Making a copy of a DVD using disk utility

2013-12-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche

Hi Listers,

I have an educational DVD which contains several folders, containing
short video clips and software. I want to copy it in its entirety, first
onto my hard drive and then eventually onto a blank DVD. I think I can
use Disk Utility to accomplish this. I've inserted the disk into the
drive, opened disk utility and chose new image from the DVD and copied
it into my hard drive. It has an extension .dmg now. Can I then burn it
onto a blank disk using the burn feature in disk utility? Is my thinking
correct? Do I need to take some other steps as well? Or is the whole
process wrong?

Thanks for any advice. I've looked through the Macvisionaries archive
but have not found the info or rather reassurance I need.

Andrew

It used to be that you could purchase an OEM copy of windows for a much cheaper

include tech support which really isn’t a big loss anyway.

Is there a way to do that from the Windows or mac, without having to

Ftp server using the server app

2013-12-29 Thread Kjsc Radio
Hello, I am thinking about setting up an FTP server using the server on Mac.
I've done this before, but I have failed. Due to incorrect Port forwarding, I
have forward ports 21 and other ports to make the FTP server work. But when one
of my other machines connects to the network via FTP, it doesn't want to allow
the connection. Is there any other ports that I should forward?

Re: virtualization solutions

thanks a ton for these links, that's awesome.
Also: virtualbox is just a virtualization solution. I have 16 gb ram, so
I figured I'd give 4 of that to a bsd box so I could test my libraries
and that on BSD as well.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-29 Thread Byron J. Lee
Why does Microsoft make getting an ISO and a key so dang hard? I would
think they'd just make it one of the standard options on their website.
Instead, I have to call a human being and give them my credit card over
the phone so they can dig out some secret hard to find copy. That sounds
kinda weird to me. Oh well, I will let you know what happens when I try
to get a copy of Windows. I'll probably get Windows 7 because Win8 is
getting a bit too visually difficult to use. For example, you can't
increase the font in the Metro interface at all if your monitor's
resolution isn't high enough.

No, the mac terminal isn't BSD. It has bits and pieces of BSD, but it is
different. I wish for my libraries to compile successfully on BSD, not
the cobbled mess OSX has put together.

2013-12-29 Thread Littlefield, Tyler

Hello all:
I'm sorry for the flood of questions. I heard garage band had a lot of
cool new stuff out, so I figured I'd give it a whirl. seems i need to
pay $5 for insturments and everything, so I click continue and voila, my
in-app purchase is... gone? It shows in the library, but I can't seem to
find it. I also read I get it free if I've recently purchased the IMac,
so I can't really tell. Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Thanks again for all the help,

Re: Amazon Prime is it worth it and are the videos accessible

2013-12-29 Thread Christina C.
I find the app on the iPhone to watch movies to be accessible. I do think the
app could be more accessible but I can find my way around with no real problems
and watch a movie. We have an apple TV device and we use air play to watch the
movies on our TV. I can’t see a darn thing but the family likes it on the TV
instead of the tiny screen on the iPhone. :) However, in my personal opinion, I
would not pay for prime just for the movies. :) They are a really great perk
and we do enjoy the choices but I would not pay for prime based on the prime
movies and shows. It’s super great to have, especially when we are bored or
don’t want to fork out any money to rent a movie. :) Plus, to my knowledge
there is no descriptive video service on the movies or shows and therefore, I
am lost half the time unless I have sighted assistance.

We love Prime and therefore, I personally believe it is worth it. I love to
say, Oh, I need this or that but can’t take a trip to the store. So, I get on
Amazon, order, then the package arrives quickly. Love it!

Re: Amazon Prime is it worth it and are the videos accessible

2013-12-29 Thread Brian Fischler
Thanks Christina. I would be making the jump to prime for the shipping speed,
and looked at the videos as a bonus as I canceled my Netflix due to zero
described video content. Figured Amazon didn't have any described video as none
of the streaming services offer DV, guess they figure blind people don't watch
movies. I view the movie streaming as a bonus, but did want to make sure I
could access it. Thanks

Re: virtualization solutions

Really?! Lately what I heard the virtual apps were not accessible. That’s why I
did a Dualboot to Windows 7 on my Mac.

I guess I’m going to look up Fusion. Is Parallel accessible too?

My goal is to have Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 and a Linux or two.

Does anyone have a link about everything about accessabilty for these virtual

Thanks!

New Twitter keyboard Shortcuts

2013-12-29 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Not sure how new this is but when I finished installing Mavericks I went to log
in to Twitter on the native website as I thought I had to, and the first thing
that popped up was a list of Twitter keyboard shortcuts on the website that I
have never used before. Is this new, new in Mavericks? If you are using the
website with VO how do you like the new shortcuts? I have always used
YoruFukurou for my Twitter needs. I did notice the constant new tweets
available would get old fairly quickly, but haven't looked yet to see if there
is a way to change that.

Hi,

This is a feature of the Twitter website, whatever OS you use. It works very
well for us, but in my view is not as efficient as Yoru. They do come in useful
from time to time though.

Make sure that you change the type to CD/DVD Master in the pop-up. Then you can

loading iPod shuffle from i tunes

2013-12-29 Thread jean parker
Hello All:

I have a new i pod shuffle and I want to put music on it which is contained in
my i tunes library. Since it is only 2 gb I want to choose which music I put
on it. So I played around with i tunes and somehow got music on the i pod but
not the selections I wanted. In fact, I don't know how I did it. Can someone
give me a step by step list of instructions about how to manage putting music
on my i pod? And, now I guess I will have to delete the music I don't want on
there before putting the one's I want on the i pod. Maybe I should just delete
everything?
All help is appreciated.
Jean

Re: Paprika clipping recipes

2013-12-29 Thread Alex Hall
I don't have the Mac app, but on iOS I copy the URL of the recipe to the
clipboard. When I open Paprika, it sees the Url and asks if I want to try to
save the recipe at that URL. I say yes, the page loads in the in-app browser,
and I hit the "save recipe" button. I believe the Mac app works similarly but
am not sure. Alternatively, again on iOS, just hit the browser item from the
main menu and navigate to the recipe in question, then use the "save recipe"
button.

Hi!
I found MacGourmet to be a lot more accessible. Mariner software sells it and
they are having a half off sale now through the end of the year I believe.

Paprika worth it (was Paprika clipping recipes)

2013-12-29 Thread Alex Hall
Oh goodie, another recipe manager! I started out with Pepperplate,
which is usable but not efficient. I now use Paprika, and love it, though I did
get it when it was half price a month or so ago. Pepperplate is free and has
the advantage of a website, so you can look up, add, or edit recipes from any
web browser and not just a Mac or iOS device signed into your Apple ID. Still,
the accessibility and ease of use of Paprika make it a more pleasant experience
for me.

Re: Paprika worth it (was Paprika clipping recipes)

2013-12-29 Thread Jim Gatteys
I've been using mac gourmet for about 5 years and it has undergone a lot of
changes. I really like it. It is an iTunes-like interface and they have
clipping capabilities from lots of sites, and if you buy the full version you
get menu planing, meal planning, nutrition info. Just from reading the reviews
it seems a bit more powerful than Paprika but whatever works.

Dictation in Mavericks

2013-12-29 Thread Brian Fischler
So I just installed Mavericks on my Mac Air, and have been pleasantly surprised
at the lack of headaches, as I have read about all the issues.

I tried using dictation, and have selected all the appropriate preferences and
installed the extra patch to allow offline dictation, and here is where it gets
hilarious. Every time I try and dictate a message in mail, dictation causes
mail to crash, tried it five times and mail crashed five times asking me if I
want to send an error report. Just wanted to see if others are having this
issue, or if anyone knows how to fix this. Thanks.
