Re: how to turn off stickykeys being announced in voiceover in osx?

2015-05-08 Thread helmuth
Hi, thanks for your reply. Tried this already, but it keeps saying
"stickykeys", whenever a modifier is pressed, so problem is not solved. You
can try it out by pressing 5x shift, this will turn the feature on and off.
Thanks for your further help in advance, Helmuth

Re: Preparing Full Drive for Use on Windows and Mac?

2015-05-08 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You can’t resize an NTFS filesystem with OS X. You’ll need Windows. If you
don’t have Windows, you’re only option is to move the data temporarily; you
could create an encrypted disk image on a cloud service and use that, in a
pinch.

Even if you had Windows, resizing is a risky business. I wouldn’t do it—not
with the only copy of your data, certainly. It seems to be a universal truth
that your only surviving copy will crash and burn during a repartitioning
operation. You should have at least one backup.

Re: some un-related mac questions

2015-05-08 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there.
I recommend new Mac users start with TextEdit on word processing first. That
way, you have less interacting in the beginning and it’s pretty simple. It’s
already on your Mac. TextEdit doesn’t offer a lot of formatting options, but it
does offer more than, Notepad in Windows. You can even read braille files in
it.

Re: I forgot one question

2015-05-08 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Ted.
I want to tell you one difference, and it’s simple, but it drove me crazy until
I figured it out when I first got my Mac. In Finder, if you want to copy to a
folder, and you have have pressed command c on the file, you don’t want to
press the Enter key when you get to the folder you want to copy to. You just
get on top of the folder and press either command v to paste a copy or option
command v to move the file. I know you didn’t ask that, but I can tell you that
if you forget like I did more than once and press the Enter key when you are on
top of a folder, you will find yourself in the rename place, and new Mac users
may have trouble figuring out what happened for a while. I like pressing Enter
on top of a foler or file to rename it now, but I created some interesting file
organizations on my Mac when I first got it because of this.

Nook

2015-05-08 Thread Christine Grassman
I have not used the Nook app for a while, but recently downloaded and attempted
to read a book. Where as I used to be able to swipe easily from page to page, I
now receive a “please wait” message and the new page loads slowly, or does not
load at all until I’ve tried swiping a time or two more.
Since I wish to take notes as I read, I do not wish to read continuously, which
is working fine. Has anyone else noticed this problem, and is there something
I can do to make page by page reading quicker? TIA.

I recommend this course on iTunes U:

.
I’ve subscribed to it and it looks good. All of the slides and programming

Here is the swift resource page on developer.apple.com:

Note that playgrounds can’t be used with Voiceover, but you don’t really need
that.

Interesting question about the Apple TV

2015-05-08 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
This question applies both to the 2nd and the 3rd generations.

So, I take close note here of realizing that to close one of the... well... as
I call them, applets on the device, by applet, I mean any of the things on your
menu, like Netflix, Movies, Hulu, HBO Now, PBX Kids, etc. Anyway, to close any
of these, you simply either hit your back button until you reach the main home
screen menu, or, you press and hold down the menu key. I know depending on if
you have the accessibility menu on or off, you then may have one more step to
get to the main menu, but my point still remains either way.

My question is, how do we really truely and honestly know if those applets
really indeed are fully closing? We don't really have an app switcher/chooser,
nor do we have a process manager/task manager of sort on the device, so really
Apple can say all the doo da day that these apps are closing, but, you know as
well as I, whether you like admitting it or not, that some companies, not
saying just Apple here, I mean this more generalized, have a tendency to
stretch or omit the truth with some things. I just wonder if maybe the memory
resources are actually not totally being cleared up just by backing out of
something. I wonder if on the low level end, if there's an accessible way that
we could find out and know for 100% sure what *really!* actually happens when
one backs out of one of those apps.

Kind a makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Chris.

Re: Interesting question about the Apple TV

2015-05-08 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Truth to tell, there is no accessible way, of which I am aware, to judge
whether those apps are really and truly closing when the main menu is returned
to. Some would, I suppose, say that in this case, it really does not matter.
Seems to me, if Netflix's behavior is anything by which to judge, however,
that the apps truly do close when the main menu is returned to. This, I judge
by tha fact that every time I return to the main menu and then open up Netflix
again on my Apple TV, I land in the screen where I am asked "who's watching
netflix?'. The fact that I stay apparently signed in, though, could also be
interpreated to mean that the app is not really closing. I suppose, for what
it's worth, that they do actually close.

The iPhone will stay signed in as well though. I think they just store some
kind of cookie that keeps these apps signed in so you don't have to enter the
info every time.

Highlighting for Instapaper

Hi Folks,

does anyone use the highlight tap of Instapaper in Safari 8? The manual says
just to highlight text on a web page and press Highlight in the options menue.
Unfortunately I couldn’t find such a menue. Could someone tell me how to save
text in Highlight in Instapaper using VO?

Thanks and all the best

Remember too, there is a setting within the Netflix applet that allows you to
sign out. So, I think it’s probably saving your account info within some sort
of a preference thing on the lower level of things.

If on the Macbook, the camera is at the top of the display. If on the iPad, you
will need to keep the iPad facing you for the camera. For this reason, I would
suggest the Macbook.

Re: Skype very important, please help

2015-05-08 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I don't wanna get into personal things, but what will be involved in the
interview? In other words, do you need to take notes, for example? If so,
you'd probably do best using the mac. I presume you have a microphone, or a
model system with a built in microphone and eyesight camera. No, you don't
have to use the camera if you don't want to, don't worry.

I use Skype on my mac quite regularly, so if you need any help, let me know.

Also, you're welcome to add me to your contacts, if you'd like to just chat
a bit ahead of time and get a feel for the app before the big event.

My Skype name is:

twinklesfriend2007

Actually, anyone on this list is more than welcome to add me. All that I
ask, if you do so, is please don't just send me the generic Hi
Twinklesfriend2007, please add me to your Skype contacts message. Please
personalize it by deleting that text out of the text field, and typing in
your actual name, and where I know you from specifically. Just as a
security percaution, I do not add people who just send the default generic
message. If you want to add me but can't figure out how to edit that
message, then please e-mail me and let me know your Skype name, and that it
was you who added me. This way, I don't dismiss it as only a spammer. I
now have close to 1200 people on my contact list, literally speaking, so I
therefore do! tend to get a lot of spam requests for some weird reason.

My private e-mail address is:

clgillan...@gmail.com

If I can help in any way, just let me know!

Chris.

If on the Macbook, the camera is at the top of the display. If on the
iPad, you will need to keep the iPad facing you for the camera. For this
reason, I would suggest the Macbook.

SIRI not using enhanced quality voice on my new iPhone6

2015-05-08 Thread Phil Halton
I have U.S. english enhanced quality voice installed and selected as default
language on my new iPhone6. However, SIRI appears to revert to the non-enhanced
quality voice. Other than that, everything is as it should be with the voice.
Any suggestions? I’ve looked everywhere I know to look and can’t find how to
get siri to speak in the higher quality voice.

thanks

They set up a geniusBar appointment for me just in case I need the help, but

Is VO avbailable during the setup process on IOS8.3?

2015-05-08 Thread Phil Halton
I need to do a reset and restore from backup on my iPhone6, but I don’t think
VO is readily available at that point. Don’t I need a sighted person to
initially turn it on on the iPhone?

Oh wait, Can’t I turn on VO from iTunes?
Please give me any details on reseting and restoring with VO?

Phil,

You're gonna be just fine. Once the phone boots up, just tripple click the
home key. No, you don't have to set that up first. If you do it right then
from the very very first screen that pops up, you'll be just fine.

Re: SIRI not using enhanced quality voice on my new iPhone6

2015-05-08 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Phil. You can triple click the home button to start Voiceover during setup.
But that shouldn't be necessary to reset your phone. As a matter of fact, what
Apple Accessibility told you to do is wrong. The enhanced quality voice for
Siri won't download if you're not plugged in to a power source and connected to
wifi. Once those two steps are done, the voice should download. HTH.

Re: SIRI not using enhanced quality voice on my new iPhone6

2015-05-08 Thread Alan Lemly
Phil,

Go into settings, general, accessibility, speech, voices, and then double tap
on the appropriate language as I did US English. On the screen which opens,
double tap on enhanced quality even if it says it is already selected. When I
did this after getting my iPhone 6 and restoring my iPhone 5 backup to it, this
setting said I had the enhanced voice but it didn't download until I drilled
down into this setting. After that, the enhanced voice downloaded and worked
fine.

Let us know if this works.

Re: SIRI not using enhanced quality voice on my new iPhone6

2015-05-08 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Alan, These steps only work for Voiceover. What he's trying to do is download
the enhanced quality voice for Siri which is independent of Voiceover. In order
to download the enhanced quality voice for Siri, you have to be plugged in to a
power source and connected to wifi.
