advantages and disadvantages of using a braille display
Hi all, I’m looking into perhaps using a braille display with my mac. for a long time I couldn’t see much point of a braille display because you’ve got the voice, so there’s no need for the braille. however, I’ve recently changed and see there are times where using a display can be good. Especially with my Iphone. I’ve tried turning the speech off and using the display to remotely control my phone and read the display. This has been good in noisy environments where others are around and having the phone’s speech muted and me using the display is nice. You can also be private if you wish. I for those who are experienced braille display users, apart from the advantage of not having to worry about headphones, which can be annoying at times I find when using the computer. One obvious advantage is no head phones. what are other advantages and disadvantages of using a braille display with a mac? how about having speech and braille at the same time, or muting speech? and do people usually leave the display connected all the time? if so, why? and if not, why not? and if not, what specific reasons do you connect your display. Thanks in advance for any answers. Readkit question (was Looking for Mac RSS reader)
Thank you for the tip! I'm glad you told us the sale was happening - I just got the app and am trying it now. There are a lot of unlabeled buttons, but they all have help tags. The only thing is, Lire on iOS does not sync anywhere, so I'll need to find a reader that does or bug Lire's dev about adding that. There's no way I'm going to live with two repeated RSS streams! A quick question about Readkit: I can't add subscriptions! I see that "add feed subscription" is dimmed, and only "add smart folder" is not. How, then, do I add RSS feeds to this app? Thanks. Great, thanks. Re: advantages and disadvantages of using a braille display
Well, for me, the Braille display is very useful, because I process information better by reading than by listening. I also have a slight hearing impairment, and get S’s and F’s confused with speech. I like to read with a braille display. I do a lot of reading while listening to baseball and hockey games, and using speech while listening to games is a bit difficult. With many displays, if you keep them on UsB, they’re also powered as long as the computer is on. I have a display that uses either Bluetooth or USB, so I alternate between the two. I find a display much easier for editing. I really hate going character by character using speech, and the braille makes it much easier to proofread. It really depends on what you prefer. I have always preferred braille to speech, so a display was a no-brainer for me. About fifty percent of the time, I use braille to augment speech, I read in bed a lot, too, and I can use the display with my iPod and not have to use headphones or disturb my husband. Re: google drive app for mac
Hi, when you are logged into your Google Drive, and within the Drive window, Google usually promotes itself right there. It normally says something about Download Google Drive for Mac. If that isn’t showing up for you, just do a Google search on Google Drive for Mac and you’ll be able to download and install it easily. If you’re using Mountain Lion or earlier, there is a Google Drive Contextual menu item that allows you to share and such without having to open your browser. This functionality is broken in Mavericks but Google is aware of the issue and working on it as far as I’m aware. I just recently had this weird issue with theunarchiver not wanting to extract 7zip files, which it never had an issue with before, and VO won't read me what the error message is, so I have no idea as to what's going on here. ReadKid question
Hello everyone, I have downloaded ReadKit, and have installed it successfully. However,, after logging into Instapaper, I am not able to view any of my saved articles when selecting the “read later” option in the first table. Does anyone have suggestions on what I am not doing correctly? Thanks for any help anyone can provide. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Looking for Mac RSS reader
Another good, open source, free RSS reader for the Mac is Vienna. I use it and it syncs with open reader services such as The Old Reader and Bazqux. It is very good. On Nov 30, 2013, at 10:25 PM, Nicholas Parsons wrote: You might also like to try ReadKit. • It can sync with plenty of services, e.g. FeedWrangler; • Just press G to read full text of articles in Readability mode; • It has customisable short cuts for all popular sharing and read later services – e.g. I just press Command-Shift-D to add to Apple Reading List, Control-T to tweet and control-F to share on Facebook; • It's available through the Mac App Store and is currently 70% off. I then use Mr Reader on my iPad—it's brilliant, even better than NewsRack. On 30 Jan 2013, at 3:36 PM, Mike M wrote: Hi folks, The subject says it all. I’m looking for something to replace NewsRack. My guess is they are like emoticons. I don’t know, but it’s annoying having to listen to them. external drives
Hey again everyone. One more question for tonight. I will be getting an IMac next month and I have a 3tb drive that is currently attached to my windows machine. Is there a way to make the drive mac ready and not lose everything that’s on it? Re: Calendar on the Mac
Once you find Calendar, I suggest you use it in month view. You can select month view from the view menu, or press command-3. I personally find month view the most useful with VoiceOver, but others might differ. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Readkit question (was Looking for Mac RSS reader)
There's two ways to add feed subscriptions. The first way is to add them through a syncing service like FeedWrangler or FeedBin, and sync these with ReadKit. This is the best way as it allows you to sync your feeds with your iOS device. The second way is to just click on an RSS link in your web browser of choice. I know at least with Safari when I do this ReadKit automatically pops up and asks if I want to subscribe to the feed. I also recommend taking your time to explore the preferences. There are some great customisable settings in there, including the options to easily add short cut keys. Some short cuts which are worth knowing are G, to view the article in full text readability mode, and shift-A, to mark all as read. For iOS, I highly recommend Mr Reader for iPad. It can sync with ReadKit through services like FeedWrangler. I haven't found anything great for iPhone. FeedWrangler for iPHone is accessible and useable, but not particularly enjoyable to use. Re: ReadKit rss reader and adding feeds
Hi, I replied to Alex's post on the same topic so I won't fully repeat myself here. For full info, see that thread. However, basically you need to either use a syncing service such as FeedWrangler or FeedBin to manage your feeds and then sync that with ReadKit (which is the preferred solution), or find an RSS feed in Safari and click on the link. ReadKit should pop up automatically and ask if you want to add the feed, unless you have another RSS Client set to be the default RSS client. Re: Readkit question (was Looking for Mac RSS reader)
Thanks for the response. It is odd that there is an option to add a subscription, but it is unavailable. I am really hoping that Lire adds syncing support; I sent them an email today asking about it, so hopefully something will happen soon. Expanding a Folder
I am missing something. I have opened my Buffalo drive and selected a Folder called Data with the cursor. I tried VO Shift down Arrow to see subfolders. I can not see any subfolders; just a rename text field. How would I open the Data Folder to see subfolders and then go into the subfolder to find the file I wish to use KeyNote With? Thank you.
