Crash Plan

2011-08-28 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

I wanted to kick the tires on Crash Plan yesterday. For the most part
installation and backing up initially is somewhat doable. It's getting to the
selections on the left of the window that is a challenge.

My question to the hive is there a way to have a sighted person move the mouse
pointer to a location and then capture that location so that I can route the
pointer back there later and perform a mouse click action?

Thanks,

Keith

Where Is The User Library folder in Lion?

2011-08-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi I'm having a problem finding my user library. I'm in my user folder which is
my name, but unlike Snow Leopard, there's no Library folder and I have to move
something into my Application Support folder which has a specific App not found
in other App support folders. Has anyone found their user Library folder?

RE: 10.7.1 is out everyone

2011-08-28 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! I assume this preferences file you're talking about is for fixing the
com.apple.doc.extra problem. If so, I'm not sure it
would help. I had a tech from Apple help me reset my preferences over the
phone, but the second I organized my doc the way I
wanted it again, the problem came back. Now, if you're talking about a way to
fix midi playback on the other hand, I'm very
interested. For now, though, I am just using snow leopard. For my limited
skills and needs, it just seems to work better.

that is a prefference file. You might want to have VO rewrite those files,
just a thought. If you would like me to send you
an email explaining how to do that, I can. You will have to reset your
prefferences in VO, as your settings will be lost.

it did with the original release of lion. I'll definitely be sticking with snow

Re: going from an MBP to a MacBook Air

2011-08-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Anouk,

Actually, the internal speaker on the MBA really isn't bad. As Neil said, it
lacks some of the fullness of the speaker on the MBP, but I don't think it's
unacceptable at all. And it puts out a lot of volume. I know you said you
were planning to buy headphones, but thought you'd want to know that you won't
have to use them unless you want to.

Re: Where Is The User Library folder in Lion?

2011-08-28 Thread Mike Arrigo
The library folder is hiden in lion, personally I think apple made the wrong
decision with that, but it's easy to get to. In the finder, press command shift
g, this opens a dialog box where you can type the folder you want to go to.
Type ~/library note the symbols at the beginning, select ok and you will be in
the folder.

Lion: Searching Mail

2011-08-28 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
OK, this is quite strange. I'm trying to search through my unified inbox in
Mail under Lion. I have 4 accounts all total set up. I don't have View by
conversation turned on either, don't know if that really would matter,
but... So in the list of mailboxes, both in the classic view, and in the
new Lion layout, I'm set just on the over all main inbox for all accounts.

Now, if I go up to the top of the screen, interact with the toolbar, then go
all the way to the end where the search box is, say I have an e-mail from my
mother... Sylvia Gilland...

So, in the search box, I type: "Sylvia," obviously without the quotes. As
I am typing, I hear containing and it sounds like a menu popping up. If I,
after typing Sylvia, press down arrow, I get nowhere. This is with quick
nav turned off. I didn't say vo+down, I said, just down. If I press
vo+space, I hear: Sylvia highlighted. Vo up down, left and right yields
nothing. The only thing I've not yet tried is as soon as I hear that
contains whatever thing, I've not tried immediately interacting. Wonder if
that's the trick. Anyway, after typing, say in this example... Sylvia, I've
tried hitting return as well. Once I go over and look at the message table,
I see absolutely no results, when before searching, in my inbox I know from
looking, that there were about 3 or 4 messages in there from Sylvia. So, I
know for a fact, something's not working. I dono if it's me just not
knowing what I'm doing, which is most likely the case, or if something in
either Voiceover, or in Mail has glitched. I know when I had that issue
with my fan overheating I did as you all probably remember, disable indexing
with Spotlight, but, one of my friends also disabled spotlight, and his was
working past that point, although now, neither of our system's'll find mail
within the Mail app from the toolbar search box. So both him and I are
extremely perplexed. this! is really bizarre! I figure there's, gotta be
something! we're both doing wrong. the question's what?

Thanks for any help.

Chris.

ready to throw MBA out a window, can someone help?

2011-08-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I'm trying to transfer my data from my MBP to my MBa using the migration
assistant. Every time I am at the point of starting the transfer, I get an
error message that the transfer can't happen because the user account on the
MBA has the same name as the one on my MBP, go figure, given that my name is
still the same. Anyway, I've changed the account name and password, but still
get this same error. I've tried going into system prefs in the hope that I can
delete the offending account, but I can't even *see the defending account. I
thought about just deleting the user directory, but there's of course no
MacinTosh HD icon, so I seem to have no way to get to the root directory to do
that.

I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions anyone can provide.
Thanks,
Donna

Re: Lion: Searching Mail

2011-08-28 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi Chris!
Well I don't know if this will work in Lion!
And someone else has the same sort of problem as you!
And they also are using Lion!
But from your description it looks like the only thing you did not try is after
typing your search criteria [ And this is what I do in SL] is to stop
interacting with the tool bar and thats when I get the options to narrow the
search to [from, subject, whole message and others] then at the end is the
table of results!
Now in SL I do not know if there is a faster way but that is the way I've
learned to do it!
And if it works for you then alls good!

Hello,

Writing to an NTFS formatted drive doesn't work in Mac OS X, since NTFS is a
windows-only format. You'll have to reformat the drive either in XFat, or
Fat32.
I hope this helps!

more help needed with migration assistant

2011-08-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

OK, I'm back home now, and still unable to get rid of this user account. I
followed Jim's excellent instructions, but I am not allowed to delete the user
folder.

I'm really perplexed about how this is supposed to work. I mean, if you
purchase a new Mac, your name and your Apple ID are going to remain the same.
Why on earth would migration assistant expect your account to have a different
name? And what the are you supposed to do about it? If anyone has
successfully used the migration assistant, I'd love to hear how on earth you
did it.
Best,
Donna

Hi all,

I have just joined the World of Skype and I am wondering if there is a tutorial
out there that would teach me how to navigate around. I've had to set it up to
automatically start video when I receive a call because I cannot get to that
button.

Things are around sometimes and then disappear so, I just can't find any
consistency.

Did you create an account when you first got the macbook air, or are you trying

Yes, sometimes when you are in a cal, the video, and add people, hangup, hold
buttons/check boxes appear and disappear at will, you need to just keep right
and left arrowing around between the html content area and the images you hear
in the conversation window. I don't know a work around, but this has worked for
me.

One option is instead of using the migration assistant, to use time machine,
make a backup of your pro, and then load that image onto your air. That for
sure will work.. Also, if your pro is running leopard, not snow leopard, make
sure you've got the latest updated migration assistant..

Yes it is. One thing you might try is to relaunch the finder which I have to
do sometimes as sometimes my computer will say whatever was last in focus in
the finder every few minutes until I relaunch it. To do this, find finder in
the dock and press VO+shift+m to go to the context menu and press r or arrow
relaunch.. Hope that helps.

Re: ready to throw MBA out a window, can someone help?

2011-08-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Ugh! Yes, I wanted to spend some time playing with it before I moved all my
data over, and they didn't tell me not to do that at the store. Do you know if
I can restore from a time-machine backup instead?
Thanks,
Donna

Re: ready to throw MBA out a window, can someone help?

2011-08-28 Thread Donna Goodin
Thanks, Cody. Wouldn't the migration assistant have been upgraded as part of
the Leopard upgrade? Also, both the MBA and the MBP are running Leopard,
10.71. So I can just restore from the time machine backup and that will work?
Thanks,
Donna

Re: going from an MBP to a MacBook Air

2011-08-28 Thread Dan Roy
I got mine about 10 days ago. Donna, like you, I upgraded the SSD to 256, and,
like you, I am nnot totally convinced that i need to do that, but, I did it
anyway. Yes, it's expensive. I also contemplated returning it, but, I love
this expensive machine, it's not going back.

 Donna,

Looking at this, I've owned the 15in MBP and all three of the Air's, the
original incarnation and now the 2010 11in and the revised 2011 11in.

Firstly sound, if you were looking at the original 13in Air, the sound was
hopeless, with a mono single speaker I really didn't like that thing.

The 11in 2010 and 2011 models though for me solve that. there's stereo
baby built right in there, and although there's not much bass to talk of,
the sound is clear and it packs a surprising amount of punch for its size.

put against the 15in, its a notable difference in richness and output, but
against the 13in MBP, I think less so.

you do have the bass issue and if you like your tones, not just music but
Alex etc to have that depth it might make you think, but I find that once
I sit down in front of it, unless I'm working with my iMac along side the
Air, which I do every now and then, you'll not notice it.

Looking at this DVD business, lets see, presumably you're not watching
DVD's in the class room etc, so why not just leave the USB drive for that
in your hotel etc, I've seen you state that this lack of a DVD drive is a
real issue, but only as you seem to watch films, well as someone else has
said, a lot of it is downloadable now, you can also rip them, and finally,
if you're like me, why should I pay to download something I own on disk,
spend the additional $80 and get the super drive... leave it in your hotel
room and you're good to go.

I use my Air for everything when I'm not at a desk, and my iMac if I am.

The issue that a lot of folk seem to be throwing up over spec and
performance, you really need to ask yourself what you're going to be doing
with it, I find my Air faster than my MBP 15in, which I had as a late 2010
model with full processor upgrade, I think a 2.9Ghz i7 with 4Gb of RAM.
but you see most of what I do is word processing, e-mail and internet, oh
 and iTunes / watching DVD's.

I carry my MBA all around the world with me, leaving the super drive in
hotel rooms or my carry on in a plane if its a long flight.

I personally think its really the way to go if you're seriously looking to
 lighten the load.

there is an InCase sleeve for the 11in and 13in available from the Apple
online store, I use this and think its great... for whoever asked that
 question.

 HTH.

I believe there's a program called DVD Remaster that does that, though I

seem as obsolete as having a floppy d

wow, is that advisable. Your restoring an OS configured on different hardware
to a different set of hardware and probably some driver differences. Now, if
people tell me it works, great, but, I don't think it's recommended.

Personally, I used my external drive which had a complete backup of my MBP.
However, I simply copied the data folders over to the new drive replacing any
that had a conflict. However, I didn't do anything with the OS files at all.
