how can I best set up a server?

2014-09-06 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

I have a great number of Dutch radio plays, that I collected over the last 25
years, that I'd like to share over the internet with a small group of very
interested people. I once had an ftp server under windows, but that software is
hopelessly outdated now, and I'd like not to use windows anyway because I now
have 2 macs in my home, which is why I'm asking here. I'll describe what I'm
hoping to do below.

The folders I would like to share out, reside on different drives. In my
windows server software, I could create path mappings to deal with that. The
windows server had some 90 members, each with their own user account, password
and privileges. That was very handy, because for a few very close folks, I
could allow them access to more material, and I myself could even add material
to the server remotely.

I once tried setting up an sftp server using just my mac, having enabled
outside access through my router, and then enabling remote login. The big
problem with that method, was that as a client, I could climb up outside my
initial home directory, and do all kinds of stuff all over my system remotely.
Not good if you open that up to the world.

What would you advise me in this situation? How do I make a large file
collection across multiple drives available to the outside world securely,
while having a separate user login account for each user? Do I need to get the
server OS10 software for this purpose? Which server method and software for a
mac would you recommend? I'm very interested to have a server back online,
because my collection keeps growing over time and people keep asking for
access. I'm now dropboxing all the time, but this is way too intensive on my
part. I'd rather have something automated running, from which registered people
can get what they are interested in. Any ideas?

Regards,
Paul.

Cleaning a apple keyboard.

2014-09-06 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I have a mac mini and i have noticed that during the 2 latest weeks i have had
problems with navigating with the keyboard.
This mostly happens on the internet but i have noticed it in mail and other
applications too.
I can press one of the arrow keys and release it but it seems that the keyboard
does not take notice of the releasing of the key.
This doesn't happen all the time while navigating but sometimes.
I can just stop it by pressing any key on the keyboard.
This begun suddenly and i first thought there was something with my braille
display causing the problem.
Then i thought i had some sort of problem with my trackpad.
So i turned off bluetooth but it didn't help.
Now when i am writing this i found out that if i turn off quicknav and use vo
plus the arrow keys this problem does not occur at all.
But i do like quicknav so i really wont turn that off but if thats the
sollution or if i have to use the numpad keys then i just have to stick with
that.
But i don't understand whats going on with voiceover using quicknav.
I wonder if its the keyboard thats been dammaged or dirty.
Hope this is as clear as possible to you.
Its quite hard for me as a non english user to describe.
But please ask if you do not understand.
Thanks.
/A

Re: Truly bizarre problems; can't figure out if it's my MacBook, my iPhone, or Both

2014-09-06 Thread Christine Grassman

An update: Quick synopsis: After some truly strange issues, Apple had me
restore my iPhone to default settings and restore from back-up, but the back-up
went all wrong, with multiple odd messages, no syncing of media content, and so
on.
This morning, on a whim, I tried using a different cable for the sync . . . and
none of the messages popped up, and my content is successfully synced.
The cable appears fine, but who knows?
It is the short USB cable originally provided to sync and charge my iPhone 5.
Interestingly, I cannot find it in the Apple Store; I would like to purchase a
new one, but the short one does not appear to be listed.
I only see 0.5m or longer.

Re: Buying VMFusion 7 Pro.

2014-09-06 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

Another thing is as I understand it that you need the pro version if you e.g.
wants to run linux.

I can really recommend vmware fusion pro it is much faster here than version 6.
I also got the server error the first two times I tried to buy vmware fusion.

My brother helped me to buy it from windows that worked, but I think it was a
coincidence.

Best regards Annie.

Re: spelling checker in Nisus Writer

2014-09-06 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Scot.

I use the spell checker in nisus writer pro really much. You can use the
shift+option + . and use it the normal way. I prefer to use command+shift+comma
and when you have different options you can learn by using command+option+l and
ignor using command+option+i you can also see a list of suggested words by
pressing vo+shift+m. Sometimes you need to turn off voiceOver and turn it on
again. I have not been able to figure out why, and it happens seldom.

Note that it can be usefull to use nisus in draft mode when spell checking.

If you do not understand my explanation, please go back. I could maybe make a
very short demo for you but my english is not perfect.
Best regards Annie.

Re: Keystroke needed to check progress of download

2014-09-06 Thread Alex Hall
There' no single keystroke for this, probably in case you have multiple
downloads at once. Hit cmd-option-l, interact with the table at the end of the
window, interact with the row of the download you're interested in, and you can
find the progress/status. Escape will close this window.

Household iMac

2014-09-06 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

I'm looking for tips on a household sharing a Mac. My guess is having 2 user
accounts may be the easiest way to do this. Am I correct?

There would be 2 primary users, then a guest account. I know for sure we would
want separate iTunes libraries & separate iCloud accounts. We don't share the
same Apple ID... Is 2 users the most effective way to accomplish this.

I appreciate any tips you all might have if you have shared a Mac system
before. Oh btw, only one of us is a VoiceOver user.

;) if we are successful in finding the right Mac for us, just wait until I
bring windows into the mix, because that is my eventual goal. Bootcamp &
windows.

Thanks for your assistance,
Traci

Yes, user accounts are your friend here. You can have each account set up with
its own settings, iCloud login, iTunes library, home folder for storing files,
app settings, and so on. Just be sure to have VO come on at logon, or you will
be stuck trying to log in.

Re: Truly bizarre problems; can't figure out if it's my MacBook, my iPhone, or Both

2014-09-06 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The 0.5 metre cable should be fine. I'm fairly sure that is the one that comes
with your iPhone anyway. The fibres within your old cable may have been kinked
at some point, there could be something amiss with either the lightning or USB
end that may cause this as well. When you're getting messages/sounds like your
unit is losing/regaining connection during the charging cycle, this is a good
indicator of a cable and/or connection problem.

Thanks, and I did that. It worked fine, certainly better than having that awful
Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe has a lot of nerve putting an accessibility option
in their menu on our Mac version that I guess is basically useless, at least I
have not yet been able to get it to work. In Windows it works sometimes.

Yeah, but even if you don't actually run OS X Server, the Server Mini is the
only one with two identical SSDs inside. That's the ideal machine for using
either OS X or bootcamped/virtualised Windows in simultaneously. It works very
well, though I'm now using mine for RAID 0 Linux. :)

2 outputs volume

2014-09-06 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

I'm currently enjoying listening to Pandora on my bluetooth speaker, and
keeping VoiceOver & system sounds in my headset.

I have a question... Is there a way I can adjust the separate volumes? I
needed my VoiceOver a bit louder, but the volume keys adjusted the bluetooth
speaker.

The only way I could figure out so far, was to quickly change output back to my
headset, adjust the volume, then switch back to bluetooth.

Any better solutions? :)

An update: Quick synopsis: After some truly strange issues, Apple had me
restore my iPhone to default settings and restore from back-up, but the
back-up went all wrong, with multiple odd messages, no syncing of media
content, and so on.
This morning, on a whim, I tried using a different cable for the sync . . .
and none of the messages popped up, and my content is successfully synced.
The cable appears fine, but who knows?
It is the short USB cable originally provided to sync and charge my iPhone
5.
Interestingly, I cannot find it in the Apple Store; I would like to purchase
a new one, but the short one does not appear to be listed.
I only see 0.5m or longer.

I remember the users and groups section deals with this pretty well like any

So yes, a good a solution as any.

I don't know if it can be switched off like on Windows, but my "Just Used"

Hi all,

I'm looking for tips on a household sharing a Mac. My guess is having 2
user accounts may be the easiest way to do this. Am I correct?

There would be 2 primary users, then a guest account. I know for sure we
would want separate iTunes libraries & separate iCloud accounts. We don't
share the same Apple ID... Is 2 users the most effective way to accomplish
this.

I appreciate any tips you all might have if you have shared a Mac system
before. Oh btw, only one of us is a VoiceOver user.

;) if we are successful in finding the right Mac for us, just wait until I
bring windows into the mix, because that is my eventual goal. Bootcamp &
windows.

Thanks for your assistance,
Traci

2014-09-06 Thread Cheryl Homiak
If you are talking about logging in, there is an autologin that can be enabled
though it would be considered a security risk. You would have to choose which
user gets the autologin though. You may have to enable this in Security before
you can change it in Users and Groups.

You also can have your users show in the login screen and then you only choose
the user and type in the password for that user. This option is, I believe,
also found in the Users and Groups pane of System Preferences.

Blue-tooth speaker recommendations

2014-09-06 Thread Phil Halton
I have a very specific task requiring a speaker for my iPhone. I wish to play
home-recordings of my instrumental playing loud and clear enough to accompany
myself as if I were playing along with another live player.
I want to be able to play my pre-recorded banjo through a speaker and accompany
that with live playing of a harmony part.
Do you know of, or have a recommendation for a blue-tooth speaker that can
reasonably approximate the sound of an acoustic musical instrument as though
it were being played live?
I don't want to break the bank, and I want something simple, something
relatively uncomplicated without a lot of bells and whistles that will only
clutter up and confuse my little brain.
I was looking at the phillips SB7200 and some others in the apple app, but am
open to anything that will accomplish my specific task at the best price.

How To Enter Multiple Lines in the Messages App

2014-09-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

In the iOS Messages app, one can tap the Return key to enter a multi-line
SMS message.

In the OS X messages application, pressing the enter key, on the keyboard,
will actually send the iMessage.

Is there a way to enter a multi-line iMessage in the OS X Messages
application?

Problems with BRF files in Text Edit, Nisus

2014-09-06 Thread Daniel Smith

Hello fellow visionaries,

I’m having some issues reading a textbook on my braille display, and would
appreciate some feedback. I’m on a Macbook pro with Mavericks, and using a
brand new Focus 40 Blue. Additionally, I’m attempting to read the file on
either Nisus Writer Pro or Text Edit. THe settings under “Braille” in
Voiceover Utility are configured as followed:

Contracted braille is off, 8-dot braille is off, automatic braille
translation is off.

This is my first braille display, and frankly my first time in a few years
reading braille extensively. That being said, due to the availability and
nature of the book (it’s an ancient Greek grammar) the braille display was
the best option.

I’ve found it generally easy to use except when reading the brf file.
Certain things are not being properly converted. For example, the author’s
name, N. Clayton Croy, is display with an n, the number sign, and the
number four, as the print document is displaying “n4”

This trend continues throughout the text, with several things being
displayed seemingly incorrect on the Focus 40.

So I guess there are a few things on the table here:

1. Are my settings properly configured to read brf files?

2. Can brf files be successfully read in a word processor? Is there better
software for such tasks?

3. Is there a particular file type that the brf must be? (right now its
being called a “web archive” by VO).

I very much appreciate all your feedback.

Cheers,

Daniel C. Smith

Re: how can I best set up a server?

2014-09-06 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
The short answer here is that OS X is an excellent platform for running
services, but really lousy for graphical user interfaces for said services.
This ought to be regarded for the failure that it is by some Mac users, but
seemingly isn't, for some reason ...

Depending on your needs, and if network conditions are favourable, in your
situation I would set up PureFTPD with virtual users to implement the solution
that you're looking for. There was a cocoa app called "PureFTPD manager", but
it hasn't been touched in quite a while, by the looks of it. Still, this
cannot be a trivial operation; you need to understand the command line and the
wandering ways of Unix in order to get, compile, install and configure the
server program. I do not believe the included FTP daemon, tnftpd, can help
you; it doesn't support virtual users.

I recently came across a nice app in the MAS called "Simple HTTP Server Pro".
Perhaps, if you don't mind being logged in all the time and binding to
unprivileged ports above 1024, you could do it using HTTP and WebDAV, which is
easier to pass through NAT. But this app only supports one set of
authentication credentials, by the looks of it, so it isn't a complete solution.

So in short, I'm afraid this will be an in-depth challenge for you. Nothing
can substitute for the vertical graphical servers found on Windows. Still, if
you fancy a challenge, go for it.

As to OS X Server, I believe there are good reasons to use it irrespective of
the file sharing services, such as the Caching service, but as far as I can see
the file sharing support in there would not be of any help to you unless you
particularly enjoyed exposing AFP or SMB over the Internet. It could be done,
I suppose, if you had the gall, but you'd have to be very careful, and I'm just
not sure it's worth the risk. Many networks in fact block at least SMB, so
you'd be losing your Windows sharers, without a VPN. And NAS products on the
market (including, ironically, Apple's own Time Capsule) might be a better
choice for doing that anyway.

Re: Problems with BRF files in Text Edit, Nisus

2014-09-06 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
You need to change 8 dot braille and see what that does. It is handled
differently by VoiceOver than some other screen readers. So, turn 8 dot braille
on. Then you do the following thing in TextEdit, making sure you make a copy of
your file first in case you mess this up.

Select all your text.
Select all your text with command a.
Press vo m to bring up the menu.
Then right arrow until you hear EDIT.
Go down arrow until you hear transformations. It is close to the last one, so
up arrow might work.
Choose make lower case.
This will take out all the captabbization, but it will not mess up your braille
file. It will read perfectly fine because braille is not dependent upon showing
upper case that way it is in print. You have a few occurences of the dot 7 and
8 like on the er signs, but it will make your file easier to read. Some people
don't care about that, but I do, and if you have not read braille for a while,
I think you will too.

Some of the other settings you have mentioned have nothing to do with display
the braille. For instance, turning automatic translation on and off has to do
with input and not output.

With dots 7 and 8 turned on, you will get what other programs call computer
braille, and that will enable you to display braille correctly. If you were in
a text file and not a braille file, you can turn dots 7 and 8 off and get grade
1 braille. This is on my wish list to get changed in Yosemite, but in the
meantime, you can do these procedures.

You will see control characters at the end of your lines, and you will need to
ignore them. Mavericks does not allow, at least I haven't found it, for you to
turn on and off the displaying of control characters.

Re: Own a Mac? This retooled Windows virus could cripple it

2014-09-06 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
While the backdoor does seem to be real, not sure how often it really
appears in the wild. Wasn't able to turn up any good analysis of the
impact. Here is the source technical article about the back door
software everyone is quoting from:

http://www.fireeye.com/blog/technical/malware-research/2014/09/forced-to-adapt-xslcmd-backdoor-now-on-os-x.html

Of course it's really hard to get objective info on this since all the
experts who know about such things are publishing articles for companies
that sell security software/services. So read on with a grain of salt,
as they say here in the states.
