Accessibility of Facebook with voiceover
Dear Listers, I know this topic has been widely discussed on the list, and I have always been following it with interest and with dismay. Many of my friends all over the world in other than English speaking countries have been urging me to contact and follow them on facebook. I know that facebook website have largely been ignoring our accessibility needs. I'd love to hear - if it is too much on the list than off list - from those of you who would have a few moments to tell me what your experience currently is, and to offer some advice on which platform it would be best to manage facebook, with voiceover either on the mac or iOS, and whether there may be special applications that might facilitate facebook. Or indeed, in desperation, if you have such experience, whether facebook is more accessible via Windows, and in such a case, whether NvDA screen reader has anything to offer. I know from the various posts that a few people on the list have to juggle Windows and mac platforms in order to accomplish what they need. Many thanks Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Accessibility of Facebook with voiceover
Hello; from what i have been hearing on this list and others windows users are having an easier time of it than mac users. however, there is a new ap for the iOS devices that seams to be getting good reviews. and since mountain lion is supposed to resemble iOS, there is hope in my opinion of a working Facebook ap for MacBooks soon. for me personally i do most of my interaction by email notification. I have everything from friend requests to group posts sent to my email inbox. In most cases i can just click reply and write my comments. However, this doesn't work with everything. if you aren't subscribed to a friends feed, then you don't get his or her posts. I will generally go to the Facebook site to post status updates, upload photos or videos, and to post to my groups. this isn't all that difficult as long as you remember that wherever you see a selection box that is probably an edit field. but the truth is until we can get fb to settle on a design we are never going to have full accessibility. hopefully, the continuing dissatisfaction from sighted users about all the constant changing will help with that. best of luck, max On Mar 18, 2013, at 7:32 AM, Andrew Lamanche wrote: > Dear Listers, > I know this topic has been widely discussed on the list, and I have always > been following it with interest and with dismay. Re: Accessibility of Facebook with voiceover
I have a bit of a different opinion on this issue. I don't think Facebook is inaccessible. It's annoying, and inconvenient, but far from inaccessible. I can do everything on it that I need to do, but some of the popup menus are a bit strange, as you either have to press tab or go to the end of your displayed text. I've experience inaccessible programs. To me, those allow no access to interfaces or text. The Facebook website is almost entirely legible with a web browser. The app for IOS that is the easiest to use is Voicebook. It doesn't have all the Facebook features, but you can read others' statuses and post your own. multiple languages at once?
Hi all, I've got a potential client who wants to use english and greek on a mac. I Did some poking around. I installed the greek vocalizer voice and i set up the greek keyboard. I also put languages into my extras menu so I can go in and switch keyboards. Is there any way to add more functionality? For example, I'm assuming I can add a keystroke to switch input methods? What about detecting languages on the fly? If an email is written in greek and tagged appropriately will voiceover automatically switch to the greek voice and start reading? if theres a webpage with both greek and english on it will the english be read by alex and the greek by the greek voice? Is there a guide or something somewhere on multi-language support? Re: Question about playing Youtube videos with safari.
I wonder if it doesn't depend on whether the video is being played by Flash or HTML5. Flash is not accessible while HTML5 is. I have opted in for HTML5 video when possible by going here: http://www.youtube.com/html5 but there are still some videos that play with the Flash interface because of some weird codec they use or advertising requirements. Re: multiple languages at once?
Hello Erik, First of all, there is no automatic language-switching on the Mac. However, it's very quick to switch voices with VO-Cmd-Down Arrow. I do this uncountable times every day between English and French. To switch everything at once (speech, keyboard, Braille and any other settings) the best way is to set up appropriate activities. Re: multiple languages at once?
Hello Erik, You don't need a podcast to set up an activity. Go into VoiceOver Utility, Activities category, and click the Add button. You'll be on a text field where you enter the name for the activity. You then go right to "Choose settings to include in this activity:". To the right is a series of check boxes to select the settings yu wish to include. Hi there To make a transformat in TextEdit first select all your text with command a. At this point, make sure you don't press the delete key. Go with the right arrow to edit and go down arrow until you hear transformations submenu. Press the right arrow key and you want to go down arrow until you hear make lowercase press the return key. You will be taking back to your file so press the upper down arrow key here something to make sure that you an highlight things. Rabbit TV
Hi guys, I was just reading about something on the internet called Rabbit TV. Has anyone heard of this and would know whether or not it is a scam? Apparently it is supposed to be a USB drive that you plug into your computer and it gives you access to thousands of TV streams for only $10. I am just curious if anyone has heard of it and knows whether it would be accessible with a screen reader. It supposedly works on both Mac and PC. VO reading entire text document.
I'm trying to have VO read from position to end of document in both text edit and iText pro and am having no luck. I'm interacting with the text and can easily do vo a or a 2 finger swipe up in touch pad commander but if I try vo b I get a bong and if I do a 2 finger swipe down in touch pad commander it reads the current page but I have to restart each new page. I can't seem to find a relevant option in the options menu for commanders or in vo so wondered if I'm missing something. Is there a ML preference for scrolling or something that can help? Bullet points in Pages
Hello, I have made a Pages document containing my resume, and instead of making the bullet points manually, I realized I could select the text to be bulleted and choose to have it be a bulleted list. I chose text bullets, and went on my way, and this all works well. I verified the bullets were there by using New TextEdit Window Containing Selection. Apparently, however, if text wraps to a second line in a bulleted list, the second line of text is positioned under the bullet rather than at the start of the text above, which is what is desirable, most of the time. Should I select something for text indent under the Inspector, or what might I may I be missing? Re: zoomEx help.
To anyone else using this, do you know if there's a way to edit scanned material that may only have 1 or 2 errors in it so you don't have to go back and rescan it all over again. I have a children's bible I got when I was 8 that I've been trying to scan for ages and I can scan a page and find an error or 2 on it that I'd rather correct than try to scan and rescan the page all over again which in my oppinion wastes time considering the fact that the bible is obviously a long book. When the guy demonstrating it used his laptop showed me how, the "control+l," command toggled it on and off, and I can't remember if he said the command or control key was supposed to do this with the mac, and I've tried both, and neither of these seem to work. Re: Rabbit TV
I would stay away from that thing for several reasons. 1. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Most of that crap I have seen may offer many channels, how many of them could you understand? You are better off subscribing to hulu, or netflix. Run the other way from scams like that & any other ones like it. Pam Francis On Mar 18, 2013, at 4:10 PM, Juliette wrote: Hi guys, I was just reading about something on the internet called Rabbit TV. Re: Accessibility of Facebook with voiceover
So do I. When I search for people, I can arrow To the list of people, and voiceover reads them just fine. And then I can select the person. Also, I can make posts, delete posts, share things, and everything that a sighted person would be able to do.
