Never Underestimate the Power of Ethernet

2014-08-30 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

As technology progresses, we sometimes forget that old and boring technology
that got us to where we are today.

With that in mind, I want to share with you that with regards to
manipulating data on my home network, I pretty much stick to WiFi.

However, Today I needed to copy an enormous amount of data from a NAS drive
to one of my computers. Slowly but surely I am removing all data from NAS
for reasons described in prior threads.

So, as I began the copy process, I was told that it would take about 6
hours.

Then, I remembered that along with my new Mac, I purchased a Thunderbolt to
Ethernet adaptor.

Using a wired connection, the same amount of data was transferred in less
than 35 minutes.

So, no matter how much progress we make, let's remember and revere the
old-school style that came before as, in some cases, it's still going
strong.

Happily,

Mark

Re: Never Underestimate the Power of Ethernet

2014-08-30 Thread BobH.
I have to say, I still prefer a wired connection.

The ethernet protocol, or the entire CSMACD concept is an integral part of
the modern methods - wi'fi, bluetooth, USB; it's the only way all the
devices share the medium.

It still is accessible, for the most part. The ID3 editor seems broken, and ou
have to tab through dialogs since, often, VO focus isn't enough to let you edit
text or numbers in text fields, but it is accessible... And free.

I tried the mouse keys approach, but it isn't a fixed distance you have to
move. The mouse is at the end of the folder name, not the beginning, and so
depending on the folder name length, well, you get it.

Re: Never Underestimate the Power of Ethernet

2014-08-30 Thread BobH.
You can get a dedicated rj45 lead, with a cross-over between two particular
wires; but you can plug computers back-to-back if you fiddle with the right
settings on each pc. You have to enable a server mode and allowed protocols;
not done for too long, so can't be more specific.

But between PC's, what's wrong with a good old fashioned pen drive, memory
stick, or whatever else they're called now.

Re: adding reverb on a video on iMovie

2014-08-30 Thread Phil Halton
I don't believe that's possible. Usually, what you record is what you get,
there's no audio processing capacities in QT that I'm ware of. I just messed
around a bit in QT and I find that it is very easy to record a video, and then
to trim off beginning and ending junk by splitting and deleting the split parts
you don't want. Anything beyond that gets a little more difficult.
Also, in iMovie, I don't think you can do that either. You have to adjust your
levels and wet/dry mix the way you want it to sound in the movie before
recording as it can't be adjusted after the fact. Though, in iMovie, you can
affect the audio volume.
Any information about the advanced features of iMovie or QT that are accessible
to us would be a great help from the other movie makers among us.

This is getting painful. If you synced and backed up the iPhone
with your computer, connect it via USB and bring up iTunes. You then
will restore the phone but lose anything aadded after the last backup.

I'm surprised you didn't get in trouble with your cell provider.

Not sure if this will work, however if it was me, I assume you have

Re: iTools: a revised and better opinion

2014-08-30 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, I'd like to recomend musicbox as an exceptional way of handling the
tagging issue. I genuinely love this program and by time I found it, the
author had discontinued production. If it's not still out there somewhere I
could provide it I'm sure.

ITunes never worked for me. The more I tried it, the more it broke. I put up
with it constantly for about 6 months. Every time I would ask the list how to
do something in Itunes I would get back, "oh, it's really easy", followed by a
list of 20 or 30 steps needed to accomplish a task. I've tried to teach it to
some of my clients who insist that they want to use it, but really it's just
painful.

playing computer audio to an airplay system?

2014-08-30 Thread Justin Mann
Hi all,

I’ve just purchased an airplay system the bows and wilkins z2, and so far so
good. I’d like to have any audio that I stream from Safari go out to that
speaker via air play is that possible? I know that if I had a bluetooth
speaker it would be possible for me to change my sound preferences to
accomplish this, but I’d like to do this via airplay.
Thanks for any help,

Re: Setting Up Selective Sync with Dropbox for Mac

2014-08-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, here is what I posted about this a couple of months ago. I have been busy
and haven't been reading this thread so I apologize if this has already been
tried and no longer works. It isn't ideal but it is doable if it still works.

You have to do this blind, but then what else is new - grin! First, if you
haven't used selective sync, I think you assume all boxes are checked by
default. First, open dropbox on the computer you want to change - the dropbox
directory, that is. See if all folders are there. Take note of what you wish to
uncheck or, if you have used selective sync before and have unchecked folders,
what you want to check. Click on your dropbox icon in menu extras and click
settings and account. For selective sync, do vo-space on change settings. Go to
the browser, interact with it and turn on quick nav. Arrow down to each folder
and, if you wish, arrow right and down to do subfolders. Don't try to use
vo-space; just do space on the ones you want to change. You won't be able to
tell what is checked or unchecked, but having checked your dropbox folder you
will know what you want to change and can just do space accordingly on whatever
needs to be changed. When done, do vo-space on the update button and then do
vo-space on update again in response to the alert. Very soon, if not
immediately, you should be able to go back to dropbox directory in finder and
verify that your changes took place. One less job for your sighted friends and
family!

Re: iTools: a revised and better opinion

2014-08-30 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, I hate to dissapoint you , but, there does seem to be a major issue with
adding music to an iPhone with iTools. It seems that, when you add music to an
iPhone, iTools has a nasty habit of stripping out the meta data tagging so
that, when you go to look for it in the music section, you don't see the tracks
where they should be. I tried using the tagging in Easy Music converter, and
even tagged the files I wanted to add using iTunes. Every single time iTools
strips out the meta data so that no matter how precice you are with your
tagging, it's no good because all that work you did ading the correct album
names and so forth gets stripped out when iTools adds those files to your
iPhone. So, again, it appears to fall short.

What a shame since they came so close to getting it right.

Re: with respect to iTools

Hi!
Just a quick question.
Is Itunes so klunky to learn?
With respect for all who finds it hard to:
What is the biggest problem with itunes that itools can solve?
For me atleast i have no problem using itunes and synching and transfering
audio to my ipad mini or Iphone.
I had problems in windows but then i got my mac and i must say i've never
encountered any issues with itunes on the mac.
But we are all different and maybe i will try itools too.

Re: playing computer audio to an airplay system?

2014-08-30 Thread Barry Hadder
Well, you should just transmit audio from safari to your system and it should
work without vo playing through it. I've always used an airport express for
this, so if your system has built-in airplay than there might be some issue
that I don't know about. I'm just guessing about that so don't take that as
fact. It really should work.
Might just be a volume issue. You can increase the volume with command-up.

The short answer is that I don't know. Hopefully I said something useful
though.

Cool! I wonder if ethernet would work for the scenario where one needs
to share files between mac and PC using a PC laptop or desktop and not
say via Bootcamp or Fusion on the Mac. Over wifi it seems unreliable to
say the least.

However, Today I needed to copy an enormous amount of data from a NAS

So, as I began the copy process, I was told that it would take about 6

Then, I remembered that along with my new Mac, I purchased a Thunderbolt

Using a wired connection, the same amount of data was transferred in less

So, no matter how much progress we make, let's remember and revere the

Re: with respect to iTools

2014-08-30 Thread Ray Foret Jr
I think that, for some of them, it may have to do with a lack of seemingly
simple instructions on how to add music, add videos, check this or that album
or this or that song to synch or not to synch. I think also, to speak frankly,
that some of us, (doubtless without meaning to) instruct others in how to do
something with far more steps than are strictly necessary: and, as a
consequence of all the above, iTunes resisters, (such as I myself once was)
claim it's to complicated. As for iTools, I can't argue with its accessibility
for the most part, nor with its ease of use. However, I do have one very
serious issue that I have found. Apparently, when you add tracks to an iDevoce
after going through all the work of ading meta data taggs and making sure that
everything is correct, all that work goes down the drain when iTools adds the
tracks to the device because, for some blasted reason, all the critically
important meta data gets stripped out so that the iPhone cannot see exactly
where to put the new tracks and thus, they don't show up in the albums you've
done the work to put together. Yes, the songs are added: but, the only way in
which to locate them is to go to the more tab and, from there, select songs
rather than albums. IF you just want songs, that's okay I guess, but, if you
are like me and you instist on properly organized material, that's a real drag.
That's why iTunes is still the better way to proceed. With iTunes, you can
add .wav files, have iTunes do the .4ma encoding for you and, of course, it
will even move individual files in to the appropriate folders depending on how
you tag them. And, for my money, that's much better.

That's brilliant. I never thought of abandoning the VO commands and just using

By the way, is the quick nav part really necessary? Or could you just do it

Re: playing computer audio to an airplay system?

Justin,

In my last post I made a suggestion that after further consideration I believe
to be totally wrong.
I don't believe there is any issue with using airfoil with a system having

I'm sure that it works but you just need to keep working with it.

IF you need to contact iTools support for any reason, herer is how.

1. Open iTools.

2. Now, VO left until you get just to the left of the tool bar.

3. You want to look for an unlabeled check box just to the right of the "full

Check this box.
4. This will open up a menu in which there is a selection called "help" Press
this button.
5. You will now be presented with a choice of asking for help via Facebook or
e-mail. IF you choose e-mail, your e-mail client will open and direct a

put up with it constantly for about 6 months. Every time I would ask
the list how to do something in Itunes I would get back, "oh, it's
really easy", followed by a list of 20 or 30 steps needed to accomplish
a task. I've tried to teach it to some of my clients who insist that
they want to use it, but really it's just painful.

After synching my iPhone with iTunes and working out how to load
videos to it, I have decided again to attempt the process of importing
videos to my iPhone. Upon the more recent try, I met with success.
For those of us who use iTunes to manage our iDevices, iTunes still
stands as the better way to do this because of the ease with which one
can properly tag meda data for adding files in to an iPhone. However,
for individuals looking for a non-iTunes alternative, iTools appears
at the moment to be the best bet: with, of course, the understanding
that many things that iTunes can do for one in the way of tagging, and
file convertion, one must find other ways to do one'sself if one is
going to use such third party solutions as iTools. Again, I cannot
emphasize enough the importance of the fact that if you are going to
break away from iTunes, you need to come to grips with having to do
many tasks manually that using iTunes makes very easy. However, if
you are bound and determined not to use iTunes, may I suggest the
following solutions.

1. Easy Music converter. From the Mac app store. This app, (though
not free) does provide an exelent encoder for .4ma and has fewer
audible artifacts than most third party .4ma encoders. Some meta data
tagging is offered here too.

2. Burn. For CD burning, this is an exelent third party tool and is
very straight forward and easy to use. Also, simly Burns should not
be overlooked as it is also fully accessible and is very similar in
ability.

3. For CD wripping, Max is the way to go. It too is fully
accessible. Though a little dated by now, it still serves as an
exelent wripper and even has .4ma encoding and I believe offers some
meta data tagging.

4. Finally, for actually transfering all that stuff back and forth,
iTools.

5. Want all four solutions wrapped in to one? Then stay with iTunes.

Hi all
Just heard about this on Applevis, going to give this a try as could
help those who need a refresher, look for Braille Tutor and is a free

can be purchased through the app, also known as an in-app purchase.
Might be a good way for you to prepare for the new Braille input system

Two ReadKit Questions

2014-08-30 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I've been using ReadKit a lot recently, since I can't get the version of Lire
that supports Feedly on my iOS6 iPod and my iPhone is still in surgery.
Overall, I like ReadKit, but I wonder if I can change how it displays things?
Right now, each article in the table is shown as:
source, time, title, summary
I want:
title, source, summary, time
Is this doable?

Also, how to you delete just one item? When I move through a bunch of articles
in RSS feeds they are marked as "read", then I clear read items, However, when
reading Instapaper articles, I'd rather just delete one at a time; I read them
all, I don't skim through those like I do RSS, so I want to read one and erase
or archive it. I can't find a command to do this, though.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on either of these questions.

Re: Setting Up Selective Sync with Dropbox for Mac

2014-08-30 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Thanks, Cheryl. That certainly seems to be the key. I tried that but somehow I
must have unchecked a lot of boxes inadvertently (despite being very careful),
as after Dropbox applied the changes I lost most of my folders from this Mac.
I've now tried to re-check them and am now waiting for those changes to be
applied. I hope that takes me back to normal (fingers crossed). Perhaps this
has something to do with my previous attempts at setting this up, though each
of those times the update button remained dimmed and thus no changes should
have been kept.

Anyway, it's something for others to be wary about and seems it's still worth
writing to Dropbox and informing them of the issue. I'll go look for an
appropriate contact details now.

Re: PDF Pen Pro

2014-08-30 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yeah, it would be awesome if they could figure it out, but I think it will be
difficult and perhaps a while off. In the meantime I think the more pressing
issue is for them to get other form fields such as checkboxes and pop up menus
working in forms which have been built with accessibility in mind.

Next it would be great if they could get the text to read better as in Preview,
and if they could get the heading and form field tags etcetera to work like
normal html headings and forms that would be fantastic.

And then there's the features to reorder pages, insert new pages, create tables
of contents and use them to navigate large documents. These features would be
great if they worked with VoiceOver. I haven't fully explored them yet but I
suspect there are some issues for now.

Certainly please let us know if there's anything else we can help with by
testing.
Best,
Nic

A few issues with Boot Camp, and a heads-up for users of JAWS

2014-08-30 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello all,

I encountered Wi-Fi issues on a late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro while running
Windows 8.1 professional via Boot Camp. I therefore decided to do some
troubleshooting. Really the only troubleshooting suggestion I could find apart
from erasing my Windows partition and starting from scratch was to repair the
Boot Camp support software. I tried to do this but got errors saying that the
installer could not complete and to try it again at a later time.

Upon doing some research, I discovered that at least a few people got these
errors who had third-party video drivers installed, and therefore the fix was
to temporarily uninstall all third-party video devices, repair the Boot Camp
installation, then reinstall them. As you probably know, JAWS does in fact
install a video driver to assist with screen reading, so I uninstalled it
temporarily and sure enough, this was the fix. The Boot Camp installer was able
to run at that point and repaired the support software.

Unfortunately, it seems that uninstalling the Freedom Scientific Video
Intercept drivers triggered my JAWS activation to be lost. Clearly this should
not have happened, but I've encountered many situations where this has happened
to JAWS over the years for fairly minor system tweaks, or even smaller things
such as turning off the Wi-Fi switch on a laptop, and occasionally you can fix
the problem by putting things back to the way they were. I hoped that
reinstalling the Video Intercept drivers would have re-activated my copy of
JAWS, but it did not. This feels like a bug, and I think users of JAWS should
be aware that if they are going to repair or update their Boot Camp Support
Software, it is likely that they will lose their activation. Since Apple does
post updates to the support software from time to time, I think this is
something to keep in mind.

On another note my Wi-Fi issues are unfortunately not resolved. Among other
things, Wi-Fi does not work after the computer sleeps. Windows thinks that I am
using a separate Wi-Fi adapter (e.g. the label of the adapter changes from
"Wi-Fi" to "Wi-Fi 2", and no connections can be established until the computer
is rebooted. Also, the connection drops quite frequently--and again, this only
happens while using Windows and not with OS X.

Just wanted to share, but any insight would of course be welcomed.

Grant

than enabling voiceover at login.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."
(Lamentations 3:21-23 ESV)

Re: Braille at login screen

I have the Edge too. The settings I have for login is, no automatiic
login, and I have the list of users displayed so I only need to type in
password after I choose my account. Is yours set up the same?

Re: Braille at login screen

2014-08-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, those are my settings too. Are you using it as bluetooth or usb? I usually
use it with usb on my Macs because then I can switch back and forth as I use it
with bluetooth with my i-devices. I haven't tried to see when the display
connects to the computer if using bluetooth.

Sure and am confused why it doesn't support Safari. It is supposed to be
browser independent.
