Re: Trackpad Question

2013-01-17 Thread Harry Hogue
Brian,

What I find helpful is to change the default "Speak mouse on object after
delay:" (it is worded something like that) to zero, so that there is no delay
between you touching the track pad and hearing Voiceover speak what you are
focused on. I find this most helpful when on the Internet and I wish to route
the mouse to the VO curser where I can then physically click in order to
activate an element that I cannot get at with VoiceOver, such as reading
"More:" on a review (this is most common).

As for opening a mail message, if you are using the track pad commander with
VoiceOver instead of the regular track pad as a sighted person would use it, I
am not exactly sure. If you double-tap it will activate the default action,
but that may or may not necessarily give you the desired result.

In all honesty, I find the track pad (not the track pad commander) most useful
for getting the idea of the visual layout of a particular program (although I
often neglect to use this because I frequently forget it's available to me). I
also find it helpful, as I said, for accessing things that I cannot otherwise
access using VoiceOver, such as activating links that, for whatever reason,
require a physical mouse click instead of a simulated one.

Thanks, and I hope this helps,

Harry

I'm so glad you asked this question, I too have been playing with my Track Pad
and find that I can interact, read but not open things using double tap like
the I phone. I want to see if I can use the Track pad exclusively rather than
my keyboard. Is that possible?

Hi,

You may wish to have your IT guy look at a free app called Apple Configurator.
We have been considering using this at our schools but I haven't had enough
time to totally dive into it. It does, however, look quite promising and
useful for multiple iOS device deployments.

Re: Trackpad Question

2013-01-17 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

you can interact with the table, go to the message, turn trackpad commander
off, and then double tap with the trackpad. This will open the message.
Although, I'm of a mind, if your checking mail, you will more than likely be
responding and composing as well. this obviously, would require a keyboard.
In that case, it might be easier to just press enter.

Re: Trackpad Question

2013-01-17 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys thanks for the responses. It sounds like using the keyboard
with mail is just the best way to go, as if you need to toggle the
trackpad voiceover on and off you are just defeating the purpose of
speeding things up. I like the trackpad and will just use it for
browsing the web and other things it seems to be good for. Luckily I
do love my bluetooth keyboard, was just looking to see if I could
learn another way to do things.

Re: Trackpad Question

2013-01-17 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi there!
OK when your interacting with the message table and you get to the message you
wish to read!
Do a 2 finger flick left to stop interacting and then do a 1 flick right past
the vertical splitter into the message area and do a 2 finger flick right to
interact with the message text!
no need to turn off commander or use a custom command!
and just stop interacting and 1 finger flick back to the message table and
look for another message you want!
hth Colin
PS while looking through the commander menus I saw that there are some presets!
Like control+rotate clockwise is increases the rate and anti clockwise
decreases the rate!
If you use the option key with both clockwise moves that changes the pitch!
And with the command key that does the volume!

Re: accessible diet nutrition app?

2013-01-17 Thread cait furness
Hi Eric,
What are you looking to do, exactly? If you want to track your foods, there is
lose it and spark people. They are both accessible. Sparkpeople also has a
very good website and they have tons of very good articles on there about
nutrition, and they also have a whole section devoted to type 2 diabetics,
which might interest you since you mentioned insulin resistance. They are
free, btw.

Accessible word processor

2013-01-17 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Hey all,

This is pretty simple. I just need a word processor to handle working
with .rtf files. I guess the ability to open other formats would be
good as well, but my main use will be editing .rtf files. The person
who came to assess me for my computer mentioned that Pages was
accessible but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions that
might be better and available in the app store. If Pages is just fine
too, I'd like to hear that as well.

Thanks again for all your help as I get adjusted to the wonderful
world of Mac! :)

Hi there
If your main thing is RTF files, it is very likely that TextEdit will work for
you. What you might want to do, is start out with text edit, and then if you
need Pages, you can get it. To get it you just go to the app store. I paid a
big $21.64 for mine,.

Re: Ipod Touch 4G Question

2013-01-17 Thread Chris Blouch
From what I could find there are two ways to get audio in - Via the
dock connector and via the headphone/mic jack. Apparently the
headphone/mic jack is mono so I suspect you'll want to go with some kind
of dock dongle thing. Of course you'll also need some recording software
for the phone. You would think there would be some kind of dock to line
in cable but the best I could turn up was this $80 dock adapter:

http://www.zzounds.com/item--LINMOBILEIN

I found a lot of headphone mono adaptors but it seems like if you want
stereo and without built-in mics you are suddenly doing 'pro audio'. I
did find a discontinued thing called a tapedock:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/886580-REG/Ion_tape_dock_Portable_Cassette_Player.html

which included both the tape player and interface for about $70. Guess
it wasn't that popular.

Found a tidbit here:

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/gadgets-gadgets-gadgets/767098-iphone-5-stereo-audio-recording-line.html

Apparently the dock connector (4 and 4s) only has mono analog input so
any doc connector that does stereo will have to do its own digitizing
and send the signal in as a digital audio stream. That explains the
somewhat high price of the Line 6 device I cited above. The 5 has only
digital input so even mono analog through the dock isn't possible.

Do you have access to a mac? GaragBand and a mini-headphone to RCA cable
would do the trick there.

You could use Pages or Bean or if you want something simpler try text edit.
Hope that helps

accesseries, was re: need for a trackpad?

2013-01-17 Thread Devin Prater
Hi all. I have a Mac mini, as you all are aware. I have a bluetooth Apple
wireless keyboard, which I will either try to look into getting a less
expensive, but more durable, keyboard, as this one has a stuck power button, it
is stuck down, not sure how to get the spring to pop it back into place, or
even if there is a way. But things like that is why I want a better keyboard,
but I digress, and maybe will start another topic about that. Or I might change
the subject to include all excesseries. Yes, I'll do that before I send the
message; the original being only about trackpads. Anyways, is there a need for
a trackpad? Is there any convenience to having one?

Hi,

no. you don't need a trackpad. Is there use for one? sure. I mean, its just
another method of interfacing with your Mac. You might decide you like using it
for some tasks more than your keyboard. Especially if you happened to own an
IOS device before owning a Mac. The navigation gestures might be more familiar
to you.

2013-01-17 Thread Devin Prater
Ah, OK, good. And do you know of a good, durable bluetooth or USB keyboard that
I could buy, for hopefully less than $80, for my Mac? I'd prefer it to be
bluetooth, so that I can also use it with my iPod.

Receipts: Requesting, turning on and off, responding to those sent to you

2013-01-17 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I've been working on this receipts issue and I'll try to lay out what I've
done. I am now able to request receipts, reply to a request for a receipt (only
tested on sending to myself), check to see if requesting receipts is turned on
and off, and turn requesting receipts on and off.

Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if you accidentally delete already existing
email headers or have other problems with email, terminal or anything else on
your computer or in your life :-) while doing this, though of course I'll be
willing to help troubleshoot if you post problems to the list. This is my first
draft and though I've looked through it for errors, there's certainly the
possibility - the overwhelming probability! - I've made some. So if in doubt,
check things over, ask questions, and do your own research. The links where I
got most of this information are at the bottom of this email, just above my
signature. There are plenty of people on this list who will spot errors and
probably find easier ways to do this. I didn't attempt to include in-depth
instruction about terminal or applescripts. None of what is written here is
original with me.

Mac OS version: These instructions are specifically for Mountain Lion. They may
be used in earlier releases of Mac OS but there will be differences. For
instance, there have been changes in the location of applescript folders in
Mountain Lion.

Before we start, a note about copying and pasting: Be careful to get all the
content as there are apostrophes, braces, semicolons, etc. that really are a
part of the line to be copied and pasted. If you copy a line by doing
shift-down-arrow, this could result in the line being put in terminal and enter
being executed before you have a chance to check the line, so if you want to be
able to check what you've done, highlight from left to right, making sure you
include everything. I know that working with terminal can be a challenge with
voiceover; I have the benefit of a braillelite with brltty in Terminal so if
you have problems, do some research and/or ask for help on the list. Also, I
will be referring to the return/enter key as enter. Those with older Macs may
have both, but it's my understanding that all the newer keyboards now just have
return. But I don't want to have to write return/enter all the time and the
term "enter" seems to get used more though they are not identical and the key
on most Macs is now really return, so if you have both and one doesn't work,
try the other.

Step 1. Checking for headers:

Since sending receipt requests involves adding something to your email headers,
first you want to check to see whether you presently have any custom headers
and what they are. This is done with one line that you can paste into terminal
and then press enter. The line is:

defaults read com.apple.mail UserHeaders

Step 2. Enabling request receipts for the first time

Note: it is possible to just wait and do this with the applescripts in Step 3
but it may be better to do it this way the first time to ensure that there are
no problems.

A. If in Step 1 you get something like:
The domain/default pair of (com.apple.mail, UserHeaders) does not exist":
that means you don't have any custom headers. If that is the case, things are
simpler because you have nothing you have to keep from deleting. In that case,
type or paste the following line in terminal, replacing Name with your name and
email.address with your email address:

defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Disposition-Notification-To" =
"Name "; }'

You shouldn't see any results from this line's entry. You can check to make
sure the Disposition-Notification-To header was added by running the line in
step 1 again. If these are the only lines you have just done in terminal, you
can easily get back up to the first entry from step 1 by arrowing up twice in
terminal. You won't hurt anything if you accidentally do the line from this
step over but you won't see any results.
You won't have to type or paste to turn this on and off each time as we will be
using apple scripts or other alternatives for that. Skip to step 3 if you
completed 2A successfully.

2B. If the line you entered in Terminal in step 1 gives you something that has
a line with a left brace and the beginning and a right brace at the end, it
means that you do have some custom headers which you may not want to delete in
the process of adding what you need to generate receipt requests. Here's an
example of what you might get (this is only an example; what you get will vary
according to your custom headers):

{Bcc = "b...@example.com"; }

In this case you have two choices to proceed. One, which I haven't tried, would
be to edit the .plist and add in the header. You can find more about this by
following the link where I got most of this information, which will be at the
bottom of this email. However, this may have changed somewhat because I notice
that the path to the .pl

seeing which processes or apps are hogging rousources?

2013-01-17 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Every time I start my mac (2011 Mini with 2gb ram and 10.8), it is sluggish for
at least ten to fifteen minutes. Eventually things calm down, provided I stay
within three or four apps, but for those first minutes everything is slow and
busy more often than not. Is there a way I can use Activity Monitor to see
which apps and/or processes are taking up the mac's resources, such as CPU time
or ram? Thanks.

Have a great day,

Hmm. I'm not sure I have the receit. And I'm not sure I really want another
one, since this one messed up so easily. Do they usually break so easily? I
mean I can still use the keyboard, but the power button seems to press in,
turning the keyboard on and off, randomly.

I had a similar problem with my macbook when I installed mountain lion. I
upgraded to 4 gigabytes of ram and that took care of the problem. I rarely ever
get the "busy" notice, and when I do, it lasts for a brief time and then
everything works fine.

I know I have low ram, but the question stands: can you sort process lists by
CPU usage or ram? I tried the vo-shift-backslash command and was taken to the
headers list, but activating the buttons there did not seem to do anything at
all. Is there any way to do this?

Re: urgent urgent urgent urgent help resetting voice over to factory defaults in osx lion

2013-01-17 Thread Alex Hall
You may not have to. Assuming vo is otherwise running normally, use the
vo-cmd-arrow commands; by default up/down will change voice, so hit vo-cmd-down
several times to set vo to a working voice. Once you do that, you should have
no trouble getting rid of Infovox and re-selecting your preferred voice.

Re: urgent urgent urgent urgent help resetting voice over to factory defaults in osx lion

2013-01-17 Thread hank smith
Hello again I tried vo comand up and down aros all that did was lower
and rais voice over fvoume.
when I did that I got a little what sounds like a parshale uderance and
that is all.

its as if infovox hosed voice over.
isn't there a way to reset the thing to default or am I going to have to
reload.
all I did was install infovox and set the voice to default now I can't
do a darn thing with vo.
I tried vo comand left and write and up and down to and nothing switches
it back threw the voices.

did infovox mess up my osx lion?

Actually, you assume incorrectly. It says plainly on the website that 3.1,

So what exactly is it doing? Is it not talking or repeating the nag message

2013-01-17 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, this will work. But if it's silent, it's also possible that the voice has
just gone down in volume; I've had that happen though not when installing
Infovox. As for getting rid of infovox, that may not be necessary either when
you figure out what happened.

2013-01-17 Thread hank smith

I am using bootcamp windows 7 to send the email.
I am running latest version off the website a imac intel
it doesn't talk it says like a sillable.
it then sounds like a click or bomg or something I really can't discribe
it but it doesn't talk and does like a click click click or something
like that
it could possibly be blinking? I have a little bit of light preception
in my write eye and it looks like it is blinking as well.

not sure if this is making any sense.
I tried the hiphop voice if this is any help.
as far as it being activated before I switched the voice I went to the
manager and hit the space bar to view the sample and it said this is a
evaluation voice and then the name of the voice I installed.
I figured sense it said this it was a evaluation voice it was in in demo
mode.

If you can find the volume item in the vo-cmd-left/right rotation, move two
items right and you will be on the voice item. Vo-down until you get to a voice
that actually works. Also remember to give it a minute to load new voices; it
won't be instant since no voices are held in memory that are not used.

Turn vo off, then back on. The setting should be on voice by default once vo is

Re: urgent urgent urgent urgent help resetting voice over to factory defaults in osx lion

2013-01-17 Thread hank smith

when I try to do what u suggested it still stays on volume.
it doesn't want to advance to the next item in that rotation thingy
meaning it doesn't switch to the voice oppsion it just sticks on volume.

I have never ever seen this behavior before in my life.
I can't get thing to switch to a different voice no matter what I do.

On 1/17/2013 11:37 PM, Cheryl Homiak wrote:

Hold down command-vo-keys and arrow two to the right. Then try the arrowing up.
If you are on volume you are two to the left of voices.

Hi,

I honestly haven't heard of the keyboard being plagued with issues. Mine has
been working for over 2 years now. But, if you do want to go another route,
you might want to check out one of logitechs line of BT keyboards. They are in
the same price range as the Apple bluetooth keyboard. I know they have a
couple solar powered models as well.
