Re: Airdrop again.

2014-11-08 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi, Airdrop doesn’t work properly on my mid 2011 IMac either. I have Do not
disturb off or rather i have it in scheduled mode so it starts at 9.30 PM CST
and goes until 9.00 AM CST but even when do not disturb is off, nothing happens
and i can’t even tell my mac to communicate with all or only with older macs,
there’s simply no button there, only a text that says that in order to
communicate with another Mac i have to tell the other mac owner to go to the
finder and turn on airdrop there.
On my Macbook Air from 2012 however, Airdrop works with no problems whatsoever.

Re: Airdrop again.

2014-11-08 Thread Alex Hall
Okay, have Airdrop on the iPad enabled, and set to "everyone" just in case. Now
find the zip file on the Mac, vo-shift-m, open the Share menu, and choose
Airdrop.

As to supported Macs, Google has tons of lists that will tell you if your
device can handle Airdrop.

I was wondering does Firefox work for us? If not what other browsers besides
Safari do? I have a college web site I go to crashing out on me when I put

Re: bootcamp question

2014-11-08 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I know there have been some recent posts about bootcamp and startup so I won’t
answer those. If you want or security of FileVault for your Macintosh disk than
every time the computer power is turned on, you need to login via File Vault
because the encryption key for the disk must be opened. Note that file vault
does not really protect your system if it is running and I believe sleep mode
is also non-protected.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: bootcamp question

2014-11-08 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Sorry, now I remember what else I wanted to say.

If you turn off file vault, then the macintosh will start decrypting your
files, and once that process is done then the Macintosh will prompt for
UserName / Password after the OS is running so that VoiceOve and other services
are available on the login screen.
HTH

Re: Airdrop again.

2014-11-08 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Could this type of transfer also be done with the new iCloud functionality?
Perhaps we could get VoiceStream developers to create a Macintosh version that
allows continuity transactions to transition reading from Macintosh to IOS. I
have read a bit about the process continuity uses to transition from machine
to machine and certainly one of the requirements was that applications on both
sides of the transfer require the same Vendor code.

Best wishes,

Re: Big news for all Microsoft Office and or iOS fans!

2014-11-08 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello Chris and list,

It’s obvious that Microsoft has put some thought into how VO accessibility
should be implemented throughout this suite, so I hate to be too picky.
Nevertheless, here are my first impressions of the iPhone version of Microsoft
Office. I do not currently have access to the iPad version so I cannot comment
on its functionality. I do, however, have an Office 365 subscription, so I have
full access to the suite.

In the iPhone version of Word, I haven’t figured out how to do too much beyond
basic text editing. For example, I am unable to work with tables as I can in
Pages. I also found that navigating by line with VO could sometimes be
unreliable in that VO would stop speaking the contents of the line under the
cursor, but I am also experiencing this problem in some other apps while
running iOS 8.1 so it may not be a Microsoft Word issue.

Microsoft Excel seems to be the most accessible app in the suite. There are
custom voiceover hints built-in as well as a custom gesture: a two-finger
double-tap to open an edit menu for a cell. I am quite impressed with my first
tour of Excel.

Microsoft PowerPoint has clearly also had some accessibility built in, but on
my iPhone 5s running iOS 8.1 it simply crashes too much to be usable. It is
clear that both playing and editing presentations have great potential to work
with VO as most of the controls speak well. I was able to open a large
PowerPoint presentation and move through the slides and see the content of each
slide. I was also able to select one of the text boxes in my presentation to
begin editing it. Unfortunately, before I do much I am usually faced with the
app crashing. At that point you have to re-launch the app and start afresh,
only to find, at least on my device, that it crashes again before too long.

These apps integrate with a number of places for storing files including
Dropbox, which I am very impressed with. The menu options also appear to be
quite accessible. In short, the apps have a great foundation and with some
improvements may turn out to be a wonderful productivity suite, but I can’t
rely on them yet, with the exception, perhaps, of Excel.

Hi all
Yes, Microsoft Office is now available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad at a
right price, absolutely free! You can download the individual apps Word, Excel

very accessible! I tried both Word and Excel and can get the basics at least
done with full VoiceOver support! I congratulate Microsoft on their efforts,
and hope they keep it this way and is a good sign for things to come, such as
an accessible Office for OS X.
Enjoy!

2014-11-08 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Deedra. I have no problems here with Yosemite, just the occasional slow
down. It's what you're comfortable to use that matters. People might recommend
though that since you're new to the Mac, you shouldn't upgrade and then be
learn be forced to learn another operating system.

Re: latest osx upgrade

2014-11-08 Thread Phil Halton
Deirdre, there's absolutely no need to upgrade to Yosemite yet. I'm using
Mavericks and intend to stay with it for a while at least until Yosemite is
upgraded and some of the bugs are ironed out. Again, don't bother worrying
about upgrading from Mavericks yet.

Re: does Firefox work for us

2014-11-08 Thread Scott Berry
Jonothan,

Does Firefox bring up a blank window once installed and ran? Usually in
Windows, for example, it will bring up a page about Firefox itself. I can
certainly try it again. I have reported this error to Apple twice already. I
am going to have to do this again.

I have a dangling 100MB partition. I’d like to add it to my Yosemite

Re: does Firefox work for us

2014-11-08 Thread Michael Marshall
i spoke to a developer in the accessibility Department of Firefox and basically
he told me that Windows development has priority at Firefox in terms of
accessibility at the moment.
Personally I do not think Firefox will ever be accessible on the Mac.
Talking of browsers and accessibility has anyone noticed the reduction in
accessibility of google crome under the new mac OS? it just seems harder to
move around pages mind you, I think in some small ways safari has gone
backwards, an example you ask? Try hitting command left bracket to go back
a page, Safari never remembers your position and Voice over talks a lot of
nonsense.

Re: latest osx upgrade

2014-11-08 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I upgraded right away and had no issues at all. It’s entirely your choice
though. You don’t “have to” upgrade if you prefer to wait. There is nothing
other than promotions and such from within the AppStore that suggest you
upgrade, but, you decide. I doubt anything would “break” in your upgrade but
you could find a few things to be a little different, most things in your day
to day use have pretty close to the same feel though.

Decibel from sbooth.org

2014-11-08 Thread christopher hallsworth

http://sbooth.org/Decibel/#decibel

What is Decibel?

Decibel is an audio player tailored to the particular needs of audiophiles.

Decibel supports all popular lossless and lossy audio formats including FLAC,
Ogg Vorbis, Musepack, WavPack, Monkey's Audio, Speex, True Audio, Apple
Lossless, AAC, MP3, WAVE and AIFF.

For lossless formats such as FLAC and WAVE, and for Ogg Vorbis and specially
tagged MP3 files, Decibel supports gapless playback with seamless transitions
between tracks.

Decibel processes all audio using 64-bit floating-point precision, providing
the highest possible playback quality for files sampled at all bit depths.

Decibel has an intentionally minimal user interface designed to be instantly
intuitive and non-intrusive:

For audiophile users desiring more control over their audio, Decibel can take
exclusive control of the output device (using hog mode) and send audio in the
device's native format. Additionally, Decibel can automatically adjust the
output device's sample rate to that of the playing track, preventing audio
quality degradation associated with software sample rate conversion.

Finally, Decibel can load and play files entirely in memory, eliminating audio
glitching associated with disk access.

Download

The current version of Decibel is 1.3.1, released on 22 June 2014.

Decibel.zip (23 MB)

Purchase

The full version of Decibel is available for $33. Orders are fulfilled through
FastSpring, Feisty Dog's e-commerce provider.

Release Notes

You may view the release notes in HTML.

Requirements

Decibel requires Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) or later.
