Text edit

2014-01-16 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi,
Can somebody please remind me how to deal with Text Edit under Mavericks? When
I open a 14 page file, I can’t seem to move character by character which I can
do if I open a new file. In the 14 page file, I also can’t easily move around.
I’ve tried the window rap and page rap but there’s no difference. Command left
and right arrow don’t move to the beginning and end of lines, for example.

Any hints very welcome.

Lisette

Re: Teamspeak3 accessibility

2014-01-16 Thread Piotr Machacz
the stable version of teamspeak works as well as team talk. That is, everything
is accessible except the chat and channel tree. There is, however, a teamspeak
3 beta you can update to (instructions on their forums), which uses QT 5. This
makes the channel tree accessible.

Hi Lisette,
if I understoud correctly you've already tried pressing CMD + Shift + w. So did
you reset VO by pressing CMD + F5 four times. I just have this behaviour
sometimes in Pages but not in Textedit. What I do then is dragging the mouse
cursor to the VO cursor and performing a mouse click.

Hi!
OK when you receive their reply you can arrow through it and back through it
until your happy on what they have said!
Then as before just go to the end of their message and just start typing your

Then arrow past yours and wait for their's!

If you do, if you know how to interact, VO right arrow to get to your

If you chose that contact, Shift Vo M for context menu and vo down arrow

I will not write more just in case you don’t understand but this is a

VO right to do select something.

O.t flip4mac pro question

2014-01-16 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Listers,

I’m hoping somebody can shed light on this. I go to system preferences and
flip4mac and highlight browser tab. There the first setting for playing windows
media in flip4mac is checked and yet dimmed. Voiceover reads the following
message:
"Disabled because the Windows Media Player 9 plugin is not installed.”. What
does this mean? How can I install this plug-in? Is it of any importance at
all? Any benefits of having it installed?

Thanks for any help.

Flip4Mac lets you play some Windows proprietary formats as long as they
aren't encumbered with DRM. Sounds like you need to install the
WindowsMedia plugins to make it work. I think they are downloadable from

Hi,

You don't need to buy Growl to do that, you can use Notification Center. I've

From what I've read bootcamp was pretty much designed just to dual boot

For now at least, removing Soundflower seems to have done it. Apps are still
slow to open but not as bad as before, and emails rarely delay when I open them

using find in textEdit

2014-01-16 Thread Chris Moore
Hello,
How do you use find in textedit? I hit cmd-f, type in a search string, then
what? How do you exit the find dialog and go to the found text?

Re: using find in textEdit

2014-01-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

1. Press cmd-f.
2. Enter desired text.
3. VO-right to the Find Next button and VO-space on it.
4. VO-right to the Done button and VO-space on it.

VO should automatically move focus to the desired text and announce such. Be
careful, though, as that text is now selected, so, pressing certain keys could
affect the existence of it.

Re: new mac user

2014-01-16 Thread Ray Foret Jr
1. VO should turn on when you first turn on your Mac. IF, by some strange
chance it does not, press Cmd+F5. Know where your command key is? It’s the
one directly next to the space bar at either side. Your Option key is the one
directly next to the command key. How to ensure Voice Over stays on? Just
don’t turn it off.

How to get help?

IF you press VO+k, this turns on Keyboard help. Press escape to turn it off.
What I mean by VO is the key combination of control+Option together. So, if
for example, I tell you to press VO+up arrow, I mean for you to press
control+Option+up arrow all together.

Here’s another tip. You will be offered the option of starting an interactive
tutorial when Voice OVer starts up for the first time. go ahead and let this
happen. In this mode, you will be activly guided through the basics.

With respect to the broadcast program, I’d get the basics down first. Give
yourself a good two or three weeks for this.

Sent from my Mac, the only computer with full accessibility for the blind
built-in!

The Constantly Barefooted Ray, still a very happy Mac and Iphone 5 user!

Re: new mac user

2014-01-16 Thread Daniel McGee
To add what Ray has said. Once you’ve setup your Mac the way you like it. It
maybe a good idea to check the checkbox found in system preferences, Users and
Groups, now your in a table. Arrow down to Login options group and here is
where you’ll find the check box which is called, “use Voiceover in the login
window.” Note: if Voiceover says dimd afterwards then in this case you will
need to keep arrowing right with the VO keys until you here “Click the lock to
make changes.” Either a button or a check box choose which ever you want a
screen will then pop up asking you to aufenticate in other words type in your
password if you do decide to create one once you have setup your Mac.
After you’ve done this, that previous Voiceover check box should then be
un-dimd so that you can now go ahead and check it.
If you forget all this, then no problem just email us again and I’m sure
someone here will tell you how to do this again.

The reason why you would want to check this box is for example software
updates. Say you was installing a software update for your Mac and it required
you to re-start then by having this check box checked it will automatically
turn on Voiceover if it re-starts and is installing the new files and the like
for the new software update in progress. Of course, you could use the Command
F5 command to turn on Voiceover but having this check box checked should
hopefully make your life a lot easier.

I hope this tip so to speak has helped you and welcome to the list! :)

Thanks

Re: new mac user

2014-01-16 Thread Alex Hall
Command-f5 will turn Voiceover on and off, and once it is on it will remain on
until you turn it off, even after a restart. On a standard Apple keyboard, the
command key is immediately to the left or right of the spacebar. You may need
to press function with that keystroke, which is the bottom left key.

If you are interested in programming, Macs come with Python pre-installed, so
you can use that language, or you can look into using Xcode to write
Objective-c or C++ applications. The mv...@googlegroups.com email list is a
good place to ask Xcode questions.

Keystrokes are all over the internet, but Apple has a couple lists on their
website, as does www.applevis.com. The latter site also has many tutorials and
pocasts for those new to the Mac you may find useful.

Re: using find in textEdit

2014-01-16 Thread Alex Hall
I find it easiest to interact with the text and then use vo's find, vo-f,
instead. It is much faster and easier, and you can then use vo-g to find the
next occurrence or vo-shift-g to find the previous one.

step by step, please and a recommendation on whether need to buy monitor

2014-01-16 Thread Regina Alvarado
Here I am again asking same question as last night, but I need a step-by-step
of how to fix so I can lower speech and TV separately. would I be better to get
a monitor so there was no sound coming through it? If that is not important
which would cost me a lot for something I will never use, where do I attach
speakers so they will work independently. We ar struggling to find anything but
a speaker that is bluetooth, and no matter what I do to pair, it will not with
speaker and in the meantime my bluetooth keyboard is unpaired. I don't think
Mini can take more than one bluetooth device? Anyway, cannot do anything
learning on my Mini because only control I have is volume on TV remote. Any
help is more than deeply appreciated.

Re: step by step, please and a recommendation on whether need to buy monitor

2014-01-16 Thread Alex Hall
The Mini can definitely handle multiple bluetooth devices with no problem.
Wired speakers are everywhere, though - go to Best Buy or a similar store, or
hop on amazon and search for stereo computer speakers. My sister recently got a
set of speakers for $40 that sound great and have a very nice sub.

Open System Preferences and click Sound (if using VO, interact with the scroll
area, type sound until VO says "sound", and vow-space). Select the output tab,
and choose the option you want from the table. You can also lower the volume in
this window, and choose to have a volume control shown on the status menu bar
(vo-m-m). If you only want VO to go to a different sound device, open Voiceover
utility with vo-f8, chosse sound from the categories table, and choose the
sound device you want from the popup menu.

Yeah I'll probably use Xcode. How do I get a hold of that?

Keystrokes are all over the internet, but Apple has a couple lists on their

The Mac Mini is a desktop, so the same procedure should hold. To be sure,
though, do a google search for "reset SMC on [your mac's model]" and find the
Apple Knowledgebase article covering your type of computer.

The sound output in System Preferences is the "master". All output goes through
there, from Voiceover to iTunes to Youtube. Voiceover's sound output setting is
Voiceover's alone. If you set the Mini to use the HDMI output for sound, then
set Voiceover to use headphones, vo will speak through any speakers attached to
your headphone jack and not through the system default (which would be the
HDMI). I hope that makes sense.

CTIVO and Mountain Lion

2014-01-16 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
This app works very well with transferring from a Tivo to a Macbook Pro running
ML. The app will automatically convert to decripted Tivo shows, and separate
series in to sub folders. I haven't played with editing advertisements. Just
FYI.

2014-01-16 Thread Agent086b
Hi,
after running Disk Utility I think it was doing a partition repair I got the
below message.
Warning: SUID file
“System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent”
has been modified and will not be repaired.
What does this mean?
Thanks for any help.

Usually in the Unix world, a warning does not in and of itself mean you have a
problem. As long as you aren't having problems related to this warning, I
wouldn't be concerned about it.

I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper

Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!

they are new every morning;

Re: PDF Pen

2014-01-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Gigi,

I was using PDFPen. I downloaded the trial version of PDFPen Pro, and at first
it seemed to be exactly the same. VoiceOver could see the text areas, but I
couldn't seem to type text into them. Then I noticed that although VoiceOver
wasn't reading the text I typed, it appeared to be showing on screen. I could
bring the mouse pointer, and although VoiceOver wouldn't announce any typed
text under the mouse pointer, if I do a control click with the TrackPad it
offers to look up the word I typed or offers spelling suggestions if I typed
gibberish. So seems I can type, but the typed text is invisible to VoiceOver.
Also, when I am focussed on the text areas, VoiceOver announces keyboard focus
to be on "empty scroll area".

I might email you the form off list and see if we can get anywhere. Just
thought I'd send this on the list in case anyone else becomes interested in
this issue.

Thanks,
Nic

I would like to add, if you want to adjust VO on the fly, and not the master

Re: Resetting Prams

2014-01-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
For my iMac Apple Care told me to turn it off, unplug all the cables (AC Power
cable, keyboard, USB cables etcetera) from the computer and leave it for a
minute before plugging it all back in and turning it on again. This fixed some
strange issues I was having (can't now remember what they were) but I was
really surprised that something so simple could fix such strange behaviour.
