tip: audio cd burning

2011-10-21 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi listers,
Burn is a mac program that, among other things, can burn audio CD's outside of
itunes. If your music is in the itunes library, then it is simple to do it from
itunes, but I had an album in the flac file format that I wanted to burn, and
rather than firing up fusion and windows, burn is an accessible utility. Just
googhle mac burn audio cd and you will find it. The only thing to get started
is, that you must first interact with the toolbar and hit the audio button, so
that you can burn an audio cd. Then, you simply hit add, select the files to
add, exit that dialog by hitting the open button, and then hit burn. Easy and
effective, and it's free. No app store needed. Just get the zip file. There's a
64-bit version as well on their site.

Oh another thing I almost forgot to mention, is that if you want to burn a live
CD, i.e. one without silence gaps between tracks, then you cannot do this on a
per CD basis, but you have to enter a 0 second gap preference, command comma
from the main screen, for each CD. So, if you are going to burn audio, then
remember to check the burn program preferences to make sure your gap setting is
right for the content you burn. Just in case any one was looking for an audio
burner on the mac that is voiceover accessible. This one is.
Paul.

Steve Jobs Biography Reveals He Told Obama, 'You're Headed For A One-Term Presidency'

2011-10-21 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
A glimpse in to the life of a man who changed the life of so many people.

Steve Jobs Biography Reveals He Told Obama, 'You're Headed For A One-Term
Presidency'

In one of the most hotly-anticipated biographies of the year, "Steve Jobs,"
author Walter Isaacson reveals that the Apple CEO offered to design political
ads for President Obama's 2012 campaign despite being highly critical of the
administration's policies and that Jobs refused potentially life-saving surgery
on his pancreatic cancer because he felt it was too invasive. Nine months
later, he got the operation but it was too late.

Those are just some of the tidbits about Jobs' life revealed in the upcoming
biography, a copy of which was obtained by The Huffington Post. The publication
date of the official biography of the notoriously-secretive Apple co-founder
was pushed up after his death in October. "I wanted my kids to know me,"
Isaacson quoted Jobs as saying in their final interview. "I wasn't always there
for them and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did."

Among other details unearthed in the book on the notoriously-secretive Apple
co-founder:

Jobs' Meeting With Obama

Jobs, who was known for his prickly, stubborn personality, almost missed
meeting President Obama in the fall of 2010 because he insisted that the
president personally ask him for a meeting. Though his wife told him that Obama
"was really psyched to meet with you," Jobs insisted on the personal
invitation, and the standoff lasted for five days. When he finally relented and
they met at the Westin San Francisco Airport, Jobs was characteristically
blunt. He seemed to have transformed from a liberal into a conservative.

"You're headed for a one-term presidency," he told Obama at the start of their
meeting, insisting that the administration needed to be more business-friendly.
As an example, Jobs described the ease with which companies can build factories
in China compared to the United States, where "regulations and unnecessary
costs" make it difficult for them.

Jobs also criticized America's education system, saying it was "crippled by
union work rules," noted Isaacson. "Until the teachers' unions were broken,
there was almost no hope for education reform." Jobs proposed allowing
principals to hire and fire teachers based on merit, that schools stay open
until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11 months a year.

Aiding Obama's Reelection Campaign

Jobs suggested that Obama meet six or seven other CEOs who could express the
needs of innovative businesses -- but when White House aides added more names
to the list, Jobs insisted that it was growing too big and that "he had no
intention of coming." In preparation for the dinner, Jobs exhibited his
notorious attention to detail, telling venture capitalist John Doerr that the
menu of shrimp, cod and lentil salad was "far too fancy" and objecting to a
chocolate truffle dessert. But he was overruled by the White House, which cited
the president's fondness for cream pie.

Though Jobs was not that impressed by Obama, later telling Isaacson that his
focus on the reasons that things can't get done "infuriates" him, they kept in
touch and talked by phone a few more times. Jobs even offered to help create
Obama's political ads for the 2012 campaign. "He had made the same offer in
2008, but he'd become annoyed when Obama's strategist David Axelrod wasn't
totally deferential," writes Isaacson. Jobs later told the author that he
wanted to do for Obama what the legendary "morning in America" ads did for
Ronald Reagan.

Bill Gates And Steve Jobs

Bill Gates was fascinated by Steve Jobs but found him "fundamentally odd" and
"weirdly flawed as a human being," and his tendency to be "either in the mode
of saying you were shit or trying to seduce you."

Jobs once declared about Gates, "He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid
once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger."

After 30 years, Gates would develop a grudging respect for Jobs. "He really
never knew much about technology, but he had an amazing instinct for what
works," he said. But Jobs never reciprocated by fully appreciating Gates' real
strengths. "Bill is basically unimaginative and has never invented anything,
which is why I think he's more comfortable now in philanthropy than technology.
He just shamelessly ripped off other people's ideas."

Meeting His Biological Father

Jobs, who was adopted, was a customer at a Mediterranean restaurant north of
San Jose without realizing that it was owned by his biological father -- from
whom he was estranged. He eventually met his real Dad -- "It was amazing," he
later said of the revelation. "I had been to that restaurant a few times, and I
remember meeting the owner. He was Syrian. Balding. We shook hands."

Nevertheless Jobs still had no desire to see him. "I was a wealthy man b

2011-10-21 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

Re: getting to different versions of a document

2011-10-21 Thread John Panarese
You can either go to the Versions, button after you stop navigating with
the text edit area and then navigate to, All Versions and VO space on that. An
easier way, though, is to select the, revert document, from the file menu and
activate the Versions button in that dialog. You will have to interact with
the vertical slider to see the saved version dates and once you have a date of
a document, you navigate to the text area to see the actual version of the
document.

I had it lock screen for a while before ios5, but i prefer it to be

Steve Jobs Biography Reveals He Told Obama, 'You're Headed For A One-
Term Presidency'

In one of the most hotly-anticipated biographies of the year, "Steve
Jobs," author Walter Isaacson reveals that the Apple CEO offered to
design political ads for President Obama's 2012 campaign despite
being highly critical of the administration's policies and that Jobs
refused potentially life-saving surgery on his pancreatic cancer
because he felt it was too invasive. Nine months later, he got the
operation but it was too late.

Those are just some of the tidbits about Jobs' life revealed in the
upcoming biography, a copy of which was obtained by The Huffington
Post. The publication date of the official biography of the
notoriously-secretive Apple co-founder was pushed up after his death
in October. "I wanted my kids to know me," Isaacson quoted Jobs as
saying in their final interview. "I wasn't always there for them and
I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did."

Among other details unearthed in the book on the notoriously-
secretive Apple co-founder:

Jobs' Meeting With Obama

Jobs, who was known for his prickly, stubborn personality, almost
missed meeting President Obama in the fall of 2010 because he
insisted that the president personally ask him for a meeting. Though
his wife told him that Obama "was really psyched to meet with you,"
Jobs insisted on the personal invitation, and the standoff lasted
for five days. When he finally relented and they met at the Westin
San Francisco Airport, Jobs was characteristically blunt. He seemed
to have transformed from a liberal into a conservative.

"You're headed for a one-term presidency," he told Obama at the
start of their meeting, insisting that the administration needed to
be more business-friendly. As an example, Jobs described the ease
with which companies can build factories in China compared to the
United States, where "regulations and unnecessary costs" make it
difficult for them.

Jobs also criticized America's education system, saying it was
"crippled by union work rules," noted Isaacson. "Until the teachers'
unions were broken, there was almost no hope for education reform."
Jobs proposed allowing principals to hire and fire teachers based on
merit, that schools stay open until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11
months a year.

Aiding Obama's Reelection Campaign

Jobs suggested that Obama meet six or seven other CEOs who could
express the needs of innovative businesses -- but when White House
aides added more names to the list, Jobs insisted that it was
growing too big and that "he had no intention of coming." In
preparation for the dinner, Jobs exhibited his notorious attention
to detail, telling venture capitalist John Doerr that the menu of
shrimp, cod and lentil salad was "far too fancy" and objecting to a
chocolate truffle dessert. But he was overruled by the White House,
which cited the president's fondness for cream pie.

Though Jobs was not that impressed by Obama, later telling Isaacson
that his focus on the reasons that things can't get done
"infuriates" him, they kept in touch and talked by phone a few more
times. Jobs even offered to help create Obama's political ads for
the 2012 campaign. "He had made the same offer in 2008, but he'd
become annoyed when Obama's strategist David Axelrod wasn't totally
deferential," writes Isaacson. Jobs later told the author that he
wanted to do for Obama what the legendary "morning in America" ads
did for Ronald Reagan.

Bill Gates And Steve Jobs

Bill Gates was fascinated by Steve Jobs but found him "fundamentally
odd" and "weirdly flawed as a human being," and his tendency to be
"either in the mode of saying you were shit or trying to seduce you."

Jobs once declared about Gates, "He'd be a broader guy if he had
dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger."

After 30 years, Gates would develop a grudging respect for Jobs. "He
really never knew much about technology, but he had an amazing
instinct for what works," he said. But Jobs ne

VoiceOver responsiveness in apps in general.
So I'd give a reinstallation a try and see if it helps.

Re: Creating Calendars in iCal Question

2011-10-21 Thread Scott Howell
Sarai, I do not have any problems with creating and changing the names of
calendars.
Follow these steps:

1. Go to the menu/File/New Calendar (a submenu).
2. Choose where you want the calendar.
3. The popover appears and you need to interact with the calendar table.
4. Navigate to Column two and interact with the "Untitled" name.
5. Begin typing over or erase and insert your own text.

I hope that helps.

Re: vmware fusion allocate 1 or 2 cores?

2011-10-21 Thread Sean Murphy

Hi All.

I read on the VMWare web site in the community blogs that Snow Leopard has
issues with syncing multiple cores under VMWare. I don't have the actual
information at hand. They recommended 1 core due to the overhead that is
caused by having 2 cores and the Snow Leopard issue with keeping the cores
in sync. The issue can slow down the performance of the guess environment.

I haven't seen anything for Lion. This issue might be fixed.

Re: A program like active sync for the mac?

2011-10-21 Thread Sean Murphy
Hi,

You can apparently change keys within the MAC by using an app call remapper. It
will permit you to change hotkeys within the Mac. As yet I haven't played with
this feature.

The whole issue of re-mapping keys within the Guess OS as far as I am concern
is a major bug. People just keep applying the keymapping work arounds. Give you
some examples of keys that are owned by the MAC and doesn't matter what screen
mode you have set VMWare too. MAC will always capture the key.

Command + h which hides the window.

If your keyboard has focus in the guess. Then the host should not intersept the
key until you press control + command. Only time I would expect this rule to be
broken is when you use unity mode.

Subject: Editing MIDI Events In Garage Band

Hi guys,

Is there a way to accessibly edit MIDI events in Garage Band? I'm looking
for a kind of equivalent to the event list view in Sonar. Does Garage Band
have anything like this? I want to be able to change the length, pitch,
velocity, and position of notes in a track. If Garage Band won't cut it,
would I be able to use either Logic or Pro Tools?

Regards,

Difference between two sets of commands?

Re: Difference between two sets of commands?

2011-10-21 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Bill,

VO-shift-space is a simple mouse-click. VO-command-shift-space first performs a
mouse-down, that is, it begins the dragging operation. When you move to the
place you want to drag the item, press VO-command-shift-space again to release
the object into its new location, or "mouse-up".

The VO-comma and VO-period are also beginning and end dragging commands. I'm
not sure how they are different "under the hood", but I will often try one
method when the other isn't working for me. It seems that the VO-comma and
-period commands first perform VO actions, then the mouse is manipulated after
the two positions are marked.

HTH,
Teresa

Subject: Editing MIDI Events In Garage Band

Hi guys,

Is there a way to accessibly edit MIDI events in Garage Band? I'm
looking for a kind of equivalent to the event list view in Sonar. Does
Garage Band have anything like this? I want to be able to change the
length, pitch, velocity, and position of notes in a track. If Garage
Band won't cut it, would I be able to use either Logic or Pro Tools?

Regards,

Gavin

I'm actually going to end up doing something very similar myself. I'm going to
clone the drive first and I suspect pulling all my user data (not application
settings and all that) back will just make the process even easier. :)

Not that one Ricardo! lol!
I was looking for it in the keyboard shortcuts as you suggested!
It looks like [with my limited knowledge] you cannot change the hard wired
commands like command+shift+d!
Unless you or someone else knows different!
And I still do not know if a script could do the task!
All the best!

I assume, then, that if I just disconnect my USB Time Machine backup drive,
then press command+r at start up, I can do the very same totally clean install
using the recovery tool right? And then, just manually copy over my music,
documents and apps and then just reinstall the various license keys. Is that
about right?

Re: an easy but time consuming fix for those having Lion issues

2011-10-21 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
Once you boot from the recovery partition, you'll need to go in to disc utility
from the table that will come up and erase you're hard drive first and then
you'll be able to do a clean install.
The reason I made a flash drive is because I didn't want to wait all day for my
crappy internet connection to download the 4 GB of installation material that
Lion needs to set up.
HTH.

Re: an easy but time consuming fix for those having Lion issues

2011-10-21 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Easy. once the new install is complete, you just plug back in the USB drive on
which your old volume was made. Then, you just manually move over the stuff
you want to kepe from that volume. Now, since the new install will work much
better, completely erase the backup and do the hole thing over again; meaning
the backup.

I am so glad that ®Apple™ has made this possible for us; and that ®Lion™ just
improves on it.

Re: Apple is Awsome wasFor sale: iPhone 4

2011-10-21 Thread Garth Humphreys
I would definitely take it in to the apple store if you have one near by. I
have just had my iPhone 4 replaced at no charge. I do not have Apple care
either. I had dropped my phone on concrete and the screen was completely
shattered. The Apple rep said that it would normally be $179 to replace the
phone but as I had not had any physical damage to the phone previously they
would cover it under the normal 12 meh warrantee. I have heard on some of the
tech podcasts that apple have a semi unofficial :we're Awsome" policy.
Supposedly one of the criteria is that you don't lie to them. You just bring in
the phone or whatever and tell them exactly what happened cause they'll know
anyway. I guess this is more relevant with things like water damage then it is
for dropping. There would be other criteria as well of course but I have heard
lots of stories from friends etc about how Apple have gone above and beyond
what they would have to. This has been with things like mine which were
obviously user damage. With something like an ear piece not working properly, I
would be extremely surprised if it cost you anything at all to get fixed. You
would probably find that they would just take your old phone and go e you a new
one. You could then look at selling the new iPhone 4 on eBay and using the
money on a new iPhone 4S. I am just waiting to see how much the new iPhones are
going to be on my works staff plan before deciding what to do.

Re: Apple is Awsome wasFor sale: iPhone 4

2011-10-21 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
this happened to me on my macbook a few months back. I took it in to
have the keyboard repaired. Its over three years old. I expected to
have to pay for it or at least pay a minimum charge. Not only was it
free, they replaced the liaminent making the computer look like a
brand new unit on the outside. And my brother, who was one of the
first iphone users under a t & t said he had them replace his three or
four times no questions asked. good luck to you, max
