newer models don’t have that ability.

Terminal is useable with Voiceover although feedback isn’t great but it is
useable.
I use it all the time to run installation and diagnostic commands.

Running mac OSx versions from external drives or USB devices is great but My
personal recommendation is a ssd drive with thunderbolt or usb 3.1 especially
if running VM from the externals.

I have these different setups for reasons of probem solving or recovery of data
from machiens having issues.

For a office suite to be used with Voiceover
For get MS Office, as it’s not friendly but iWorks is great. Very useable
In saying that I haven’t used office 2016 on the mac so not sure if it’s
accessibility has gotten better or not.

I use a mac book air late 2013, 11” with upgraded processor, 8gb ram and a
512gb ssd so custom build by apple.

And I can’t fault it.

I use it for work and personal use, including VM Fusion with up to 4 different
vm
S running at once, or bootcamp running windows 10 with VM workstation running
different vms’ for all kinds of reasons.
With these things you can do awesome things all you can do is find the machine
you want and then expand on the accessories. Hope this helps.

John

Subject: windows7 under bootcamp

Hi, Ok starting just yesterday I'm seeing some strange behavior in windows 7
under bootcamp. My keystrokes on the keyboard seem to be delayed, I.E. I hit a
key and there is a longer delay than normal. A couple of programs like Piraform
C-Cleaner launch funny and i can't navigate the screen. So, since microsoft
keeps harping at me to update to windows 10 I was thinking that may solve my
problems. I just had some questions.1 Do you have to update the apple bootcamp
drivers or is it done automatically?
2 Will my screen reader work after the update, or how about win10's narrator?
If anybody on the list has done this upgrade any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

RE: Braille displays with VMware

2016-01-01 Thread Simon Fogarty
With USB under VM fusion if that is what you are using, you can go into what
from Memory is the virtual machine menu and the removable drives option will l
/ should allow you to change the device from the host to the guest.

I know it works with USB Flash memory drives and can only assume it wil with
your braille device.

Good luck.

Yes I could connect to USB. Maybe that is what I will need to do.
Ahh, all those wires and cables everywhere! (smiles)
