Games for the MacDesktop?

2011-08-05 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hello, all,

One thing I do miss on Windows is the availability of games with rich audio
settings in first-person shooting and arcade games. I've even played an
auto-racing game or two in Windows, and I still think Terraformers is one of
the most rewarding games out there, for one example.

Are there any such games for the Mac desktop computer? I do appreciate the
number of games I can play on my IPod, but there are times I would really like
to have a little diversion on my Mac Mini as well. I do have the RSG client,
and I have Terrestrial Invaders, which, for me, is a bit on the simple side.
Anyone know of any more challenging arcade games?

Thanks,
Teresa

Okay, what happened? VoiceOVer and the new mail

2011-08-05 Thread Jes Smith
Okay, list. This is really getting on my nerve.
Before I hop on my soapbox, I want y'all to know that I did find the classic
view, and checked that at one point. But whatever happened to the ability to
interact with the messages table and just look at one particular thing, such as
subject? In other words, I liked the fact that in Snow Leopard, I could
interact with the table, v o right to the subject field, then use my plain up
and down arrows and only hear the subject read, and nothing else. Now, with
this new view, I'm getting a bunch of stuff that I don't really care about. IS
there eany way to view a particular field in the new view, and avoid extraneous
speech?
Thanks.

Re: favorites bar in lion mail

2011-08-05 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Paul,

Whichever mailbox is reported as "checked" is the mailbox you will find when
you navigate to your message list. I believe the checkboxes on Mail's Favorites
bar would actually be better described as radio buttons because you can only
have one selected at a time. You'll notice if you navigate between the items on
the favorites bar, pressing VO+spacebar on one item will "uncheck" whichever
other item was previously "checked.".

Regarding your second question: Yes, one of the functions of the favorites bar
is to allow access to mailboxes if the mailbox list is closed. In addition, it
also provides a nice set of shortcuts to selected mailboxes via the
Command+1,2,3,etc keystrokes. The favorites bar can be used whether the mailbox
list is opened or closed.

HTH,
Bryan

lion mail: draft

2011-08-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi list,
While attempting to work with Lion mail efficiently throughout the past week, I
still have a few questions about lion mail.
Question 1. Once you start typing a new message and then close it with command
plus w, and then telling mail to save it as a draft, the message does indeed
appear in the drafts folder. However, I'm doing something wrong while
attempting to continue the draft. Here's what I'm doing.
a. I Go to the drafts mailbox by selecting it in the mailboxes list.
b. I then Interact with the message collumn and then with the message table
inside the column. This puts me in the message list that I can arrow past. I'm
arrowing through my drafts.
c. Once the draft that I want to continue working on is found, I tab over to
the message content pain.
d. Here, I v o right, from the header group to the message text.
e. I then Turn off quicknav, find the bottom of the text and continue typing.

Now, each letter I press, causes the mac boom to sound. What am I missing here?
I'd like to continue typing, but that won't work. Any ideas how to handle this?

Paul.

Hi thought the classic view was still suppose to let you do exactly what you
want, i.e. view just one column such as subject as you arrow through your list.
When I raised that question some days back, the response was that classic view
will let you do that. Is it possible you have thread viewing turned on and that
makes a difference?

Re: favorites bar in lion mail

2011-08-05 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Brian and list,

I managed to drag my private inbox to the favorites bar, so that it is easily
reachable. I learned how to do that on this list. It is very useful, given the
command 1 etc options. But now, is it possible to remove an item present in the
favorites bar? There is an aggregate inbox that I'd like to get rid of, and
also the sent items item is of little use to me in the favorites bar. Here's
what I tried so far.
1. Delete and fn delete, with the v o cursor on the mailbox to remove, in the
favorites bar. . However, since mail cannot know where the voiceover cursor is,
this won't do it.
2. I moved the mouse to the favorites bar and to the mailbox I wanted to
remove. V o command f5 gets the mouse pointer over to where the v o cursor is.
I checked the mouse position with v o f5. Then, I held down control and pressed
down the bottom left corner of the trackpad. This won't remove the mailbox
intended, from the favorites bar though. Option click won't either.
3. Having the mouse on the mailbox name I want to remove from the favorites
bar, clicking the mouse and attempting a context menu with v o shift m, won't
do the job either.

So, I think one should drag the mailbox off of the favorites bar to get rid of
it there. Is that true? Where would a sighted person drop it on the screen? Can
we get to an empty spot on the lion mail screen using voiceover? Interested to
know.

Paul.

Need help setting up a trial of DVD Remaster

2011-08-05 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi, Guys. I want to play with a trial of DVD Remaster, but I have a question or
two.
I see a DVD remaster app and a fairmount app along with a fair mount folder.
What do I do with the fair mount stuff? do I copy both to the applications
folder along with the DVD Remaster app?
I can't find any how to install info on their web site. Lots of faqs, but
nothing on how to install.
I ran the fair mount app from the DVD remaster folder, but then couldn't figure
out how to get out of it short of forcing a shutdown of the app.
The app looks very accessible. Just not sure how to set fair mount up.
Thanks.

Re: favorites bar in lion mail

2011-08-05 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Paul,

The favorites bar contains shortcuts or "aliases" to the actual mailboxes. What
you will want to do is use VO drag-and drop. Move the item from the favorites
bar to the mailbox list with VO-comma and VO-period to drag and drop
respectively.

Re: Getting to the top or bottom of a list

2011-08-05 Thread Shen
I wish Apple didn't remove the Jump command.
This might be more of a convenience than usability. But I would have preferred
the Jump command. If you are on the sender column, using the jump command takes
you to the top or bottom of the table without leaving that column.
Using VO-Shift-Home or End takes you to the first row and column, and the last
row and column. This takes you away from the column you were in. A bit annoying
since you now have to find your way back to the column you were working within.

tip: drag and drop with voiceover

2011-08-05 Thread Paul Erkens
For those of you who haven't come across it yet: drag and drop is now a whole
lot easier than it used to be in sl. We used to do the mouse movement manually,
but that is no longer necessary. Just put the vo cursor on the item to drag, a
mailbox for example, press vo comma to mark the item for dragging, then move to
the destination with the v o cursor, and press v o period to drop the item
there. After pressing v o period, you will hear voiceover dragging the item.
The sound stops when the drag is completed. Beautiful feature in lion.
Paul.

Hello Mary,

Prizmo for the Mac is an application you can buy through the Mac Appstore. It
handles both scanning and OCR, and it is more or less usable with VoiceOver,
but way too complicated to be worth the effort for a VoiceOver user.

Cheers,

Hi there!
Does the jump command vo+shift+j no longer work in Lion?
And I've set up a keyboard shortcut for me!
All I have to press is right option and either 1 or 2 to go from bottom to top
and vice versor!
You could set up either a trackpad or numpad version, which ever you prefer!

Re: Looking for an accessible DVD ripper

2011-08-05 Thread Chris Blouch
Sorry for the delay, had to find a DVD to try this with as it's been a
while. Generally the buttons you need appear in the window after a DVD
has been inserted and mounted. The first thing will be the name of the
folder which is usually the name of the DVD. You can rename this to
anything you want. Next will be a RIP button, followed by an unlabeled
button which is eject. After that is the compress button which shows up
twice, first as an unlabeled button and then again as a button called
Compress. Both do the same thing. I haven't played with Compress.

gives no buttons. It's just an empty control that you can interact with, but
then one can't do anything there. The rest of the interface looks really simple
and promising though. The rest of the screen is uncluttered and barely contains
anything more than a progress indicator. How do you rip a dvd yourself with it?
 Interested to hear.

Re: back to previous version of itunes

2011-08-05 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi Denise
I found this post from Esther!
hth Colin

Have you tried going to Apple's software downloads site? Assuming you are
looking for laptop distributions, this would be:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/#portablecomputers
Use the web item rotor shortcut VO-U and set the rotor (pressing Up and Left
arrow keys) to Headings. You'll find listings for both iTunes 10.4 and 10.3.1.

However, the process of downgrading requires you to also delete files from your
system's /Library/Receipts folder and also the associated preference file
(com.apple.iTunes.plist) in the Library/Preferences folder of your user
account. If you have a Time Machine backup of your older iTunes library,
it's probably simpler to restore iTunes that backup. The reason that you need
to make these additional file deletions is that your system's Software Updater
checks your receipts to determine what version of each application you are
running, what other dependencies that application version needs, and when you
need a new download version. If you "fix" things by hand in such a way as to
invalidate the current system records of what you have installed, you could run
into problems. For example, iTunes uses QuickTime to play and record music,
but that dependency is not something you need to know about -- unless you break
something in the system. The reason you need to delete the
.plist file is because the new version of iTunes may have settings for features
that are not in the old preference file.

I have not tried rolling back any of my versions of iTunes, but if you want to
try it, I will point you to an appletoolbox.com web page with instructions for
downgrading from iTunes 10.0.1 to 10.0 that outlines the likely steps you will
need to take. I'm going to assume that your iTunes downgrade is independent of
any system update from Snow Leopard to Lion. Here's theappletoolbox.com web
page link:

I'd be happier if I could find one specifically for downgrading from 10.4 to
10.3.1, but I haven't read anything that covers that. The old MacFixit site
(before they sold it to CNet and the quality of content dropped) would probably
have covered a topic like that. But it has been two years since that site was
available, and the current site does not cover this subject.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: scrivner

2011-08-05 Thread Adie
Hello

I too had an exchange of emails with the author. He said that the
version which was about to come out was probably going to be better, I
think it was.2. Haven't checked the site for couple of weeks to see if
it's up there yet, but you can reach it by googling Scrivener.

The author did say he had made a lot of the buttons, more accessible
after having had some input from a VO user, I think I can guess who
that was now:) but he would gladly work to improve it even more if I
had a go at the free trial and had any comments.

I must say he seems like a really decent bloke and very keen to help
in any way.

help with garage band...

2011-08-05 Thread Cody
Hi listers,

I'm hoping someone like Ricardo or maybe Mike Arigo might be able to skype me
at some point and give me some one on one training with garage band. Ricardo
has made some awesome tutorials, but I find I learn better by actually working
with another person...

If I can provide more detail let me know and I will..

Hi,

I have seen that occasionally as well. In those cases, you often can still use
the VO-shift-cmd toggle for mouse down then mouse up and the drag will work as
it should.

Later…

Need headers on some pages but not others in same Pages document

2011-08-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs
the subject says it all. My wife, who is sighted, is trying to create
a document in Pages that has headers on some of the pages but not
all. The idea is that she will eventually want to put this entire
document into PDF. Since we don't have Acrobat, creating multiple
documents in Pages, some with headers and some without for eventual
integration into a single PDF document is not an option. Is it
possible to turn headers on and off for individual pages instead of
treating headers as an all or nothing global thing? We have iWork
9.0.

thanks,
Kevin

Hello,

Yes, you will have to setup another iTunes library. Lol. It shouldn't be too
painful. When you launch iTunes, hold down the option key. You will be asked
to choose or create an iTunes library. Here you create one for yourself. Once
you've created this library, you and Kliph will need to hold down option while
iTunes is opening to pick his/her library.

Re: cannoscan lide 600f and Mac ocr programs

Mary,

Frankly, I think for most blind users the best choice right now is probably
Docu Scan Plus. I have also used Eye-Pal, and there is too little that you
can actually do with it considering the price.

The 600f is working, but the ocr programs don't seem to be nearly as
flexible and feature rich as Omnipage for Windows. Specifically, it does not
seem possible to select portions of the image that you want ocr done on. But
that's not a voice over issue, so not for the list. It is surprising there
isn't at least one full featured scanning program for the Mac.

Re: scrivner

2011-08-05 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Please don't confuse it with a normal text editor. Scrivener is much more
complex. Pages or Textedit is fine to write simple textes like letters or maybe
a Poem. But in Scrivener you are able to have a whole book project including
research, your character sketch, scene sketch and so forth. And at the end you
can export it in a novel format to send your work to publishing houses. Of
course in a way you can do all this in Pages too. But in Scrivener it's much
easier.

Re: Need headers on some pages but not others in same Pages document

2011-08-05 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'll let Apple do the explaining for this one. It will save typing.

• When in Pages, go up to the Help menu and choose Pages Help.
• Type Header into the Search field.
• Of the 13 items that will appear, click on the using Headers and Footers.
• She can read that and within that section, there is a link for Changing
Headers within Sections.

She will be using the Inspector to do this but from everything that I've read,
it should do what you're asking.

HTH.

What makes you say that? VueScan and ABBYY FineReader work seamlessly together
once they are set up correctly. Also, DocuScan only handles English and there
are many Blind Mac users who require other languages. I'm tired of the attitude
that English is the only language that matters.

Re: back to previous version of itunes

2011-08-05 Thread Dan Roy
Well, I am pushing my luck here, but, I have 3 backups of my system.

Unfortunately, with Lion, Apple doesn't let you delete the iTunes.app file.
However, since I do have 3 backups, i decided to take a chance.

I booted up from 1 of my external backups and then deleted the iTunes.app file
and the only other file I deleted was the library file called
"iTunes Library.Itl

yes, I am sure there are good reasons to delete the preference files as well,
but, I wanted to see if I could get away without doing it.

Next, I installed iTunes 10.3.1 and rebuilt the library. So far, all appears
to be well.

if there's a problem, I will be able to delete the library and preference files
if necessary.

Wow, iTunes is back to working normally again. I had forgotten just how much
faster it was before.

So, if you have a clone or 2 of your existing setup, I urge you to give it a
try.

Re: Resizing BootCamp Partition.

2011-08-05 Thread Georges Zaynoun

From where to get the winclone utility?
Is it possible to whipe the entire hard disk, make a windows unattended
install on the mac then clone with winclone, reinstall lion on the
entire hd deleting all what is windows, create a bootcamp partition in
the size we want and finally use winclone to get windows back on that

Why this very long and convoluted method? Simply because I don't want

Hi!

I wonder if it is possible after windows install to resize the bootcamp
partition to be either smaller or larger, I know this should affect the
macintosh hd partition consequently as well but this is what I am
thinking of at the time, resizing after installation is done, thanks.
