Re: Microsoft RDP on Mac problem

2015-03-29 Thread Sean Murphy
Hello

I am very interested in finding out more about your RPD solution. If you are
running this on the Mac platform. I assume you are running Jaws or like screen
reader on the other end? If so, how successful is the controlling of windows
and the screen reader? Can you copy things from the windows platform like files
and web content?

Please let me know, since I have been looking for a solution of this type.

Re: Busy, Busy, Busy -- It's DrivingMe Nuts

2015-03-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Bill,

It may be useful to take a look at the Network Utility and see what kind of
speed you’re getting through your WiFi card and router connection. To do this,

• Go up to the Apple menu and select About This Mac.
• VO-space on the System Report button.

This is where it gets a little different than usual. Use the commands I
mention below to access the menubar, as I’ve found that the regular VO menu
commands don’t work as they should in the System Information app.

• Press ctrl-f2 to bring focus to the menubar. (Add the FN key if necessary)
• navigate right to the Window menu.
• Navigate down to the Network Utility item.
• Select the Info tab and make sure that the WiFi Interface is chosen.

Check your network speed, if there’s too many Send/Receive errors or
collisions, there could be some network problems. If your speed is less than
144 MB/s, that could also be an issue. Nowadays, you should be getting at
least 300 MB/s or more on a home router. I get 450 out of mine.

Let me know your results.

Hi,

No, that shouldn’t affect anything. I have multiple devices accessing my
iCloud account simultaneously both at home and at work. I also have a gMail
account through Google App, a Pop account through my ISP, and two other iMap
accounts for other duties all configured through Mail with no busy problems at
all. What kind of router are you using? Are you connected via WiFi or
ethernet?

Hi,

I haven’t heard of many experiencing this, so, I’m guessing that it has
something to do with your personal configuration or situation. That machine is
plenty powerful enough to handle the job. Some questions to determine what may
be causing the issues:

1. What Mail view do you use? Modern or Classic?
2. Do you have multiple Mail accounts? i.e.., gMail, iCloud, local ISP?
3. What protocol do your accounts use? iMap, Pop, Exchange?
4. Is your Preview pane enabled or disabled?
5. Which navigation method do you normally use? That is, navigate to message
then VO-j to read it or navigate to the message then hit return to read it?

• If you have multiple accounts, try disabling all but one of them. Does the
busy tendency go away? If so, turn on other accounts one at a time to try to
determine which account may be causing the problem. You disable accounts in
Mail Prefs, in the Accounts pane. Select the accounts from the Accounts table,
then uncheck the “Enable this Account” checkbox.

• If your Preview pane is enabled, try disabling it to see if that makes a
difference.

HTH.

Proposal to create an alternate MacVisionaries list

2015-03-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Hello all,

One thing that yesterday's events have made abundantly clear, is that this list
is no longer being moderated. This surprises me quite a bit, because in the
early days of MacVisionaries, Cara was an extremely diligent moderator. I know
she took on at least one co-mod a while back, but I don't remember who that
was, and that person doesn't seem to be around either. While I'm not a big
believer in heavy moderation, I do think that there at least needs to be
someone paying some attention so that when morons like Mario get loose, they
can be removed from the list. I will therefore offer to create an alternate
list, which I--and hopefully one co-mod will moderate, at least to the extent
of managing subscriptions and dealing with bad behavior. However, I don't want
to do this unless it is something that the majority of the community wants.
Please let me know if you would like an alternate moderated list, and also if
you have any wish to co-mod with me. Please note that even a low level of
modding is a fair amount of work, so please don't offer unless you're willing
and able to put in the time. My hope is that if there are two of us, we can
set things up so the work isn't too much for either one of us.
Thanks,
Donna

Donna, I don't think another list is necessary, message rules take care of
people like him. That's not to say I'm condoning what he's doing, it is just
purile. But we can deal with it ourselves. Also when you hear his name on the

The best way to deal with this kind of behavior is simply to ignore

Re: To the moderators, is this really the type of person or content you want on this list?

2015-03-29 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You’ll have to do it server-side, using whatever method your provider gives you.

But guys, look—more effort has been expended talking about these posts than on
the posts themselves. And anyone trying to follow the threads he’s hijacked is
inconvenienced by it.

Don’t feed the trolls. I know it’s tempting—guilty of it myself sometimes—but
this is the Internet, and people can choose to distance themselves from earthly
scruples if they want to. It is a miracle that, for the most part, in
situations like this anyway, you can easily do something about it yourself,
without getting anyone else involved. (Although, if I were one of the list
mods, I’d be feeling a little bit bad at this point.)

Re: Proposal to create an alternate MacVisionaries list

2015-03-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Now you're being as obnoxious as he is. there is no need for you to insult me,
or to imply that I'm unable to cope with life. I simply extended an offer to
the list. That's all. I'm neither invested in having a different list, nor in
becoming moderator. So now it's your turn to chill, don't make more of my
email than was intended.
Best,

Does iCloud still work if connected to a VPN?

2015-03-29 Thread Justin Mann
Hi all,
I’m using private internet access vpn:
http://www.piavpn.com
on the iPhone, and so far I have to say it’s been the most stable vpn that I’ve
used thus far. If the iOS device is connected to vpn, and it is locked, does
it still backup to iCloud?

By the way, Installing private internet access on the mac is an absolute
breeze, and it is quite accessible.

Re: Proposal to create an alternate MacVisionaries list

2015-03-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

While I don’t disagree with the sentiment of this eMail, I do feel that action
beyond the “Delete” key is necessary. If I was very new to the list, or
possibly surfing the posts on the web trying to determine if I’d like to join
this community, vulgar, insulting and disrespectful posts such as these would
likely deter me from joining. We are a community of users assisting and being
assisted by each other and those sorts of attacks have no place in our
community. Pressing the “Delete” key shields ourselves but not the community.
Evaluating or judging how others react to these posts is unnecessary. Action
should be taken for the benefit of the community.

I’ve been on this list pretty well since its inception and the various
moderators do usually take action. There could be a multitude of reasons why
things weren’t dealt with promptly yesterday, but I’m sure that they will be
dealt with real soon.

Later...

Re: Proposal to create an alternate MacVisionaries list

2015-03-29 Thread Kliph
I already have a alternant list. It’s peel the apple. And we cover
mac, iPhone, iPad, appleTV, and even have a little open discussion on the
weekends. There are 2 mods. We both monitor the list very closely, and make
sure everyones playing and talking nice. We don’t police very often, and thank
goodness so far we haven’t had too. The list has been up and running for about
8 months now, and anyone who wants can come and join. It’s also on google
groups, and the info is below. Hope to see you there!

Frustrated with your Mac, I-device, or AppleTV? New user and want quick
efficient answers? Or maybe you know apple products and want to contribute?
Then come join a list where questions are always answered, and we are always
patient with you.

Hey there, how are you doing? Exactly what problems are you talking about? I am
by running version 8.2, and don't have any issues at all. Any problem I do have
is specifically in Safari. For some reason, and some sites, you will not be
able to use the swipe navigation to go through webpages. Simply going to the
home screen, and read injured Safari actually solve the problem though. Have
any of you cheeriest such problems?

Hi believer.

 you have absolutely right.
these disgusting rats criticize me, but they love the party...
And now joined to dance the same music...
They are all full of shit in their heads, and so do not think like people.
Not yet realized that I'm play with them...
In fact, they all are guilty of their own attitudes...
Each one has his hands full of stones...
They are all sinners in this story, but like to portray themselves as
little angels.

But now the party it is over because I'm gonna turn off the lights.
Now you can get back all in your lifes without shit in your heads...

Mario, grow the fuck up. Just because iOS and possibly OS X isn't going
the way you want it to go doesn't mean you have to shit on everybody on
these lists. I mean, Mac Visionaries and Viphone are family oriented
lists. People should be able to write to these lists without having to
feel alienated. Even kids right to these lists. You don't know that.
Show some fucking common sense and stop this bullshit. Go fuck your best
friend Pablo Morales. I bet he would like it. Oh and by the way, feet
doesn't have an S. The singular word for feet is foot and the plurrel
form is feet. Why don't you stop learning how to cuss people out and
learn to speak proper English you dumb fuck. Oh yeah, you're probably
fuking Pablo up the ass so you don't have time for that. Oh yeah, and if
your tiny little brain can comprehend this, *DO Not* reply to this email
'cause I don't give a shit what you have to say and I'll delete it.
Again, grow the fuck up.

Siri not available

2015-03-29 Thread Phil Halton
I am getting “siri not available
, connect to the internet” messages all of a sudden when I try to use Siri.
Siri works fine when I’m on my wifi network, and it used to work fine when away
from internet connections as well. But now, if I turn off wifi or move out of
network range, I get this message.

I’ve done a power cycle of the iPhone5 and again no Siri. I then did a network
reset with no joy. I’ve looked in the Siri settings and the cellular settings
and can find no reason for this. I’m hoping to avoid doing a total device
reset.
Any ideas?

Chris, Mario kinda reminds me of another person on another mailing list named
Pablo Morales. Both of them like to complain about issues that most of us
aren't experiencing. The thing is, Apple must be doing something right if blind
and sighted people keep buying their products. And sure, there are bugs, but I
along with a hand full of blind beta testers are working hard to make iOS 8.3
and OS X Yosemite the best it can be.
As for Mario's questionable language, surprisingly, I'm not offended. I just
laughed at it because it shows how childish this person really is, so it was
entertaining for me. But on a serious note, this ain't the Zone BBS or it's
mailing list, so I agree with others that the swearing temper tantrum isn't
appropriate for a *Family* mailing list and should be dealt with.

I have to agree with the believer, here. I don't know what you guys are
talking about. Many of Yuma's comments are about whether Apple is still on the
cutting edge. I agree that Tim Cook and Johnny Ives aren't the visionaries
that Steve Jobs was, there's no question about that. But in terms of the
actual products, I've got IOS 8.2 on my phone, and I actually find Voiceover to
be more responsive than with IOS 8.0, so it seems pretty clear to me that they
made some accessibility improvements. I'm running Yosemite on my MBA, and am
happy with that as well. I don't feel in anyway that accessibility is being
pushed off to the side. Are there things that could be improved, absolutely.
But Apple is still doing a better job than any other company of building native
accessibility into its products. I had to use Windows 8 at my old job, and I
can say truthfully it'd be a cold day in hell before I switch back to a PC. I
haven't used an Android phone since 2010, and I'm sure the landscape there has
changed significantly since then. But when I did try it, the experience did
not bring me joy.

This is just my experience, and as such, it is not intended to invalidate
the experiences of anyone who may actually be having problems, just to say that
not all of us are. Don't know why some would be while others aren't, but
perhaps that is the case.
  Best,
  Donna

Re: learning to use numbers

2015-03-29 Thread Phil Halton
Hi Laura,
The best resource I’ve found is the numbers help system. There are no tutorials
per se. I suggest starting out making a simple spreadsheet with one table and
start experimenting. Read the help files from the very beginning and move along
through the materials testing things out in your test spreadsheet. Ask lots of
questions here in the forum and you’ll be up and running in no time.
Do you have any spreadsheet experience, say with Excel? or, are you coming to
spreadsheeting for the first time?

Re: Siri not available

2015-03-29 Thread David Griffith

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I suspect that, as the
problem eventually disappeared, it was actually a problem at the Apple end.

I have no evidence for this except that it all occurred at about the
same time as other people started reporting problems with iTunes and the
App Store. I think these problems were also eventually resolved at the
Apple End.

Siri works fine when I’m on my wifi network, and it used to work fine when away

network range, I get this message.

I’ve done a power cycle of the iPhone5 and again no Siri. I then did a
network reset with no joy. I’ve looked in the Siri settings and the cellular
settings and can find no reason for this. I’m hoping to avoid doing a total

Any ideas?

Hi Laura
If you know how to use Excel, you should know that numbers will except Excel
files. One of the things you should know right away so that you don't take
forever to figure it out, is that when you press the = to start your formula,
the first thing to do is to press the right arrow key. That get you in the
correct cursor position to start the rest to your formula.

Hello All,

I'm in the same boat as Laura, but have applied some of the same principles
that I've used in Excel. What surprised me was that VO announced the header for
each column when in a particular cell. I was wondering how specify the defined
ranges when creating a simple formula. It was difficult to ascertain the
coordinates of the column and row like in Excel. I just opened the formula
dialog list and chose "sum" to get it inserted to tabulate the column. Any
suggestions regarding the above would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Chris, Mario kinda reminds me of another person on another mailing list
named Pablo Morales.
just laughed at it because it shows how childish this person really is, so it
was entertaining for me. But on a serious note, this ain't the Zone BBS or it's
mailing list, so I agree with others that the swearing temper tantrum isn't
appropriate for a *Family* mailing list and should be dealt with.

I have to agree with the believer, here. I don't know what you guys
are talking about. Many of Yuma's comments are about whether Apple is still on
the cutting edge.

This is just my experience, and as such, it is not intended to
invalidate the experiences of anyone who may actually be having problems, just
to say that not all of us are. Don't know why some would be while others
aren't, but perhaps that is the case.
Best,

Re: learning to use numbers

2015-03-29 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hello Eileen
I think I understand what you're asking, so I will do my best to explain how I
figure out my ranges. If you know you want to start with the first cell in your
column then it is extremely easy because you don't have to figure it out
basically. If I want to add a column of numbers, the first thing I do is draw a
line, and the characteristics of that line is text. I put an apostrophe and
then six or 7 ='s so that voiceover will save them. This separates the Numbers
I want to add from the answer. Then I go to the menu with Vo mand right arrow
to insert. Then I find the entry that says formula, and choose sum. Then I
press the return key.

if you want to start at something other than the first cell in your column
then you can locate the first cell, select to the end of your column with
shift command down aero. A lot of times I just leave my finger on the shift key
and go up arrow until I find the line that I talked about earlier. I do this if
I have gone too far . Then I can use the menu to choose the option to add the
numbers. You can use the same procedure for rows of numbers as well although I
do not insert a line if I'm doing a roll of numbers. The answer is inserted in
the cell to the right of where I start selecting.
Hope all this helps.
Gigi

I agree. I have had to delete continuously over sunday while i was busy on my
assignments. This over a feature or lack of on a phone. Think about it, people.
What then if the topic was something sensitive? It shows a certain level of
immaturity and lack of real activities. And a list should not require
moderation if people are aware that saying fuck or shit is wrong to start with.
Whoever starts it. But falling into the trap is just as short sighted pun
intended.

All this commotion for absolutely nothing consequent.

 Hello all,

One thing that yesterday's events have made abundantly clear, is that this

moderator. I know she took on at least one co-mod a while back, but I

there at least needs to be someone paying some attention so that when
morons like Mario get loose, they can be removed from the list. I will
therefore offer to create an alternate list, which I--and hopefully one
co-mod will moderate, at least to the extent of managing subscriptions and
dealing with bad behavior. However, I don't want to do this unless it is
something that the majority of the community wants. Please let me know if
you would like an alternate moderated list, and also if you have any wish
to co-mod with me. Please note that even a low level of modding is a fair
amount of work, so please don't offer unless you're willing and able to
put in the time. My hope is that if there are two of us, we can set
things up so the work isn't too much for either one of us.
 Thanks,

Re: learning to use numbers

2015-03-29 Thread Phil Halton
I’ll take a stab at this.
if you create a header row or a header column in your table and place a text
description in that header cell, then you can reference that label in the
formula editor to refer to the entire row/column.
for example, if you have one header row with contents columnA, columnB, columnC
etc across row 1. then you could have a formula tlike =sum(columnA) and that
would sum all cells in column a.
Tables have header areas with a max of 5 rows, a data area with unspecified
number of rows, and a footer area with a max of 5 rows.
The header row closest to the data area is used as labels for the data . Also,
there can be header columns up to a max of 5, and the column closest to the
data area is used as labels for the data rows.
So, with a single header column containing labels row 2, row3, row4, etc. You
could reference a single data cell with an address of colB,row4 for example.
When in the editor, just start typing the name of the row or column header
label and it will auto complete for you if possible.

Hope this is what your asking for, I’m a bit tired and not giving my best
thought to the question. Hope it gets you started.
Also, I highly recommend reading the section on relative and absolute
addressing and all other general topics in the numbers help system. reading
that and then experimenting with simple formulas will answer more questions for
you than you might think.

Re: Logos Bible Software

2015-03-29 Thread CJ Daniel
Emelio,

As previously stated, Logos is not accessible. Also, the afore mentioned
Eloquent—the bible software previously known as MacSword—has not been
accessible since the introduction of Mavericks. Well, @ least not in my
experience. And, I did try to contact the developer, twice, with no joy.

So, as disappointed as I was not to have bible software on the Mac, I contacted
Optasia Ministries & had a huge collection of bibles, commentaries,
dictionaries, etc, etc sent to me. It can be a bit cumbersome using HTML,
text, & various other formats of files; but it works & just reminds me of
having a bunch of books on my real desktop. I, also, have had great success
using BlueLetterBible.org online. Lastly, a mod on another list has noted—on
several occasions— how happy he is with the BlueLetterBible software for IOS,
that he uses with VoiceOver.

Anyway, I hope this helps,

Re: Proposal to create an alternate MacVisionaries list

2015-03-29 Thread CJ Daniel
Donna,

Don’t blame you one bit. You were pretty vilely used by this person. Your
reaction seems pretty understandable. But, I don’t think we need to throw the
baby out with the bathwater yet.

In fact, if your ready to take on the responsibility of being a mod, perhaps
you could volunteer to take up some of the apparent slack on this list? I’m
sure there’s a reason that this particular incident has been allowed to go un
addressed. But, I’m pretty sure it’ll be taken care of. Anyway, just a
thought about modding this list.

Seriously, I’m sorry that you were so badly abused,

CJ

  CJ

  Hello all,

One thing that yesterday's events have made abundantly clear, is that
this list is no longer being moderated. This surprises me quite a bit, because
in the early days of MacVisionaries, Cara was an extremely diligent moderator.
I know she took on at least one co-mod a while back, but I don't remember who
that was, and that person doesn't seem to be around either. While I'm not a
big believer in heavy moderation, I do think that there at least needs to be
someone paying some attention so that when morons like Mario get loose, they
can be removed from the list.
  Thanks,
  Donna

You'd assign it to a commander, at least that's the easiest way I can think of.
You'll also need the Talking Dashboard scripts, since that zip file contains

Moderation of the list

2015-03-29 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Wanted to let you all know that the account in question is now blocked
from the list. I should point out a couple things:

1. I'm not the moderator, I just help out with registering new users, as
many of you already know. By nature of that role I can also help folks
out by fiddling with their accounts. While I may be overstepping my
role, it was obvious to me that this cup of sewage was spoiling our
barrel of wine.

2. I went through the history of postings from when the account was
added in 2011 and the screeds of late do not seem to be of the same
person. I suspect the account somehow got hacked and the new owner
decided to have some 'fun' by trolling our list. The original poster was
usually on-topic up through December of last year and then went silent.
Suddenly he pops up on the list with 27 posts in two days of a most
unpleasant nature.

3. I'm not familiar enough with how this system works to know if we can
delete the messages. I'll poke around and find out. That won't help your
inbox but it might be some solace to the real owner of the account whose
name is now associated with the recent unpleasantness.

Sorry for not pulling the plug sooner. I'm not on my email as often on
weekends.

Chris,

Thank you! I was 100% confident that you would get to the bottom of this.
Please might I ask going forward who the actual moderator(s) are?

There is no need for you to apologize, as far as I see things. You simply
were doing your job, and you have a life outside this list. Those who
expected you to instantly do something frankly are the ones who were out of
line, in my not so humble opinion.

Anyway, as I said, thank you for doing this. It is very much appreciated.

Chris.

All I can say is, all's well that ends well. Like I said earlier, I wasn't

hacker tried to ruin my reputation on this list. Glad to see things back to
normal so that now we can get back to the wonderful world of OS X and iOS.

Many thanks.

Clearly this is an important list with many resourceful people and it
appears that there are some good folk who would be prepared to help out

Re: Moderation of the list

2015-03-29 Thread Joanne Chua
Thanks so much Chris for sorting this out rather quickly and also give us some
clarification as to the possibility of hacker on the email address.
This list never fails me when come to anything Mac, and i think, generally, the
listers have a mutural respect to each other and their personal space.
It is rather, interesting, when, something like this happen, how many of the
people will jump up and down and request some changes to the list.
Since i join from some years ago, i never see such problem within the list
before, and definitely not personal abuses towards anyone on list.
I hope, now, since that unfortunate incident now been done and dusted, the
listers can calm down and have a normal and meaningful discussion.
If, something like that happen to any list, and the only action to take for
some is to create other list, sooner or later, the internet will be full of
abendent list. After all, there is no universal rules to say that we must all
get along with each other.

Ones again, thanks very much, and also, thanks for the mods and the admins of
this list.
