Re: time-machine problem

2015-11-27 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Time Machine should work with a suitably configured NAS with a recent version
of netatalk running. It is not my preferred route—I’d much rather access the
NAS directly over the network and have the NAS performing snapshots either to a
RAID or an external cloud storage service—but it should work just fine.

My advice is to keep with a wired network if you wish to use Time Machine.
Depending on the nature and robustness of your wireless network, it might
simply be that you are regularly corrupting your sparse disk images by being
disconnected all the time. I’m still not entirely sure why Apple choose the
sparse disk image format for network backups which are presumably attractive
precisely because they are often free of wires, except that it might be
convenient for the storage of all backup metadata. It’s not at all robust
though, so you need to ensure you have good connectivity to the NAS. Of
course, buying an Apple NAS that doubles as a wireless access point may or may
not help with your particular network.

If you still wish to use wireless but don’t have the means to set up backups on
the NAS itself, then check whether or not Arq from Haystack Software supports
the protocols or cloud storage providers that your NAS has. If, for example,
your NAS has a built-in SFTP server, then you could use that to more reliably
store hourly backups without continually needing to refresh your backup
history. The downside to this approach is that the backups are then only
accessible with a copy of Arq installed on a Mac and an encryption password.

Re: The Mac and Braille

2015-11-27 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
You can’t compare nvda with cobra.
Cobra is meant to be used with a braille display and nvda is meant to use with
a speech synthesizer.
Nvda has braille support and of course you can use that to read mail and write
text with but you never gonna use that with more advanced features of windows.
Cobra is a very expensive screenreader.
I don’t know the price but i can look it up.

2015-11-27 Thread Alex Hall
Braille Blaster is written in Java, which makes sense for cross-platform
compatibility. However, I don't know how--or if--one can work with Java to make
a Mac project in Xcode. Plus, their site claims that 10.9.3 is the most
recently tested OS X version, and Braille Blaster didn't work on it. Clearly,
they've not tested for the Mac in a couple years.

As much as it pains me to admit it JAWS probs has the best braille support

that would do what I wanted, but I discovered that pressing a router key above

I’ve also found that the display shows the first line of a page when it gets to

I’m working with a Braillino, so it may be different on other displays.

Me: How can such snapshots be achieved? Can you point me to a source of
knowledge on this one? Can your mac be restored from such snapshots? I
already take copies of entire system with Superduper: is this what you mean?
Can a restoration after a possible disaster be achieved from Superduper image?

Me: You mention a NAS drive. I have such a NAS device, WDMycloud by Western
Digital to which I bakcup using Time Machine but it's intersting that I often
get asked to perform a full backup to improve reliability, which would confirm
what you have explained about the interrupted wireless signal. Would you also
suggest backing up to a thunderbolt drive? Would it be more reliable?
If you can think off hand without wishing to waste your time, where I could
learn more about this subject, I'd appreciate some pointers.

Best wishes

Andrew

Big Wifi Problem with macbook air

2015-11-27 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List, I wanted to use the migration assistant to move stuff from one mac
to another, but I have recently changed wifi networks and the assistant started
searching my old network, instead of my new one. So I went into network
preferences, to try and delete the old network, by hitting delete service while
focussed on my old network and then activating apply. I obviously did something
very wrong, because, now no wifi networks are showing up under wifi in status
menus, which says wifi not configuered, and network preferences is just showing
weird services like thunderbolt interface and Iphone usb, but no wifi networks.
Is this fixable, or can I never use wifi again on my air? I would be grateful
for any advice you can give me.

Many Thanks, Lee

Sounds like you might have deleted the wifi service. Just re-add it in
that same area.

If that doesn't work, then under location, try creating a new location,
instead of using automatic, and see if that helps.

I highly doubt you've broken your wifi.

Re: ipad full time?

2015-11-27 Thread erik burggraaf
No, I love my mac. I'll be hartbroken when it dies. It's just that between
my ipod and my android, there's really nothing short of the convenience of
having done things a certain way for years to justify a new macbook. Which is
pretty slim justification if you think about it.

I've got a cloud storage that I built myself which can support up to 24 tb of
files. All of my CD'as are on drive now and packed away in boxes because I
have no room to display them. I can email and browse on both of my mobiles. I
can torrent on my droid. I haven't OCR'ed on my mac for about two years now
because it's so easy on the ipod, and with knfb now on droid, I've got a good
solution there too. Microsoft is putting most of it's accessibility efforts
into office mobile right now, and it shows. Add in the microsoft unified
codebase, and I'm actually excited about the possibilities for word processing
on mobile devices. Then there are highly robust databasing apps for mobile.
Plus with the array of accessories available such as scanning stands, bar code
readers, and daily living kit. Add in the intergration of audiobook and music
delivery services and I can honestly say I haven't even missed my mp3 player in
a year and a half though I still carry it with me for some reason.

I'll miss audio editing as right now there's no way to get my edirol m16DX to
interface with either a droid or an I device that I know of. For that reason,
I'm hoping my mac hangs around a couple of ears until I come up with something
I'm happy with for mid range field recording and studio work. Again, It's been
a couple of years since I've really had my hand in there anyway, I just want
the option since I have all the equipment anyhow.
I'll also miss mess, since mess for droid hasn't really gotten the attention
I'd like to see put into it. I waited for 8 years to have something like mess
for mac and now that I can play my classic apple IIe games I'll be sad to let
that go. I do have an accessible frotz for android though, so I can still
access text adventures.

If my mac dies, I'll want one of two great portable keyboards that are on the
market right now. Or, if I decide to go tablet for some reason then I wouldn't
be without a keyboard foleo case.

If my mbp kicked the bucket tomorrow, it would cost me between $1100 and $1300
outright to replace it. Where-as, my $200 moto g is two years old now, and my
ipod is three and I could limp along in sprightly manner with that if I had to.
But I could spend $700 on the mightiest android known to man unlocked and
carrier ready, and $300 on the new ipod touch wich is just a thuroughly awsome
piece of kit, and still have $300 left over to spend on accessories. As long
as I have a current back up of all my notes and things in the cloud when my mbp
goes, I won't even skip a beat.

Most of my people these days are fully mobile either via ipad or a phone of
some kind and don't own a computer of any kind. My parents computer died last
year and my mom replaced it with a $100 android tablet that does absolutely
everything she wants to do including run her small business, print patterns,
track recipes, advertize on facebook and more.

Mobile computing is better in every way. Mobiles are cheaper to build, cheaper
to package, cheaper to store, cheaper to ship, and cheaper to buy. They're
faster and more efficient for day to day computing than desktops which have
more power still but always take longer to do even the simplest thing such as
launch a program. Mobiles have better battery as you would expect. They
generate less material waste and have more recyclable components, especially
when you ad in the vast reduction in cable clutter.

Even though I'm not really happy with the stability and performance of the last
couple of IOS, I'd still take that over the atrocity of elcapitan from what
I've read and yes, windows 10 is a lot more user friendly than windows 8, but
don't make me laugh.

so again, I'm not holding my breath til my macbook dies, but I'm ready for when
it goes and I won't be replacing it with another macbook.

Enjoy,

Erik Burggraaf

Re: ipad full time?

2015-11-27 Thread Alex Hall
Keyboard commands are the main reason I prefer Mac (or Windows) to a
mobile-only solution. Yes, iOS is getting them solely, but they aren't there
yet, at all. Even then, some are iPad-specific, so thinking of an iPhone or
iPod as the primary doesn't work. On my Mac, right now, I could hit cmd-tab
once or twice to get to my Twitter app, arrow along since focus is still on the
table of tweets, and cmd-shift-v on a tweet I want to retweet. From Mail on
iOS, I'd have to either go to the Home screen or the App Switcher, find
Tweetings, double tap it, wait for it to be ready, find the tweets list and
hope it saved my place, then find a tweet I want to retweet and flick down
twice, double tap, flick right once, double tap. Doable, of course, but not as
efficient.

Then there are the apps you just can't get on iOS. Audio editing was mentioned;
I have never gotten the exact control over blocking off parts of audio that I
get on a computer. There's no substitute for hitting a key right when you want;
double tapping takes time, then there's the pause while iOS waits to see if
this is a triple tap, then the command is sent. There's also Xcode, which is
not a concern for most, but it is for me.

It all comes down to efficiency. Can I do a lot on iOS? Yes. Can I do more,
faster, on iOS with a bluetooth keyboard? Yes. Can I do still more, far more
efficiently, on a computer? Yes, at least for now. Are there things OS X can do
that iOS just can't? Oh yes, there are! Obviously, this is one guy's opinion,
and everyone has different requirements and wants. It's really a personal
choice, and no one can tell you what's best for you except you.

That's right. I'm an intensive user of UNIX tools, which one simply doesn't
have on mobile devices (and for my purposes, connecting to a remote server to
run them doesn't count). I also use keyboard commands very heavily.

What we'll see, I think, is that people who write a lot, build software or
have other specialized requirements will use more capable computers. Those who
are largely consumers of information won't need them (and that includes light
word processor users).

Great points made by all.

Like Alex there are just some tasks that I'll always use a Mac or
Windows laptop for.

Working with large documents, polishing my resume, spread sheet stuff
are all things I find much faster when using the computer as a pose to
my various mobile devices.

Also, running multiple apps is still painful on iOS. ( They've made
great strides in this area specially with iOS 9 but it still has a ways
to go before catching up with Windows or the mac.)
