Re: Organizing files and folders

2012-08-09 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

One way of getting yourself some of the way to where you want is to go into the
view options. Press command + J to bring these up. Now Put arrange by to Kind
and sort by to Name or whatever you like. The defaults are to arrange by None
and sort by date modified. But if you put Arrange by Kind then the folders will
be grouped together.

If we use the view options, will that apply to all folders, and stay applied?
In other words, I close that finder window, then re-open it, will my view

Dragging and dropping frustration

2012-08-09 Thread Mary Scott
Okay, I attempted several times to drag my Mac List mailbox over to my
Favorites bar so that it will pop up when pressing command 2. I went to the
list and marked it successfully for dragging. I went to Drafts which is in the
second position and marked it for dropping. It made the satisfying dragging
noises and then said it failed to drop of Drafts. What else can I do? Mel

Do it on your drives, then it should apply to all folders inside those drives.
Unfortunately, I can't find a way to change these globally, but you should see
a checkbox to apply to all subfolders or something along those lines. Thanks
for the tip about using kind, I never knew what that did. I will enjoy having
my folders together and separate from my files.

Ok, go into iTunes, and go to the iTunes store, enter how to be blind into the
search box, you will then see a podcast listed with that title. You will be
able to play the podcasts from there and also subscribe to Mike's feeds.

using jack and amadeus pro to record system audio.

2012-08-09 Thread Nektarios Mallas
Hi list.
I am trying to accomplish the above task with jack and amadeus pro.
Basically, I wish to record a stream playing in google chrome but although jack
is accessible, I can't figure out the send and receive ports in the routing
section.
I am talking about the open source "jack" not audio hijack pro.

Thanks for any help.

Attachments issue again

2012-08-09 Thread Christine Grassman
Well, I'm able to open them. I'm able to download them. But apparently, when I
open Preview or Text Edit, all of what is supposed to be there is not there,
according to someone else who received the same attachments at issue. There
were several pages not read, and not downloaded. What gives?
Also, if there are two or more attachments, I cannot figure out how to select
and save all, and there does not appear to be a "save all" that is presenting
itself to me. (frustrated growl)

Re: dication

2012-08-09 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
Hello, Christy. I don't know what Christie Powell I will look like when I
dictated, but this is how it looks.

That's what Dictation transcribed when I said "Krysti Power." Now, of course,
the spelling isn't right--there are like 18 ways to spell Krysti. :)
Sometimes, you have to spell things, like KR YST I space POW eat on.
Well, that's another example of Dictation not working quite right, but it
usually is better than that. But, then people say I have an accent, so maybe
it's me. :) Practice with it. Enjoy it.

Using Time Machine Inside Mail and Other Apps?

2012-08-09 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

Has anyone had success using Time Machine inside Mail and other apps? In Mail,
I can't seem to manipulate the time and date selector, for example.

Is there a way to go into Time Machine's folders and examine the data there?
I'd prefer to use the interface, if it's accessible.

Thanks,
Teresa

Issue with Escape Key in Mountain Lion

2012-08-09 Thread Mike Busboom
Greetings to all of you,

Since installing Mountain Lion, I have had loads of grief with the Escape Key
in Pop-Up menus. Frequently, when in a pop-up menu, I am unable to get out of
it by issuing the Escape Key. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what
is the solution?

With sincere gratitude,

Re: Issue with Escape Key in Mountain Lion

2012-08-09 Thread Gavin Grundlingh
I only seem to have this issue in the status menus, or the "menu extras" as
VoiceOver now calls them. It doeswn't happen all the time, but when it does,
hitting Escape just dings at me. My only solutions at this point are to either
Command-Tab out of and back into the application you're using, if you have
multiple applications open, or move focus to the dock and press the button for
the application you are busy with. I hope this can be fixed in a future update.

What's your fave faceBook solution?

2012-08-09 Thread Christina C.
Hi all,

I am so frustrated. I am not one of those people who are always on FB but when
I do use it I am always so disappointed. I was hoping voice book for iOS would
be the solution. However, I just discovered that my newsfeed is not accurate.
So, back to the mac and Safari, but the website is so frustrating and slow. It
also won't let me read the whole newsfeed. It just keeps bouncing me back to
the top of my newsfeed after I get a few posts down the page. :( :(

Thanks of any help.

Question About Built-In MBP Keyboard

2012-08-09 Thread Gavin Grundlingh
Hi all,

Is there a way I can use the right-hand side of the built-in MacBook Pro
keyboard as a number pad? I want to be able to use J, K, L, U, I, O, etc. as
number keys, but can't find any kind of num lock. I can sort of get it to work
if I turn on Mouse Keys, but that's not really going to work for me. I really
don't want to have to keep connecting an external PC keyboard to my computer.

Re: 2 things still not fixed in Mountain Lion.

2012-08-09 Thread Chris Blouch

I'm a bit behind on email :)

I poked around and found the same thing. Apparently its a bug in the
Apple Core Audio library. Individual MIDI apps can address this but
nothing I found could fix playback with the Quicktime Player or Preview.
HN2 is some kind of MIDI app that the developer has patched to work
around Apple's bug. Best thing for now is to open it in something else
like Garage Band.

Huhho! Wow! I see what you mean. It's very good as far as the sound,
but, the volume is atrocious! It is quite quiet.

Let me see if I can figure out a way to turn it up.

OK, well, after googling I found the problem. I don't know how to fix
it though, but it's at least a start for us.

Apparently, something in 10.7 and above with the midi Synfire gm midi
synth broke. This means all instrument patches are way quieter than
normal.

The web site I went to suggested that you update to HN2 2.5.0 or
higher to fix the problem, but I have yet been able to find a donwload
link anywhere to do this.

Don't ask me what HN2 2.5.0 is/does? I have no clue aside fixing the
problem. You now basically know what I know.

Also, and I freely admit that compared to your issues this one is
petty, but midi playback is still awful under Mountain
Lion. I can play midis in VLC, or boot into snow leopard from my
external drive to get good playback, but sometimes, I just
want to use quick preview, and it's still as poor of quality as it
was under lion. I know it's not an important feature, but

I'm still slightly bummed out that it was never addressed.

Hi all.
I've found 2 things so far that haven't been fixed in Mountain Lion.
1. Tables in documents. These still appear to not work properly with
VoiceOver. VO still announces new line new line when I

tried this just now.
2. Web page selection. This still doesn't work. I know that the web
page scrolls when I move with the arrow keys, but

VoiceOver is still not reporting that the page is scrolling.
I think I'll be sending these findings to Apple Accessibility to see
what they have to say about these really old issues.

Sorry to spoil the good mood of the new OS launch, Matthew Campbell.

question about recording with mac

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Here's the problem: I want to record my guitar along with a song playing on the
mac.
Here's what I have:
an amp going into the line-in port of the mac,
the latest Soundflower release,
an aggregate audio device set to use built-in input and soundflower,
audacity, recordPad, and vlc for recording,
vlc, quicktime (modern and v7 as recommended by Chris) for output (I also have
iTunes, but hate it).

So, given that, how can I do this? The way I see it, I need to record my
aggregate device in my recorder. The problem is piping the song I'm playing
with into soundflower, and still being able to hear it as it plays so I know
what I'm doing. Of course, I don't want to lose vo speech, so I can't just
redirect system audio to soundflower (besides, I'd lose the song then anyway).
Am I misunderstanding how this works? That is, will I in fact lose audio I pipe
to soundflower, or will it still play through the speakers connected to my
headphone jack? I'm using a Mac Mini, if that matters. Thanks for any thoughts.

Have a great day,

Problems with Extras Menu New Apps

2012-08-09 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Been trying to add some new apps to my mac, and I have noticed that
anything I try and add that puts itself in the Menu Extras doesn't
seem to work with VO. It could be that these apps do not work with
Voiceover, or it could be that the Menus Extras just dones't work very
well with VO. My dropbox works fine, but I tried to install Menu Pages
for Facebook, got it successfully downloaded from the App store as it
is in my app folder, but when I go to launch it, it just appears in
the menu extras, and will tell me that Menu Pages for Facebook has no
windows. I have tried installing other apps that send themselves to
the Menus Extras all free Facebook related apps and anything that goes
in to the menu extras just doesn't seem to work. Has anyone put
anything successfully in to the menu extras outside of dropbox? Thanks

When you say that the menu extras don't work, do you mean that no menu comes up

Re: Problems with Extras Menu New Apps

2012-08-09 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland

Hold on here...

When you are focussed on the extras menu item, what're you then hitting to
open it? You need to focus on the extra menu item of your choice, then hit
vo+space. It works slightly differently than the regular menu bar items,
and I basically just found that out by playing around with it. So, instead
of hitting vo+down arrow to drop the menu down/opened, hit vo+space instead.
Then vo+down arrow like you would normally through a menu, and when on the
option you want hit vo+space to select it, or vo+right arrow/left arrow to
expand/collapse it if it's a sub menu item.

Re: Problems with Extras Menu New Apps

2012-08-09 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
Brian, for one thing, have you thought about using Adium, instead of
Trillian? might I ask why you're using Trillian instead?

Second of all, I, too have the Facebook app you referred to. It seems to
come up fine for me.

Now, what I have hoticed however is some of the apps, such as one I have
called RSS menu for example, even though set to come up when I log on, still
tend to not get mounted up in the extras section until I manually open them
from my dock/apps folder after rebooting. On that note, it's a bit bizarre.
I'm not really totally sure why that's happening, but aside that, I've had
no trouble.

In my extras, i have things like Adium, Skype when it's running, Dropbox,
RSS Menu, Menu Weather, Boxcar, sometimes the native AIM client, which by
the way, yes, is totally! Voiceover friendly before anyone asks, not sure
what else. I think that's about it. All of them however seem to work just
fine over here for what it's worth. Oh, wait a minute. I also have Growl.

When you say that the menu extras don't work, do you mean that no menu

Mail issue

2012-08-09 Thread Mary Scott
Hi all, I just downloaded ML so I am sorry if this has been answered. Mail was
working great at first but now if I click on a link in order to go to a
website, it goes to Finder and says Safari is running in the background which
means I have to move through windows to find the site and then mail acts very
strange and I have trouble getting back to it. Any ideas what is going on?

confused about cursor tracking in textEdit

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I was just sent a guide on Garageband and opened it with textedit. I read line
by line for a bit until I found where I wanted to be, then hit vo-a to read
from that point on. No matter what I do, though, vo-a starts reading the
document from the beginning, not from where I stopped arrowing. I even tried
vo-cmd-f4 to move vo to keyboard focus, and the f5 command to move keyboard to
vo, but neither work. Is this a bug, or am I missing an obvious step? This
seems to work in mail, the only other place I generally use vo-a, but in
textEdit it always moves to the top of the document first. Any thoughts? Thanks.

textEdit problem solved: always interact!

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I feel pretty stupid, but I figured out my textEdit problem, where vo-a always
started from the top of the file. It turns out textEdit opens the file and vo
reads it, but vo does not automatically interact with the edit text area like I
thought it would. I interacted and all is working normally. Sorry about that,
but it is a good lesson for me. *sheepishly presses the send button*

When I get the iMac

2012-08-09 Thread agent086b

Hi all,
just getting ready for when I purchase my iMac in the next week or sow.
What do I need to do on it's arrival? I assume it comes with an
administrator account so I expect I will need to create a non admin one.
Other than getting it online is there anything else I will need to do? I
will be purchasing it directly from Apple as I don't have an Apple store
in my town, so I don't have anyone local to ask these questions.

Thanks as always for any help.
Max.

Re: When I get the iMac

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
There is some setup to go through. Fortunately, you need only hit cmd-f5 once
the mac is booted and vo can walk you through them, provided you know the basic
commands for using vo. When I got my mini, it had Lion, and I found the setup
to not work well with my keyboard. However, I now believe that, had I an apple
keyboard or a macbook, it would have worked well. So, if you did not get the
official apple keyboard, you may run into problems (unless that was fixed in
ML). Have you ever used vo before, or do you want some tips for basic usage so
you can get things going?

2012-08-09 Thread John Sanfilippo
I have found that you actually have to interact with text before you issue your
vo a command. Then vo will read from here down.

Isn't it strange that this is necessary even though you're reading or editing
text, interacting with it all the time?

Re: question about recording with mac

2012-08-09 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

This sounds like a whole lot of work when you can just use Garageband. Paste
the audio track in in your GB project, press command option N and select real
instrument from the dialog and press enter to create a real instrument track.
So, if you press the Letter R for record, the track will start playing, and
your real instrument track will start recording. Start playing your guitar,
and press space when your done.

Re: question about recording with mac

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
I tried exactly that on the advice from another list. The problem is that my
instrument is not being recorded, or at least is not being played back when I
play the song after doing a recording. Also, I pasted in my mp3, and it plays,
but I can't find it in any of the tracks. I see a grand piano, my bass track,
and a track called "audio 2". I got rid of grand piano as I didn't create it
and don't need it, but what is audio 2, where is my mp3, and why is my bass not
recording? I hear myself in my speakers (I have monitoring on) so I know the
setup is physically working, but gb seems to not want to record it. I was sent
a nice gb tutorial which you and others helped to create, but I still can't get
this to work right. I know you're a gb expert, so hopefully you can shed light
on this. Thanks!

Re: When I get the iMac

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
That and the navigation keys. When I say "vo" below, I mean the vo keys, which
are control and option. So, vo-right means to hold down control and option and
press the right arrow.
Move to the next item in a dialog: vo-right
Move o the previous item in a dialog: vo-left
Interact (you may need to do this to enter text): vo-shift-down
Stop interacting (do this once you're done with whatever you interacted with):
vo-shift-up
Start keyboard help (vo says the function of any vo command you type): vo-k
Exit keyboard help: escape

I think you'll find the keyboard help quite useful. Of course, if you get
stuck, just email the list and we'll try to help you out. I'm sure someone can
even do it over skype if necessary. That said, if you can rope a sighted person
into spending a few minutes with you to make sure all goes well, you may have
an easier time of it. I did that and was glad I did, but, again, I had that odd
keyboard experience. Good luck.

sort of figured out GarageBand

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I think I sort of got GB down. I have no idea what changed, but things are
working as Ricardo said they should now and I was able to export a song, with
my bass track, as a standard mp3. Now, if I could just drop the original song a
half step and re-record it so I can play it in G... can I do that, drop the
imported mp3 a half step?

Re: When I get the iMac

2012-08-09 Thread Harry Hogue
Back on Snow Leopard, Voiceover came on when I booted up my computer for the
first time -- there was no need to even start it. Perhaps it is different with
Mountain Lion. it even had a tutorial to walk you through the basics of using
voiceOver, which I found very useful. It was around a month before I felt
truly at ease moving around, and I still find myself learning things. That,
however, was the same with Windows. computers, you know. :D

sorry, one more GB question: amps

2012-08-09 Thread Alex Hall
Hi again all,
ONe last thing. using an electric guitar, how do I change amp settings? I see
where I can select a preset, but beyond that, how can I change anything about
the preset? For instance, the gain, overdrive, and so on?
