growl

2012-02-15 Thread Badger, Nancy
I know this has been discussed before and I apologize. I just had a window pop
up on my mac that said "growl helper app system dialog." When I tried to read
it, nothing happened. What is growl and how do I deal with it? I didn't even
know I had it, that's why I didn't pay attention to the previous emails.
thanks

LibreOffice 3.5.0

2012-02-15 Thread Chris Blouch
Maybe it's just me but the new release of LibreOffice (the open source
competitor to OpenOffice) seems to be even worse for voiceover support.
At least on OpenOffice I could navigate a spreadsheet and it would
announce cell content. It wouldn't tell me which column or row I was in
but at least I got something. LibreOffice announced nothing and after a
few moments I started getting Voiceover Busy messages and then the whole
app crashed. This was on OSX 10.7 with 4GB RAM so it should have been
fine from a host system perspective.

a probably silly question about the IPhone

2012-02-15 Thread Jean-Claude Provost
Hi all,

I hope the moderators will forgive my slightly off-topic question on this list…
In my defence, I don't do this often:-)

How does one toggle the caps-lock function. The user guide says to tap shift
twice but, obviously, this can't work when using VoiceOver.

Thanks in advance for your answer…

Cheers to y'all!

Bookmarks

2012-02-15 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

I remember someone asked about bookmarks on this list a while ago. To see the
bookmark folders press VO B. To enable the folders to show up, you have to
interact with the horizontal splitter and set it to above zero. Safari wile say
busy, the only way to get out of this busy dialog is to quit and relaunch
VoiceOver. I do this regularly to enable me to select which bookmark folder I'd
like. I also did a podcast on this issue. It can be found at:

I hope this helps. have a great day.

Re: Shared Drive

2012-02-15 Thread Chris Blouch
Everything you need to share your Mac hard drive to your windows box is
already included in OSX. Just need to go into preferences, turn on File
Sharing in the Sharing preferences then go to Options and turn on SMB
(Windows) sharing. Further down there is also a list of users that you
want to have SMB sharing access so you'll need to turn those on as well.
So I log into my Mac as cblouch so on the windows side I map a network
drive to \\ip_address_of_my_mac\cblouch and choose Connect using
different credential and use my Mac username (cblouch) and password.
That should be all there is to it. You'll get another drive on your
Windows box which is actually the Mac's hard drive with all the usual
folders.

To put the shift lock on, place one finger on Shift and tap twice with another

Alternatively, move to shift, then tap three times. The tripple tap
with vo on is the same as the double tap with vo off. As Anne pointed
out, split tapping twice does the same thing, which I didn't know.

Hi Wes.
First, we ask questions about iPhones and iPads on here all the time. Many
times they relate to the Mac anyway, and they are starting to be closely
related questions too.

It is not a is not a silly question on the iPhone that you asked. I couldn't
get it to work at first, until I tried tapping on the on-screen shift three
times instead of twice. Just remember that when the directions say once or
twice, we've got to do an extra one. I got it to work when I did that.

Re: Captcha Solving on the Mac

2012-02-15 Thread Adie
Hi all

It's not just people with hearing impairments who have trouble with
these audio captchas. They are, generally speaking, of appalling
quality. The ones which contain a sentence, as opposed to unrelated
words and numbers, are a little easier, but really, how can any site
think they are fit for purpose?

I usually try to record what the thing says, but it often is
completely indecipherable. Sometimes I swear I have it right and it
still rejects it.

The site which most annoys me is the UK govt e-petitions site, which
has these for all signatories. My MP even complained to the Cabinet
Office and we just got the brush off. Have any of these people ever
tried one of these themselves? I think not.

It is particularly offensive when they then tell you it's to test if
you are human. Presumably they thk we are not.

Anyway, even I sometimes get fed up of complaining about them to site
owners, but I suppose we just have to keep doing it until they stop
using them. There are other more accessible solutions to the humanity
thing.

Re: Captcha Solving on the Mac

2012-02-15 Thread Esther
Hi,

I've used the audio captcha for Google Groups, and agree this isn't ideal, but
it's doable. I know this won't work for everyone, but the original poster has
an iPhone, I think. What about using the free VizWiz app, taking a picture of
the screen with the iPhone camera, and sending a question, "What is the text in
this captcha?" Alternatively, as suggested earlier, you can take a screen
capture with Command-Shift-3 and send this as an attachment via email to a
sighted friend. The files show up on your Desktop.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Vo Support for Brailliant 40?

2012-02-15 Thread Shanna Stichler
I did that, yes. VO can't seem to detect the display, even though if I pair
it as I would any other bluetooth device, my computer has no problems. Also,
my IPhone will not find the device at all.

Did you go to settings, general, accessibility, VoiceOver, Braille? This
is the place to pair Braille displays, and not via settings, general,
bluetooth.

Re: Major Finder Problem Caused by Dropbox!

2012-02-15 Thread John Panarese
No, you can still fool the newer Minis into thinking you have a monitor. I
have a mid 2011, and it works fine without a monitor. You need to get a mini
VGA display port and a converter box. It's a setup that will run about $60 in
total, but it works fine if you really don't want or you don't have a monitor.

Re: A Question About Facebook Apps and The Mac

2012-02-15 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I don't know of an app other than Safari to use with a Mac and FB. I use the
mobile site, and I navigate the posts from others' walls I subscribe to by
repeatedly using the VO Command H, move between headings, commands; all the
stuff on my wall happens under heading level six, apparently. I do have a
problem with the page auto-refreshing periodically, but a bunch of repeated
taps of the headings command, or an items chooser for a name or word I remember
gets me back to where I was relatively painlessly. I use the full site, just
because that's what I cut my teeth on.

Comments you make to someone else go on *THEIR* wall, not your wall, so there's
no way to have them show up unless you copy them manually into the text box for
your own wall posts. Then, you'd also have to copy the relevant thread, so I
really think this is not very efficient, but it's the only way I can think for
your comments on someone else's wall to show up on yours.

Re: Major Finder Problem Caused by Dropbox!

2012-02-15 Thread Esther
Hi Cara and Others,

The original information about the adapter to fool recent generation Mac Minis
into thinking a monitor is connected came from Chris Blouch, as John mentioned
in various earlier posts on this subject. I'll paste in Chris' post with the
part number link below.

However, an easier way to find the link to specific adapter from Sewell
Electronics is to Google for John's account, "Adventures with My Mac Mini" at
macfortheblind, since he links the device there (I search on "macfortheblind
mac mini monitor") to pull up this page at:
http://macfortheblind.com/?p=591

Here's the post to this list from Chris, from last August:

Right, as far as the Mini knows it is hooked up to a monitor, which happes to
be the VGA to NTSC adapter. I think I paid about $30 for the VGA to NTSC box.
Yup, it was this one:
http://sewelldirect.com/pc-to-tv.asp

It does take a USB port for power but my Mini has four so that was fine. I also
already had an HDMI or displayport to VGA adapter from somewhere or other. I
think they only ship with HDMI to DVI these days.
The end result is the mini stops its fruitless search for a monitor that isn't
there so it can move on to more important things like doing your work.

Re: Major Finder Problem Caused by Dropbox!

2012-02-15 Thread John Panarese
Absolutely. If you can get a monitor, that is obviously the easiest
solution. In my situation, I don't have the space for a monitor with the
current setup. So, the converter box and adaptor fit the bill. However, I do
have a monitor around in case I need sighted assistance. I just wanted folks
to know that there is a setup that will work if they don't have a monitor and
that Apple is not completely aware that the newer Minis still can't work well
without a monitor. Please contact me off list if anyone wants the actual
hardware recommendations that were suggested to me and I now use.

accessible world classrooms

2012-02-15 Thread Badger, Nancy
I tried everything I could think of to get into the accessible world classrooms
for the first time tonight. I downloaded what they said to download, I found a
place where they asked for a username and password but I didn't have one. My
husband who is sighted tried and he couldn't get in either. Can someone give
me instructions using a mac with voice over?
Thanks

Re: Major Finder Problem Caused by Dropbox!

2012-02-15 Thread annelie robledo
Thank you for this tip. I have a mac book and lately my finder was extremely
slow. I removed drop box from the log in and every thing is good now. Again
thank you.
