Re: Typing mode question

2014-09-19 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Do you know if you can change any speech settings in Fleksy such as typing echo
or something? As it is right now mine only speaks words after having typed them
and then it's too late to change. I made a total mess on Facebook today trying
to type with Fleksy.

If you've got a *really* good grasp on the keyboard, or have some usable

Essentially, when you tap a key, the key types. And by 'tap", I mean a
real tap, with absolutely *no* extra time from when your finger makes
contact to when you let go. This means that the keyboard acts exactly like
it does for sighted folks when VO is off. However, if you hold your finger
on a key, it will speak, just as though you had traditional or touch
typing enabled instead. That way, you could use split tap if you really
 wanted.

For my part, touch typing still works great.

Now...if I could just figure out how to run Fleksy.

I think i saw a tweet somewhere that an update is coming at the end of this
month. Whether it fixes any vo issues though i don't know since we blind are a
minority and therefore the bugs we encounter have less priority. Having said
that though, i'm convinced the bugs we have encountered will be fixed sooner or
later. I haven't seen any bugs that haven't been fixed, how long time it takes

a cautionary word on iBooks

2014-09-19 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Forgive the cross-post, but I learned something last night in my adventures
with iBooks that I thought would be of interest to members of both lists.

Once you delete an iBook from your Mac, there is no way to get it back, unless
someone from Apple reposts it for download. Personally I think this is
absolutely ridiculous, if I own it, I should be able to re-download it whenever
I bloody well please, but that's the way it is. Kindle is looking better and
better every day.

Another thing I've learned is that the books that are downloaded to your
i-devices are linked to whatever is on your computer, not to the cloud. I
still haven't gotten my books back, but I spent an hour and a half on the phone
with tech support, and they insisted that I had to re-download everything onto
my computer. So far that hasn't helped.

Anyway, I thought you all would want to know about the issue with
re-downloading.
Best,
Donna

an ibooks question

2014-09-19 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

In follow up to my last message, I happily still have my deleted iBooks in my
trash, so I'd like to try and restore them to iBooks that way. I see the
numbered folders that contain each of the books. To what folder do I need to
copy them in order for them to be restored to iBooks?
thank you,
Donna

KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries

Apparently the app is $100.

CB*
*

*Baltimore, Maryland (September 18, 2014):* The National Federation of
the Blind
,
the nation's leading advocate for access to print by the blind, has
applauded the release of KNFB Reader
,
a new app for the iPhone and other Apple iOS devices, which uses the
phone's camera and state-of-the-art optical character recognition (OCR)
technology to give the blind instant access to the contents of print
materials. Members of the National Federation of the Blind have worked
with K-NFB Reading Technology, Inc., which developed the app along with
Sensotec, Inc. KNFB Reader is now available in the iTunes app store.

Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said:
"The National Federation of the Blind has been involved for forty years
in the development of technology that helps blind people to acquire
access to the various print materials that we all encounter from day to
day. Ever since our first collaboration with Ray Kurzweil to develop the
Kurzweil Reading Machine, which was the size of a household appliance,
we have been interested in the development of better and more portable
reading technology. Print on office documents, flyers, letters, menus,
labels, and throughout our environment is still a part of everyday life,
even with the increased electronic transmission of documents. Now
revolutionary technology that resides on the phones that many of us
carry each day

provides instant access to the printed word. We can hear our mail or the
menu at our favorite restaurant spoken with the iPhone's built-in
text-to-speech technology, or read it in Braille with a refreshable
Braille display. This app will fundamentally change the everyday lives
of many blind people, helping us to get the information we need and live
the lives we want."

Re: an ibooks question

2014-09-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Instead of putting them directly back into the folder, either copy and paste
them to the Desktop then use the Add to Library feature under the File menu
within iBooks itself or try a VO-shift-m on the individual book from within the
Trash and see if there is the "Put Back" option.

RE: anyone know about problems with iBooks in IOS 8?

Hi that is strange I updated yesterday and have had no problems with I books
but will look to see if there is a update for ibooks

Subject: anyone know about problems with iBooks in IOS 8?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about bugs with the latest iBooks?
I upgraded to IOS 8 last night, and installed the update to iBooks. Now, I
can see the publisher's blurb for my books when I click on the Purchased
Tab, but that's all I can see. When I switch to my books, the list is
empty, despite the fact that I have several downloaded. It doesn't matter
whether I select My Bookshelf, Titles, or Authors, I see nothing. I had my
sighted husband look at my phone, and he confirmed that the books are not
showing up on the screen at all. Anyone else had this issue?
Thanks,
Donna

Re: a cautionary word on iBooks

2014-09-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Donna,

this process works for me to download deleted purchased iBooks. When in iBooks,

* Under the View menu, make sure the "Show Purchases in iCloud" item is
checked. This should allow the iBooks app to see iBooks you've purchased but
that don't reside on your Mac.
* If you see the iBook you wish re-downloaded, arrow to it then press VO-cmd-f5
to make sure that the mouse is routed to the VO-cursor.
* Hold down the ctrl key and click your mouse or Trackpad. This will bring up
the Contextual menu. The Download option should be there.

The caveat here is that if the iBook is no longer available in the Store, then
you're options are more limited. That is, I'm guessing that the Download
option will not work as the content is no longer available through iTunes, thus
it is unable to be downloaded. If you were lucky enough to have a copy on one
of your iDevices as well, you could probably connect to your iDevice either
with USB or via WiFi, and transfer your purchases from the iDevice over to your
Mac.

HTH.

Re: anyone know about problems with iBooks in IOS 8?

2014-09-19 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Donna and others,
I would like clarification on something. Donna, when you said that you lost
your books and Apple say I have a book on my Mac and the same book on my iPad.
I decide I don't want the book on my Mac, so I take it off the Mac. Does that
mean it goes away from the iPad to? Thank you for clarification.
Mary
told you that they were gone for good unless Apple put them back, how does that
relate to the following scenario?

It sometimes stops working correctly. Try restarting VO and if that doesn't
work it may take a restart of Mail or the Mac.

Re: how to expand a list with vo?

2014-09-19 Thread Alex Hall
Right arrow, as you've been doing. This will sometimes stop working, and here's
what I do:
* find a conversation and hit right arrow, it should make only an error tone.
* Trun VoiceOver off.
* Hit down arrow, then up arrow, to get back to your conversation.
* hit right arrow once or twice. You should not hear an error tone this time.
* Turn VoiceOver back on, and proceed as normal. This only happens once every
few weeks at most for me.

Hi Mary,

I'm still kind of confused about this, but that would seem to be the case. I
just got off the phone with tech support again, and the first thing he had me
do was re-download everything onto my computer. I'll do some further

Hi Mary and all,

Well, I just deleted a book from my Mac, and that did not remove it from my

wondering why the tech support people were so obsessed with re-downloading the
books onto my Mac. Weird.

An easier way.

1. Turn Voice OVer off.

2. Press Command+right arrow after about three seconds.

3. Turn on Voice OVer.

resolution of ibooks issue

2014-09-19 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Again, excuse cross-post, but want to provide info to both lists in case anyone
needs it.

I called tech support again this morning, and finally got someone who knew what
they were doing. I don't understand why, but I was never able to re-download
books from within the iBooks app, I had to do it by going into iTunes, iTunes
store, and using the download all button. That got all books back onto my
computer. We then went over to my phone, and the books then showed up on my
phone. I'm still a little unclear about what the issue was. When I first went
into iBooks on the phone, PDFs was selected, but that had not been the case
before--I'm sure of this, because I tried selecting and unselecting it when I
was working on this yesterday and nothing changed, I'm as suing I'd just left
it selected after one of the many things I tried before.. But this time when I
selected all books, my books were displayed properly. So I'm assuming that
re-downloading in iTunes did something, but I don't really know what.

So, I know they're not conclusive steps, and I wish I had more definitive
advice to offer, but I would say that if you encounter this problem, try
re-downloading through iTunes. then see if that makes them show up on the
phone.

Cheers,
Donna

thanks for this. I did not have the Show Purchases in iCloud checked. I've

 Hi all,

Forgive the cross-post, but I learned something last night in my
adventures with iBooks that I thought would be of interest to members of
 both lists.

Once you delete an iBook from your Mac, there is no way to get it back,
unless someone from Apple reposts it for download. Personally I think
this is absolutely ridiculous, if I own it, I should be able to
re-download it whenever I bloody well please, but that's the way it is.
Kindle is looking better and better every day.

Another thing I've learned is that the books that are downloaded to your
i-devices are linked to whatever is on your computer, not to the cloud. I
still haven't gotten my books back, but I spent an hour and a half on the
phone with tech support, and they insisted that I had to re-download
everything onto my computer. So far that hasn't helped.

Anyway, I thought you all would want to know about the issue with
 re-downloading.
 Best,
 Donna

Hello, do you mean, for example, if you are focusing on a mail conversation

Hope I'm understanding what you want to accomplish. :)

iTunes playback options

2014-09-19 Thread Traci Duncan
Ok, I feel like a dork for asking this, but (shrugs) I don't know how to fix it.

I've been listening to iTunes on my Mac lately via bluetooth speaker, and I
notice my playlists never play in the order I think they will, or sometimes
they loop around and play again. Where are settings that I may look at to see
what's up? I want to tap the first track to play and listen on through. No
shuffle, no repeat.

Thank you,
Traci

Re: iTunes playback options

2014-09-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

When in your Playlist, Interact with the list of songs. Focus on the song you
wish to start from then press return. This will start playing the song that
had focus. Stop Interacting with that list and locate the LCD panel, then
Interact with it. In that panel, there are two buttons you need to look at.
One toggles between "Repeat All", "repeat One" and "Do Not Repeat" and the
other toggles between "Shuffle" and "Do Not Shuffle". The thing to consider
here is that the button is asking you what you want to do, not the current
state.

So, if you don't want it to shuffle, then the button will likely be showing in
"Shuffle" action, so that if you press it, shuffling will begin. If it reads
"Do Not Shuffle", just press on it and your music will no longer be shuffled.

For the repeating, you can toggle through until you hear "Do Not Repeat" and
press on that one or if you hear that the button reads "repeat All", then it is
already in the "do Not Repeat" state and pressing the "repeat All" will cause
it to do exactly that.

Hopefully, this wasn't too confusing. It works for my brain, but I'm the one
saying it.

Later...

Re: Question about Apple TV

2014-09-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It's been a while since I've set one up, so, hopefully I'm not missing anything
here.

If your Apple TV is brand new out of the box, or if it has been reset to
Factory defaults, then plug in your HDMI cable into whatever piece of equipment
you wish it connected through followed by plugging in the power cord. The
Apple TV will get to a point where it asks you about choosing a language. At
this point, you should be able to triple -click the Select button (centre of
the big button on the remote) and VO will start talking. Once VO is on, you're
able to do the entire setup on your own. If it is a second hand Apple TV, it
can be done, it just takes a little more work.

Later...

Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Donna Goodin
Kevin, can you say more? I'm kind of on the fence about whether or not to
purchase it, but so far I'm not completely happy with either textGrabber or
Prizmo. I think the place where I'm going wrong with both those apps is the
positioning of the camera. Does KNFB Reader make that easier?
Thanks,
Donna

Re: recommendation for braille device

2014-09-19 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
There are also the handytech devices.
Note that they have very special designed cells for best reading experiences.
They're concave so it can take a while to learn to use them.
Some including me does like these types of cells and some don't.
Note though that thay have a display basic braille which doesn't have these
concave cells.
Its called the basic braille as i mentioned above and is their less expensive
model.

Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Kevin Mattingly
I've only tried to read a couple of things. I'd let it read a guitar strings
package and it read just about everything on there that I could ever want it
too. I had it read a check and it read the check label, the description of the
pattern based on the fact that it was a check with kiss on it. It just seems
like it just gets it. I agree that the cameras placement has been a pain with
other apps. I used it to read the screen on my refrigerator too. It did a
pretty good job there as well.

Re: Question about Apple TV

2014-09-19 Thread Joe Quinn
Actually, it's the rightmost button on the apple Remote thqt you'd triple
press. Also, if your Apple TV is brand-new, and you plug it in. When it turns
on, it should eventually come up with a voice telling you to triple tap that
button.

Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Donna,
I'm not Kevin but bought the app last night. On my first picture, I got 100 per
cent accuracy of an entire credit card statement which obviously has lots of
numbers and weird abbreviations. I spent about a minute lining the document up
and then took one picture and it was perfect! I never had anything close to
that with Prismo, Text Grabber or Text Detective. I rarely got the whole
document there, whereas KNFB Reader helps you line it up if you want it to.
It also does images and pdf images, so it is definitely worth it for me. I'm
now sorry I wasted the money on those others, but it was all there was at the
time and they served their purpose. KNFB Reader is now the only OCR app on my
phone.
It takes about 2 seconds from when the picture is taken to when it starts
reading, and I'm using an iPhone 5 at this stage.

Good luck with your decision

synching content from my mac to somone elses idevice

2014-09-19 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List I need to synch some non drm mp3 files to someone else's idevice. I
know I can sign out of itunes and sign in with there apple id, but I don't
want to do this because I don't want to mess up my itunes match and would like
to keep their library separate from mine. Is it possible to have two versions
of itunes running on the same mac, accessing different itunes libraries, and
signed in with different apple ids and if so how is this achieved.

Many Thanks Lee

2014-09-19 Thread Rob

Hi,
I dont know a lot about iTunes, but it may say that the iPhone is
synched with another computer, and all data will be deleted.

I dont think your friend will like that.
You can use the app for the mac called iTools.
It will do just what you need.
I downloaded it from
www.macupdate.com
This is just my 2 cents!

Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Frankly, I could not agree more!!! My flat bed scanning days are through: or
just about anyhow. I never got such good results with the other OCR apps. Not
even with Abby Fine Reader Text Grabber, which is kinda sorta okay. The KNFB
reader is where it's at if you want it to be both fast and accurate. Yes, it
does help you angle the camra just right. I didn't realize, until I started
using the KNFB reader app that I was always angling the camra lens much too far
upward.

Sincerely,
the Constantly Barefooted Ray, Still a very happy Mac and iphone user!

Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Krister Ekstrom
The interesting thing about all this is that according to the app itself, it
uses Abbyy Finereaders OCR engine and Textgrabber is actually very fast when it
comes to recognizing the text, but it's much harder to get a good result.
It makes me wonder how the IPhone app compares to the old Nokia app, which
didn't impress me much.

RE: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

Since you brought up the topic of scanning a credit card bill, I have a
question for you and anyone else that has the app. Can the KNFB app read the
back of a credit card where the 3 digit security code is or for that matter
scan the from where the account number and expiration date is? This would be
quite nifty if the KNFB Reader app could do that. Lately, more and more
companies are asking for the 3 digit code, but each time you receive a new
card in the mail, those 3 security digit code numbers change. I look forward
to hearing from those who have the app regarding this.

Thanks.

Best,
Eileen

Donna,
I'm not Kevin but bought the app last night. On my first picture, I got 100
per cent accuracy of an entire credit card statement which obviously has
lots of numbers and weird abbreviations. I spent about a minute lining the
document up and then took one picture and it was perfect! I never had
anything close to that with Prismo, Text Grabber or Text Detective. I rarely
got the whole document there, whereas KNFB Reader helps you line it up if
you want it to.
It also does images and pdf images, so it is definitely worth it for me. I'm
now sorry I wasted the money on those others, but it was all there was at
the time and they served their purpose. KNFB Reader is now the only OCR app
on my phone.
It takes about 2 seconds from when the picture is taken to when it starts
reading, and I'm using an iPhone 5 at this stage.

Good luck with your decision

Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread BobH.
Mrs tells me the abbyy Finereader app is itself available and free; over
here at least.

Could be a question of accessibility. Will have to go look, but all the
other helpp may well yet be worth the cost.

Re: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Donna Goodin
That was amazing!!! I just downloaded it, and on the second try, I got a
nearly perfect scan of a page from a novel. Looking forward to trying it on
more complex documents, but right now I'd say it's well worth the money. For
us, especially, it's an incredibly useful thing to be able to do--and do well--
with your phone.

RE: KNFB Reader iPhone App

2014-09-19 Thread Jesus Garcia
I agree this is by far the most expensive app I have ever purchased for any
of my apple devices. However well worth the price, considering how much I
paid for the original KNFB nosier phone reader and never regretted doing so,
this is amazing. I am certain there are going to be a few areas where I will
want changes, but hey this is the first release. I recommend this software
without any hesitation.

Hi Lisette,

Wow, that's impressive. I think the podcast pretty much sold me, but your
report was the last straw. It's great to finally have an app that can give
us reliable OCR wherever we are. thanks for sharing your experience.

at the time and they served their purpose. KNFB Reader is now the only OCR

I've got it installed on my iPad 2 32G; my iPhone 5 is defunct in the extreme.
I see changes to notification center and app switcher, and can record and send
audio but not video iMessages. What else should I look for, and what VO
improvements if any are there? When I try to upgrade to iCloud Drive, it told
me that my Macbook Pro would have to be updated to Yosemite. I didn't even
know Yosemite is out yet? Where's the Time Travel button?

Double tap and hold on the "attach media" button. Wait for the alert to appear,
or, some say, you can slide your finger right while holding down to start
recording. I haven't figured it all out fully yet,but that will get you started.

2014-09-19 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Donna. I am really interested in this, as I have a whole lot of iBooks
on my iPad, and I have heard that it is much better on Yosemite then it is on
Mavericks. So I was looking forward to trying out some books when Yosemite
comes out. However, if it means my iPad is going to get messed up, I will pass.

 Thanks,
 Donna

Re: anyone know about problems with iBooks in IOS 8?

2014-09-19 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Mary,

I'm not sure what messed up my library. I'm assuming it was the upgrade to IOS
8, but Wayne said he saw these issues in IOS 7. So, long and short, I wouldn't
shy away from Yosemite. What I went through was enormously frustrating, but I
did finally get my books back. Also, as you have no doubt seen, there are
others who have not experienced this issue.

Alex and Rachel,
To Alex. You probably have your speech rate set higher than normal
human speech so you might not know when system related events is

So per Rachel's suggestion, I went into system prefs, dictation and
speech, and changed system voice to Samantha (I am using Alex as the
normal voice). So far she is not speaking to me. She certainly is not at

Can't Connect to iPhone Via Blutooth

2014-09-19 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi guys. Since Bill and Hank started a thread on how to make calls using the
Mac, I'm having a problem. I'm using iOS8 and the Yosemite beta, so
everything's in place. I had this working last night just fine, I was making
calls and everything. But just now I found out that the Mac isn't connected to
BluTooth, and when I try to connect, it reports that the network is
unavailable, which it isn't because BluTooth is on on my iPhone. So I tried
rebooting my Mac, still nothing. So I went to system preferences on the Mac and
the BluTooth setting on my iPhone and I told both devices to forget one
another. I successfully paired them back again, but when I tell my iPhone to
connect to my Mac, I get a message saying that it's not supported and my only
option is to forget the device. So yeah, I'm a little PO'd and I could use any
advice you guys could offer.
