Wow!

If its basic, why does it cost $10? Especially since you can use garageband

Hello all.
Any tips on using Vizwiz would be greatly appreciated please. Asking as
I have tried the app for the first time to find out who a letter is
from. The first answer I got was, "hand touching camera". So tried again
and the second anser I got was, "not sure, bit blurred, move camera
back". The third time I got an answer as if they couldn't see anything
at all!
Now, the first time I did the picture I held the phone slightly upwards
from the item. The second time I placed the phone on top of the item.
The third time I had the phone slightly left of the item.

This is on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.
Thanks!

I haven't seen any replies to this yet; doesn't anyone out there use
daisy books on either IOS or mac? Particularly on IOS devices? I don't
think Read to Go is viable enough. Can't use it with VO nor read with
Braille. If not, then is there a way we could get a daisy book to run
in iBook? That is probably a long shot for sure.

Re: wireless printers

2012-03-28 Thread Lewis Alexander
if your printer has a built in wireless interface then brilliant, you're up and
running. use the installer CD that comes with your printer to install all the
software. then from there it will help you connect to the printer wirelessly,
that's of course depending on the software CD. please could you give me a model
number of the printer?

as soon as your drivers are installed, etc. you will need to go to system
preferences, then go to printers and fax. in this window, add the printer. if
you're using just 1 or 2 machines, use the IP version of the printer, if you're
connecting from a long distance, etc then bonjour connection can be used.
either way just make sure it's the printer. ah you said 3 in one. fair enough
lol oops.

when the printer is added you should be fine and dandy.

Lion Questions

2012-03-28 Thread Les Kriegler
This is my first experience with Lion. I'm using Mail and like the way
messages are broken into conversation by default. Sometimes, I wind up at the
bottom of the message list and cannot get back to the top of the list. I
thought the keystroke to accomplish this was VO Shift Home and End, but they
are not working for me. How do I go to the top and bottom of the message list.
Also, I still have to bring focus to the Finder to get VO to talk upon a
restart or clean start after shutdown. On occasion, VO does talk
automatically, but usually, that does not occur. Does the Finder need to be
configured in any way for VO to talk automatically without intervention from
me? I also need to bring focus to the Finder when coming out of hibernation
mode. Is this normal in Lion? Thanks for the assist.

Re: DAISY Player for the Mac/iPhone

Don't be sorry. I will have to give your idea a try. I had read in a
forum some place that the app was really sluggish even with high
quality speech turned off. This was apparently especially the case
with an iPod 4th generation. I am using an iPod and have had numerous
crashes of the app by running out of memory all the time with the
Acapela voices. That was why I asked hoping for another daisy
solution if there were one out ther.

Questions about switching from PC to Mac

2012-03-28 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Hey all,

I'm a transplant from the viphone list here and this is my first post
to MacVisionaries... be gentle.

In the same way I used that list to educate myself before purchasing
an iPhone, I'm hoping to learn some stuff about the Mac here since I'm
thinking of making the jump. Seeing as how I have the iPhone 4, plan
on getting the next iPhone that's released in the fall and own an
Apple TV, I figured it made sense to migrate to the Mac... or at least
entertain the possibility. I live in Ontario and, thanks to the
assistive devices program, 75% of a new computer is covered every five
years for those with accessibility needs.

They recently started covering Apple products and my five years is up
this fall so I was thinking of taking full advantage of this.

With that being said, I have a variety of different questions to ask
on here. I just wanted to know what the best way to go about it was.
They cover a wide range of topics and I don't want to spam the list.
On the other side however, putting them all in one e-mail would
probably deter people from viewing certain questions they could answer
because of other questions.

So erm... I guess I'm asking what standard practice is around here for
such things. I bet you guys get the same questions from new comers all
the time so I don't want to be repetitive either.

Thanks for any advice you can lend and I look forward to learning
about the wonderful world of Mac! :)

-Marc

The best place to start is by listening to the podcasts done by Mike Arrigo on
the BlindCoolTech.com site. When I decided to get a Mac a couple of years ago,
I started there and they really helped me out.

if your printer has a built in wireless interface then brilliant, you're up
and running. use the installer CD that comes with your printer to install
all the software. then from there it will help you connect to the printer
wirelessly, that's of course depending on the software CD. please could you
give me a model number of the printer?

as soon as your drivers are installed, etc. you will need to go to system
preferences, then go to printers and fax. in this window, add the printer.
if you're using just 1 or 2 machines, use the IP version of the printer, if
you're connecting from a long distance, etc then bonjour connection can be
used. either way just make sure it's the printer. ah you said 3 in one. fair
enough lol oops.

when the printer is added you should be fine and dandy.

Re: wireless printer

2012-03-28 Thread Lewis Alexander
usually all epson printers are both windows and mac compatible unless otherwise
stated. I remember with my PX820FW I had an accessibility issue with the
installer opackage but with some tinkering I had it resolved.

if the printer isn't being seen as a wireless device then wifi may be turned
off or the wifi needs to be registered to the router. for this you may need
sighted assistance. I'll check on this further and se what can be done.

One thing I did with my mac mini was to set up at least one app to run

always come up talking after login and the finder focuses me on the
desktop. I have terminal start but be hidden; otherwise, it would
probably take focus.

RE: baffled in lion 3 column mail layout help please!

2012-03-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Ioana,

I suggest the following settings for the current version of Mail:

1.

>From the View Menu, select Organize by Conversation.

2.

>From the View Menu, select Collapse All Conversations.

Now you will be able to quickly read messages in a threaded view.

3.

In the Mail Preferences Dialog box, on the Viewing Tab, in addition to
unchecking Use Classic Layout, set both List Preview and Show Message
Header Detail to "None".

4.

Now, to jump from the Message List (center column) to the Message Content
Table, (right column) use either Control+Tab (left hand only) or
Tab+Command+Option (Command and Option should be on the right hand in most
cases) to make this work.

5.

Once you're in the Message Contents Table, you may use VO+Left and VO+Right
arrow keys to quickly jump from one message in the thread to another. Note
that with this configuration, VoiceOver will begin reading each message
automatically.

Please also note that with this configuration it is not necessary to
actually open a message or even a message thread.

In episode 98 of the Candle Shore Podcast, I demonstrate the basic
functionality of Mail using the configuration described above. Since then,
the commands have been changed as reflected above but the 9 minute episode
is still valid in terms of overall navigation concept.

Good Luck,

Mark

Eric,

Tell ya what I have not seen anything that says it is truly 30% more than
other hardware. However, even if that were true, I'd gladly pay 30% more for
a product that is of a higher quality than most other similar devices on the
market. In fact when you start to consider and compare the cost of a PC to a
Mac the PC is less expensive. THis is partially because vendors such as
Dell, HP, etc. get paid by vendors to install trial software etc. on the
machines sold. There are a lot of things that help to reduce the price of
PCs.
Also, consider the fact that many handset manufacturers are practically
giving phones away to move them. THe carriers subsidize the handsets and
then there are the offers of by one get one free etc. APple does not have
to make such deals and yet people will stil purchase the product. So, what
does that tell you? Apple sets the price and if you want the product you
will pay for it. If not, then you did not want that product. Hey I
traded/sold a G4 Mini for $200 and it was about seven years old. Could you
sell a seven-year old PC for about a third of its original value after seven
years? Probably not.

subsidize anything for anyone and I am including myself. There are companies
like Gizelle that takes older equipment and resells it. A lot of times you
can get a very good deal on a machine. There are also other companies that
do something similar. So, there are sources available, but I just see no
reason for APple regardless of how much money they have to get into the
business of providing machines at a reduced price for someone with a
disability. I think your number exercise is leaving out the larger community
of people with disabilities. YOu start adding in all the different types of
disabilities you will see the cost would go up substantially.

AppleWorks Conversion to something more modern?

2012-03-28 Thread Mike Busboom
Greetings,

I recently received some files on a USB Stick that contained several files with
a CWK extension. When I tried to open one of them, I was told that I was
attempting to open an AppleWorks file.

When I spoke with the person who gave me the USB stick, she said that the files
had been created on an old Apple computer quite some time ago. Does anyone
know how I might be able to assist this person and convert the files to
something that is usable on a modern Mac? Is there a free, or not too
expensive utility out there that would accomplish this task for us?

Kindest regards to all and thanks in advance,

Mike

Hi Mark,

Thanks very much for these instructions. As one who has been using Lion Mail
for a little over a day, it's really helpful to have configured the Mail App
properly. Now my inbox list is read with only the author and subject of the

computers and learning them as well. I know that isn't where you live but it
might be something to look in to. They get a lot of help there and schooling

 Hi Eric,

yep I completely agree with you and understand your plite.

I was forced to close down the project due to two major factors. Lack of
support regarding supply of equipment and a poorly run charities
commission stating different rulings and then telling me that my project
does not warrant Commission status, thus failing to grant registered
 numbers, etc.

This project has helped a very small number of users (8 in all) and it's
left me in a very serious situation which I've now resolved.

The problem also exists wherever you are in the world. Funding for
accessible equipment for the blind is non existant. Why? well from my
years of experience in this matter, various charities set up conflicting
guidelines and rulings which do not help the individual in need of the
support. For over 12 years since I lost my sight completely, I had to
apply for various grants. within 10 years, every grant (500+ in total)
were rejected, all because of different factors by their own rulings,
offerings of £100 to £250 towards a product and then not being able to
apply to X amount of other charities (connected to the associated charity
in question) due to ridiculous clauses.

I use my iphone 3GS and macbook pro. the only reason I have these is
through having to sell everything I owned including my old music gear from
years ago to raise the funds for the kit needed, from there it's been a
thing of taking on a few projects to raise cash for equipment I still have
 to rely on.

internationally, we need to change the system and yes APPLE needs to help
us out on this. They have developed products which openly and directly
support blind and disabled users and yet we have to pay an absolute
premium, as rightly said here, over 85% of blind people in the USA are out
of work and cannot afford the equipment and services needed, the same here
in the UK even though disability living allowance and other components
aren't enough to cover costs of equipment. You're lucky if you get into a
university to receive grants for equipment you need. In my case, through
my education, the equipment I had to use failed me all the time, the wrong
software, wrong hardware and operating systems which by their own
admission were poorly managed and had huge issues. hence me taking on the

via IWorks.

Re: Lion or snow leperd

2012-03-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Nancy,

All things being equal, I suggest that you upgrade to Lion.

I have both Lion and Snow Leopard available on my Mac but, since upgrading, I
have not used Snow Leopard again.

Re: baffled in lion 3 column mail layout help please!

2012-03-28 Thread M. Taylor
You are most welcomed, Les.

I truly think that Apple Mail is the greatest gift on the Mac.

Although I use Outlook 2007 and 2010 on my PC everyday, I use Apple Mail for
the heavy-lifting.

Would that I have to choose, Apple Mail is the only one I would go with in any
and all situations.
