Re: Cursor tracking problems when using my trackpad

2014-11-10 Thread BobH.
My train of thought on this is... the track pad is an inexact science and
the least touch before making a gesture is enough to send focus to where the
touch on screen was. Flicking is only ever from that point. I soon gave up
the track pad too, while I have a keyboard and use VO-Arrows or related
common navigation methods.

Subject: Cursor tracking problems when using my trackpad

Hello all,
in the past week or so I am being driven mad by VO when using my trackpad.
When flicking right either in Safari or on my desktop I have the following
problem.
VO will read something else on the screen before where I am. EG if on the
desktop I will hear Macintosh HD as I flick through the icons then the one I
am on. If in Safari if flicking down through headings I may hear what page I
am on then the heading. Cursor tracking says it is on. It is obvious that
some cursor is just not following. It is so bad I am giving up reading
newspaper. I can jump to headings with QuickNav on but when I flick through
an article it then reads some other part of the screen.
Does anybody else have this problem? If so do you have a fix.
I am using latest Safari and Yosemite.
Thanks for any help.
Max

The latest version of Microsoft Outlook appears to be accessible

2014-11-10 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello all,

When Microsoft released a new version of Outlook for Mac last week I was
as curious as anyone else to know whether or not it would be fully usable
by VoiceOver users. Eventually, I just decided to install it and give it a
go. I am very happy to report that my first impressions have been very
positive. I will admit that Microsoft Outlook has crashed a few times and
is sometimes sluggish, but that is probably because for a first test I
chose to open a huge data set from Outlook for Windows.

I have by no means played with all or even most of Outlook for Mac’s
features, but I can confirm that the following is working just fine with
VoiceOver:
Editing a contact
- Composing an Email (like this one) and moving through the text
- Setting up an appointment in the calendar and finding it in the default
month calendar view
- Navigating your folder list, and the list of messages
- Expanding and collapsing folders, as well as messages in conversation
view
- Editing preferences and Email accounts
- Using the search feature to search through messages and browsing the
list of results
- Opening and reading plain text and HTML messages
- Hearing formatting (for example, Outlook is generating a bulleted list
for me and VoiceOver is announcing that; voiceOver also correctly reports
that Microsoft Office’s default font of Calibri is in use)
There is much more to play with but I am very favourably impressed. Let us
hope that the rest of the forthcoming Office for Mac suite is as
accessible as this. And for everyone with an Office 365 subscription of
some kind, you might want to give this a try.

I will admit though that I’ve really grown to love the mail, contacts,
calendars, notes and reminders apps in OS X and will continue to use them,
for now, for my day to day activities.

RE: The latest version of Microsoft Outlook appears to be accessible

2014-11-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Grant,

Thank you so much for this report on Outlook.

I have two questions:

1.
Can you please report on how well VoiceOver and Outlook do with reading
messages in a threaded view?

2.
If one does not have a Microsoft 365 account, can one still purchase Outlook as
a stand alone solution on the Mac?

Thank you again for taking the time to let us know about MS Outlook for the Mac.

Unfortunately, at least to judge from this message, it appears to use the same
brain-damaged encoding of long lines as employed by Apple Mail. Boo!

Re: Airdrop again.

2014-11-10 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
Go to apple/about this computer and all shall be revealed, methinks.
In the window that pops up when you hit ”about this computer” from the apple
menu there’s among other things a button that says ”system report”. Press this
button and in the dialog that comes up you will find a lot of info about your
system, your computer and what it supports. In my case, it revealed that i have
an iMac from mid 2011 and what kind of memory etc it has and then there’s a
section about bluetooth. For my machine it says that Bluetooth low energy is
not supported and that Handoff is not supported either. Now someone mentioned
on the list a couple days back that in order for Airdrop to work between a Mac
and an iDevice, Bluetooth low energy has to be supported, which isn’t the case
on my Mac. Check what your machine reports about these things.
Hope that helps.

Re: latest osx upgrade

2014-11-10 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
Of course, then there are those of us who upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion
three days after getting her Mac. That was me, and I had an immediate
improvement of mail, especially. So the question is, in my mind here, whether
it would benefit you more in the long run. I have a blind friend who got her
Mac before Yosemite came out as well, and in her case, I haven’t suggested that
she upgrade yet because her needs are pretty simple for the most part. She
jumped right into Safari like three days after getting her Mac. From what I
gather, however, your needs seem to be more complex and it sounds like you have
experience in something with computers I know absolutely nothing about. Just
some of my thoughts on the matter, and others will need to comment on whether
you would gain more from an upgrade.

a few questions

2014-11-10 Thread deedra waters
I’ve been looking on applevis for an answer to this and i’m probably missing
it. Are there accessible chat cliejnts to handle things like jabber and
googletalk?

Also does anyone know of an installer for mac ports for OS X 10.10? I’m only
seeing installers for the older versions.

I’ve not had a whole lot of luck getting the terminal to play nice. yet are
there any options i need to set up to make it act better?

Thanks for all the help i’m loving this macbook air.

It's listed in step three:

https://www.macports.org/install.php

Seems to work fine although I did have to uninstall and re-install my
port library. Apparently there is a change in the compiler tool chain
that makes some packages no longer function and the easiest way to fix
it is to start over. Do the usual selfupdate and update outdated. If it
completes without errors then none of the packages you have are effected.

Re: blu-rays and mac osX

2014-11-10 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
BluRay discs are encrypted so you'll first have to get the file off
there otherwise no other tools can touch the files. Makemkv seems to be
one of the tools folks use to do that but I don't know how accessible it
is or what you do to process the files to strip out the audio once
you've ripped them off the bluray. You can download the tool and use it
free for 30 days. Note that most BluRays are many GB (30-40) so you'll
need a good bit of disk space.

iTunes extras again

2014-11-10 Thread Joe Quinn
i have some movies redeemed via digital copy, toy story trilogy, and ride
along, just to name a few, that when i see them in iCloud, they say the name of
the movie, followed by “iTunes extras booklet.” when i play the movie however,
i get the whole movie, an no way of viewing the extras! and i want to stream
and/or download the extras on the mac. is there a way to do this? usually
I’dhave the movie and then the extras as a separate option, but this time
they’re bundled as one. thanks for any help you can give!

Hmm. What about the command line interface? Docs are here:

http://www.makemkv.com/developers/usage.txt

App is here:

/Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/makemkvcon

So you should be able to do everything in terminal that the GUI can do.

Re: The latest version of Microsoft Outlook appears to be accessible

2014-11-10 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello Mark,

I haven’t found any reference to Microsoft selling standalone licenses for
This version of Outlook. They seem to really be pushing Office 365, though
it is possible
that there is some other way to get it.

In terms of browsing through mail in conversation view, I’ll admit that
unless you interact with the messages table and move through a specific
column or columns of choice, the verbosity is a little verbose because
Outlook has numerous columns that it displays and VoiceOver reads all of
them, including the column headers, with a pause for thought in between
each spoken chunk. However, you can hear the subject of the thread as well
as its authors in a manner similar to how the stock mail app works. You
can expand and collapse a conversation using the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW KEYS
or by using VO+SPACE on the “disclosure triangle” in column one. I love
how in the stock mail app, you can press ENTER on a conversation to open a
view where all the messages are displayed. That isn’t how Outlook works;
pressing ENTER on an individual message will open it as you might expect,
but pressing ENTER on the conversation itself will open all the messages
in separate windows.

Keep in mind that there are literally pages and pages of options that can
be adjusted in Outlook to control its behaviour, and I don’t pretend to be
an expert on Outlook for Mac yet, quite the contrary. However, I did want
to let people know that it appears to be accessible. :)

I’ll update the list with anything else that I discover, and if you have
any other questions or things you would like me to try, feel free to let
me know.

It is very possible that this behaviour can be adjusted; I have no idea.
All that matters is that my recipients are able to read my messages, which

easily duable because the eject button F4 does that but when I don't
have this Hims device with me how can I make the onscreen keyboard
