Word Count in Pages

2013-02-28 Thread Les Kriegler
A student of mine wishes to obtain Word Count for a document. I say in
Preferences that this information is displayed at the bottom of the window.
How does one access this information? Thanks.

Hello,

I believe you can do this but, you need to install a syncing tool from Apple.
The name of it escapes me but, a google search should get you pointed in the
right direction.

More on Firefox

2013-02-28 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi,

Well, I just have some key remapping to do on Webvisum and I'm all set.
Firefox is still a little buggy and not yet ready for prime time: however, in
a moment of necessity, such as captcha solving, yeah, I can see where it has
it's place. Once Mozilla fixes the dialogs and tex areas and tables and so
forth, Firefox will become my browser of choice.

Oh, just one more thing. My firefox must not be properly updating itself.
When I open the about Firefox window, it informs me that I have 20.0 and I
noticed that some of y'all are reporting version 22.0. How y'all get that
version? I've got the radio button pressed for automatic updates; but, it
don't seem to work, or else, I can't press the radio buttons in that area of
the prefs window.

Thoughts?

Re: Is one password worth the $50?

2013-02-28 Thread Rod Skene
There is a trial you can download from their website. It is a full trial with a
15 or 30 day limit. I decided to purchase from the app store after using the
trial. I did not learn the program and one sitting, but before the trial was
done, I felt very confident using most elements of the program. Except for the
Safari extension of course. The extension is not necessary to use the program.

Hi Les,

To get to word count in pages, do the following:
Open the inspector with command+option+I. You'll then vo+left arrow and see a
series of radio buttons. Choose the one labeled "document."
Then, you'll vo+right arrow to the info tab and select it. If you vo+Right
arrow through, you'll see something that says "words…" and the number of words
your whole document contains. If you want to know how many words a section of
your document has, just select it as normal, and do the steps outlined above.

Re: More on Firefox

2013-02-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
As I recall saying in one of my posts, though I did not explain the term,
version 22 is "nightly". That means you have to go to the website and look for
the nightly build if you want it, The nightly builds are the latest and are
experimental and therefore would not be part of your update. So probably your
version number is correct.

Re: Clam sav question

2013-02-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again Ray.
I understand what you say about the folder path, no problem. But what I still
don't get is how to tell ClamXav to do this automatically. I went to the
toolbar under Preferences and found schedule. I also found the table that lists
things like Documents and some other folders on the hard drive. When I find the
entry in Preferences that says "With this ticked, if ClamXav encounters any
files which contain email, they will be scanned. You still need to point
ClamXav at your email folder for this option to make any difference!" that one
is checked. What else do I need to do?
I'm sorry if I seem dense here, but I'm not sure if I need to do anything else.
Thanks.

Re: Facebook Chat with VoiceOver

2013-02-28 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Brian

Ok, you first have to have your Facebook username. This is not the email
address you typically use to log into Facebook. You'll have to go to your
Facebook account to find it. Once you have it, you put it in the username field
of the jabber account this way:
usern...@chat.facebook.com
and put your user name in place of "username".

Then you put your password in. There's a disclosure triangle for server
settings, but in most cases, you won't need to set those up. However, you can
try this page for more info:
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/facebook-chat-macosx/

It's a little dated, but the info is still good. :)

Braille terminal/display is pretty spectacular.

Now, all we need to do is get Kindle books on board … :-(

Sincerest thanks,

Mike

Hey Teresa, Thanks so much, as I believe I got logged in as it took me
awhile to find my proper facebook name. Now I just need to find a how

computer is making some new sound effects. Also is there an easy way
to see what buddies are online? Figured I would ask about that, but
going to do a google search for it now. Thanks again for your reply.

Re: is this possible?

2013-02-28 Thread Erik Burggraaf
Hi, I could do the job with my windows vm and a hard drive connector cable that
I keep around for the process. If you are in ontario, let me know and i'll
quote you a price.

Otherwise, you can buy the cable for $25 in a canada computers, and you can buy
security software that is up to the clean-up, and assuming you have a windows
instalation on your mac, it would be an easy process if time-consuming.

I don't know of any mac app that can clens windows malware. The linux version
of nod32 used to be able to clean up windows instalations. You could always
get a linux box I suppose.

Hope this helps,

Re: Facebook Chat with VoiceOver

2013-02-28 Thread Brian Fischler
Does anyone know of a how to guide to using Facebook chat with
Messages. I have all these new sound effects would like to know what
they are. Also can't seem to find any list of my facebook friends or
who is online when using messages. I did try and send a message to a
friend of mine, and the to field did get his name, but when I tried
sending I got a message that so and so Facebook.com is not registered
with Imessage. Do people actually have to authorize their facebook
accounts to work with Imessage for you to send them a message? It
seems that would defeat the whole point of it, as most sighted people
aren't going to do that. Thanks for any help

RE: frustrated with mail

2013-02-28 Thread Jesus Garcia
Evening if you can find someone willing to spend the time I certainly would
love a few pointers regarding mail, not having as many issues as you seem to
be having, but I am certain I am not doing all I can to make mail simple and
easy with voice over. For anyone thinking of doing a good tutorial in any
format you have a certain customer I would be more than happy to pay upwards
of $50.00 for a good solid tutorial on best practices for mail using voice
over. I am currently working my way through taking control of mail in
mountain lion and though a few pointers have already made things a little
easier this is not a book written with a voice over user in mind.

Re: Facebook Chat with VoiceOver

2013-02-28 Thread Brian Fischler
Ok I seem to be able to send messages to Iphones using Imessage, but
it almost seems like messages isn't differentiating between an
Imessage and Facebook chat, as I keep getting an error message anytime
I try to send a message to someone on facebook it says X account isn't
registered with Imessage. I figured I had to look at who was available
online in buddies then go to all contacts and find them there, there
is a button there as there is not one on the buddies list. I click
that it selects who to send the message to but keep getting the error
message for anyone on FB. Would love to hear what I might be doing
wrong, as if this works it would be fantastic. Thanks

RE: frustrated with mail

2013-02-28 Thread Jesus Garcia
Evening I think my first question is to stick to the classic format or go
with the new format which is better for a voice over user? Also, what is the
best way to organize the different mail boxes I have three accounts not
counting work. My original home email is a bellsouth.net account which was a
pop3 account. I have an apple account which naturally is set up for iCloud
configuration it is the only one that receives both on the mac and my phone.
And the gmail account. I would like to be able to quickly and easily move
from box to box and arrow up and down through the message list deleting what
I do not want. Last for now a quick set of short cut keys for sending a
message and getting mail without having to navigate to the tool bar.

Re: is this possible?

2013-02-28 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
If you're not sure what's going on, I have generally found it worth
taking some sort of camera, whether on the iPhone or on Skype, and
calling someone. Point the camera at the screen and have the person
you call tell you what's on the monitor. They may not be able to see
it easily, though I have almost always found that there is no issue in
seeing the text, and it may be too much of a pain to walk through a
fix while pointing a camera at the screen, but the point is just to
see whether it's a quick fix which can be managed remotely or if
there's something more serious wrong. This is one of those things that
I really hate about being blind around most computers, there's
sometimes no way to distinguish between the volume being muted and the
hard drive no longer reading. That is, every event that causes trouble
on boot is a major event, no matter if it's really quite easy to fix.

Re: Need some pointers on using Dropbox

2013-02-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
Drop box is a bit nonstandard, it does not show up in your command tab list of
apps. You need to press VO m twice to get to the status menus, then navigate
left and right through the items, drop box should be one of them. You need to
use the VO navigation here, using the reguar arrow keys will only take you to
the built in apple status items rather than all of them. I think this is a bug
in the operating system that's been there for some time, but the voiceover keys
will get you to the item you want.

reading iBooks on braille display, was Pairing BrailleNote Apex and iPhone 4S

2013-02-28 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi Mike
Just wondering whether you have noticed this weird issue with braille from some
ibooks not displaying correctly. Whenever there is an open double quotation
nmark followed by a word, the whole string displays as weird characters which
are incorrect. It doesn't happen with closing quotation marks which is odd.
I've reported this to Apple but wonder if you or others have seen this issue.
It doesn't happen in all iBooks. It makes reading many books impossible,
especially if there is a lot of dialogue.
Just wondering if others have seen this and reported it to Apple.

Size of albums & playlists in iTunes

2013-02-28 Thread Traci
Hi all,

I'm having a hard time finding the size of albums & playlists in iTunes. I see
number of songs & length of time, but where has the memory size gone? It would
be helpful to know, if I can sync a particular playlist or album onto my
Shuffle. :)

Thanks,

Re: Is there a music program that allows working with midi files.

2013-02-28 Thread Phil Halton
GarageBand would allow for deleting a track, transposing keys, changing
tempos and instrument assignments. It does not allow for any note editting,
(note editting is possible, but not accessible with VoiceOver).

I have never tried to load an existing midi (.mid) file into GB, but have
always created my software tracks (midi) in GB. I don't even know if that
can be done. it might require pasting the midi data from the clipboard, but
I'm not sure on that.

Hi.

Is there any accessible music program that allows playing and editing a
little in midifiles. I would like to transpose change tempo, and delete an
instrument or change an instrument to another instrument.

Best regards Annie.

Can anyone help with mail

2013-02-28 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,
I need some serious help with the apple mail client. It quite simply isn't
fetching email, or even better, it's fetching selected email.
I'm about ready to give up on this thing. It has never worked since I
bought this mac. I can send messages all day, but forget retreiving. I have
to do it on the pc.
I was even on the phone with apple and all the setting look correct. Yet I
have sent literally 12 mewsages to myself, and didn't get a single 1 on the
mac, but they all came through on the pc?
Any ideas guys?

Re: frustrated with mail

2013-02-28 Thread Alex Hall
Add accounts in preferences (cmd-comma), under the accounts tab. Once added, I
am not sure what happens as I only use my one gMail account, but I think you
will have multiple account names under your inbox, sent, and other folders. You
can drag any folder you wish to the favorites bar, to get access to them with
cmd-1 through cmd-0. For instance, my inbox is cmd-1, my apple folder is cmd-2,
my drafts is cmd-3. Again, I do not use multiple accounts so cannot say for
certain what will happen, but give it a shot and then explore the mailboxes
table to see how things are set up. You may also want to investigate smart
mailboxes on google, as they may help you here.

The classic layout is, in my opinion, confusing and not worth it. The standard
one is much better and easier to navigate. On a related note, while you are
setting that in mail preferences' "viewing" tab, make sure to uncheck "show
related", otherwise you will hear "one message conversation collapsed" for
every message you get, conversation or not.

As for shortcuts:
•cmd-shift-d: send a message you are composing (think "deliver")
•cmd-r: reply to sender only when viewing, or pointing to, a message
•cmd-shift-r: reply to all
•cmd-shift-f: forward message
•delete: trash the current message
•cmd-shift-a: attach files to message being written
•cmd-y: preview attachments to a message being viewed
For more shortcuts, look through the menus.

If you want to get to your Dropbox folder, navigate to your user account in
Finder; there is a Dropbox folder right under there. The menu icon is for
showing upload and download status, preferences, and so on.

Hi there!
I know that to get messages I've sent I had to set up a contact for myself then
set mail to always BCC that contact and I get a copy of every message I send!
It is advised to BCC so you might not have a conflict with Mail list's settings!

Add accounts in preferences (cmd-comma), under the accounts tab. Once added,
I am not sure what happens as I only use my one gMail account, but I think
you will have multiple account names under your inbox, sent, and other
folders. You can drag any folder you wish to the favorites bar, to get
access to them with cmd-1 through cmd-0. For instance, my inbox is cmd-1, my
apple folder is cmd-2, my drafts is cmd-3. Again, I do not use multiple
accounts so cannot say for certain what will happen, but give it a shot and
then explore the mailboxes table to see how things are set up. You may also
want to investigate smart mailboxes on google, as they may help you here.

The classic layout is, in my opinion, confusing and not worth it. The
standard one is much better and easier to navigate. On a related note, while
you are setting that in mail preferences' "viewing" tab, make sure to
uncheck "show related", otherwise you will hear "one message conversation
collapsed" for every message you get, conversation or not.

As for shortcuts:
.cmd-shift-d: send a message you are composing (think "deliver")
.cmd-r: reply to sender only when viewing, or pointing to, a message
.cmd-shift-r: reply to all
.cmd-shift-f: forward message
.delete: trash the current message
.cmd-shift-a: attach files to message being written
.cmd-y: preview attachments to a message being viewed For more shortcuts,
look through the menus.

Re: frustrated with mail

2013-02-28 Thread Alex Hall
Oh right, I forgot those instructions! The below assumes that you do not have a
physical mouse, but only a keyboard. Also, do not forget that your system may
require you to press function to get the f keys to work as f keys and not as
system command keys, so add function to any commands you need to.

1. Interact with the mailboxes table and find the mailbox you want to drag.
2. Route your mouse there with vo-cmd-f5, then disable cursor tracking with
vo-shift-f3.
3. Lock your mouse button down with vo-cmd-shift-space, then stop interacting
with the table, and find the favorites bar. Interact with it and place your vo
focus on the folder after which you want your folder to be dragged. If you get
it wrong, or if I am mistaken and it should be before the folder, just repeat
these instructions to move the folder where you want it.
4. Route the mouse again, with vo-cmd-f5, then release the mouse button with
vo-cmd-shift-space. You should be done (don't forget to re-enable cursor
tracking with vo-shift-f3).

My first wonder is if you need to find the box that says "Include this account

help wanted with manually typing key bindings

2013-02-28 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Okay. Here's the issue. I need to set up key bindings for Webvisum. One
would think that merely pressing the keys one wants should do it, but, no go.
I can focus on the area where a key binding is to be entered with no problem
at all. The issue comes with actually designating the keys. Perhaps it will
help if I give a specific example. Suppose I wish to use command+option+1 as
the help for Webvisum hot key. Well, just pressing the actual key combination
of command+option+1 will not work. The keys must be physically typed in. So,
can anyone who knows better how to do this give me the proper key abreviations
for command and option keys and so forth. I know, for example, that the
control key is labeled as ctrl and the shift key seems to be written out as s h
i t without the spaces of course. What I need to know is this. IF I wish to
designate the key combination command+option+1, would I write it out as
command+option+1
with the plus sign between, or would I write it like this
command option 1
with spaces between. It seems, based on my experimentation, that neither way
works if command and option are spelled out-whether capitolized or not.

thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: is this possible?

2013-02-28 Thread May and Noah
Yes, sometimes being blind is a headache.

It did finally decide to come on, but it looks like some windows things are
missing. Important ones that um let me go to restore change passwords, updates
and all that.

I haven't touched that computer in a week and have no clue how or what broke.
At least now there is speech, but I have no clue how to fix it.

Thanks for the ideas though.

Re: Is there a music program that allows working with midi files.

2013-02-28 Thread Chris Blouch
You can load a midi file into garage band by copying it in the finder
and then pasting it into a project in garage band. Like a lot of midi
apps the instrument assignments usually don't come through correctly so
you'll probably have to reassign instruments to the tracks to make sure
everything isn't being played by a piano.

I have never tried to load an existing midi (.mid) file into GB, but
have always created my software tracks (midi) in GB. I don't even know
if that can be done. it might require pasting the midi data from the
clipboard, but I'm not sure on that.

Hi.

Is there any accessible music program that allows playing and editing
a little in midifiles. I would like to transpose change tempo, and
delete an instrument or change an instrument to another instrument.

Best regards Annie.
