Hi,

Check in your audio menu, under audio devices. Personally, however, I find it 
quite unreliable and have taken to simply plugging  the computer into my hifi 
with a long lead and controlling it with a wireless keyboard. I actually find 
this better for hearing speech and music at the same time.

There is a feature to share recipes within the app. It will take me a while to 
import them. I have to massage the data because it has come from a lot of 
different sources. This is the first app I have used that I like as an recipe 
program. So everything I have is in text files.

There is two ways  to enable it. One is  to go in  to the terminal and type in 
a command which I forgot at the moment. But the other one is, to go in  to the

Um.. Nope!
I tried the plug in yesterday and it’s not mavericks compatible.  I also tried 
something called ogg drop which also turned out to be non mavericks compatible.
I just got another suggestion from somebody about vlc itself, so will try that.
If that doesn’t work for us, guess I’ll just have to keep on giving the files 
to hubby to convert with gold wave.

Hi,

When I tried the plug in it only half worked. I can play ogg streams in iTunes, 
but not open ogg files. Would FLV Crunch convert if you really had to?

Have you looked at MacGourmet?  I really like it and while it is a little 
pricier it has a lot more features to offer.

You can’t create separate databases for that sort of thing. But you can create 
categories for them and then store recipes for each in that category.

Everything Mavericks is 64-bit so the plugin will fail.
If I recall, Ogg Drop just messes with the file types so iTunes would 
recognize it as a sound file. That was the second step if the quicktime 
ogg plugin had worked.
If you're willing to convert the ogg files to something iTunes is happy 
with then there probably are utilities to do that. What format are you 
converting them into?

Depends on which vintage of OSX you are running. FTP was dropped from 
the sharing control panel a while ago but some variant of


sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

will get it going again. The port issue will still exist along with 
security problems with FTP in general. It's been a while since I checked 
into this but in addition to opening port 21, once the connection is 
established the FTP server will do all future connections through one or 
more other ports chosen from a pool of available ports, usually ports 
1024-5000. So you have to have in and out traffic allowed on all those 
ports in your firewall, which is why security people frown on FTP. sftp 
only needs port 22, which is the same port as ssh. Also ftp sends all 
text in the clear such as usernames and passwords while sftp encrypts 
everything. Just some stuff to google and think about. If you're just 
doing this on your own internal network the sftp advantages disappear.

Hi Gena,

You can certainly get some BBC radio stations on the Apple TV, but I’m not 
convinced it’s the most straight forward way to listen to them.

Essentially, when you click on a category of radio station, you are presented 
with a list of stations in that category in alphabetical order.  Many US 
stations start with numerals rather than a letter, so these will appear first.

The problem is that you have to know in which category the station you want to 
listen to will appear.  It’s easy for me as any BBC station I want will either 
be in sport or news, but I don’t know if their music stations appear across 
several categories.  I don’t believe it's possible to search for a radio 
station though I’d be happy to stand corrected.

If you only want national BBC stations, it’s probably far simpler to get those 
through Freeview/satellite/cable, assuming you have one of these services on 
your TV set in addition to your Apple TV.

I use liblouis to translate from print to braille. It's also actually possible 
to write in braille on your computer if you know what symbols to use and I've

Have you tried the latest LibreOffice? It was not working with voiceover 
last I tried it but I just downloaded the new version today 4.1.4.2 and 
so far the word processor is working reasonably well. At least I wasn't 
getting the empty document I used to get. I'm on 10.8 so I couldn't 
verify if there are issues with Mavericks but other forums say it works 
if you get the 64-bit OSX build.

Missing hard drive

Hi.

I am running a Mini with two drives.  I accidentally did an eject command on
the second rive, called Data, and I cannot find it now.  It does not show up
in the go to computer list, and it is not in the trash.  Any help tracking
down my wayward drive would be most appreciated.

Sounds like you dismounted your drive. You can either unplug and plug it 
back in, power cycle it, or use Disk Utility to find the drive and mount 
it again. If you go the Disk Utility route you'll just launch Disk 
Utility from the Utilities folder (shift-option-U in finder) then find 
the dive in the disks table and then find the Mount button in the 
toolbar, right after burn

Mactubes player controls

Are there keystrokes for controlling playback in Mactubes? I can start and stop 
a video, but I'd like to be able to fast-forward and rewind as well. I have the 
player set to quicktime player, and I can find nothing for ff and rw functions. 
any help?

MBA? Parallel to USB Adaptor Configuration With Juliette Pro 60

Hello Folks, 

I have an older Juliette Pro 60 that required me to utilize parallel to USB
adaptor and set up a generic text printer on the PC side. Will I be able to
do this with my MBA in the printer setup or will I need to have to purchase
a USB to parallel adaptor for the Mac (she) to handle this so when Duxbury
or another solution to be able to emboss from the Mac is available?  Please
advise if this can be accomplish on the Mac side.

After having read some 74 messages in this thread, I thought I would
chime in here with a further explanation of VO + J and how I
personally prefer to use Mail.

First off, VO-J jumps VO to the next control at same level. I
absolutely love using this key combination in iTunes; it jumpss me
from the table of songs up for playing, the player display window and
the artist list. Anyway, this thread concerns Mail. When preview is
turned off, you cannot use VO-J to open or focus the message. You have
to explicitly open the message in a new window with Return or
Command-O. In my case, I am using standard view with previews turned
off; for me VO-J jumps be back and forth between the list of mail box
folders and the message list. that works just perfectly fine for me.
Oh, I also have threading turned on. One big reason why I dislike
preview so much is preview causes the message to be marked read by
just passing over it with the arrow keys in the message list. I often
read messages out of sequence and want to be able to keep track of
which is read or unread.

As of now, I am still using Mountain Lion so am not sure if this
general concept changes with Mavericks or not.

Hope this clarifies some things about that hot key.

Re: Bluetooth Issues getting very old

There may be a couple different things going on here. Some bluetooth
speakers may automatically go off line when the computer sleeps. I
know my Sony speaker doc often shuts itself off if inactive for a
period of time. I use the speaker for playing media content but have
VO permanently assigned to system audio.

I just recently experienced a deal where my system couldn't find my
magic Trackpad but I had the machine turned off completely for over a
week while I had left town. When I came back, I had to turn the
Trackpad back on. I think it automatically powered itself off when it
lost connection to my powered-off Mac Mini.

I know you werent' terning your computer off or any of that but is
there a chance your trackpad is low on battery? I ask this since you
didn't lose connectivity to your keyboard any of this time.

Up/down control volume, and some combination of option and command with the 
left/right keys is supposed to control the play direction. Playing it backward, 
then, is sort of a real-time rewind, but that is the best you can get from this 
app.

not easy. Radio 4 is in the News category, 4 Extra in comedy and radio 2 in 
adult contemporary. I was going to use my free view box but 4 extra isn’t

Unfortunately I think I am going to have to live with these daily issues, as it 
is still happening, and my track pad is at 75% battery, so that's not the 
issue. Hopefully and I know this won't happen but when I update to Mavericks in 
the next week or so the issues will go away.

I had this problem earlier this year and the cause for me was the mouse was 
following the cursor. I unchecked that and my problem has never come back. I 
don't remember ever turning that on but I shut it off just the same.

In VO, I have everything following everything else except for the mouse.

I'm still using Mountain Lion for the time being.

Internal vs External Fusion

Hi

Boot test - Internal VMWare Fusion Windows 7 64bit running on a internal fusion 
drive on iMac vs External VMWare Fusion Windows 7 64bit running on LaCie 
external Rugged 120GB SSD. Why do i do a boot test between internal and 
external drive? To find out if external sad is faster than iMacs fusion drive 
running virtual machine. I was disappointed to find out that Windows running in 
boot camp on iMac, did not use iMac internal fusion drive, only the spinning 
drive. So i would like to see if it was the same with virtual machine or hoping 
that external was 10 seconds faster than the iMacs internal fusion drive.  The 
match ended in a draw. Dammit. In my case it was a tie. The LaCie rugged was 
connected to usb. Should not be any difference with this disk connected to 
thunderbolt or usb 3.0. I could not find out if it is possible to run both at 
same time, but i could install both with the same serial number. That said, i 
hav not confirmed that the went through Microsofts servers and was activated 
have to check that tomorrow. VMWare looks like a very goodf peace of software. 
I suspended it in the middle of 141 Windows updates and it resumed from where 
it was when suspended. I just hit the play button. Funny program.

I am just testing a quite a lot before i find the best setup for this system. 
Then i will take backup and relaxe with it and stay in Mountain Lion for many 
years. Just using the iMac for music, mail, internet, internet - tv and a few 
movies. Two or three simple programs that only run in Windows virtual machine.

So how long did it actually take from hitting play to being up and 
running? From the reviews of the LaCie Rugged 120GB SSD drives it should 
have about 112MBs read and 92MBs write on USB3 compared to 155MBs read 
and 150MBs write on Thunderbolt. So Thunderbolt should only gain you 
about 30-40% speed increase or reduction in boot time, assuming that 
bootup is mostly I/O bound.

I have also tried Louis but couldn't figure it out either.  I could go through 
the steps of translating a file I guess but could never find the translated 
file.  There didn't seem to be a place to specify where the output file should 
go.  So I gave up on it and went back to using Robo Braille.  The problem with 
that is that you need to be connected to the internet and there is apparently 
no way to translate from Braille to print.  
Any insights about how to specify where the output file should go would be 
appreciated.  Then again, it is possible I was doing something else wrong.  I 
found no good documentation and writing to the developers yielded no results.  
Maybe I will try it again as I would like to have a braille translator that can 
be used off line.

Hi Gena, nice to hear that someone listens to radio4extra. I too listen to that 
radio station quite a lot really. :)
If all else fails and you have wi-fi and a reasonable data plan then there’s 
always the website where you can access the content. I do this from my Mac and 
I have never had any trouble really using it.

Hello Chris,

Smacks forehead on desk. I am an idiot. I was trying to get OpenOffice and 
LibreOffice from a installation back when I got my Mac last March… I fail. I 
spent almost all day doing research allay and never though I’d update the apps! 
sees.

So that’s what I did, I updated both OpenOffice and Libre, and OpenOffice is 
still having Voiceover problems, but it loos like Libre is now user friendly.

Now, it is maybe my Mac needs a reboot, but both apps quit unexpedatly when I 
close them. So I don’t know that is a problem or not.

Now I’m am trying to install a Libre extension called odt2 that is supposed to 
translate to braille. I know my braille instructor does that on a Windows 
machine.

I am using the timer on iPhone. Hitting restart on Windows and as fast as i can 
double tapping on the timer. A couple of days back i did restart and watched 
the timer when the LaCie was connected to thunderbolt. The iMac fusion drive is 
in fact about 5-7 seconds faster when hitting restart and the sound for landing 
in Windows again occur. So, this means that LaCie connected to usb 3.0 was 
about 5-7 seconds faster than thunderbolt. I will try to restart with 
thunderbolt about ten times later tomorrow or in a couple of days to be sure. 
Last time i did this test only two times. iMacs fusion drive had more top time 
i.e. consistence at the top speed, but the LaCie was up there a couple of 
times, but was about 5 seconds behind a couple of times. Insanely fast at the 
best. I have to type the log in password and especially one time i was 
surprised of how fast and miss spelled.

The best iMac late 2014 will be a killer machine.

From the reviews of the LaCie Rugged 120GB SSD drives it should have about 
112MBs read and 92MBs write on USB3 compared to 155MBs read and 150MBs write on 
Thunderbolt. So Thunderbolt should only gain you about 30-40% speed increase or 
reduction in boot time, assuming that bootup is mostly I/O bound.
