Team speak and team talk are useable for the blind. On the mac platform team
speak has some issues with accessibility. You can’t move from channel to
channel on the server but for the most part it is useable.

Hi,
I have been reading a file in preview. I have another file open in text edit

Everything is fine until I have to return to preview. when I do, my place

Is there a way to keep my place in preview? Does Skim work better for this?

thanks!

Safari question

2014-01-17 Thread regina alvarado
Good morning. Haven’t quite gotten things sound wise the way I want them, but
getting closer because of your help. Thanks. Have a simple question. When in
Safari, if I am interacting with the HTML and links, how do I get back to the
previous page I was on or my home page? Have the prefs to work links with the
tab key. Tried going into menu. Maybe if I ask for the toolbar, but not sure of
command for that, VO something? Thanks.

Re: questions about preview and braille

2014-01-17 Thread Daniel Hawkins
Hello all,

This tip works in both Preview and Text Edit. When you go to the program go
right untill you get to the text feild and interact, now do the rotor command
and navigate with character, words, or lines, or paragraph, so when you switch
from one app to the next it will remember the last place.

Re: Safari question

2014-01-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In case David’s message doesn’t read the punctuation to you, it is command-left
brace. This is the key just to the right of the letter “p”. These sort of
shortcuts can also be found within the menubar in the History menu. Note that
all regular keyboard shortcuts available to the sighted user are also available
to you as a VO user so take some time to explore the menu items and their
corresponding keyboard shortcut and this could make things easier for your web
navigation.

Selecting a bunch of items in Mavericks without having to select them all

2014-01-17 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Is there a command to select the first item and then go down a bunch select the
last one and the command will select all the items in between the two points?
For example if I want to highlight all of my Billy Joel songs for a playlist
instead of clicking on 200 songs with VO command enter is there a command to
select the first and last one and by doing so it will highlight everything
between the first and last one. Thanks,

Navigating Between Sections Within a Chapter in iBooks?

2014-01-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I’m currently reading a novel in iBooks which has several sections within each
chapter. I can read it on the iPod just fine, but on the Mac, the sections
don’t seem to be presented sequentially by VO. Whole sections are skipped
sometimes. Has anyone found a way to use a keystroke to go to the next section?
I’ve tried item chooser, which is unpredictable, and I’ve tried stopping
interaction with the book text scroll area and using right-arrow to find the
next section, but this doesn’t work either.

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: Selecting a bunch of items in Mavericks without having to select them all

2014-01-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
I know of no method with the keyboard to mark the beginning and end of a
selection area. You can try holding down shift-down-arrow, and then check your
progress periodically by pressing VO-F6. Another way to do this might be to do
a search in your library for Billy Joel, select all the resulting songs by
pressing command-a, then make a playlist from your selection with
command-shift-n.

Re: questions about preview and braille

2014-01-17 Thread Daniel Hawkins
Ok, I use the trackpad for this, since I’m am more used to the IOS editing.

If you turn on trackpad commander you can use rotor to select character, word,
line, etc. when you interact with a text you can select one of the rotor
options and use the down arrow. So you can skip by character, word, line etc.
This method is also used for editing and copying and paste.

I’m not sure this method is the best way to do things, but this is the way I
find most helpful.

Hey Teresa,

Thanks, your search idea and selecting all might be the best way. I remember
when I could see there was a way to do this back in my windows days. It is not
a command I would use a lot, but every now and then.

Re: Rotor setting not reading where it is set

2014-01-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Regina,

the name of the feature is actually “quick nav” with a V as in Victor, short
for navigation. I love your phrase for it, though, as it does sometimes seem
that way to me. :)

Make sure quick nav is turned on by pressing left and right arrow keys at the
same time. Then try going to the character setting. when you need to turn it
off, you can toggle it with the two side arrow keys again.

Re: Rotor setting not reading where it is set

2014-01-17 Thread Alex Hall
Most times, you can interact with the text you want to read and then use vo
commands to read it character by character. A filename in Finder, for instance,
is easily reviewed: interact until you can't anymore, then use vo-shift-right
or left, or vo-w twice. I prefer this to Quicknav since I don't need to
remember to turn anything off next time I go to use an arrow key or type
something.

Re: Selecting a bunch of items in Mavericks without having to select them all

2014-01-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Yes, it involves selecting the beginning or end of the area you want
highlighted and holding the mouse down while you move it over your desired
block of text or items. I’d imagine you could try this with VO and the
mouse-dragging commands, or you might have better results with mouse keys on,
which are independent of vO. Or the trackpad with keyboard-commander off might
be a way to do this as well.

Serious Mail Busy Problems in Mavericks All of the sudden

2014-01-17 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey listers,

Is anyone else experiencing serious mail busy busy busy problems in Mavericks
classic view mail mode? Over the last two days mail has become almost unusable,
with me having to constantly quit mail to stop the busy busy and sluggishness.
It just started again while writing this message. I haven’t changed any
settings, so not sure where this could have come from and what can be causing
it. Also what’s with messages taking so long to load as I am constantly getting
VO saying empty scroll area where the text of an email should be and eventually
the text appears there. Is there anything setting wise I might be able to
change, as mail has become pretty unusable. And now VO has completely stopped
working with mail but every other application is fine absolutely no speech with
mail all of the sudden as it usually reads characters and words, and now there
is nothing

Re: What is the intonation?

2014-01-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
intonation is how much expression the voice has, how much it rises and falls.
If you set it to 0, you get a robot voice.

Stanza not opening epub book in Mavericks

2014-01-17 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Listers,

Has anybody had problems with Stanza opening epub books in Mavericks? I have an
epub book which when I try to open it in Stanza in order to convert it into a
.rtf gives me an error message about something or other missing in the archive.
The error message is so long and complex that I didn’t think it would help to
copy it here. Is there any other application that would open and read an epub
book? I need to read it with the braille display because its language is not
supported by any voice in Mac. Also, I need to read it very carefully and
slowly. Any ideas?

Andrew

Is it a protected epub book, such as iBooks or Nook? You can’t read iBooks or

Re: OT: FW: GW Micro Announces Global Window-Eyes Initiative for users of Microsoft Office

2014-01-17 Thread Maria and Joe Chapman
HI. this is a good start, but it still doesn’t make a windows computer truly
accessible out of the box. I did this with an iPhone but I think it applies to
all apple products. My brother left his iPhone in the house, and went out. He
called me from a friends phone and asked me to go in to his call history and
look for a person’s name. I was to call or text them and let them know where
he was and that I had his phone so they could find him. I was able to ask siri
to turn on voice over and go from there. Just like I can pretty much get voice
over to work on any mac without installing or downloading anything.

Re: Looks like Windows is also heading toward full screen reader built in

2014-01-17 Thread Alex Hall
I haven't followed this thread very closely, so I'm sorry if this has come up.
You seem to be forgetting about NVDA, a free screen reader that has very good
Office support and can also be scripted. A common complaint about NVDA is that
people don't like Espeak, the synthesizer it comes with, but a blog post I read
said that Window-Eyes will also come with Espeak in this deal. So, the idea
that this Window-Eyes offer opens more doors seems odd, since NVDA is already
available, no matter which version of office you have, or if you don't have
Office at all. Some comments I've heard even suggest that Window-Eyes does not
offer very good Office support compared to other screen readers.

Reading column and row titles automatically in Numbers

2014-01-17 Thread Vic
Hi.
I noticed that when creating new spreadsheet in Numbers, the column and row
titles are read automatically. This, however, doesn't seem to be the case
when when reading spreadsheets from other people, eg when they are imported
from Excel.
Has anyone found a solution to this?

Thanks for any help.
Best,
Victor

Dual Boot versus Virtual Machine

2014-01-17 Thread Robert C

Hi everyone,
Just joined the list. Got a MacBook Pro recently, and will start
training on it next week.

First of many questions, but will not fire them off too quickly. I
am switching from Windows 7 to the Mac. One program that is not yet
supported by OS X Mountain Lion is Duxbury. I will keep the Windows
laptop to run that and MS Office.

I had asked Enabling Technologies, who makes the Juliet embosser, if
the embosser will work connected via USB to the Mac with Windows on it.
This is their response.

"...in a dual boot environment rather than in a virtual machine.
However, we have not tested this."

Does this mean I cannot use VMWare for this? If so, will dual boot
be accessible anyway? What is the difference between the two modes? I
hope to get answers I can put to use during the training. Thanks.

Re: Dual Boot versus Virtual Machine

2014-01-17 Thread Chris Blouch
You can set up a mac to 'dual boot' where you partition your hard drive
in two pieces with Windows on one and MacOS on the other. Then Apple's
BootCamp tool lets you pick which one you want to start up. When running
Windows this way it's no different than any other PC laptop and your
Apple turns into one of the best high-end Windows machines. The downside
is you have to be in Windows 'mode' or Mac 'mode' and the two do not
share or talk to each other. So there should be no reason that any USB
Windows device wouldn't be happy in that arrangement. That said, the
more integrated approach is to use VMWare Fusion to emulate some PC
hardware so you can essentially run Windows as an app on your Mac. While
I haven't had the need to attach a lot of USB devices, usually when I do
and VMWare is up and running it will ask if I want the newly attached
USB device connected to the Mac side or the virtual Windows instance. I
would think that if you chose Windows the Windows app running in the
virtual windows would have no idea that it's not running on a real PC.
Of course the virtualization is not always perfect but a lot of things
seem to just work. Would probably be worth giving it a go with Fusion.

Re: Reading column and row titles automatically in Numbers

2014-01-17 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
Apple told me that the top row and the first first column are considered to be
heading rows and columns by default, at least that's the way I understood it.
Have you tried to change the file a little when you export it to have the
labels set up that way? You can increase headers in Numbers also, and maybe
that would make a difference. I have not tried this, so if you try it, you
might want to make a copy of the file first.

Gigi

Re: Dual Boot versus Virtual Machine

2014-01-17 Thread Chris Blouch
The little I do in Windows didn't require a dedicated Bootcamp setup so
I've always used VMs. The other nice thing is the virtual windows hard
drive is just a (large) file. So I keep a master copy around and if my
running copy gets mangled somehow I just put it in the trash and clone
another one from my original. There is also a 'snapshot' thing in VMWare
which will let you keep a whole hierarchy of point in time stored so you
can revert back. I haven't used that as I'm usually just testing stuff
out on clean setups and then throwing them away. I also keep multiple
VMs around for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. That would be nearly
impossible with a bootcamp setup.

Hello all,

I would like to add. On top of this. If you are looking at other Options other
than Duxbury, you can use Libre and install the OBT2 extention and that can
translate. I have seen that on a Windows side, but I have not seen it on the

that if you chose Windows the Windows app running in the virtual windows would
have no idea that it's not running on a real PC. Of course the virtualization
is not always perfect but a lot of things seem to just work. Would probably be
worth giving it a go with Fusion.

Re: Dual Boot versus Virtual Machine

2014-01-17 Thread Terje Strømberg
Do you only need to make a copy of the original Windows by clicking command + c
and store it on a free space? Then throw it in the trash and copy it back with
command + c and paste it into the virtual machine folder again? That would be
fantastic in a way, because we are sort of talking about a windows computer.

Take care

17. jan. 2014 kl. 23:21 skrev Chris Blouch :

The little I do in Windows didn't require a dedicated Bootcamp setup so I've
always used VMs. The other nice thing is the virtual windows hard drive is just
a (large) file. So I keep a master copy around and if my running copy gets
mangled somehow I just put it in the trash and clone another one from my
original. There is also a 'snapshot' thing in VMWare which will let you keep a
whole hierarchy of point in time stored so you can revert back. I haven't used
that as I'm usually just testing stuff out on clean setups and then throwing
them away. I also keep multiple VMs around for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. That
would be nearly impossible with a bootcamp setup.

Hi All,

I just want to point out that I have had a paid copy of Window-Eyes for a few
years. Last year though, if I wanted the Vocalizer voices I needed to pay for
them. Also, I listened to a recent podcast from GW micro on how to get started
with the WE version for Office and it was mentioned in there that other
synthesizers could be purchased. I am taking a wait and see approach on how all
this will play out. I provide training to my clients in all areas of vision

Re: bootcamp question, apparently win7 drivers are unavailable?

2014-01-17 Thread Terje Strømberg
You need to format your usb device as a FAT32 file format. You can do this in
disk utility by hitting command + space and type disk utility. You find your
drive in the side panel and tab to delete, chose FAT format and a name and tab
to delete key. Let me know if this works, cause i have problems with this
version of Mountain Lion and a Passport external. Bootcamp says it cannot make
a bootable device. I have done it once before, but deleted the boot camp to
make a new. Now it will not make a bootable usb device. Have tried both with
LaCie and Passport. OSX can read and write to them because they are from OSX to
FAT and reverse. Let me know if you have luck and wich OS you are running.

Soon i will try with a Mountain Lion wthout updates.

Take care

Thanks.

Re: Teamspeak3 accessibility

2014-01-17 Thread Phil Halton
I just downloaded and tried out the stable version of TeamSpeak, and couldn't
get past the setup wizard screen. In fact, I couldn't even command Q the app -
had to force quit. It seemed completely inaccessible to me.
The windows version works fine, but I was hoping to have a mac option as well.
It ain't looking' good!

 Hello all,

This tip works in both Preview and Text Edit. When you go to the program
go right untill you get to the text feild and interact, now do the rotor
command and navigate with character, words, or lines, or paragraph, so
when you switch from one app to the next it will remember the last place.

complaint about NVDA is that people don't like Espeak, the synthesizer
it comes with, but a blog post I read said that Window-Eyes will also
come with Espeak in this deal. So, the idea that this Window-Eyes offer
opens more doors seems odd, since NVDA is already available, no matter
which version of office you have, or if you don't have Office at all.
Some comments I've heard even suggest that Window-Eyes does not offer
very good Office support compared to other screen readers.

help with mail

2014-01-17 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
Dear list members,

I have tried to deal for weeks with my gmail account not working with Apple
Mail. I don’t know what could be the matter. I spent hours with the people at
the Mac Accessibility Support line, and took two trips to an Apple store with
iMac in toe.

My issues with mail have not been resolved, and I am resigned to the fact they
will not until possibly the next upgrade to the operating system.

I am not able to receive any messages from my google address into the mail app.

I’ve tried playing with other mail apps, but have not been satisfied with the
results.

Thunderbird setup seems inaccessible. Eudora no longer runs on the Mac.

I am now trying my hand at Mail Pilot, and have issues with it as well.

I would appreciate it if list members would message me directly if they have
suggestions about alternatives ti Apple mail. Maybe I’m missing something with
the Thundergbird install, or maybe you are using Mail Pilot with great success.

If so, I’d love to hear from you.

I am asking for direct responses since I have so much trouble getting to my
filtered messages to all my lists, including this one.

Sincerely,

Antonio Guimaraes

Re: Looks like Windows is also heading toward full screen reader built in

2014-01-17 Thread Chris Blouch
I wonder why they went with WindowEyes. Maybe less outcry when the #3
gets picked for inclusion. As it normally goes for $900 a pop I could
see MS giving them $9 each which would be made up for in quantity. Last
WebAIM survey had Primary Screen Reader use with Jaws at 49%, WindowEyes
at 12% and Voiceover at 9%. NVDA was actually second with nearly 14%.

it comes with, but a blog post I read said that Window-Eyes will also
come with Espeak in this deal. So, the idea that this Window-Eyes offer
opens more doors seems odd, since NVDA is already available, no matter

Some comments I've heard even suggest that Window-Eyes does not offer
very good Office support compared to other screen readers.

Re: Dual Boot versus Virtual Machine

2014-01-17 Thread Chris Blouch
Generally Windows viruses won't work on OSX so it's not like having a
virtual windows box is going to add much risk. As a virtual windows
machine it is just as susceptible to viruses as a real windows box. That
also means you could create a document in Windows that is infected, use
your Mac to send it, which won't do anything to your mac, and then
infect a windows recipient. It's like the Mac is wearing an asbestos
lined suit while passing along fireballs. Anyway, the only
cross-platform viruses I've ever heard of were Word macro viruses but
I'm not sure if those are still around much these days. Worst case is
that some worm infects the virtual windows machine and formats its
virtual drive, not your whole mac. The virtual machine is sort of
playing in its own sandbox that keeps it from messing things up beyond
the boundaries you've allowed it.

it's no different than any other PC laptop and your Apple turns into one of the

should be no reason that any USB Windows device wouldn't be happy in that
arrangement. That said, the more integrated approach is to use VMWare Fusion to
emulate some PC hardware so you can essentially run Windows as an app on your
Mac. While I haven't had the need to attach a lot of USB devices, usually when
I do and VMWare is up and running it will ask if I want the newly attached USB
device connected to the Mac side or the virtual Windows instance. I would think
that if you chose Windows the Windows app running in the virtual windows would
have no idea that it's not running on a real PC. Of course the virtualization
is not always perfect but a lot of things seem to just work. Would probably be

Re: Dual Boot versus Virtual Machine

2014-01-17 Thread Chris Blouch
The virtual machine and all it's setting show up a a single big package
file on OSX. I usually keep it on my desktop as VMWare doesn't seem to
care where you stick it. So I can copy that file as many times as I want
and throw them in the trash if I don't want a particular instance, just
like any other document. Of course these things are big, usually 10GB or
more, so you can run into disk space limitations. Just checked my one
Win7 IE9 VMWare copy and it's taking up 30GB. Now there is some chance
to 'compact' these virtual machine since the allocated disk space grows
automagically but doesn't shrink back when you delete something. That's
why I usually allocate a bunch of space up front (maybe 40GB) knowing
that VMWare will only use as much as it needs to as I install Windows or
apps on top of Windows.
