My thoughts on the Apple Public Beta Program

2015-07-31 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi all
I now have both iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 El Capitan public beta on my devices.
While I cannot go into the specifics, I am really liking the program which
anyone can sign up to so long as they have an Apple ID. Note! Since this is
prerelease software, it's not for the faint of heart. The Feedback Assistant
apps that come with the program is awesome! I will definitely! enrol in future
public betas, rather than renew my developer account with Apple as I find the
bug reporting system on there to be clunky. Not so with the public beta
program. Best of all, the public beta program is at the right price smile.
For those like me who are adventurous, give it a shot.
Happy hacking!

Since it is a public beta, a person should be able to talk about what
they find shouldn't they be able to?

Re: My thoughts on the Apple Public Beta Program

2015-07-31 Thread venky . 92
I have been thinking about signing up for the beta program for a while now. If
I install a public beta of iOS 9, will I be able to roll back to iOS 8? Will my
iPhone backups, made with iOS 9 be backwards compatible with iOS 8 if I
rollback?
Thank you

Re: My thoughts on the Apple Public Beta Program

2015-07-31 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

You should examine why you want to use beta software. If you have one device
that is vital to be working at all time then don’t install beta software. Too
many people are complaining about problems with beta software but they signed
up to put up with bugs and report them to Apple so that we don’t have those
problems when it is formally released. If you have the time to give to Apple
and a spare device to test beta software then I guess we’ll all benefit from
your input. But if it is to meet your desire then you are doing it for the
wrong reasons.

Do not sign up if your concerned about having to roll back.

Re: playroom

2015-07-31 Thread Piotr Machacz
The playroom web client works an awful lot like the Windows app, down to the
various hotkeys. If you’ve never used that before, when you log in and access
the web client, you should get a welcome message and you should be placed in a
menu of a few buttons that you can navigate with the up and down arrow keys.
The first option here should be “create a new table”, while join will be the
next in case you want to play on someone else table. One more thing that could
be worth looking at is the options menu, where you can enable “browser speech”.
This makes most messages, except the interface, to be spoken using the web
speech api instead of an aria live region. This seems to work better than just
using VoiceOver’s live region support as it doesn’t interrupt itself.

Re: My thoughts on the Apple Public Beta Program

2015-07-31 Thread Ray Foret Jr
No. Even with public beta testing, we who are doing it are strictly precluded
from publicly discussing what it is we are finding. So it plainly says when
you sign up for it. I would, for my part, encourage you and all others who can
to do so. That's all I can say right now until the day Apple publicly releases
these packages. Let the careful reader of my words decipher what can be
deciphered.

Re: backspacing

2015-07-31 Thread Phil Halton
Somewhere in voiceover utility there is a setting that controls what voiceover
will speak as the cursor moves. The state the setting can be set to speak the
character you just passed over, or the character that you are about to pass
over. Find that setting and you'll probably be able to correct your problem.

Re: My thoughts on the Apple Public Beta Program

2015-07-31 Thread Blee Blat
I will not be enrolling in future betas most likely for the simple reason that
although the beta program is good they ship developers different betas than the
public which makes no sense to me at all! Never mind that I still don't
understand why people are hesitant to discuss public beta software when it's
actually public already and everyone can use it. Sure the final releases may or
may not have all the features but still I don't get that restriction. Otherwise
it's a good service and I'm glad I can make a list of all the things I need to
turn off before I ruin a perfectly new phone's battery with these data tracking
features so I'll thank them for that. :)

reclaiming space on hard drive

2015-07-31 Thread Pablo Sandoval
Hi everyone,
I’ve just noticed the usage on my Mac HD is getting more full than I like.
I’ve just deleted several gigs of data, and I am not seeing the space freed up
like I expected. Only a couple hundred megs freed up. I have emptied the trash,
and am not sure what I need to do to see this newly emptied space.
I’ve even restarted the Mac to see if something was hanging.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you.

Trying to delete contact, but it is still stubbornly showing up in email address book

2015-07-31 Thread Christine Grassman
Good day/night all:

I have (apparently) deleted a particular contact from both my iPhone and
MacBook’s Contacts. Presumably, having done so, iCloud will sync the change
properly. However, when I start typing in the email address of the recently
deleted contact, it is still popping up, complete with the name of the contact
I designated. I want to ensure it is completely deleted, because the person is
not receiving my emails, even though the email address is correct, I and she
are reliably receiving emails from others, and emails sent to her and copied to
others are getting through to the others. We cannot fathom why I can receive
emails from her, but she cannot receive them from me. Someone did check to
ensure she did not inadvertently block my email address.
Please help. I frequently need to send her emails. This is both a problem on my
MacBook Air and iPhone. When I do a search of Contacts, her information is
gone. I am at a loss.

Re: reclaiming space on hard drive

2015-07-31 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Odd. Then your free space should reflect those files being gone. One
handy way to figure out where you space went is to open your hard drive,
make sure you are in list view (command+2) and then go to View Options
(command-J). That pops up a window with extra options checkboxes. At the
bottom of that list of checkboxes is one that says Calculate all sizes.
Check that one and then command ~ to jump back to your list view of the
hard drive and there will be a Size column. Usually for folders the size
is just "--" but the Mac will start totaling up all the files and
replace those "--" with actual numbers. You can then start to focus on
the folders with the most space used and start to drill down to figure
out what's using the most space. The Calculate all sizes beats on your
hard drive making (ad updating) all those totals so when you're done
you'll want to turn that back off. My Applications folder is 71GB while
my OSX 10.10.4 system is only 11GB. I would expect the bulk of the
deletable stuff to be either apps you no longer need or stuff under
Users/youraccountnamefolder.

Re: playroom

2015-07-31 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey Donna. To access the Playroom web client, go to http://www.qcsalon.net and
there should be a link to access the web client. And to the person that gave
the suggestion to use the speech function of the web client, I actually used it
for the first time and I found a problem. The speech is too fast for my liking
and I found no way to adjust this. When I look in system preferences, the rate
of speech is set to what I want it to be so I know it has nothing to do with
that. So my question is, is there a way to set speech rate in Safari or will I
have to live with the too fast speech rate?

Re: My thoughts on the Apple Public Beta Program

2015-07-31 Thread Joe Quinn
it may not make sense, but that's the way it is. NDA, and all that. in spite of
it being public, ya still can't talk about it publically. now if something's
released about IOS 9 from apple, then it can be discussed. I think that's the
same for things that're released elsewhere. for instance cool blind tech did an
overview of what is going to be in iOS 9. maybe they shouldn't've done that,
NDA again, but they did.

Re: reclaiming space on hard drive

2015-07-31 Thread Pablo Sandoval
Ok, so I’ve downloaded and ran “Disk Doctor” as suggested by a lister.
I’ve also enabled “calculate all sizes” and my applications folder is 17.28gb,
Libraries is 5.17gb, system folder is 9.81gb, and my users folder is 17.43gb.
Total space used should be down around 50gb, any ideas guys/gals?
I’m still showing 81gb used.
Any ideas?

beta.apple.com
and read their FAQ very carefully. In there they answer what you can and

Hi!
OK when in mail press either VO+m or Control+f2 to get to the menu.
Then W to get to the window menu then arrow down to Previous Recipients and
press enter.
You should end up in a edit field just arrow right and you should find a table
of all people you've emailed go in to it and just press delete on any you do
not wish to keep!

Re: reclaiming space on hard drive

2015-07-31 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
That's not bad at all. There are some hidden things that can take up
space. How are you finding the free space count? There are a few hidden
things that can still throw off the overall math. The recovery partition
and such take about 1GB. I have a hidden folder called MobileBackups
which is about 1GB. If you're using MacPorts or the like your /opt and
/private folders can be a dozen or so GB.

that list of checkboxes is one that says Calculate all sizes. Check that one and then command ~ to

the size is just "--" but the Mac will start totaling up all the files and replace those
"--" with actual numbers. You can then start to focus on the folders with the most space

beats on your hard drive making (ad updating) all those totals so when you're done you'll want to
turn that back off. My Applications folder is 71GB while my OSX 10.10.4 system is only 11GB. I
would expect the bulk of the deletable stuff to be either apps you no longer need or stuff under

Re: playroom

2015-07-31 Thread Piotr Machacz
Hi Shawn,
That’s funny, because I have the opposite problem, the speech is much too slow
for my liking, especially if I’m playing with people who are very quick at
taking their turn. Anyway, I have posted to the forum suggesting that a speed
control be added, so if you’d like to reply and say it would be useful, the
post is at http://qcsalon.net/en/forum6/topic9756

Here Are Two Ways of Disabling The Built-in Trackpad on your MacBook Computer

2015-07-31 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

There are some MacBook users who prefer, for whatever reason, to disable the
built-in Trackpad on Their MacBook computers.

The following article describes how to accomplish this. The first method
requires that you attach a mouse or other pointing device, to your Mac.
However, the second method merely requires the quick toggling of the Mouse
Keys feature.

Even though the article was written back in 2008, the methods described work
just fine in the latest version of Yosemite. I have tested them.

Just keep in mind that the options, described in the article, are located in
the Accessibility Preferences area of Yosemite.

The link to the original article is located at the bottom of the text.

Enjoy,

Mark

Disable trackpad for extended typing sessions
By Rob Griffiths, MacworldOct 21, 2008 11:07 AM

If you use a Mac laptop with a trackpad, and spend quite a bit of time
typing on it-perhaps you're a writer for a Mac-related Web site or
something-you're probably well aware of what I consider to be one of the
most-important settings in OS X: the "Ignore accidental trackpad input"
checkbox on the Trackpad tab of the Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences
panel. If you have your trackpad set up to click when tapped-which I do, as
I find it much easier than tapping the button-and you do not enable the
"ignore trackpad" option, you'll find that your cursor (and hence, where
your typing appears) jumps around your document any time your finger or palm
accidentally taps your Mac's trackpad.

With this feature enabled, I've found that the cursor usually remains where
it's supposed to be, even if I accidentally brush the trackpad. That's
usually, not always-sometimes I'll accidentally tap-click after a typing
pause for instance, not notice that I've done so, then resume typing. I
usually only figure out what's happened after I've merged two sentences
together into one jumbled mess.

For those times when you'll be typing a lot of text, and don't want to worry
about the trackpad at all, here are two solutions. The first solution is to
keep a mouse with you, and plug it in when you're ready to start an extended
typing session. Then, in the Trackpad tab of the Keyboard & Mouse System
Preferences panel, check the "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" box,
and start typing. As long as the mouse is plugged in, that's the only way
you'll be able to move the mouse cursor. (Note that you can still move the
cursor's position within your text editor by using the arrow keys. You just
can't move the onscreen cursor via the trackpad.)

The second solution, and the one I prefer as it doesn't require any extra
hardware to lug around, relies on the Universal Access System Preferences
panel. Open that panel, and switch to the Mouse & Trackpad tab. Check the
box next to "Press the Option key five times to turn Mouse Keys on or off"
to enable Option-key control over the Mouse Keys feature. Next, check the
box next to "Ignore trackpad when Mouse Keys is on." So what have you done?
First, you set the system up so that pressing Option five times in a row
will turn on Mouse Keys, which allows for full cursor control with the
numeric keypad (which is embedded on the 789-UIO-JKL-M keys on a laptop).
Next, you told the system to completely disable the trackpad when Mouse Keys
is enabled. Using these two features together, you can put an end to all
accidental cursor movement while typing.

Try it out by opening TextEdit, and then pressing Option five times in a
row. Just like that, your trackpad will no longer work-you can click and
drag on it at will, but the cursor won't move an inch. Once you've finished
transcribing War & Peace, press the Option key five times in a row again,
and everything will be back to normal. There are two minor downsides to this
technique. First, you won't be able to use the embedded numeric keypad when
in Mouse Keys mode, because those keys are reserved for moving the cursor
around. As with the hardware solution, you can still use the arrow keys to
move the cursor within your document in either normal or trackpad-off modes.
Second, you may forget you've enabled this mode, and wonder why the trackpad
on your laptop no longer works-so remember to try pressing the Option key
five times in a row before resorting to a restart to fix the problem!

Hi,

I can actually see this being useful if you have a setup with a magic trackpad
and an external keyboard. I know I’d want to disable my internal trackpad for
that type of setup.

Siri on The Mac Anyone?

2015-07-31 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi all. After reading a review of Windows 10 from Cool Blind Tech and seeing
how Microsoft has integrated their virtual assistant, Cortana into their OS,
I've been wondering how Apple will respond. Is there a possibility that we
might see Siri in a future update to El Capitan or in a future release to OS X?
I'm really looking forward to the days ahead and seeing how Apple responds. Who
knows? Maybe we'll get the Siri voices for Voiceover on the Mac too.

Insert current date in Pages template?

2015-07-31 Thread Alex Hall
Hi list,
As promised, I'm back with another Pages question. I'm finally converting my
bill and service report templates from RTF to actual Pages templates, as it'll
be easier to fill them out this way. One thing I'd love to do is to have the
current date inserted into a new document when I generate one from the
template. Better still, I'd like to control with parts of the date appear. For
example, the main "date" field would be the full date, whereas another section
would be only the month and the year. Are either of these doable? I could make
placeholders and type it in manually, but it seems like Pages should be able to
manage this for me. Thanks in advance.

Maybe we'll get the Siri voices for Voiceover on the Mac too.

Re: reclaiming space on hard drive

2015-07-31 Thread Pablo Sandoval
Something is definitely up, I’ve just deleted another 3 gb of apps from my apps
folder, cleared trash, and ran Disk Doctor. Still shows 17.28gb as the size of
the apps folder. Ideas welcome, meantime I keep googling.

Re: reclaiming space on hard drive

2015-07-31 Thread Pablo Sandoval
Sorry to keep spamming the list, but I’ve discovered something else now. When I
go to my HD and do command i for information, interact with the scroll area,
and it shows 74gb available, and only 45.91gb used. What is going on?
Thanks for helping guys.
