Where iOS 7′s Dynamic Type Works and Where It Fails

2013-12-27 Thread Byron Lee
Hi guys,
I recently wrote a blog posting on my website about Dynamic Type on iOS 7.
This article is of particular interest to those of you with low vision. I
was wondering if you guys would take the time to read it and tell me what
you think.

http://lowvisionrants.com/2013/12/26/where-ios-7s-dynamic-type-works-and-where-it-fails/

I would also be interested in finding out how some of you make things
easier to see either on iOS 7 or Mac OS X. I recently bought a MacBook Air
and I am struggling with the change. I'll be writing a message regarding
that in a while.

Thanks,
Byron

Clean install of Mavericks OSX 10.9.1

2013-12-27 Thread Craig

Hello everyone.

I am about to take the plunge and update from mountain lion to Mavericks.

I will be doing a clean install.

1.Once I create the bootable disk, is it best to shut down the Mac and
then restart with the USB drive already inserted?

2.How would I know when to do command f5 to get voiceover started so
that I can work through the install process?

3.If and when OSX 10.9.2 is release, would I need to do another clean
install?

Thanks.

these days, common sense isn't enough. There are sites being infected with
multi-platform malicious code that can infect your machine on a "browse by"
session. Some flash on some sites can also infect your mac. We are no longer
the odd man out when it comes to malicious software of any kind (windows has
been losing the desktop/laptop market share for a long while now).

Most site operators either don't know or don't realize that their sites are
so vulnerable to attack (and very few even have the knowledge to secure
their sites). SO , as a result, infections among users of apple products has
been on the rise.

One of the best ways to prevent infections is to make sure you have
adequate protection. This includes: a anti-virus package, a firewall and
backups of your system (just in case).

SO far, the 2 best top a/v packages are: virus barrier and clamsav. Both are
accessible for the blind and both can be setup and configured for a variety
of tasks. There are several others, but their accessibility across platforms
for the blind is very limited.

Anyway, thats my take on the issue.

I'd recommend downloading virusBarrier (from the app store). Mac's however
don't generally get Viruses. You have a small chance of getting one if you
download a lot of 3rd party apps that you can't find in the app store, past
that it's unlikely.

Struggling as a low vision user of OS X

2013-12-27 Thread Byron J. Lee

Hey Guys,

I am really struggling as a low vision user of OS X. I know there is a
free Zoom feature and VoiceOver is a lifesaver as usual, but I am a
strange case when it comes to computing with limited vision. When I was
young I never had ZoomText or anything in the Windows world. I was
forced to adapt the computer to my needs on my own. I figured out a few
tricks like using the Extra Large theme in Windows XP (this feature
seems to be gone in Win7), lowering the resolution, DPI Scailing, and of
course, using CTRL + and - inside Firefox. I've never been a fan of
magnifying my screen because I am used to seeing everything on my screen
all at once. I prefer making the text bigger and using magnification
ONLY when there's a button or something that can't be modified and I
can't see what it is.

Now I own a MacBook Air because Windows 8 was even harder to modify than
Windows 7... and I don't see it getting any better. I think I made a
poor decision on my Mac, an 11-inch MacBook Air. The screen is small and
the text on it is tiny. I tried lowering the resolution but it doesn't
go very low. Also, sighted people tell me that the lower resolution
makes everything look like crap but I can't see the difference. I also
tried changing the DPI scailing but apparently Apple doesn't allow you
to do this without some developer tools like Xcode. I also tried a
program called TinkerTool but it didn't seem to make a damn bit of a
difference. I detected absolutely NO change after altering the settings.

I have figured out that Command + and - do change the text size on
certain things like e-mail and messages... but its still not quite big
enough for me. I also did a few things like turning on the feature that
magnifies your Dock, and increase the size of icons on my desktop, but I
have a very long way to go before everything looks right. Can anyone
recommend a tool or a method of enlarging text on the Mac without using
something like Zoom?

Thanks,
Byron

any A/V program set to scan on open will slow a machine down. you can set it up
to scan on a schedule or only look at specific filetypes. I use clamsav on a
once per week schedule here. most default settings are good enough for the
casual user and shouldn't present too many problems.

Hi,

Honestly, I’m not even sure if you need to do a clean install now. I personal
rather just upgrade, and then if I find myself having a lot of inexplicable

I'm not a low-vision user, so forgive my ignorance. Why does Zoom not work? If
you need the screen to be larger, then Zoom will do that. You can choose to
magnify the window or whole screen, how big you want it, and so on. Does Zoom
not enlarge things you need enlarged? Have you looked into AI Squared's screen
enlargement program for the Mac? I believe it is called Zoomtext.

Re: editing audio tracks on the mac

I use Audacity all the time with no problem. You need to download it from
audacity.sourceforge.net, not the App Store. However, once an audio file has
been saved, there is really not much you can do to improve its quality.
Normalizing affects volume, not quality, which is why you didn't notice much
difference.

VO always focusing on the toolbar?

2013-12-27 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Yesterday, when I booted the Mac, VO started doing something odd: auto-focusing
on the toolbar. If an app has a toolbar, it seems, VO jumps to it when the app

Zoom Text for mac is better i have read. I use Zoom Text, but have never

Hey Guys,

I am really struggling as a low vision user of OS X. I know there is a free

when it comes to computing with limited vision. When I was young I never had
ZoomText or anything in the Windows world. I was forced to adapt the computer
to my needs on my own. I figured out a few tricks like using the Extra Large
theme in Windows XP (this feature seems to be gone in Win7), lowering the
resolution, DPI Scailing, and of course, using CTRL + and - inside Firefox.
I've never been a fan of magnifying my screen because I am used to seeing
everything on my screen all at once. I prefer making the text bigger and using
magnification ONLY when there's a button or something that can't be modified
and I can't see what it is.

Now I own a MacBook Air because Windows 8 was even harder to modify than
Windows 7... and I don't see it getting any better. I think I made a poor
decision on my Mac, an 11-inch MacBook Air. The screen is small and the text on
it is tiny. I tried lowering the resolution but it doesn't go very low. Also,
sighted people tell me that the lower resolution makes everything look like
crap but I can't see the difference. I also tried changing the DPI scailing but
apparently Apple doesn't allow you to do this without some developer tools like
Xcode. I also tried a program called TinkerTool but it didn't seem to make a
damn bit of a difference. I detected absolutely NO change after altering the
settings.

I have figured out that Command + and - do change the text size on certain
things like e-mail and messages... but its still not quite big enough for me. I
also did a few things like turning on the feature that magnifies your Dock, and
increase the size of icons on my desktop, but I have a very long way to go
before everything looks right. Can anyone recommend a tool or a method of
enlarging text on the Mac without using something like Zoom?

Thanks,

I use to do podcasts on Mac stuff. Since my server crashed back in June or so,
most of my podcasts are gone. However, I will take the time to do a new podcast

As far as the hd goes, SuperDooper should backup the hole HD. From my
experience, SuperDooper does pretty well, and makes your destination drive
bootable, so you could boot off the destination drive.
My podcasts can be found at www.danielcproductions.net

I have seen this a few times, in general, it's best to disable the tool

new application.

Hi all,

Re: VO always focusing on the toolbar?

2013-12-27 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Funny thing about this is that in my Voice OVer preferences, I do have the
keyboard focused item as the default choice, and yet, when ever I check for
updates to the OS, always, I get focused on the tool bar.

Also, the search on the app store seems to not be focused on right away and so
you need to direct it there. This something anybody else noticed?

Re: Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

2013-12-27 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi everyone, thanks for all your feedback on how you use the voices.
Sean, I particularly like the way you described how you use the voice.
It makes sense.
You see, in the Windows world when using another screenreader I was able to
speed up the void up to 30% and still understand it. I kind of want to do that
but am a bit frustrated I can’t in case I’ll miss some important information.
Oh well, guess one can’t run before they can walk. lol
To Mike, at around what percentage do you use for your voices on your Mac to
listen to speech at a leisurely pace?

Again, thanks to everyone who has provided there input!

Once the bootable disk is created, you could always go the apple menu and click

When you boot into the boot disk, give it about a minute or two, then you can

Re: VO always focusing on the toolbar?

2013-12-27 Thread Alex Hall
My focus is already set to that. I've seen this once before, but have no idea
how I got rid of it. I could disable the toolbar, of course, but I'd rather
not. Usually, if nothing else, it holds a search field. Besides, would that
really help, or would vo just pick another random spot on which to set focus?
I've restarted a couple times, and also just restarted vo itself, but nothing.

Re: Using a sig line in mail.

2013-12-27 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Oh, this is something I hate! I've had the same problem and a couple of times
when I've upgraded all my signatures have gone over to All Signatures! It's
extremely irritating! I found a description of how you are supposed to be able
to drag and drop the signatures but have never been able to get it to work with
voiceover. At least signatures doesn't crash mail when you try to add one!
There was a long period of time when that happened.

The least painful way to get the signature where you want it that I have found
is to select and copy the text, then make sure you are on the account where you
want the signature in the table that shows all signatures and your accounts. Do
vo-space on add and then paste the text from the signature you created into the
text field; erase the default stuff if you don't want it. I've posted on
various lists over and over about this and have never found a way to simply
copy or move my signatures. For a while there was a way to do it by
manipulating things in your signatures folders in the actual Mail directory but
at some point an upgrade seems to have made that not work either.

Cheryl

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."

Re: VO always focusing on the toolbar?

2013-12-27 Thread Mike Arrigo
You might try going in to display in system preferences, and make sure
the resolution has not been changed to an odd setting.

Original message:
My focus is already set to that. I've seen this once before, but have
no idea how I got rid of it. I could disable the toolbar, of course,
but I'd rather not. Usually, if nothing else, it holds a search field.
Besides, would that really help, or would vo just pick another random
spot on which to set focus? I've restarted a couple times, and also
just restarted vo itself, but nothing.

That sort of configuration would be a very poor choice. As I said, you
really want two hard drives. Keep in mind that you can install a
second internal drive in your mac mini.

Have you tried repairing permissions and/or resetting the PRAM? When things get
weird, I always start by repairing permissions and, if that doesn’t work, I
reset the PRAM. Very few problems remain after that.

Re: Considerations for a Clean Install…

2013-12-27 Thread Nicholas Parsons
There's also iTunes Match for your Music and iTunes in the Cloud for your
purchased content. Other than that, an external HD or TimeMachine will have to
do. Most of the tagging is saved as metadata in the files themselves, so that
will be retained even after copying to an external drive and back. Some info,
however, such as play counts, ratings, and the media type (e.g. if you've
tagged mp3 files as audiobooks), is not stored in the file themselves. This
info is stored in an iTunes database, I believe in the "iTunes Library.rtl"
file. So as long as you save this file on your external disc as well, you
should be fine.

I will, however, qualify all this by saying I've always found backing up and
moving iTunes Library's to be a pain in the backside, and the one time I tried
to do just that it didn't work well at all, though it was a long time ago
before I knew what I know now. One of the most annoying things was that all my
audiobooks became music again, and I had to go back through them all and re-tag
them as audiobooks. So hopefully a certified iTunes expert like Esther or Tim
will jump in and provide a better and more authoritative explanation. There's
also plenty of Macworld and TidBits articles on this topic, so Google should be
able to help you out as well.

Cheers,
Nic

Re: command for app delete.

2013-12-27 Thread Nicholas Parsons
AppDelete Light is available from the Mac App Store at half the price of the
full version.

Most of these apps cannot be in the Mac App Store as they do not comply with
the App Store's rules on sandboxing. Their purpose is to find and remove files
related to other apps, and this process itself does not comply with sandboxing
rules. Hence AppDelete Light, and I suspect any other similar app in the Mac
App Store, can often only identify the related files that should also be
deleted along with the app, but cannot actually trash them for you. For this
reason I wouldn't really bother with them myself, as I want the app to just
trash all relevant files for me with no further input from me.

I tried CleanApp before, or perhaps it was App Cleaner, but whichever it was I
didn't find it very accessible. I've read reviews of these kinds of apps by
reputable sighted people, and AppDelete wasn't rated the highest, but I've been
really impressed with how easy and accessible it is.

If you do get AppDelete, I've found that I have to navigate to the app I wish
to delete, open the context menu, and choose AppDelete for it to work. Simply
pressing command-delete on the app doesn't seem to work for me.

What kind of Mac is it? If it's a Macbook, you might want to check both the
battery tab and power adapter tabs to ensure the settings are properly
configured for both.

Re: possible solution to the voiceover problem

2013-12-27 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I'm keen to try this, but what will be the effect of my hard disc not being put
to sleep when possible? Do you think this applies equally to SSDs, or is it
only spinning wheel hard discs? My MacBook Air only has an SSD, so if it only
applies to hard discs then it shouldn't affect me. How is the hard disc
sleeping different from the computer sleeping? Not sure if anyone has these
answers but if you do I'd be keen to know.

Thanks,
Nic

Re: Struggling as a low vision user of OS X

2013-12-27 Thread Byron Lee
The reason why I don't like ZoomText or any other magnification software is
because your mouse is like a camera that you have to move around the
screen... you may have a pop-up balloon or a flashing icon that you
wouldn't notice because you are zoomed in on an edit field and typing away.
Also, when reading a document you have to move your wrist back and forth,
back and forth, back and forth for each line. I hate this and I like just
hitting the down arrow to read. I normally just do CTRL + on apps that
support it and increase the fonts in apps that don't. Unfortunately there
are a lot of apps that don't support either function. I will download and
try ZoomText just so I know for sure that it won't work for me, but from
what I've seen on ZoomText for Windows it is not really what I wanna do.
I'd rather find a way to increase the DPI scailing or get the resolution
lower than what it's allowing me to do right now.

Thanks,
Byron

Amazon Prime is it worth it and are the videos accessible

2013-12-27 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I don't buy a lot but do buy almost everything through Amazon, and recently
paid for two day shipping, yeah I guess I am impatient when I want something. I
wanted to see if the people who are using Amazon Prime are liking it and felt
it was worth it. I think the shipping alone might make it worth it, but wanted
to see if the Amazon Instant Video was accessible on the iPhone, as I have read
conflicting reports. I know Amazon Instant Video doesn't offer any of their
titles with described video, but did want to see if the app works with VO.
Also, I thought I read that you can also get one book a month from the Kindle
lending group. Are people finding a wide variety of choices in this group, or
does it really just consist of books you would never read. Thanks.

wanted to see if the people who are using Amazon Prime are liking it and felt
it was worth it.
Thanks.

Same here. I haven't really tried anything with the instant video but to me the
free shipping and knowing when the package will come are worth it.

Re: Amazon Prime is it worth it and are the videos accessible

2013-12-27 Thread Jenny Wood
Hi there. I have had Amazon prime now for around two years, and it has been
worth every penny for the shipping alone. However, I have also recently begun
watching many Amazon videos, which I also enjoy as a benefit of the prime
membership. As to the accessibility of the videos, I can't really say. I have
been watching them via the Kindle Fire HDX, where I can tell you they are
definitely very accessible, but can't speak to Ios, windows or the mac.
Perhaps I will give it a try on my iPhone or macbook pro today and get back to
you. I have also taken advantage of the "kindle lending library," but to the
best of my knowledge, you can only "borrow "kindle books from a kindle device.

I created an Excel spreadsheet on my PC and saved it in my DropBox folder. I

and where do I go in system preferences to make the changes.

thanks in advance.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-27 Thread Mike Arrigo
Windows 8 is not any better for installing without sight than windows 7
was. You would need some kind of special install if you want to install
using boot camp. Alternatively, if you use fusion, you can install in
to a virtual machine instead, and fusion will allow you to install
windows without sighted help. I could comment on my thoughts about
windows 8 itself but that's not the point of this list. Suffice it to
say though that I think things are much more cumbersome than windows 7.

Original message:

Hi.

I know you cannot bootcamp a Mac to install Windows 7 without sighted
help. But what about Windows 8? Canyou get Narrator to start up at
installation? Also, has anyone tried using the talking Windows 7
installer to Bootcamp their Mac? Thanks much.

Re: Amazon Prime is it worth it and are the videos accessible

2013-12-27 Thread Traci Duncan
Our family has subscribed to Amazon prime off/on for a few years now. I’m not
sure if we’ll resubscribe this year.

One point I’ve liked about it, is sure 2 free day shipping, but there isn’t the
minimum $25 to spend. So, maybe the $80 membership fee comes out in the wash.

I find the instant video app fairly accessible, but lol, I can’t figure out how
to play a video. We mostly added videos to our watchList then watched them on
our TV. That part wasn’t accessible, it is a visio tv with little applets.

Good luck on your decision. I say, if money isn’t a great concern, go for it!
There’s a great freedom in that prime 2 day shipping. Also, only $3.99 for
next day or sometimes express same day delivery.

Re: Reading iBooks on the mac using braille display

2013-12-27 Thread Teresa Cochran

Hi, vic and andrew,

Actually iBooks is accessible with VO on the mac. Each chapter has its own
html content area, and once you interact with it, you can read using a
Braille display. Unfortunately, you can't use the keyboard shortcuts to go
to the next chapter in a predictable way. Going through the menu works
well. sometimes more than one chapter appears on the screen, with various
html content areas, which you have to interact with. It's not as intuitive
as it could be, but it is doable, and I've read several books this way.

Also, iBooks aren't synced with itunes anymore. They're synced with iBooks
on the device and the computer. you can set the sync options up in iTunes,
and make sure you sync books to your device, but once you do this, you'll
have to go through iBooks on the computer. If the books are being synced,
they'll simply show up in your iBooks library screen.

Hth,
Teresa

Control-f7 is a non-VO setting you can try. It toggles between having the

Hi all,
Yesterday, when I booted the Mac, VO started doing something odd: auto-focusing

there is some screen or display setting that got changed somehow. Can anyone
suggest anything I might try to fix this? Thanks.

Re: Changing Default Spreadhseet App On My Air when Opening A Excel Workbook

2013-12-27 Thread Phil Halton
I believe thats done in the info pane for the particular file. In the info
pane, you can set a particular file type, .xls in your case, to open with a
particular app, again, in this case, Tables.
Not sure on exactly how its done, but fiddle around with it and you'll probably
find easily enough.

 Hi.

holding down the option key when you hear the startup sound will bring
up your boot choices. Just right arrow or left arrow and then hit
 enter.

In startup disk under system preferences on mac, and, the bootcamp
control panel under windows, you can change your default startup disk.

 Cameron.

Re: Using a sig line in mail.

2013-12-27 Thread Nicholas Parsons
This has been covered several times on this list. You should be able to Google
the responses. Essentially, these are the steps:
• Navigate to the signature in All Signatures and mouse down with
VO-Command-Shift-Space.
• Turn curser tracking off.
• Navigate to the name of the account in which you want the signature and mouse
up with VO-Command-Shift-Space.
• YOu can now turn curser tracking back on and check that the signature has
populated the desired account.
Please note I have not tested this method in Mavericks.

It doesn't require it as much as windows, however, I would strongly recommend
its use. clamsav is a good free version and is also quite accessible. Believe
me, with the ever increasing popularity of apple products, its eventually going

Re: Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

Sorry, another newby question! Are there any other voices on the Mini besides
Alex, Vicky, Victoria, Fre? Alex sounds high quality, but the rest sound
compact. Am I missing some voices? Can I make the others besides Alex high
quality as on iPhone?

Re: Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

2013-12-27 Thread Matt Dierckens
Hi.
Yes, you ca download extra high quality voices.
Go to voiceover utility with CTRL Option F8. Go to the speech tab with Command
3.
Now go to the voices tab, and move to where it says, voice name, default voice.
Press spacebar, and choose customize.
Now you will be presented with a able where you can select the voices you would
like. Note that these voices are rather large, about 200 or 300 megs each.

Re: mini questions/mavericks and email

2013-12-27 Thread Alex Hall
Your Mini probably has Mavericks, but it may still have Mountain Lion. Press
ctrl-option-m, down arrow to "About this Mac", press enter, and move through
the resulting dialog with ctrl-option-right or left to find your OS10 version.
Hit escape to close it.

A commander is a way of assigning actions to keys or trackpad gestures. I'd
suggest getting comfortable with Voiceover's basics before delving into
commanders.

3. In Mail, press command-n to make a new message. Mail's preferences are
accessed with command-comma, as are the preferences in most every Mac app.

Re: Anyone else Notice Gmail Acting Funky, no Matter the Mail App?

2013-12-27 Thread Pete Nalda
I've noticed gmail to be pretty slow to sync when my mbp has b been asleep for
a while, and my archive folder on said machine STILL has 1600 messages, when my
iPhone has like maybe 30.

Re: "Apple submenu" message, gets quite annoying...

2013-12-27 Thread Vic
The checkbox was already unchecked. Will be looking for other culprits.

Thanks,
Victor

Re: Reading iBooks on the mac using braille display

2013-12-27 Thread Vic
Hello Teresa!
I did not realize this part, however, choosing the books still remains to
be a problem. At least in my case, VoiceOver does not announce the names of
the book samples, books or PDF documents stored in my library.
Is this the experience you have?

Re: Reading iBooks on the mac using braille display

2013-12-27 Thread Teresa Cochran

Hi, Vic,

If you switch to list view in the library, this helps a lot. You can then
press return on the title of a book.

HtH,
