Did you create a Trillian account? You can't add accounts until you perform
this step.

Yep, it appears that we won’t be able to use Facebook Chat from within the
Messages App as XMPP support is being deprecated. I finally removed my

most accessible experience I’ve ever found for chatting with Facebook
 friends, on any platform.

Re: does a mac need both VM Ware and bootcamp to run windows

2015-12-28 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi Matt,

For me, the reason I run fusion is to use k1000.

I do have abby fine reader and docuscan on my mac as well, but nothing compares
to k1000 for quality of recognition and ease of use from one peice of software.

If you could give hints and/or tips for using fine reader to get good results,
that’d be great! I am also trying to learn how to place bookmarks in a
document, with whatever app works, so that I can access different parts of the
document easily and with no fuss. I am talking about text books and reference
works here. For example, I know that pages has the ability to place bookmarks,
and so does i text express, but I have never been able to get them to work
reliably.

thanks!
Caitlyn

Re: Router recomendations?

2015-12-28 Thread Scott Granados
Wow, I would have thought the Apple Airport Extreme would have more than
handled that.

I’d say DLink DIR-895, Netgear Nighthawk X8 8500 MikroTik or some of the newer
Asus models. Nether and DLink I have hands on experience with.

On the professional side you might look at some of the Ubiquiti stuff like
their air routers and if you need high end wireless for low money their Unifi
access points are quite good.

Apple Watch, do sometimes the screens fail to update for others?

2015-12-28 Thread Scott Granados
Hi,

Another thing I’m noticing as a new Apple watch user. When you two finger
swipe up through the various activities and views even if you swipe slowly and
allow the screen to redraw do you sometimes find that nothing updates? Also, I
find in other places a similar thing where changes don’t appear to the display.
Anyone else notice this? I’m running the latest Watch OS 2.1.

Thanks
Scott

RE: Apple Watch question, how to change or delete the Cuptertino

2015-12-28 Thread george b
Get on the clock face with your time and such
Now push the crown button once and you are in the list of apps etc.. it should
say clock

Now flick with one finger right to left and it should say world clock and
dubble tap on this
Now set the info to your east cost time, if it is the correct time already then
just change the name from couperteinol to what you wish.

The time changes through your phone so you should have the correct time just
you need to change the name

I don’t have a time and date option on the watch app. I have a clock but
nothing in there indicates the cities other than city abbreviations.

Must be doing something wrong on my side.

wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hello everyone,

I’m trying to get wifi calling to work on my Apple watch and having no luck. It
works just fine on my Macbook, Mac mini, and iPad but not on the watch.

Has anyone else been able to get this to work? Especially those on the T-mobile
network.

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes.

There is definitely some lag. I’ve realized I have to swipe through certain
screens slower than I would wish.

Re: Apple Watch, do sometimes the screens fail to update for others?

2015-12-28 Thread Scott Granados
That’s probably the key to swipe through slowly in places. Seems like it could
use a slight bit more processing power which we’ll probably see in the next
release. Still though it’s damn cool and works well, that’s only a minor issue.

Re: Apple Watch question, how to change or delete the Cuptertino

2015-12-28 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I think this has to do with the complication setup.

from the main clock face of your watch, press down hard, and you will be on the
page to select your watch face. By default, I believe you are on the module
clock face. 1 finger swipe from left to right navigates through the clock
faces. swipe down with with 1 finger to customize and double tap. where you
have the complication for the world clock, select your current timezone. Keep
in mind, if you want more option here, open the clock app on your iPhone.
select the world clock tab, and you can erase Cupertino altogether, or add
different cities that will then show up when you are customizing your
complications for your clock faces.

Re: wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Ricardo Walker
So, I turned on wifi calling on my iPhone, and have enabled other devices to
use wifi calling. In the watch app, I have wifi calling enabled as well. So I
turn off my phone, and attempt to make a call via my watch. The call fails
every time. Same when making a call to my cell number. my iPad rings, my Mac
rings, but the watch stays silent. The watch does indeed have a wifi
connection, I double checked that.

I have notice on my iPhone under settings/phone/calls on other devices, my
apple watch does not show up in this list.

Re: wifi calling on Apple Watch

2015-12-28 Thread Brent Harding
I think this is another one of those features that has to be supported by
the carrier. When I first got my watch, Sprint did not have it, so if the
phone was on Wifi calling, the watch would simply not ring at all. If I was
away and the phone was on cellular, the watch did ring. Now that Sprint
enabled this feature, it works on both. I thought this phone calling through
the watch was over bluetooth, but I guess it is a direct connection to the
carrier you have.

Yup,

Exactly. In the United States, T-mobile, Sprint and AT&T now support wifi
calling. Thats why I’m confused that it works on all my other apple devices but
not the watch.

Thanks.

Hi!
Ok, sounds like i have problems with my internet connection then.
However i have had mistakes about it so i have changed to a 100 mbit cable
instead.
It was a bit hard to believe one person on a nother list mentioning that
airport extreme was so bad.

Re: Router recomendations?

2015-12-28 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Now when answering your message its a dsl modem with router built-in.
I have that as a nat and use the airport extreme as a bridge.
Maybe i should try to reverse the setting so that my modem is a bridge and my
airport is a nat.
But how will i go with my other airport base stations i have?
I have two airport express.
Do i have to set them up to or will they automatically join the network?
Also thanks for your encouragement to do some testing through all options.
One question though.
I have a macbook which does not use an ethernet port.
If i buy a thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor would this in any case decrease the
speed?
Thanks.

Best configuration for new mac?

2015-12-28 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.
I am scanning Apple's refurb shop for a new mini. I use Fusion in Windows 7
or 10 with Window-eyes most of my work day. Question: Am I better off
getting a 2.7gh processor with a fusion drive and 16 gig of memory, or a
2.3gh processor, 16 gig of memory and an SD drive?
Minis only seem to come in dual core. Is there a large spped jump on a
macbook Pro with a quadcore processor whereyou can devote two cores to mac
and Windows?
Thanks for any advice.
Bill

Re: Best configuration for new mac?

2015-12-28 Thread jeff `greene
Hi Bill,
I'd always go for an SSD drive, they make an amazing difference. The
experts say there's not a lot of difference between dual and quad core
processors. The only time a big difference shows up is if you use
something advanced like photoshop that can use multiple processor
threads. There is more and more software that can take advantage of
multiple processor threads, but I've never really noticed much of a
difference. For example, I have a 2012 quad-core macbook pro that I
run windows 7 on, and an Asus 13.3-inch ultrabook that runs a dual
core processor. The macbook pro is 2.3ghz up to 3.3ghz, the Asus is
2.8ghz up to 3.5ghz. And running System Access from serotek as my
speach program I don't notice much difference.
Hope this helps! Jeff

RE: Best configuration for new mac?

2015-12-28 Thread Bill Holton
thanks. So it looks like after memory, priorities are SSD, Processor speed,
then number of cores. I thought devoting two cores to windows and two to Mac
would make each run faster, but apparently that is not your experience?

Hi Bill,
I'd always go for an SSD drive, they make an amazing difference. The
experts say there's not a lot of difference between dual and quad core

2015-12-28 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
jeff `greene wrote:
> I'd always go for an SSD drive, they make an amazing difference.

Indeed they do, and the prices are improving.

My Macbook Pro isn't much faster in terms of clock speed than my old laptop.
(Granted, the CPU is 6 years newer or thereabouts, so it's definitely faster.)
However, I would attribute most of the performance difference between the two
machines to the SSD, which is extraordinarily fast on the recent MacBook Pro
models.

The older laptop is running Linux, so the operating systems are at least
somewhat similar, but it's the hard drive that really slows down this machine
(I'm using it to write this message).

Buy an SSD if you can. If you can't afford one, or if you need more storage,
there are hybrid drives that contain a small SSD for fast storage and a slow,
conventional hard disk that provides storage of much higher capacity. The
drive automatically moves frequently accessed data to the flash storage for
rapid access. It isn't as good as an SSD, but it's still better than a
traditional hard drive.

2015-12-28 Thread Bill Holton
I currently have a 128 gig external SSD that uses a thunderbolt connection. I
have el Cap installed onto the drive, and my VM locdated there, too. Will an
internal SSD give me much more speed?

Also, I thought this was something to do with VM Fusion, but it also happens
when I am not in my virtual machine. Every so often I will get the VM Fusion
busy, busy message. If I am just running Safari, Safari busy, busy. I did
notice that when this happens a few of the process go to 200%. One of them is
LSD, easy to remember, I cannot remember the other one right now. Is this
something I can diagnose and fix? Thanks.

Re: Getting to the dock

2015-12-28 Thread Grant
Hi George,

The VO KEYS are CONTROL+OPTION, and/or CAPS LOCK if you’re running El Capitan.
So writing VO D is likely an abbreviation, meaning she is pressing D while
holding down her VoiceOver modifier keys.

As for the original question, it’s difficult to say what may be going on here.
What happens if you press VO+K to turn on keyboard help, then press VO+D to
hear the description of the command?

Cheers,

Grant

Re: Best configuration for new mac?

2015-12-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I really believe that multicore performance is a good thing to have when doing
virtualisation. No two ways around it: the latest Mac Mini is a downgrade from
its predecessor, because of the dual-core processors. Sure, they’re newer
family chips, but they are still slower. Worse yet, RAM is not upgradable, and
storage is not upgradable without substantial (and very careful) disassembly.
I have no doubt that Apple are, if not intentionally doing it, at least glad
that the Mini will no longer threaten their Mac Pros or iMacs, both of which
now present alternative options. The Mac Mini is such an attractive machine,
and I too have been recently eyeing them up hungrily for their lovely SSD
performance and small form factor, but I just can’t bring myself to buy a
downgraded machine for any purpose other than the one for which my current
dual-core Mini is serving (a simple caching server). Indeed, my previous 2010
Mini could be upgraded `if I chose: both RAM and SSD would bring it up to par
with the best Mac Mini, if you discount the slight clock speed boost (2.6 to
3.0), the change in processor family and the addition of an optical drive. Of
course, as you said, you could also investigate quad-core options in laptops as
well, and get out of the dual-core league entirely. But if you must buy a
Mini, get a maximally configured Mini, so as to save long-term on your
investment: 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM, 3.0 GHz I7 dual-core. This configuration will
let you down a bit in the virtualisation department, but will make up for it in
general use.

Re: Router recomendations?

2015-12-28 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Anders,

Long message ahead. I have replied inline for clarity.

On 28 Dec 2015, at 20:46, Anders Holmberg wrote:

Yeah, if you can. Lets AirPort handle your public IP address, NAT, port
forwarding, and all that. However, maybe not the best option if your DSL modem
is actually a better router because it handles your DSL connection at full
frame sizes, without PPPoE overhead. In my experience though, most ISP routers
are horribly outperformed by hardware you get yourself, including AirPort. It
may even not be possible, for example PPPoA generally cannot be bridged without
special hardware, forcing you to use your “Modem” as your NAT router. You will
need to investigate your options. If you don’t mind, buy another modem; I
recommend Draytek v130. This will in fact bridge PPPoA, and pass PPP directly
through to AirPort as PPPoE. Now put your username/password into AirPort, and
get a very nice, reliable setup, entirely controlled by AirPort. This is a
great way to turn any legacy DSL connection into Ethernet, and make AirPort
work with any connection type. These babies even support baby jumbo, so if you
ever get an alternative router to AirPort that knows how to handle large
packets, it need only support an Ethernet port to give you the full capacity of
your DSL/VDSL connection. I use one now; they’re very sweet.

> But how will i go with my other airport base stations i have?
> I have two airport express.
> Do i have to set them up to or will they automatically join the network?

Tell them to “Join” your existing network. You can do this during the initial
setup process; zap them with AirPort Utility to factory settings and you’ll be
asked how to configure them. “Joining” an AirPort network will see your
Express configured as a WDS replicator. You can then use the Ethernet ports on
your Express to attach devices to your network, in addition of course to using
it as a wireless extender and, optionally, AirPlay receiver and print server.
Being able to wirelessly connect ethernet-equipped devices to your network is
way cool. :)

There is an important catch I think you should understand, though. Your
wireless devices connected by way of the receiver are only capable of “N”
speeds. Moreover, only half of “N” speeds, theoretically. Your bandwidth is
chopped into half because the signal is now taking two hops, and the Express is
not yet an AC-capable device. A hidden preference, accessible only with the
older AirPort Utility 5.6 available for Windows, can fix it so wireless clients
do not associate with your Express devices, but this would of course render
them rather useless as wireless extenders; they will then only be Ethernet
extenders. If you are finding that your speeds are particularly poor because
of your Express extenders, and you really need your extenders to get the
desired coverage, and you have no other means to wire your AirPort units
together (Ethernet, HomePlug, etc), and perhaps because they are often
providing the best signal at any given time, then I can only suggest you tell
your Extreme to broadcast separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, and connect
only your most critical high-throughput devices to the Extreme on 5 GHz,
leaving the remainder behind on 2.4 GHz at “N” speeds, extended by your AirPort
Express, and ensuring that your speed-critical devices are never dragged down
to “N” speeds. It’s either that, or get more AirPort Extremes as extenders to
push out your AC network.

> I have a macbook which does not use an ethernet port.
> If i buy a thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor would this in any case decrease
> the speed?

The Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor is not as high-performance as one might
hope, but it will, in most cases, smash the performance of any wireless
networks, including AC networks. It’s always preferable to wireless just for
reliability. AC is supposed to be able to reach close to gigabit speed, but it
is a rare thing indeed, if for no other reason than that most devices don’t
have the radios for it.

You can configure wired and wireless connections on the same Mac. OS X uses
the correct one. Plug in when you can.

There were a few reports of specific brands of modems not negotiating the
correct speed with AirPort. These should be very rare and are abnormal.
AirPort Extreme has a gigabit port on the outside, and gigabit ports on the
inside. Cable should not give you any trouble. I can confirm that you should
get at least 200 Mb/s.

Re: Odd Navigation Results with Web Page under OS X 10.10.5

2015-12-28 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you, Sabahattin, for your thoughtful reply. I checked and
unchecked the "Group items within" checkbox under the "VoiceOver
Utility -> Web -> Navigation -> Navigating Web Tables" item, and the
little table was still locked. That is, pressing "VO-left" and
"VO-right" produced no results. As I said, pressing the "Tab" key
gave access to all sorts of links and other form controls. I am going
to subscribe to your theory of the misbehaving table and hope that
when I upgrade to El Capitan, something I am reluctant to do right
now, that the problem will go away. I may try updating to the latest
version of Safari; I am currently running Version 8.0.8. I should add
something that you already probably have guessed: the page can be
easily navigated under iOS 9.2. I am easily resisting the temptation
to turn my Mac into a Windows machine to test this page because I am a
new user and because this page is the only one I have found that
behaves in this peculiar way.

having issues adding short cut key

2015-12-28 Thread Raymond Foret Jr
When I try to add a short cut for Add Sender to Contacts, it doesn't seem to
work. Here's what I'm doing.

1. Go in to Mail menus and examine how "Add Sender to Contacts" is written
exatly.

2. Open System preferences.

3. Click on Keyboard and then click on Short cuts.
4. Go down to the apps short cuts table item.

5. Click add.

6. Now, choose the mail app.

8. Next, I type in "Add Sender to Contacts" without the quotes and exactly as
shown.

9. Now, I VO+right to where I press the key combination I want to use, say for
example Shift+Command+a.
10. Next, I click add. No matter what, though, I can't seem to check it.

Any advice?

Running 10.11.2

Re: messages app not connecting to Facebook anymore.

2015-12-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
No you can still use Trillian to connect to Facebook. Try pressing
command+slash. That should bring up the contacts window. If not, don't know
what to tell you, but it works for me just fine.

have you tried using Trillian for Facebook? It's free and very accessible.

Trillian Has Broken Accessibility

2015-12-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey guys. I just updated Trillian and I found a big surprise. Accessibility is
totally broken. Whenever I arrow up or down in the contact list, all Voiceover
says is blank selected. How nice. I'm thinking of rolling back to an earlier
version that I've backed up to time machine but my only problem with that is it
will update automatically to this inaccessible version. My question to you all
is after I do this, can I turn off automatic updates for certain apps or do I
have to choose if things update automatically or not? Thanks.
