reasons to get a mac
Hey listers, I have some opinions concerning the reasons for getting a mac. the answers to the questions are as follows: 1. Which part of the blind community is best helped with a mac? > A. ther's no specific community who prefers the mac because anyone can buy it > since access is universal for blind or sighted people. From the buyer's perspective, in this case the fund paying for the mac for a blind person, is a mac cheaper than a pc? The mac is expensive as a 1 time purchase. i can aggree with that on that perspective 100%. do the math, considering a person who is willing to spend about 600$ for a good PC like an HP if they get one at best buy or PC richard's which is reasonable but a bit expensive for some. Sometimes you can get a good HP PC for around $400 at walmart if you're lucky to get A soni or HP for that price. Add the cost of jaws on top of the price of either $400 at Walmart or $600 at Best buy which comes out to at least from $1300-1500 assuming that you get the standard version of jfw which costs about $900. That assumes you got your computer within the price range of $400-600 whereas you get the mac, you spend 1199 1 time but you get the screenreader included at no charge. no one can beatt that. In fact, it's cheap
Re: reasons to get a mac
To further expand on a few points. 1. PCs are less expensive because they are essentially subsidized by third-party software vendors. Microsoft includes a test drive version of Office, but they pay HP, Dell, etc. for the opportunity to install such. 2. There is a considerably larger quantity of PC hardware available for vendors and DYIers. THis does help to keep costs a bit more competitive for all. 3. Most PC software costs more on average than its Mac counterparts. 4. There will always be an additional learning curve for a blind user regardless of which platform they use. The additional learning curve is the screen access software. The added learning curve for most switchers from PC to Mac is putting aside a lot of what they know from WIndows. For example, WIndows screen readers basically present information in a linear fashion and the Mac pretty much breaks all those concepts and especially on the iOS platform. 5. THe initial cost of a Mac is greater than most PCs; however, the overall cost of ownership including software is less expensive. Of course you are getting top quality hardware for your money and innovation does cost more. The Mac Mini is a perfect example of innovation that actually is also quite affordable. So, in general I would have to say that for someone who is considering the purchase of a Mac will find that such purchase is less expensive than the purchase of a PC and accompanying screen reader. Ah and for those who say you can get a screen reader for free, please don't bother making the argument. I have not seen any of the free screen readers provide the same level of access as does the paid stuff available. DOn't get me wrong, I would love to see the alternatives blow the paid competition away, but development costs money even when it is free. Lion: Safari and Loading Pages
Hello. I may have inadvertently changed something, now, when I click on a link in Safari, Voicever announces, pressed link, and there is no longer an indication of when the new page loads. It does load, but silently, with no audible indication of the download progress. Any hints as to how to get it back to the typical behavior would be appreciated, and thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. A few Mail questions
Hi. A few novice mail questions, if I may. First, How can I get an imap mailbox to show in the favorites list so I can use a command number key to call it up? Is that even doable? Seems like a lot of work to change to another mailbox, if not. Second. I wanted to move a message into a temp folder I have in my gmail imap account. I right clicked, moved down to move to another mailbox, pressed right arrow to call upthe list of mailboxes, selected the mailbox and tried both pressing enter and spacebar different times. The message remains in my inbox. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. more system sound feedback?

RE: Problem installing VM Fusion tools
Hi. Actually, I had my wife trying to help, and still very confused. I had the Fusion disk in the Super drive, and when I tried installing the tools we got some of error message saying boot driver could not be found. On the screen I currently have a series of options, connect super drive, connect Apple IR receiver, Connect usb host controller cd/dvd, hard disk, network adapter, sound card, share folders and a close button. I am still in a state where the menu offers me the choice to cancel tools installation, but I don't see any more confirm boxes to click through. Suggestions appreciated. Re: more system sound feedback?
Hi Tracy, I also miss having the sound that tells you when a USB devise is added or removed. There is no option for that on the Mac. However you will find ways to hear download status or status of something happening, There are settings for playing a tone or saying percent. once you choose this you need to have focus on the correct spot in the application to hear it. I usually find the tone works better as the percentage tends to talk over itself. I'm pretty sure this is in the VO preferences under verbosity. Probably under announcements. I hope this helps. I have to run or I would be more specific! Eric Caron On Sep 2, 2011, at 11:12 AM, Traci wrote: > Hi all, > > Is there a way to have more sound feedback on Mac? Re: Disabling start up programs on the Mac
I am afraid you will have to be a little more specific. 1. In Lion by default every program that was running when you logout or shutdown the computer will be restarted. 2. You can mark programs to start at login via the DOCK and/or system preferences. 3. Several utility programs are started by init / Launch / cron including file sharing and printer queueing systems. Which of these are you trying to work with? Re: Disabling start up programs on the Mac
Hi Gram, About the partition removal. You get rid of it the same way you built it. Go to the utilities folder under applications then to bootcamp. start the app. there will be a button for create or remove bootcamp partition. select that and follow the directions. It is straightforward. I hope this helps. Re: Multilingual Braille tables under Lion
On Thu, 1 Sep 2011, Paul Erkens wrote: So, given the 4-byte representation of characters in utf8 unicode, a braille table could easily be made up based on that character set. This would of course imply that some braille dot patterns would occur more than once in unicode, because an accented letter in Polish, looks the same in braille as a c cedille in French. They are 2 distinct characters for the sighted, but one and the same symbol in braille. Yes. Why is it, that we don't yet have a unified unicode utf8 braille table? Any idea? Because it would be like herding cats. The International Council on English Braille (ICEB) consists of 7 countries - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, The United Kingdom and The United States. Back in (I think) 1992, the Braille Authority of North America (BANA) began looking at the problem of a unified Braille code. This code would unify separate codes used for literary Braille, mathematics, science and computer usage. After many thousands of hours of work, countless meetings, lots of politicing and a fair amount of naval-gazing on the subject of the best way to represent things in Braille, the Unified English Braille Code (UEBC), also known as Unified English Braille (UEB), was eventually adopted as an official English Braille code by ICEB in 2004. This means that it took 12 years for only 7 countries, all speaking English, to agree on a unified code, a code that none of these countries were obligated to adopt as their official code. 7 years further on, and I admit to being a bit out of tuch, I think 5 countries have officially adopted it. One of the remaining two is reportedly thinking about it, and The United States is apparently not at all interested, even though the effort to create the code began there. My point with all this is that it took 7 countries speaking the same language 12 years to develop a standard they could all live with, and 7 years later they've not all adopted it yet. Considering the infinitely more difficult task of getting a single Braille code for all known languages that everyone would be happy with, and I fear this would be simply impossible to do. Of course, I'd ove to be wrong. But to use your example, which of the two countries would be prepared to give up the symbol they're used to? Trackpad acting oddly
Hello, My trackpad has been acting really weird. If all I want is subscribe to a random podcast, of which there is afeed address on a site somewhere, how can I do that? Paul. These podcasts periodically get updated on the Vision Australia web site to provide "permanent" links since only the last several episodes are available on the feed. I posted the link and the information a little over a month ago when they started coming out with podcasts about Lion. John Panarese has also put links for this up at his macfortheblind web site of VoiceOver resources. If you don't want to subscribe via iTunes, you can go to the PodBean web site that David Woodbridge maintains: http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com/ or check out the RSS feed and download the individual episodes: feed://davidwoodbr.podbean.com/feed/ I subscribed to the podcasts in Podcaster by putting that last feed address into the field for importing new podcasts (double tap "Directory" which is fourth of 5 buttons on main screen, navigate to "import" on the "Podcast Directory" screen and double tap, then type or paste in the feed address.) If you forget this information, just Google "Vision Australia podcasts macfortheblind". HTH.
