reasons to get a mac

4. From the buyer's perspective, in this case the fund paying for the mac for a
blind person, is a mac cheaper than a pc?
The mac is expensive as a 1 time purchase. i can aggree with that on that
perspective 100%. do the math, considering a person who is willing to spend
about 600$ for a good PC like an HP if they get one at best buy or PC richard's
which is reasonable but a bit expensive for some. Sometimes you can get a good
HP PC for around $400 at walmart if you're lucky to get A soni or HP for that
price. Add the cost of jaws on top of the price of either $400 at Walmart or
$600 at Best buy which comes out to at least from $1300-1500 assuming that you
get the standard version of jfw which costs about $900. That assumes you got
your computer within the price range of $400-600 whereas you get the mac, you
spend 1199 1 time but you get the screenreader included at no charge. no one
can beatt that. In fact, it's cheap

Re: reasons to get a mac

2011-09-02 Thread Scott Howell
To further expand on a few points.

1. PCs are less expensive because they are essentially subsidized by
third-party software vendors. Microsoft includes a test drive version of
Office, but they pay HP, Dell, etc. for the opportunity to install such.
2. There is a considerably larger quantity of PC hardware available for vendors
and DYIers. THis does help to keep costs a bit more competitive for all.
3. Most PC software costs more on average than its Mac counterparts.
4. There will always be an additional learning curve for a blind user
regardless of which platform they use. The additional learning curve is the
screen access software. The added learning curve for most switchers from PC to
Mac is putting aside a lot of what they know from WIndows. For example, WIndows
screen readers basically present information in a linear fashion and the Mac
pretty much breaks all those concepts and especially on the iOS platform.
5. THe initial cost of a Mac is greater than most PCs; however, the overall
cost of ownership including software is less expensive. Of course you are
getting top quality hardware for your money and innovation does cost more. The
Mac Mini is a perfect example of innovation that actually is also quite
affordable.

So, in general I would have to say that for someone who is considering the
purchase of a Mac will find that such purchase is less expensive than the
purchase of a PC and accompanying screen reader. Ah and for those who say you
can get a screen reader for free, please don't bother making the argument. I
have not seen any of the free screen readers provide the same level of access
as does the paid stuff available. DOn't get me wrong, I would love to see the
alternatives blow the paid competition away, but development costs money even
when it is free.

Lion: Safari and Loading Pages

2011-09-02 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello.

I may have inadvertently changed something, now, when I click on a
link in Safari, Voicever announces, pressed link, and there is no
longer an indication of when the new page loads.
It does load, but silently, with no audible indication of the download progress.

Any hints as to how to get it back to the typical behavior would be
appreciated, and thanks.

When I download books from Bookshare, I use unarchiver to unzip them, then
click on the XML file, and it opens in Safari. Have you tried this? I do have

A few Mail questions

2011-09-02 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.

A few novice mail questions, if I may.

First, How can I get an imap mailbox to show in the favorites list so I can
use a command number key to call it up? Is that even doable? Seems like a
lot of work to change to another mailbox, if not.

Second. I wanted to move a message into a temp folder I have in my gmail
imap account. I right clicked, moved down to move to another mailbox,
pressed right arrow to call upthe list of mailboxes, selected the mailbox
and tried both pressing enter and spacebar different times. The message
remains in my inbox. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

more system sound feedback?

2011-09-02 Thread Traci
Hi all,

Is there a way to have more sound feedback on Mac? I'm still quite new, and
I'm switching from windows, it is something that has surprised me.

For example, when downloading a program from Safari, how do I know it's
progress or when it is completed?

Also when I connected or ejected an external hard drive, I don't remember
hearing a sound.

Thank you,
Traci

Once you click install, and then continue, there are 2 more except and

Backing up using VM fusion

2011-09-02 Thread Eric Caron
Dear list,

I have a bootcamp partition with Win 7. I'd like to back it up but
have not found a good solution. If I were to purchase VM Fusion and convert my
partition could I then use Carbon copy cloner to back up windows as it is
probably part of my Mac HD at that point?

Related question, If I want to run Lyon with all my resources, including my 4
GB ram, can I just not open the VM Fusion program? then when I Need Windows
run the VM for the time I need it?

Thanks for tips as this part of the Mac world is very new to me.

Re: more system sound feedback?

2011-09-02 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Tracy,

I also miss having the sound that tells you when a USB devise is added
or removed. There is no option for that on the Mac. However you will find
ways to hear download status or status of something happening, There are
settings for playing a tone or saying percent. once you choose this you need
to have focus on the correct spot in the application to hear it. I usually
find the tone works better as the percentage tends to talk over itself. I'm
pretty sure this is in the VO preferences under verbosity. Probably under
announcements. I hope this helps. I have to run or I would be more specific!

Disabling start up programs on the Mac

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me how to disable programs that start up when I boot up
my Mac?

Also, how do you remove a bootcamp partition and allocate the space back to
your Mac's hd?

Kind regards

Re: Disabling start up programs on the Mac

2011-09-02 Thread Jon Cohn
I am afraid you will have to be a little more specific.

1. In Lion by default every program that was running when you logout or
shutdown the computer will be restarted.
2. You can mark programs to start at login via the DOCK and/or system
preferences.
3. Several utility programs are started by init / Launch / cron including file
sharing and printer queueing systems.

Which of these are you trying to work with?

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Disabling start up programs on the Mac

Hi Gram,

About the partition removal. You get rid of it the same way you built
it. Go to the utilities folder under applications then to bootcamp. start the
app. there will be a button for create or remove bootcamp partition. select
that and follow the directions. It is straightforward. I hope this helps.

Re: Multilingual Braille tables under Lion

2011-09-02 Thread Geoff Shang

On Thu, 1 Sep 2011, Paul Erkens wrote:

So, given the 4-byte representation of characters in utf8 unicode, a
braille table could easily be made up based on that character set. This
would of course imply that some braille dot patterns would occur more
than once in unicode, because an accented letter in Polish, looks the
same in braille as a c cedille in French. They are 2 distinct characters
for the sighted, but one and the same symbol in braille.

Yes.

Why is it, that we don't yet have a unified unicode utf8 braille table?
Any idea?

Because it would be like herding cats.

The International Council on English Braille (ICEB) consists of 7
countries - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, The
United Kingdom and The United States. Back in (I think) 1992, the Braille
Authority of North America (BANA) began looking at the problem of a
unified Braille code. This code would unify separate codes used for
literary Braille, mathematics, science and computer usage.

After many thousands of hours of work, countless meetings, lots of
politicing and a fair amount of naval-gazing on the subject of the best
way to represent things in Braille, the Unified English Braille Code
(UEBC), also known as Unified English Braille (UEB), was eventually
adopted as an official English Braille code by ICEB in 2004. This means
that it took 12 years for only 7 countries, all speaking English, to agree
on a unified code, a code that none of these countries were obligated to
adopt as their official code.

7 years further on, and I admit to being a bit out of tuch, I think 5
countries have officially adopted it. One of the remaining two is
reportedly thinking about it, and The United States is apparently not at
all interested, even though the effort to create the code began there.

My point with all this is that it took 7 countries speaking the same
language 12 years to develop a standard they could all live with, and 7
years later they've not all adopted it yet. Considering the infinitely
more difficult task of getting a single Braille code for all known
languages that everyone would be happy with, and I fear this would be
simply impossible to do.

Of course, I'd ove to be wrong. But to use your example, which of the two
countries would be prepared to give up the symbol they're used to?

Geoff.

Moving mail to their perspective mailboxes revisited

2011-09-02 Thread Johnny Angel!
Hi folks,

Is there more then just one way to move mail into their mailboxes? As it is,
one has to first close the post before using the ctrl+option+shift+M command.
Is there an alternative command that will allow you to move mail without having
to first close the post you wish to move?

Thanks,

Johnny

2011-09-02 Thread Matt Dierckens
Hi all,
I have a question about moving files into folder, is there a way of moving
email into seperate folders especially for the IPhone? I am wanting to put two
folders on gmail. One for college and one for mac info. Inbox gets cluttered
and its hard to organize the emails this way. Thanks in advance for any
suggestions.

several duplicated mail messages

2011-09-02 Thread Johnny Angel!
Hi all,

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Sometimes I will get a piece of mail in Lion Mail that keeps multiplying
itself. I have seen a miracle happen where I would move a certain post into a
mailbox only to be surprised to come back to my inbox to see the same post I
just moved. The first time this happened to me a couple of weeks ago, I
thought I was doing something wrong in understanding how to move mail. But I
found out that I was doing things right, but the mail was just remaking itself
in the inbox even after moving it. Strange.

Thanks
Johnny Angel!

Hi all,

I know of course, of iTunes for radio, however is there other options? I've

Thanks,

Trackpad acting oddly

2011-09-02 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hello,

My trackpad has been acting really weird. If I have trackpad commander on,
voiceover randomly does various commands, such as what seems to be a flick
right or left to go to the next or previous item, double tapping, muting
voiceover, etc. When voiceover is off, others report that the mouse randomly
goes across the screen.

I thought perhaps i had gotten something on the trackpad, which would cause it
to think gestures were being done, but it is fairly clean, and we wiped it off
to make sure.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: Trackpad acting oddly

2011-09-02 Thread Tim Kilburn
I've noticed similar things when Trackpad commander is on but only when using
VO. I've just chalked it up to my thumbs getting close enough to the trackpad
to be sensed and thus causing the issues. Therefore, I've stopped using the TP
commander when doing lots of typing sorts of things. I can't comment on the
behaviour your mentioning when VO is off.

Later…

Re: iPod touch wifi question

Hi,

Usually, you go into the Settings then into the WIFI connection and then you're
able to edit in from within there.

Thanks.

I bbelieve this is the podcast we are talking about. It has all of the Lion
VoiceOver documentation in mp3 format too.

Maybe the official podcast name would help since there is the ability to
search for podcasts. Does anyone know the official name of the podcast?

There are a few options. The easiest is to use the Subscribe to podcast
in the advanced menu of iTunes.

If you goto the feed: url in Safari, then you should be able to review the
podcast there. there will also be a subscribe in mail button on the
Safari page. If you subscribe in mail then the a/v material in the
podcast will appear as an attachment to the text of the RSS blurb.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Hi Esther,

Regarding podcast feeds. If I want to subscribe to a given podcast, of
which I know there is a feed for it, do I always do that in iTunes? I
don't suppose that all podcasts on the web can also be found in itunes.
So my next question is, like you have juice on windows as a podcatcher,
and podcaster and downcaster on an iphone, do I need to use a special
program to subscribe to podcast feeds, or can I just do that in safari as
well? Rss is still confusing to me, because mail can do something with
rss, safari can handle rss as well, but I still don't know how to apply
rss in these programs. If all I want is subscribe to a random podcast, of
which there is afeed address on a site somewhere, how can I do that?

Hello Alfredo,

Vision Australia has also been releasing their podcasts through iTunes,
and you can subscribe to:

• Apple and Other Accessible technology By David Woodbridge
http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/apple-accessibility/id423121261

The two podcast episodes describing "Using Auto Spelling Suggestions in
Lion" and "Using Word Completion Suggestions" were released two days
ago. These podcasts periodically get updated on the Vision Australia web
site to provide "permanent" links since only the last several episodes
are available on the feed. I posted the link and the information a
little over a month ago when they started coming out with podcasts about
Lion. John Panarese has also put links for this up at his macfortheblind
web site of VoiceOver resources.

If you don't want to subscribe via iTunes, you can go to the PodBean web
site that David Woodbridge maintains:

http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com/
or check out the RSS feed and download the individual episodes:
feed://davidwoodbr.podbean.com/feed/

I subscribed to the podcasts in Podcaster by putting that last feed
address into the field for importing new podcasts (double tap
"Directory" which is fourth of 5 buttons on main screen, navigate to
"import" on the "Podcast Directory" screen and double tap, then type or
paste in the feed address.)

If you forget this information, just Google "Vision Australia podcasts
macfortheblind".

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
