Re: anyone else noticing mail.app wierdness?

2012-03-22 Thread Eric Oyen
I can't get chrome to work under voiceover in snow leopard. every time I try,
it segfaults on me or simply doesn't tell me anything (blank scroll area).
chromevox doesn't like my system either. I would upgrade to lion or mountain
lion, but my gear is just old enough to cause problems with the upgrade.

Re: Drobo dashboard, is it accessible?

2012-03-22 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Scott,

Absolutely, it was not my intention to say that, just bevause it is not
accessible, we should give up on it... Or like wise, as it is expensive.

The DroBo is a good product, when it was unique in the market place, as in the
Beyond RAID technology and the hot swap drive solution it was worth every penny.

Now though most venders have a solution that is comparable, and in every case
I've found, notably cheaper too.

I have bought 4 DroBo's over my time, they are nice units in terms of the
actual box, very Apple-essk in their feel and build. I do have issues with the
drive bay flaps, which cover the bays when not in use, these are poorly made
fin bits of plastic that are easily broken off, and have a single sided flimsy
bit of metal to make them spring mounted.

The NetGear on the other hand is entirely metal, and far better build quality,
and is more feature rich...

With droBo you have to choose either a FS (file server) or an iScsi connection,
or USB. The NetGear ReadyNAS solutions at the higher end of their range, which
are still half the price of the DroBo equivalent, has two RJ45 connections for
both FS and iScsi duel interface, as well as a host of other options.

Anyway, I'm not here to sell you a NetGear solution, but can tell you that it
works, and is notably more cost effective than a DroBo.

Re: Drobo dashboard, is it accessible?

2012-03-22 Thread Scott Howell
Neil,

Ok, sorry if I misunderstood your message. Btw, I understand that Drobo has
gone to some sort of magnetic solution for the door flap. Which Netgear did you
choose? I am not as familiar with their products, but I would be curious how
accessible is the interface and what made you choose the Netgear. THe WD's
interface is really tricky just because of the fact it refreshes at odd times
and things just behave in a really curious way. :)

THanks,

Ok, almost the same except steps 4 and 5.

When you do steps one and two, if you look there will be a area where it
says default. If you leave that and then go to your step three and do
everything there, pick an event, tell it to speak, play a sound and
 whatever
else you want, once you press ok it should ask if you want to have the
 name
say default copy. Say yes there and then go through the rest of the
 events
you want to change and they will all be under the default copy section.

 That should work.

I don't use growl though because it completely annoyed me. I just have adium

Thanks for following up on this. The strange thing is that the earlier versions
of the software were quite accessible. It was when they reached version 2 the
problems started. Looking forward to seeing what you can find out.

that recently and upgraded to the newer model of the same unit.

The new model supports both iScsi and regular FS at the same time, so really
handy if you have one machine on all the time and do a lot of file movements to
your NAS... But, it also supports FS at the same time, so you get the benefit
of your iOS devices and other computers on your network having access to the
unit.

The latest model supports the full Sata2 speeds and is notably faster with my
WD RE4 2TB drives.

It also can backup to either a USB hard drive connected to it, or over the
network / internet to another location. I have an old DroBo in a different
building from here with some old drives running RAID0, i.e. stripe rather than
any form of mirroring, this means that I get a complete copy of my data off of
my NAS, so the likelihood of both failing at the same time is remote to say the
least.

My main NAS runs with X-RAID, NetGear's version of Beyond RAID running on it,
and thus I have expandability to 3TB dries if needs be, as the system is
hot-swapable, and also redundant by one drive. Effectively RAID5.

There are no nasty auto refresh sections of the NetGear ReadyNAS HTML
interface, it works very well, and I found it very easy to setup...

You have the usual sort of options ranging from, I'm a pro, to, just manage it
all for me.

Well made, solid unit with a real feeling of build quality to it.

Not sure when DroBo started putting magnetic flaps on, I've bought DroBo up and
until the end of last year, buying one of their 5 bay FS machines, whilst yes
the front removable cover is magnetic, and always has been with DroBo. The
plastic flaps which seal the hard drive bays when not in use, are plastic and
of poor quality and design, with a single side spring metal clasp to keep them
shut... I've broken quite a few, and reading online, so have many others.

accessible is the interface and what made you choose the Netgear. THe WD's

a new app fore people interested in project management

2012-03-22 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I was looking at an app today called Merlin. It's by a company called Project
Wizards.net.
This app has a free trial version and runs fore $211 Canadian. This app is
similar to MS Project but it's fore the Mac.
I've done some initial testing fore VO compatibility and this app look somewhat
promising. I can actually get somewhere with this app unlike the ommniplan from
omni group.
This app's biggest issue it seems is with unlabelled elements which seems like
an easily fixed issue. I have not contacted the developers as of yet as I am
not planning on purchasing this any time soon.
The reason that I am so interested in this type of app is that I had to use MS
Project in my Project Management class at college and would have loved to have
a Mac alternative.
I hope that someone on this list will find this of use to them.
Have a good day all,
Matthew Campbell.

Hi Moses.
I have a suggestion of how the setting get changed. If the rotar is set on the
option and you happen to flick your finger on the right place on the screen,
then you can make a change. VoiceOver does say it, but I can see how it could
not be noticed.

If I am annoyed by this, I just set the rotar on something like speech rate so
that nothing drastic gets changed.

Re: Mac Book Air & cooling fan?

2012-03-22 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
My Air runs cool 99% of the time, the only time it heats up is if I am
downloading and installing a huge Apple update, or if I am adding a lot of huge
files, such as copying a large video file etc.

but, even then the fans only come on for as long as that process lasts.

I stream high def video over my network to the Air, and the fan does not come
on...

this is an 11in 2011 model.

Re: Using your air in public.

2012-03-22 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Vivianna,

Personally I have an Air, the 11in model, as well as an iPad and iPhone.

I take my Air with me anywhere where I am heading on business, I do use it on
the train and take no specific measures to stop it being stolen, other than of
course not leaving it unattended. I do not, and would not get it out in a
coffee shop or somewhere like that. I do get it out in more up market wine bars
if needs be, but not say a Star Bucks.

If I am needing to surf the net or e-mail in somewhere like that, or the park
etc, I use my iPhone.

Re: Using your air in public.

2012-03-22 Thread Lewis Alexander
sorry to chime in here but I'm starting to find this bit of concern frustrating.

the whole purpose of a laptop is taking it on the road, to any location. the
macbook air lends itself perfectly, especially for networking, etc. so the
whole point of going to an internet cafe or a coffee shop with internet
services available has a great benefit. otherwise, the companies offering the
service would be wasting their time and money doing so.

a very simple solution to securing your notebook computer, whether apple or
windows based system is a kensington security lock which simply chains to a
solid leg or structure and locks to the system with a key lock.

I have used these products before and believe me, they make sense for security.

I don't take my macbook pro out on the road unless absolutely necessary,
primarily because it's a tailored model which cost me over £2500 and is my
office / technical system.. it's fully insured, etc but for on the road use,
I'd take out an older mac or what was once my hp business notebook
unfortunately stolen while on the road. (thug swept my case off my shoulder)

it's up to you whether you take your notebook on the road with you. as long as
you have some security on your system to prevent users logging in, etc and a
kensington cable lock, you're fairly well OK.

the whole concept of a laptop is portability. we're not just in business
anymore, laptops are used by general consumers as well. unlike the late 80's
and early / mid 90s where laptops cost an absolute fortune and were business
based systems.

Reconnecting a Refreshabraille to an iPod

2012-03-22 Thread Steve Holmes
One thing I notice with my Refreshabraille connected via bluetooth to
my iPod is whenever the screen locks, The Braille display appears to
go off line and show the standard startup message. If I hit the Home
button on the iPod, the display reconnects. I don't necessarily have
any problem with this but wonder if there is any way to force the
Refreshabraille to reconnect from the RB instead of having to hit the
Home button. I'm thinking of times where you might have the iThingy
tucked away in a bag or something and want to have complete control
from the Braille display. Once the device is active, total control is
possible but just don't let the screen time out and lock. Are there
any solutions for this?

adium, growl and similar: the end of the story

2012-03-22 Thread elena brescacin
hello,
at the end I have performed several tests on my macbook pro, to find a solution
for my third-party apps independent tts, which seemed to conflict with
voiceover when turned on.
my last consideration is: if voiceover talks using a Scansoft voice,
independently from language, system messages from third-party applications do
not talk! I can make an example: daniel compact for english, diego compact for
spanish, paolo compact for italian
these voices work instead, for english:
alex, bruce, fred, victoria, vicky... and similar. all those in that menu. The
ones coming from scansoft do not answer at all!
Shawn, May, and others using adium and/or skype with growl: would you please
give it a try, with voice called daniel compact?
before writing or calling apple I would like to have some statistics and
third-person-made tests!
thanks for help

That is why I turned off auto-lock. If I want to lock the device, I
hit the button, otherwise it stays on with the screen off. I find it
easiest this way. Besides, I often use the two together, reading
braille but doing some commands on the screen at the same time.

After you submit a boo for upload, return to the My Boos area.

Near the top of the screen is a notification area where you can monitor the
upload of your boo.

I don't use growl like I said because it annoyed me, so I completely got rid of

With voiceover Adium and Skype work fine with all of the voices already on the

Kindle App on iPhone

2012-03-22 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi All,

I downloaded the Kindle app so I can read some of the books that my wife is
reading. I can't, however, figure out how to get it to work. Has anybody had
success with the Kindle app? Is it accessible? Any tips?

It looks like, to me, that it is displaying images instead of rendering the
text.

Thx,

Re: Kindle App on iPhone

2012-03-22 Thread Esther
Hi Jeff,

There are a number of ebook apps that specifically disable VoiceOver's ability
to access the content in order to preserve digital rights management. This is
also true if you try to use the Barnes & Noble Nook app, for example. You'll
notice that usually you can access everything except for the actual content of
the text. That's being blocked. You can verify this by taking a screen
capture, and sending the results to an OCR app like Prizmo or TextGrabber. The
OCR app will tell you what the contents are, but obviously you're not going to
read the book by screen capturing every page and sending it to an OCR app.

If you want to read another example of this viewpoint, that the ability of
screen readers to access text would promote copyright violation, take a look at
Greg Kearney's posted response from Fictionwise in the archives, sent in reply
to his inquiry about ebook accessibility for their ebook reading app just a few
months after the iPhone 3GS was released with VoiceOver support:
• Fwd: Response for Support Ticket #102495
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg06200.html
Since this is the Mail Archive post, if you're reading on your computer, you
can also use access key shortcuts of Control-N to read down the thread for
other reader comments.

Best,

Esther

Re: Kindle App on iPhone

2012-03-22 Thread Esther
Hi Hank,

The issue for the Kindle app is that the Author's Guild brought suit when
Amazon added text-to-speech functionality to the second generation Kindle. One
of the consequences was that subsequently, only ebooks where text-to-speech
access is specifically granted can have this turned on for the Kindle. I think
that's about a third to half of commercially released ebooks. The second
consequence of that is that Amazon cannot release a Kindle app that offers
read-out-loud functionality with VoiceOver without being sued by the Author's
Guild under similar grounds. The argument is that such access would deprive
authors of income they would otherwise gain by selling audiobook rights. The
proposed solution for blind readers by the Author's Guild, is that there be a
means for each individual reader to go through a medical verification process
and petition to have such functionality enabled, and that the application could
then be unlocked for screen reader access on such a limited, per-individual
basis. Most visually impaired users would not consider that to be a practical
or workable process.

It has been pointed out that the quality of screen readers rendition of ebooks
is nothing like the quality of audio books. That's been conceded, but the
whole point that these versions are "listenable" and that the quality of
machine text-to-speech is likely to improve in the future makes the Author's
Guild take the stance that such screen reader access would infringe on
copyrights.

Since Apple will not permit any apps to selectively deny VoiceOver access to
content -- the only way to match the current objections of the Author's Guild
to text-to-speech access for some Kindle books -- apps like the Kindle are
built so that none of the content can be accessed with VoiceOver. The roots of
the restrictions on the Kindle app's accessibility do not rest with Amazon.
They've simply designed the app to comply with the Author's Guild restrictions.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Kindle App on iPhone

2012-03-22 Thread Ray Foret Jr
That's not quite true. It's not because of copy right. The truth is this.
It's because of the Author's guild. They don't want the blind to be able to

Re: Kindle App on iPhone

2012-03-22 Thread Esther
Hi Ray,

You're correct that the policy of blocking VoiceOver access to eBook content in
the Kindle app arises from the Author's Guild suit, but the guild is mostly
worried about readers who are not visually impaired making use of these
text-to-speech capabilities to listen to ebooks instead of buying audiobooks.
It's the very fact that Apple has been building in VoiceOver capabilities into
every iOS device and computer that constitutes the danger, from their point of
view. That's why a Kindle app for the PC, that can be used with screen readers
like JAWS, has been released, but there is no similar application for the Mac.
If the only way that you could access the Kindle ebook content on your computer
was by investing in blindness-specific software that equals or exceeds the cost
of your computer, it's pretty hard to argue that you configured your machine
this way just to avoid buying the audiobook versions. But the fact that every
iPhone, iPod Touch, an iPad now support VoiceOver, and that the same is true
for every Mac, means that any user of an iPhone, Mac, etc. could enable
VoiceOver functionality in reading Kindle ebooks, if this capability were not
explicitly blocked.

And so, if you carry the argument of the Author's Guild to its natural
conclusion, non-visually impaired Kindle customers who find VoiceOver's reading
"good enough" to listen to, will turn on this feature instead of buying
audiobook versions that they would otherwise purchase.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Facebook Audio and video Chat Accessible?

I would not go so far as to say that it is horribly inaccessible. There are
parts that are not useable - the dial pad for example. However if you have
already got contacts in your account you can successfully call them. There is
certainly lots to improve but I guess it is at least partly usable. At least
for what I use it.

Re: Deleting album from iPhone

2012-03-22 Thread Shen
Hi everyone,
I spoke to someone at Apple and was able to get clarification on the gesture.
It's very strange that it works every time in Messages and Mail, but in Music,
it seems to have some trouble.
So first, find where the item is on the screen. Move your finger until you find
it. Then do the double tap and hold on the second tap. The trick is that as
quickly as you can, right at the end of the triple click sound, slide your
finger to the right. So don't wait or anything, as soon as you hear the triple
click tone, slide your finger to the right.
When I did this, I got the delete confirmation more often than before. It's not
perfect, but at least it's working more effectively for me now.
Good luck.

 Hello all.
The subject line says it all. How do I delete a specific album from the
iPhone? I went into music, went to the artists tab, double tapped on the
artist I am interested in, tried to double tap and hold then while holding
swipe to the right on the album I wish to delete, but I wasn't able to
delete it. I've tried several times. Please advise. Thanks!
