Re: An introduction

2013-03-10 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Brandt,

In Pages, as in almost all text editors in Mac OS X, there is a problem
navigating tables. What you have to do is to interact with the text area, the
body I should think in your case, and navigate just using the arrow keys. When
you hear "Space, highlighted", open the inspector (Cmd-Option-i) and select the
3rd button, Wrap. Then navigate right to the radio buttons and select Floating.
Hide the inspector (Cmd-Option-i) and your table will be editable and shows up
as an additional item on the page.

Cheers,

Anne

For free solutions, I use the radio and iTunes and piano pub for Pandora. I
also think TuneIn radio has a website that works pretty good with voiceover. I
really like radium though as you mentioned it is a paid app, but it works
great. I really like how it is not in the command tab sequence. It just stays
up in the extras menu.
Sorry I don't have something more in line with what you were asking for. Good
luck. Rod

Facebook Frustration Revisited: Is It My Imagination, or . . .

2013-03-10 Thread Christine Grassman
Have both the iPhone FB app and the mobile site morphed yet again into
something unnecessarily problematic for those of us who use VoiceOver? I know
several here have said that with some patience, they are usable, but you know
what? I should not require any more patience and time to figure out the latest
changes than the average sighted user, and I am about ready to deactivate my
account. Much smaller companies with significantly fewer resources can make
their apps and sites easily accessible -- why not Facebook? It is more
principle than anything else at this point. I have gone from using FB daily
when I first joined, keeping up with far-flung family and friends, to feeling
as if it is a chore each time. I doubt that is the user experience most
companies are striving toward.

I don't know of any special VO shortcuts, but there is a few in preferences
you can activate. For example, anywhere, I can press command shift x, and it
will pause/play the stream. You can change the volume in more options pop up
button. Interact with headphones and VO right arrow. Interact with the volume
slider. It has built-in air play support, so you can change the volume of air
play speakers separately.
My favorite feature is SiriusXMsupport. Sure beats the online player.
Good luck,

Re: Facebook Frustration Revisited: Is It My Imagination, or . . .

2013-03-10 Thread Teresa Cochran
Not to make light of the accessibility issue, but I can assure you that all the
sighted folks I know who use it are constantly ticked off by the interface
changes. My sighted husband is always grumbling about it all. I think that
there's an uneasy balance between making it useable by millions of people and
the amount of tweaking most folks will put up with before they give up. Because
so many use it in their everyday lives, they grumble about it and keep using it
anyway. I admit that I do this still.

The integration of interfaces, making the mobile sites and apps and the full
sites more similar to each other, is something Apple is also doing with its OSs.

We'll just have to see how it all plays out. Facebook is a corporate entity
that sells a service and they will do what they want with it, for the most part.

Re: Radio player for Mac

2013-03-10 Thread Brandt
Hi there,

I just went and bought radium from the Mac App Store.

The latest version of radium is just such a beautiful experience. Everything is
simple and smooth, with a very clean Interface.

The amount of buttons, is still the same, though, you would find that you have
to interact quite a bit more than you use to.

For example, the stations table use to have two columns. On the left, you had
checkboxes for adding or removing stations from the favorites. Now, you have a
list of groups, with two buttons in each. One being a listen button, and the
other being a button, which could be add, or remove station from favorites.

Warm regards,

Brandt Steenkamp

I love stanza

2013-03-10 Thread Maria & Joe Chapman
HI guys.

I found another use for stanza. I have a pdf with recipes in it. the recipes
read really strange with preview. The ingredients were in one column and
amounts in another etc. I think you kind of get the picture. I was going to
launch windows and see if I could get any sense out of adobe reader, but before
that, I thought I'd convert the document to epub using stanza and see how it
then read in itext express. Ok, this isn't perfect everything is on one line
instead of having blank lines between each ingredient, but at least I can now
read it, do a bit of editing and perhaps put the recipes in paprika. When I
first got stanza I got it just in case, now I'm not only converting things to
epub so I can read them on the iPhone/ipad but it's helping with troublesome
pdf files.

Blessings! Maria Joe and loving guide Karly.

Prescription Labeling for Blind and Low Vision: Public hearings to determine our future!

2013-03-10 Thread Nancy M

*What:* The US Access Board Working Group on Accessible Prescription Labels
is holding open meetings to determine best practices for labeling
prescriptions for the blind and visually impaired.

*When:* Monday, March 18 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Eastern Time

*Where:* Telephone 888-603-7094, passcode 6317703. Dial in any time
during the meeting; the public comment period is anticipated to start
between 4:15 and 4:30 pm Eastern time.

*Why:* Prescription information should be accessible to everyone,
regardless of vision condition.

The board is not, at this time, considering codes that can be read by
mobile devices such as the iPhone or Android and it is not considering
mobile technology as an option for label reading or recording. We believe
that this is an option that should be included in the recommendations
because of its convenience, low cost of implementation, power and
portability.

We encourage you to find out more about this committee and to consider
giving some input on the topic because the results almost certainly will
determine how your prescriptions are labeled in the future.

For more information, read on!

*How does the Working Group affect you?*

The US Access Board Working Group on Accessible Prescription Labels is
holding hearings to determine best practices for labeling prescriptions
for the blind and visually impaired.

The working group is a public body and meetings are open to the public.
So, if you want to participate and make your opinions known, you have a
chance to do so!

The next meeting is scheduled Monday, March 18 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm ET.
The Access Board will be specifically discussing audio labeling of
prescriptions. The document they are working from is here:

http://www.access-board.gov/drug-labels/practices-summary.htm

And the hearing will start with the line titled “*Practice of Providing
Audible Labels -- Digital voice recorders attached to a prescription drug
container”*

The committee typically discusses their document and then saves the last 30
or 45 minutes for a “Public Forum” and open the phone lines for public
comments.

The dial-in number is 888-603-7094 and the pass code is 6317703. You can
dial in any time.

We'd like to encourage people who are interested in mobile solutions to
attend the next meeting by phone and speak up for the option of including
mobile technology as one of the audio options.

We recommend that you prepare a short statement to read to the committee
that says something to the effect:

“My name is _ and my vision condition is . I
use the iPhone and other mobile technology in my daily life *(give examples
as to why it is useful*). I believe that the commit should include the use
of labeling that can be read and voiced by mobile devices such as the
Android or iPhone because (state your reason for wanting mobile technology
included – we believe it is a useful solution because it means we don’t
have to carry around a bulky reader or use a special recorder and can just
use the same convenient prescription bottles that everyone else uses!)

It is not all that common for us, as citizens, to be able to influence the
course of legislation, but this is a great opportunity to speak up and say
what *we* want and how *we* want it!

*Using Labels Readable with Digital Technology*

At this time, the committee is considering only existing solutions such as
bottle recorders and ScriptTalk. We believe that it is in everyone’s best
interest to understand that there is no single good solution to making
prescription labels accessible and that the range of solutions should
include the use of labels (QR code and other) that can be read by devices
such as the iPad, iPod, Android or iPhone.

Here is a sample pharmaceutical label that can be printed on a simple,
inexpensive round label and fitted on the bottom of a standard 40ml
prescription bottle.
http://www.digit-eyes.com/graphics/pharma-see/sampleLabel1.png

The code above can be scanned and voiced with any QR code scanning app on
the iPhone, Android or other device that can read and voice QR codes. You
can, for instance, read it with the free version of Digit-Eyes:

https://appstore.com/digiteyeslite

As shown in the sample label, the content can include personalized
information about the prescription as well as a link to the authoritative
source of information about the medicine in the bottle (in this case, a
sample penicillin label, a link is included to the Medline Plus page for
the specific formulation in the bottle.)
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a685015.html

The advantage of this type of labeling is straightforward: for people who
have a phone that can scan codes, no bulky reader or awkward addition to
their pill bottle is needed. The “reader” is

Hi.

Stanza is good enough when you know its limitations, one of them is mobi files,
not all of the text will be shown in stanza, and then be converted to epub,
only to let you know.

I sometimes use stanza for PDF files, but it is old and will not be updated
anymore.

Yep, I really like Radium too. My only suggestion would be to make organizing

time. Drag and Drop did not work very well. Small issue though compared to how
much I use the app and how much I like using it!

I also think TuneIn radio has a website that works pretty good with
voiceover. I really like radium though as you mentioned it is a paid app,
but it works great. I really like how it is not in the command tab
sequence. It just stays up in the extras menu.
Sorry I don't have something more in line with what you were asking for.

Re: accidental keystroke found with the logitech 811

If you don't have the keyboard manager from logitech installed, just push f1,
f2, or f3. If you have the tool installed, then push fn plus 1 of the above
keys, and you will switch just fine.

Re: [BlindTech] Tap Tap See.

2013-03-10 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I really like the TapTapSee program. My husband wasn't home and I need to find
out what was in this bottle in the refrigerator. After taking a picture, the
answer came back that it was ranch dressing. I will add that I tried to scan
for barcode, but couldn't find the thing.
Here's my question I wanted to give the TapTapSee people a $20 dollar donation
as it suggested in this message that I got. I think they deserve it. However,
when I activated the link that was in this message, it didn't work. Michael
since you sent this message, what should I do if this link doesn't work?
Regards,
Gigi

Rather than just give you the answer, here is your chance to learn about
searching the archives. This particular topic comes up often so if you
search the list you'll probably find what you need. Google of course
provides way to do this as part of the Google Groups service but a
