May I ask when you installed Windows 8, how did you get it to speak as I could
not get it to speak when I installed it under an unattended instalation.
Perhaps you could write to me off list so as not to clutter people's mail boxes.

Thanks.

iPad backup and restore

2014-03-31 Thread Chris G
Hi,
I currently have an iPad 3rd generation and just purchased an iPad mini
but haven't received it yet.

I have just backed my iPad up to the mac with iTunes.

When I get the new iPad mini what is the best way to restore the backup
 to the new mini?

I assume I power it up and go through the setup process but am unsure
after that.
Thanks

Chris

Hi!
You have not mentioned about the [control voiceover by apple scripts check box]
So I was wondering if you have that checked or if it has become unchecked!
VO utility [VO+f8 and you should be on general just arrow across to find that
check box and if unchecked just check it! *smile*
That should fix that problem!

Re: IOS apps and TV access

2014-03-31 Thread Chris Blouch
This is probably what the sales person was confused about. You can get
an Apple iPhone app to control the TV but that's not AppleTV. That said,
this is the battle currently being waged. Should the TV be 'smart' and
support apps, web surfing etc or should it be a dumb screen which you
connect to smart boxes like AppleTV or whatever you like? For me, I like
to choose my stuff and want to plug in the device of my choosing, which
currently is a Mac Mini. My in-laws have some kind of big flast screen
with web surfing and such but they don't even use it. Just to cumbersome
with a remote. I did get to go to Comcast's unveiling of their talking
set-top box at CSUN which was impressive. They had an iPhone app and
when you hit the button and said "tune the weather channel" the set top
box changed the channel as expected. The whole interface on the box
itself had speech so, like an iPhone, everything you navigated to would
speak what it was. Quite nice. I was talking to some of the folks and
they apparently took the Siri approach where they render the speech on
their server farm and download it to the box on the fly. This makes it
much easier to fix/improve things in the future without having to push
out major software changes to a jillion boxes.

Assigning braille commands with the Braille Edge 40

2014-03-31 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I think I have figured out the problem that is causing some folks some grief. I
went to the VoiceOvg Utility and tried to assign a new braille command to a
braille key. I wanted to assign one for the Mac command accent symbol for going
between windows. I could not get VoiceOver to let me add a row to the table,
even though the directions says that you can add a row. As far as I can tell,
the Mac just ignored me when I pressed the add button. If I am right here, this
means you can only use the ones that are already assigned, the ones that are in
the manuals from Apple and HIMS. This may be a problem with other braille
displays, too, I don't know.

I think in order for this to work you have to able to type in the meaning of
the key and then be able to press command b like the instructions say when you
are in the section for the braille key description. You also have to be able to
type in the text for the key description and what it does, or it's useless. As
far as I can tell right now, this does not work, for this braille display.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: Assigning braille commands with the Braille Edge 40

2014-03-31 Thread John Panarese
Oddly enough, I can assign commands with the Braille Edge. I just go to the
bottom of the table and do the command-b. Then, I press the combination I
desire and provided I am not duplicating an existing command, it will appear in
the table and I then can assign the combination with the popup menu.

Re: iPad drops contact with shared library

2014-03-31 Thread Chris Blouch
As some background, years ago I had an 802.11B or G router (can't recall
which) that would drop connections when I used my particular Panasonic
wireless phone. Apparently that phone ran on the same 2.4GHz radio band
as the Wifi which is also the same band as my microwave oven. In other
words, that radio band is crowded such that using my microwave made
noise on the phone while using my phone would cause my wifi to slow to a
crawl or drop. The oven is old so apparently it is not as shielded as
newer ones. Anyway, I never could get the wifi and phone to cooperate
and ended up having to get a newer phone. Apparently the newer ones are
'frequency agile' and will hop around noisy parts of the spectrum such
as my wifi and microwave. After that I had no more problems. I ended up
giving the old phone to my inlaws who put it in their detached garage,
away from everything else.

It could have something to do with the signal your router is

interference from things like cordless phones and such. These sorts

Ok, John. How did you get to the bottom of the table? That is an obvious
question, I guess, but obviously I'm doing something wrong. VoiceOver says to
go to Add so that's why I did it that way. The other thing is, when you press
command b, how does it know what command you are telling the key to set itself
to? Or, can you set commands for the ones on the table?

Tim,
I know I saw the Display name option somewhere and am certain my
full name is there.

Here is what I have so far. In the display login window part are 2
radio buttons, one for 'list all users' and one for 'name and password'.
If the first one is selected. I have to navigate to my account and then
only have to type in the password. If the other option is selected, I
have to type in both name and password. I will leave this the way it is
for now. Gotta get to work on other things in the Mac.

* go to the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
* Select Users & Groups.
* Unlock the pane by pressing on the lock near the bottom of the pane, then

That should do it. A few things to note though. If you have iCloud keychain

Nope,

Press on the name of the loop. At least that's the way I do it.

Re: iPad drops contact with shared library

2014-03-31 Thread Agent086b
Hi,
I am reasonably sure that my phones are on 5GHZ band, so that shouldn’t be the
problem. I am still having problems with the iPad continuing to play music. I
called Apple but of course the problem did not occur when I was talking with
them.

 Hi,

It could have something to do with the signal your router is delivering,
that is, B, G or N signal. If it is an older router and a newer iPad,
they often don’t like each other that much and this sort of thing isn’t
out of the ordinary. The other option is signal interference from things
like cordless phones and such. These sorts of wireless devices often
interfere with the WiFi signal at those older frequencies. Make sure that
those kinds of devices are not set close to the router itself and you may
wish to change which signal frequency your router emits. If it is

Re: iPad drops contact with shared library

2014-03-31 Thread Chris Blouch
What kind of router is it and can you tell what networking is it using
(802.11G or 802.11N)? 2007 is right about when the 802.11N routers came
out and many of those were built using the draft standards which means
they didn't get everything right. 802.11N also can run in the 5GHz range.

Re: iPad drops contact with shared library

2014-03-31 Thread Chris Blouch
Well, if it's 802.11G then it's not going to interfere with phones
running at 5GHz. Maybe the device is reaching its end of life? I poked
around in some forums and apparently there have been firmware updates
for this device. Have you ever done a firmware update? Is this hardware
supplied by your ISP? If so, maybe you can contact them about dropouts.
They might have a few suggestions.

As some background, years ago I had an 802.11B or G router (can't

microwave oven. In other words, that radio band is crowded such
that using my microwave made noise on the phone while using my
phone would cause my wifi to slow to a crawl or drop. The oven is
old so apparently it is not as shielded as newer ones. Anyway, I
never could get the wifi and phone to cooperate and ended up having
to get a newer phone. Apparently the newer ones are 'frequency

wifi and microwave. After that I had no more problems. I ended up
giving the old phone to my inlaws who put it in their detached
garage, away from everything else.

Hi,

It could have something to do with the signal your router is
delivering, that is, B, G or N signal. If it is an older router

this sort of thing isn’t out of the ordinary. The other option
is signal interference from things like cordless phones and
such. These sorts of wireless devices often interfere with the
WiFi signal at those older frequencies. Make sure that those
kinds of devices are not set close to the router itself and you
may wish to change which signal frequency your router emits. If
it is transmits using channel 6, maybe change it to channel 11.

First, confirm that the computer delivering the Shared iTunes

folder groups and text groups in ML

2014-03-31 Thread Chris Snyder
Hi all,
I put ML on a 2010 model Macbook Pro. It was as clean an install as it could
be. now when I go to my browser, instead of the normal column view, it says
stuff like "Folder Group" and "text group," and it's behaving quite strangely.
Is there some obvious thing I'm overlooking? On my other computer with ML on
it, it seems to be the normal column view where the name of the folder or file
is announced, and that's it. I could really use some help here.

Friendly,
Chris

You might have your view set to icon view. If it says "image browser", you have
icon view set. On the fly, just press command-3 to bring back column view. You
