Re: Replying to Posts on this Forum

2012-09-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Thanks, Risette! Just replying from within Mail as you suggest is working fine
for this thread as I requested email notifications of posts. But normally I
just get the digest emails to save my inbox from being flooded.

Would be great if there was a way to reply to digest emails from within mail.
I'll try putting the thread subject in the subject field of the email. I have a
feeling that might work.

Best,
Nic

Re: office software

2012-09-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chris,

In Pages, you adjust line spacing by going to the Text inspector and selecting
the Text tab. You show and hide the inspectors by pressing Cmd-Option-i.

You change the font by selecting the text to be changed and pressing Cmd-t to
show the fonts palette. Press VO-Cmd-t to go to the Collections list, then once
again to go to the Family list, and yet again to go to the typeface list, then
navigate right to the size. Press Cmd-t again to hide the fonts palette.

The important thing to remember with Pages is that you use the inspectors to
organise the layout.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Chris,

Click-toFlash will block most flash content except the players it recognizes.
If it doesn't support content, a placeholder will appear with the word "flash".
You can do a Vo-mouse-click, shift-VO-space on it, or you can press

"video element controller" will appear. These buttons are accessible. This
extension is especially useful on blogs with embedded players.

I'd suggest updating to Click-to-plugin, as it supports more players than
click-to-flash.

Re: Replying to Posts on this Forum

2012-09-16 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Nick,

I'd suggest cutting and pasting the subject from within the digest. When you
hit command-r to reply, delete the text in the subject line, which will be
something like "mac visionaries digest, x messages, x topics" and replace it
with the subject line reflecting the topic you want to discuss. This way, your
question will more likely be answered, as the other list members will be aware
of the subject.

Also, if the text is quoted beneath the reply, I would suggest selecting to the
end of the document with command-shift-down-arrow, as that could create some
unnecessary clutter if it includes the entire digest email.

Teresa

Hi Eric,

I see the same behaviour here with capslock j.

Well I guess I should say used to see, as for some inexplicable
reason everything appears to have stopped working.

Neither my capslock for VO or the capslock inside the vm is working any
more.

Running the latest version of keyremap version ending in .26.

Anyone else seeing this behaviour??

seeing to whom an email was addressed?

Hi all,
Is there a way to see to whom an email was sent when you get it? For instance,
if I get a message that someone replied to privately, but the thread started on
a mailing list, I would not know it was private unless I saw the "to" field. I
have looked in the message content area once I press enter on a mesage, but see
nothing at all except the text, let alone the header I want. Any suggestsions
would be great. Thanks.

By the way, an easy way to locate tracks you've just added to iTunes
is to navigate to the "Recently Added" smart playlist in the sources

This is simply a smart playlist that keeps track of items you've added
to iTunes, that are not podcasts, in the last two weeks, by default in

interval, or to make your own smart playlist criteria.

thank you for your help.
It's much appreciated.
I've noticed that when i change font or sizes of text, voiceover will lose
focus and i'll have to restart the program. I will interact with the page that
i was on.
DO you have a suggestion for that?
Thanks.

Radio Streams in iTunes on the Mac.

2012-09-16 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi All.

I am going to be without a phone for the next two weeks so connected my Mac to
my bluetooth speakers and thought I'd go in to Itunes and try and open a few
radio streams. I find that all the streams and content is collapsed and it
doesn't matter what I do, none of the content or streams will expand. In Snow
Leopard and Lion the radio streams did work. Does any one know how to get
these streams to work in Mountain Lion?

Thanks in advance.

Kawal.

Re: Caps Lock to VO, KeyRemap4Macbook update

2012-09-16 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Bart,

Thanks for the info about the j key in the VM. For me all is working just like
on a PC except that one key. A very nice improvement. Before this I had to
use the ` key and many more of the laptop functions did not work.

As far as on the Mac side my two computers have been rock solid using the VO
key as the Caps lock.

Is it possible you need to double check the caps lock setting in the PCKeyboard
hack app? I would just double check that all the check boxes are still
checked.

I'm running version 7.8.17.

Hard to say if this is a KeyRemap4Macbook issue, a Voice over issue or
something else. I love my Macs but unexpected things still happen. I read on
this list all kinds of unexpected behavior with my friend Voice Over.

I guess if I were in your position I would consider first checking the settings
then if that didn't work I would uninstall both apps and start over as it
doesn't take long.

Then If that didn't work I would consider setting VO back to default settings
and then trying that. You could then put the settings back just remember to
export and save your settings first.

I hope to hear you are up and running soon.

At this point I am typing much faster and still finding more uses for the caps
lock VO key.

Best.

Can't Connect to the App Store

2012-09-16 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all, strangest problem on my first generation Ipad. It can't
connect to the App Store. I called Apple, but of course the warranty
expired. I can download new apps, or go to an App that is already on
my Ipad and update it, but when I go to the Update tab in the App
store I get an error message that says Cannot connect to the App
store, so I cannot update all my Apps at once, or even see the list of
Apps that have updates. There is nothing further to the error message,
it just says cannot connect to the App Store. I did a soft reset with
the power button and button, and that didn't fix it. Has anyone else
had this occur, and if so how did you fix it? Thanks

Re: Can't Connect to the App Store

2012-09-16 Thread Peggy Fleischer
Hi:

My husband had this same experience just yesterday. We found a solution that
works but your going to think it sounds odd.

1. Go into settings on your iPad and change the year in your date and time
settings to reflect today's date year 2014.
2. Go to the app store and do your updates. You may get a security message.
Some people have reported getting a security warning. My husband did not get
the warning.
3. Go back to settings and and change the date and time back to the proper date
for today 2012. Be sure to check Automatic for the time zone so that your clock
does not get messed up when you reset to today's date. Your updates will work
fine in the future. THis is a known security bug with the app store.

I hope this helps. Feel free to write me off list if you have any further
questions.

Re: iTunes libraries

2012-09-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I'm not entirely sure, but you could try the following:

1. Delete your entire current library of music and movies, but do not send the
files to the trash.

2. In preferences, in the advanced pane, select the new location you'd like to
use for your iTunes Media library (e.g. an external disc).

3. Either
(a) Copy the Music and Movies folders from your iTunes Media Library folder to
the Automatically Add to iTunes folder in the new iTunes Media folder on your
external HD;
or
(b) Ensure the "copy music files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
option in the advanced pane of iTunes preferences is checked, and then go to
file > add to library, and add your old Music and Movies folders to your iTunes
library.

4. Once you've re-added all your music and movies to iTunes by one of the
methods in point 3 you could delete the Music and Movies folders from your old
iTunes Media folder and then empty trash to free up space.

You should probably create a back up duplicate of your Mac before trying this
in case it works out badly.

All the best and hope some of this helped.

2012-09-16 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Peggy,

Thank you so very much for this suggestion. It is working, and yes,
that is a strange thing to do, but hey, it works. I set my year to
2014, went to the app sotore, did get an error message that said the
app store couldn't create a secure connection and to check my time and
date. Went back and switched the date back to automatic and today,
went back to the app store, and now updates is working fine and
updating 81 apps. I don't use my Ipad that much as it is old, and use
my Iphone 4s most of the time, but do like to keep things current.
Thanks again for this tip. Best, Brian

Re: Caps Lock to VO, KeyRemap4Macbook update

2012-09-16 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Bart,

Thanks for the info about the j key in the VM. For me all is working just like
on a PC except that one key. A very nice improvement. Before this I had to
use the Accent key and many more of the laptop functions did not work.

As far as on the Mac side my two computers have been rock solid using the VO
key as the Caps lock.

Is it possible you need to double check the caps lock setting in the PCKeyboard
hack app? I would just double check that all the check boxes are still checked
in both apps.

I would love to know if others are having success or if anyone has had the
mapping stop as you did.

At this point I am typing much faster and still finding more uses for the caps
lock VO key.

Best.

  Hi Chris,

Click-toFlash will block most flash content except the players it
recognizes. If it doesn't support content, a placeholder will appear with the
word "flash". You can do a Vo-mouse-click, shift-VO-space on it, or you can
press control-command-w to allow the content. The extension has a lot of
preferences, which you can access from the Safari extensions area of Safari
preferences, or by pressing option-comma from any webpage.

There are a lot of players that are supported. You can use BBC, Youtube,
Audible, and many others. With the supported players, a group of items called
"video element controller" will appear. These buttons are accessible. This
extension is especially useful on blogs with embedded players.

I'd suggest updating to Click-to-plugin, as it supports more players than
click-to-flash.

Deleting mail from server

2012-09-16 Thread agent086b

Hi all,
recently I asked how to delete mail from the server. I did get the
answer how to do this but I have accidentally deleted the message.
So if somebody would be kind enough to repeat this I would really
appreciate it.

I can't see a link to the archives, so can't try & find it there.
Thanks.

Re: iTunes libraries

2012-09-16 Thread Esther
Hi Bill, Nick, and Others,

To move your iTunes library contents to another hard drive, the best
way of handling this is by using the "Organize library…" option under
the "Library" submenu in the "File" menu on the iTunes menu bar. This
step is taken after you designate the new location for your iTunes
library using the Advanced pane of iTunes preferences, as Nic
outlined.

The most complete discussion of this process, including all the most
common wrong ways that people use to do this, is given in the iLounge
tutorial guide on "Transferring your iTunes Library" from November
2011. It also explains the differences between dealing with the
database files and the data content in iTunes:

In case that long link breaks, here's a shortened link to the same
page:

This question was recently asked on the mac-access list, and I've
excerpted this information from my reply in the Mail Archive post for
that list, linked below:
• Re: iTunes Media Folder (September 12, 2012)
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg12950.html
That post links to an earlier post to the mac-access list that goes
into considerably more detail explaining the sections of the article
that apply specifically to moving an existing library to an external
hard drive:
• Moving iTunes library to an external drive [was Re: Itunes question]
(February 6, 2012)
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg07714.html

HTH. I tried looking for a similar post in the macvisionaries
archives, but I couldn't find any explanations that were as complete
or up to date. However, in general you can find tutorials on various
subjects relating to iTunes at the iLounge site:
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/tutorials/

When you read the individual links, remember to use Safari reader
(Command-Shift-R) after activating the link for each article.

Cheers,

Esther

using Automator?

2012-09-16 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Has anyone tried Automator in ML? I was looking up how to set a global hotkey
for a script, and was directed to this app with instructions to drag a
particular item to a workflow area. Not only do I not see a workflow area into
which I can drag the item, I see nothing that could even be an edit area or a
place that accepts items at all. I'm rather confused, and wonder if I have an
out-of-date article or if Automator is not accessible in ML? Thanks.

Re: using click to flash

2012-09-16 Thread Steve Holmes
I could imagine many reasons to block flash from pages. Just like java and
javascript. These things execute code from other people's websites on your
computer. I would only want to allow such scripting engines to run code from
known and trusted websites. There is a Firefox plug-in called noscript that
allows you to allow javascript to run from only those sites you permit. Things
are much more secure that way. I believe most of the computer hackery of late
comes from mal where using the java runtime on your computer and also flash.
Look at how many security updates had to be made to flash over the years.
Frankly, between the security holes and accessibility problems with flash, that
parasite should be removed from all our computers! They already gave up on
mobile devices so let's get it out of our computers too; I'm all for that.

Re: using Automator?

2012-09-16 Thread Esther
Hi Alex,

I haven't tried Auotomator in ML, but the way this has worked in past
versions, you can always add a an action to a workflow by pressing
"return" when you're focused on your selection, such as "Run Shell
Script" or "Run AppleScript". That works for sighted users, too, to
add an action to the workflow area. The only difference between
pressing "return" and using drag and drop is that your selection
always gets added to the end of the workflow when you press "return".
A sighted user who has a number of actions already in the workflow
area can choose to drag and drop a new action into some other position
-- such as just before the last added action. However, you can
reorder any actions that have been added to the workflow area by
interacting with the workflow, then focusing on a particular action
and using Command-Up arrow (or down arrow) to move it into another
position in the workflow.

The reason you aren't finding the workflow area is that it's empty
until you add actions to it. It's initially an empty area that's
probably announced as "Untitled". And the articles about Automator
have always described the process of adding actions in terms of
instructions to drag and drop an action into the workflow area. It
used to require double clicking on actions to add them (back in the
days of Tiger -- OS X 10.4), but you can just press return.

HTH. Cheers,

Esthesr

Re: using click to flash

2012-09-16 Thread Esther
Hi Chris, Timothy, Steve, Teresa, and Others,

Steve is correct that there are reasons for wanting to block flash --
if only because you want to control how your resources are used, and
that your memory is not taken up playing flash-based advertisements
when you load web pages. In other instances, when video content is
available both as flash and HTML5, blocking flash and forcing the
loading of HTML5 versions can give you accessible player controls.
This was the way we used to get sound samples to play on the
Audible.com before they transitioned to HTML5. The original idea
behind the click-to-flash plug-in was that it simply blocked the
automatic loading of flash content and gave you control of what was
loaded. (Teresa explained some of this in her post). There was a
later click-to Safari extension that expanded the functionality, and
then there was further development of the click-to plug-in. You
probably only want to load one of these. So the answer is that this
should give you improved accessibility (access to player controls in
some situations where you wouldn't otherwise have this), and also more
control over your Safari resources use, as well as preventing unwanted
flash loading.

The current information for both the ClickToPlugin and the
ClickToFlash Safari extensions may be found here:

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: using Automator?

2012-09-16 Thread Alex Hall
Okay, that did work, thanks. There was no default button, so I didn't think to
try it. Wow, htere sure is a lot of interacting to be done in that window...
