Re: Cannot find list of backups on MacBook Air in iTunes any more

2014-12-30 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hello,

If I go to iTunes, itunes preferences with command+comma, and then interact
with the toolbar and choose "devices" button, and then stop interacting with
the toolbar, I can find a list of my backups in a table with which you need to
interact again. That's where your backups are located.

But you mentioned "scroll area around the sinc button". This also still exists
but in this area you choose whether you want to back up to your computer or to
iCloud, and you can initiate backup from there too. You need to have your
device connected and chosen under device button in order for this scroll area
to appear. Then you interact with the scroll area and there you can see all
sorts of things like your device serial number, check for updates button,
accessibility button etc.

Hope this will help.

Also, it might be worth your while checking in "recently purchased" playlist
and "recently added" playlist too. I know it is frustrating but that's how i
managed to find one of my purchases because as Cheryl says sometimes they are
given unusual categories like "spoken worrd" and therefore are listed in your
music.

 This is what I do.

With the iTunes store open, bring up the item chooser and search for the

You'll then have a series of Tabs where you can choose the type of content

Alex,

You said you had purchased this audiobook on your iPhone? Therefore, have you
synced your iphone with the computer? Also, when you connect your iphone to
your mac, and open itunes, under file menu/devices you have a choice of
transferring yourp your purchases to your itunes library on your mac. See
whether it's available to you and whether you have any purchases to transfer.

Hi!
Another option if needed is to go to the menu [VO+m or Control+f2] and go to
the file heading and arrow down to the Devices sub menu and arrow right into
that and you should find all the options in there including restore from back
up!

what does “copy link” mean? does it copy the link to your clipboard or to

Your first guess is correct. Copy link will copy the link to the clip board.
With most current Drop box links, when you click on the link, a special page
should open up from which you can download the linked file.

Copy link item copies the link to your clipboard. I then open Safari or any

to install my 64 bit windows
basicly you run this talking installer, either from cd or usb then have
your windows disk or usb drive in as well,
then run your windows set up and its pritty straight forward
if you want the installer I can post it some where
some one re did the talking installer and made his own version of it.
its quite good
only thing I am running in to is the usb audio problem at set up see

If there is no simple way, it would be ok also to redirect the stderr file on a
.txt but how?
It is not clear what you are trying to do. If you want the output from a
command that appears on the screen in a txt file then use the "tee"
command.

command | tee textfile

If your goal is something else then please do explain in more detail.

Hi Hank,

As the last person posted, It would be great for you to post where one could
obtain a talking installer that would work on a 64 bit Mac machine. Thanks.

Re: using it without a printer

2014-12-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
No. If you are talking about the Index print application, that has nothing to
do with creating braille files; it just sends your file to the embosser for
printing. If you want to turn files to braille, you either have to have another
program to do that, such as louis or Duxbury (though I think the latter is
still in Beta on the Mac) or you have to have a file that is already in
braille, or you have to use the latest firmware on an Index braille embosser
which provides louis as an option. In fact, even if you are using the latest
firmware and Louis, when you want to do a braille file you go back to using the
Index print application because that prints directly without changing the
format while Louis with the new firmware update assumes the file being
presented is for changing to whatever language and type you have chosen. Well,
"assume" would seem to denote intelligent choice - lol! That's just the way
it's designed to work!

Re: using it without a printer

2014-12-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, I see you are talking about Index Direct rather than Index print. But I
don't think Index Direct actually installs Louis on your computer or anything.
You install the driver upgrade on your Mac and then use your embosser with the
upgraded firmware. I think if you want to use Louis independently you will have
to install it yourself on our Mac. You can either install the components in
terminal or there is a Mac app done by Greg Kearney for which I don't have the
link right at hand. I did an install of all the Louis components I needed in
terminal because I had trouble with the Mac app doing Spanish but Greg has put
out a new version since then which I haven't gotten around to testing.

I would add a few things to this. If you use Fusion, you can keep a

backup of your VM, or VMs anywhere you like, so even if you have to
reinstall OS X from scratch, you don't have to lose your VM, or have it
backed up by Time Machine. You can share files and folders between the two,
and largely protect your Windows from hacks by staying Mac side until you
actually need Windows. You can also take snapshots of your VM to which you
can return should anything ever go wrong with it, and these really do fix a
lot of problems. You can also easily manage your keyboard in Fusion so that
you have pretty much a native Windows experience while in Windows if you
wish. The time to think about Bootcamp is if you want to do something you
know can cause problems in Fusion, or if you don't switch between systems
much or can't afford Fusion.

How to block ads and malicious websites using the host file in OS10

2014-12-30 Thread DD

If you have gotten tired of the ads in youtube and elsewhere here is a way
to block them. I have tried out this method for a number of days and in
youtube have not seen one ad.

Because I do most things in terminal except for youtube I don't encounter
ads ormalicious websites so I have no experience there. Look here:

https://giuliomac.wordpress.com/2014/02/19/how-to-block-ads/

This method works with any operating system which can connect with the
internet with any browser. There is a small bit there about how to do the
mac version.

Basically there is a plain text file in /private/etc called "hosts". It
contains internet url locations for the system to ignore. I would advise
renaming the existing "hosts" file before substituting the new one.

The version of it in the zip file at the above link contains many many
such sources known to cause popup ads such as those in youtube and else
where. Those known to be malicious websites are blocked also.

The file is updated once a month when additional ad and malicious websites
become known. Using the examples in the file one can add sites one does
not want to appear, such as those a child should not visit.

The result is that the ads and malicious websites disappear as far as you
are concerned. The internet works faster because those sites never enter
into the picture. Computer security is much improved because malicious
websites never see you on the net to plant nasties on your system.

Re: Audio restoration of old cassettes

2014-12-30 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
If you don't mind playing with open source stuff in the terminal, sox
has some noise reduction functions. You can find details here:

http://sox.sourceforge.net/sox.html

by searching for 'hiss' on that page. Basically you run a bit of your
recording which should be silent (other than the hiss) to make a filter
profile and then you use that profile to remove those same sounds from
the rest of the recording. Likewise there is a compressor filter called
"compand" which might help with your loud bit at the beginning.

Subject: Audio restoration of old cassettes

Greetings to all of you,

I have a large cassette library of recordings that I started making in the
early 70s, and I want to digitize them. I have already transferred many of
them to .wav files but for storage constraints, I already have converted
many of them, hiss, crackles and all, to MP3.

None of these cassettes was recorded in stereo; I didn’t even own a stereo
microphone at the time.

I recently purchased Amadeus Pro, and it has a built-in plug-in for dealing
with cassettes. However, I think I am screwing up on the normalization
process and what levels to set volume, etc. It is obvious that I am an
amateur at this. What I want to do is remove the hiss, as well as the loud
volume that occurs for about 1/10 second after a pause in the audio. Can
this be accomplished with Amadeus Pro as is, or do I need to buy something
else? One very helpful person who occasionally posts to this list,
recommended a program called RS, but he seemed to lament the company’s plans
for future versions, where accessibility is concerned. If Amadeus Pro will
do what I need, then I suspect that I wouldn’t need RS.

If anyone can give me the best parameters for working with Amadeus Pro or
thoughts using a different approach or different program, I’d be grateful.

Many thanks in advance,

Mike

Hey Jessica,

Do you know if you have the queue files? If so, you could use XLD which works
really well and very accessible there is a bit of a learning curve but it’s not
bad.

doesn’t look too bad at all. Actually the first thing that comes up is a list

Re: Cannot find list of backups on MacBook Air in iTunes any more

2014-12-30 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

Once you connect your device to your mac, it should appear under devices menu
button in the main window. Look around for the item that voiceover reads as
devices button. Activate it with vo+spacebar. You should then see your
devices there, It's a popup window. Choose the device you wish by pressing
vo+spacebar on it. The popup window will close. Vo+right arrow, and first you
should come across the name of your device with the radiobutton that should be
checked/selected. Then to the right of it - but maybe not immediately to the
right I can't remember now - you should here voiceover say "scroll area".
Interact with it and you can then vo+arrow keys around the info there.
Sometimes you have to select the device twice, I don't know why but I've just
tested it and first time the scroll area didn't appear so I had to find the
device popup button and select my device again.

Hope this will help.

Re: How to block ads and malicious websites using the host file in OS10

2014-12-30 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

This is a very interesting post. I've downloaded the hosts.zip file but I find
in the zipped folder only files that I would consider to be windows files only.
In the private/etc folder, there's no equivalent host file that I could
replace. The downloaded zipped file only has a unix executable file, and
hosts.bat. The private/etc folder on my mac doesn't have hosts.bat file. but
only hosts TextEdit.app Document. How can I accomplish what the instructions
in the link you sent tell me to do?

I've been on the website from which one can download the file but there's no
reference on it to the os mac operating system.

Many thanks

Re: program for the mac that will audo-split/tag mp3 files.

2014-12-30 Thread Jessica Moss
No I don't have those anymore, I deleted most of them not knowing what they
were. What are cue files?
I don't know what on earth this person creating them did, but when I
downloaded them, they were in some format called .ape, which I've never heard
of, but had to convert to mp3 format, then they came with the .cue files, which
I had no idea what those were so got rid of them after I converted the others,
then found out they were each just one track, which made no sense to me; had no
idea people were still doing that or why they'd want to in the first place.

Re: Cannot find list of backups on MacBook Air in iTunes any more

2014-12-30 Thread Christine Grassman
Sorry; perhaps I was not clear. The devices submenu works great, as does
locating backups in Preferences, as described. But I cannot locate the scroll
area which permits choosing backup near the sync button when interfacing with
iTunes without utilizing Preferences or the Devices submenu, as I used to do.
It reads my device name, how much of each type of data exists on the phone, how
much memory I have left, but I do not see the accessibility options, serial
number, ability to back up, etc. in that area no matter how I manipulate
things, and I can’t understand why.

A question about messaging on the Mac

2014-12-30 Thread Mary-Jo Lord
Hi,

I have messages synched with my phone, and can read them and locate the
various fields. When I go to the field to type a reply message however,
anything that I type does not show up. I have interacted with the edit
field, and attempted to write with quick nav on and off. Is there something
else that I should be doing?

Thanks,

Re: links in email

Hi,

I think if the file is a zip file it will download. However, if it's an mp3
file or something like that then it takes you to safari then it just starts
playing like Ray said. What I do in this case is use VO+right arrow to get to
the stop button and activate that. You should then be able to use VO+shift+m to
get to the menu. Arrow down to download video and activate that and your file
should download.

Gabe

Hi,

I have messages synched with my phone, and can read them and locate the various
fields. When I go to the field to type a reply message however, anything that I
type does not show up. I have interacted with the edit field, and attempted to
write with quick nav on and off. Is there something else that I should be doing?

Thanks,

once i have files playing i can pause it with the space bar and then go into

iTunes playlist question

2014-12-30 Thread Kristeen Hughes
Hello,
I hope this query makes sense. I have made an iTunes playlist with songs from
my library. They are not protected in any way. I want to put this playlist,
contents and play order onto a thumb drive and then play it on another computer
running iTunes. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks.

Re: iTunes playlist question

2014-12-30 Thread Kliph
Of course there is. You can do it 2 ways. You can find the playlist in iTunes
and just choose to export it. Or, you could go to your music folder, iTunes,
iTunes media, music, and then find the play list, and copy it to the thumb
drive. HTH

Re: Vlc Player

2014-12-30 Thread Jessica Moss
You can set the option to have that button in the foreground if you don't want
to constantly have to keep going into the menu's. I can't remember exactly how
I did it, but it wasn't there when I first downloaded it, and I looked for it
in the menu's when for some off-the-wall reason, several albums I have were
playing out of order, so wanted to see if my shuffle was turned on, and then
the option to turn it on and off all of a sudden was visible without me having
to go into the menus, but that didn't change the album tracks playing out of
order whether it was on or off.

Netflics site verses iPhone app verses Apple tV

2014-12-30 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Just started my free month of Netflics. Seems like a keeper so far. Thing is,
the site seems a bit jumpy because the page where you're supposed to be able to
search for stuff keeps refreshing. Anybody got any ideas about the best way to
navigate the site on the Mac? So far, Apple TV seems to be the most stable way
to search for, find and play stuff.
Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray

Re: Netflics site verses iPhone app verses Apple tV

2014-12-30 Thread Mary Otten
I have given up on all means of accessing Netflix except AppleTV, which works
wonderfully. I know some say they have good luck with the iOS app. But I can't
get off first base. I can't even get to the search field anymore. As for the
Mac, since mine has been dead now for a little while, out for repair I hope, I
have not had any recent experience. A recent try with an older PC was not
amusingbut Apple TV works really, really well.

Re: iTunes playlist question

2014-12-30 Thread Kristeen Hughes
When I choose the playlist and exported it shows up on my thumb drive is a very
small text file giving information for where each song can be found. If I am on
another computer in someone else's home, how will I ever get those songs to
play?

Also, under my music folder I do not see playlists. I have several, but I only
see folders with artists and under those are albums and under those are songs.

RE: iTunes playlist question

There should be a folder called playlists with in that folder where your
artists are. Unless they have changed this in iTunes 12.

Subject: Re: iTunes playlist question

When I choose the playlist and exported it shows up on my thumb drive is a very
small text file giving information for where each song can be found. If I am on
another computer in someone else's home, how will I ever get those songs to
play?

Also, under my music folder I do not see playlists. I have several, but I only
see folders with artists and under those are albums and under those are songs.

Re: iTunes playlist question

2014-12-30 Thread Phil Halton
As you found out, exporting the playlist will only export the text file
containing the names and locations of the songs, not the actual songs
themselves. And, there are no playlists stored in the media folder.
If you want to copy the actual songs contained in the playlist onto another
drive, like a thumb drive or something, do the following.
1, Go into your playlist in iTunes and select all the songs with command + A.
2, Copy the selected songs with command + C.
3, switch to the finder and highlight the folder/drive where you want to copy
the song files and paste them with Command + V. Make sure you’re actually
positioned on the folder/drive by either opening it (when in list view), or
with the folder/drive highlighted ( when in column view).

Now, on the other computer, you can then open and play the folder of song files
in iTunes, or in any other MP3 player for that matter.

external hard drive

2014-12-30 Thread Lorie McCloud
I’m trying to access my external hard drive. it’s a phantom. I’ve been in it
before but I can’t seem to get in there now. I turn it on and although I heard
“Phantom hd volume” I can’t get it to open. quick look and preview opened at
different times but that’s not what I want. should it be in my desktop folder
or is there something I don’t understand? I don’t have any trouble accessing my
computer’s files and folders.

Thanks.

Are you using the Computer Finder item? In Finder, hit command-shift-c; that
will open a list of all connected drives. Find yours there and open it like any
folder.

having 2 windows open when moving files

2014-12-30 Thread Lorie McCloud
I have my view set to list because it’s easier to tell where I am. this
requires me to back out of a drive closing windows as I go. is it possible to
have a window open in the drive I’m copying from as well as in the one I’m
copying to? several times I’ve thought I picked up a file and when I went to
drop it in the other drive, nothing copied.it seems to copy
from the hard drive to the Mac but not the other way around.

I tried to open up a new finder window but it opens on top of my other window
and I can’t navigate init or, using it.

Thanks.

Re: having 2 windows open when moving files

2014-12-30 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,

If I'm in one drive or folder I use command+n to open a new window. You can
then either open another folder on the same drive or another drive. I then use
command+` to switch back and forth between the two open folders. You should be
able to copy and paste back and forth using the normal copy and paste commands
at that point.
