Re: Question about Lion from the app store?
Howdy, sure it appears is a way to create your own disk from the Lion disk you get from the Mac App Store. below is a post from OS X Daily posted last fortnight. perhaps it could be of help. here it goes: -- begin post --- Mac OS X Lion is around the corner, and mixed in with the excitement is some frustration based on a misunderstanding of the system requirements. The latest bout of frustration comes from a post on MacRumorstitled “Lion Clean Install Requires Snow Leopard Disk?” that apparently quotes Steve Jobs responding to a users question regarding a clean install: The sender has a good question, and Steve Jobs answers correctly in that Lion requires Snow Leopard to install. This seems to have been improperly interpreted by some as that Mac OS X Lion can not be used to perform any“clean install” (for clarification: a clean installation of Lion would be a fresh install of Lion as the only operating system on a hard drive or partition, not an upgrade over a previously installed OS). I am writing this to clarify that you can perform a clean install of Lion, to show you I did so, and also to explain some of the potential confusion which has led to the misunderstanding and flame-war around the web. Proof of the Lion Clean Install We’ll start off with the good stuff since this is what everyone seems concerned about. Yes you can create a fresh clean install of Lion. In fact, many of us who are running Lion Developer Preview have performed clean installs. The only requirement for where a clean Lion installation is allowed is the existence of a target blank partition or hard drive that is properly formatted HFS+, this is the same requirement for past clean Mac OS X installs. I did precisely this in my post explaining how to dual boot Mac OS X Lion and Snow Leopard. I won’t walk through that entire post again, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that I created a separate partition for Lion, and performed a clean install of Lion on that partition, it was not an upgrade of Snow Leopard. Here are the two separate OS X installations side by side in the Startup Disk preference panel: You can also even create your own Lion boot install DVD with the package you download from the Mac App Store. Admittedly that is not an official way to do things, but it does work to install a fresh clean version of Lion on any hard drive as well. Why does Steve Jobs say you need to have Snow Leopard then? Because you do. The reason you need Snow Leopard is due to Lion being distributed only through the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store requires Mac OS X 10.6.6, thus installing Lion requires you to have Snow Leopard so that you can open App Store and download Mac OS X Lion. That is why Mac OS X 10.6.6 Snow Leopard is listed in the OS X Lion System Requirements, this does not mean you can only upgrade Snow Leopard. I can’t speak for Steve Jobs here, but I imagine his short response is aimed at the ‘crash’ aspect of the users question, whereas if your hard drive completely failed and you had no access to the Lion recovery partition or another Mac, then yes you would need to reinstall Snow Leopard first because that is how you download Lion. Potential Caveats There’s always a caveat, because remember that Lion isn’t publicly available yet. Due to this, it’s possible Apple will change the install behavior in time for the GM and final release next month, but I find that very unlikely. All Developer Previews of Lion have included the ability to perform a clean OS X Lion installation on either a separate hard drive or separate partition, this is handled from Snow Leopard, and this works without incident. Summary of Lion’s Clean Install and Snow Leopard Requirements OK let’s review what we know: You need Mac OS X 10.6.6 or greater to download Mac OS X 10.7 Lion from the Mac App Store The Mac App Store is why 10.6.6 is listed as a system requirement for 10.7 Lion requires Snow Leopard to download, but Lion does not require you to upgrade over an existing Snow Leopard installation Once you have downloaded Lion from the App Store, you start the installation process within Snow Leopard (unless you use an unofficial boot DVD) The OS X Lion Installer allows clean installs on new hard drives or new partitions (see image at the very top of post) if the target installation drive is blank You can also unofficially create your own bootable Lion installation DVD and perform a clean install through that (it’s not supported by Apple, but this would remove the Snow Leopard requirement completely) Unless Apple removes the ability to change the target disk for Lion to install on, or removes the dmg file from the downloaded package, all of this should stay the same Hopefully this clarifies things a bit, and hopefully this cools down some of the frustration. Let me know if you have any questions. --- end post -- Sincerely, Ishe www.chinyo
Re: voiceover web item rotor not displaying m.facebook.com page refreshes
thats not entirely correct. it did it on other parts of the site (not just search). it took finally terminating webkit/safari and restarting just to get things working again. it seems that once this problem started, it affected operations on other open tabs as well. That wasn't the only part of the rotor affected. links wouldn't display. In fact, all rotors under web items (page controls, tables, links, headers, even images all stated zero items. yet, if I manually sifted through the page, there were like 100 or so links, 2 dozen images and a number of headers. until today, this had never happened before and the only website it happened on initially was m.facebook.com (and quickly affected the rest of the browser requiring a restart). so, its either a never before seen bug, or a breakage in Facebook causing corruption of the browser communications with the voiceover API. Unfortunately, this is not my area of expertise and I can only make gross assumptions at this point. -Eric On Jul 6, 2011, at 9:48 PM, Shen wrote: > Sounds like you tried doing a search for friends and it is not finding any > results. Wouldn't a braille keyboard be nice?
I was just thinking... I wonder if there is a way to somehow type on my macbook as if it were a braille keyboard. for example, the letters f d and s would be dots 1, 2, and 3, and j k and l be dots 4, 5, and 6. So if I wanted to type, say the letter d, I'd hit the letters f, j and k all together. If I wanted say an h, I'd hit the letters f, d, and k all together, etc. Obviously, I'd want it to be global where I could do this regardless what window had fovus while still being able to maintain normal voiceover navigation. Do you all see this as something I should write apple some feedback about? I think this would be a really full-on feature, provided that there isn't already, even with a 3rd party app or keyboard layout to do this. RE: Wouldn't a braille keyboard be nice?
I think it would be lots more practicle to have a cute little USB or bluetooth Braille keyboard. If there were such a device, assuming it was affordible, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I just can't imagine pressing multiple typing keys to make the braille letters. My hands wouldn't do that. But a USB or bluetooth braille keyboard would probably be super tiny and portible. Re: Wouldn't a braille keyboard be nice?
Here are a couple usb options, though I would much prefer bluetooth as well, since it could then be used with the iTouch (assuming it shows as a standard keyboard). I actually found one, but it is $295: http://www.visioncue.com/braille-displays/optelec-easylink-braille-keyboard.html USB options: http://www.portset.co.uk/braillekey1.htm http://www.livingmadeeasy.org.uk/communication/braille-keyboards-p/ht-braille-keyboard-0105575-2962-information.htm http://www.caretec.at/Electronics.1192.0.html?&cHash=80ed00b898&detail=1821 On 7/7/11, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Hi, > > couldn't such a keyboard be connected via bluetooth as well. Hmm. Maybe they do, but how expensive is it? Also, I thought it only worked with the Ios devices: the ITouch and the IPhone. I could be wrong, though. Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner
Hello List, JUst some thoughts on prepairing for Lion. I set up CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and I really love it. It's extremely easy to use and it's 100% accessible for VO users. Not only is it easy to make a complete clone, or a incremental backup, it's also really easy to boot from and use it on the external drive. The log details are well written andeasy to understand. Restoring the original drive is also really easy to do. CCC is produced on a shareware kind of concept and it uses a donation request field. This is available within CCC as well as on the site. http://www.bombich.com/ So, why am I posting this? In light of Lion's upcoming launch, I just wanted to really be prepared. No matter what you use as a backup utility, CCC or Super Duper or any other backup package, I strongly suggest that you cover all bases and be completely ready for the new exciting move to Lion! Re: accessible pitch correction software
I was unaware that Auto tune even was accessible or not, compatible with the Mac platform. That is totally! cool! I very! very! heavily rely on it with my windows audio production machine in sonar. If I could get something that would basically automatically with no configuration act as a VST and do the same thing, that would be incredible! Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner
Hello Christopher, Have fun getting CCC to work for you, I think you'll love it. Here's a little hint for all us VoiceOver users. Once you've set up CCC and have entered your password to start what ever process you are using, for example, a complete clone, here's a way to make sure you are able to track what's going on. After the process has started, just toggle VO off then back on. Then you will be in the actual results window. I've tried using the keyboard to switch to the actual activity window, but for some reason, I cant get it to work. So again, just toggle VO off and then back on to be where the action is. Then just VO right or left to examine the different parts of the activity as it's taking place. In the past, I've used Super Duper and Time MAchine. So I decided to take a really close look at CCC. In my humble opinion, CCC tops them all. Again, just how I see it. HTH! Dan On Jul 7, 2011, at 9:37 AM, Christopher-Mark Gilland wrote: > Wow, Dan! Thanks for such a great heads up about CCC. Thanks for this. I installed CCC a couple of weeks ago, but haven't actually tried to use it yet. I'm sure I'll be checking it out before Lion happens; am especially hoping that using something like CCC will preserve my app preferences for Adium and things of that nature. I have a little external hard drive that I just got for the mac. I've used it for time machine backups; can I use that same drive with CCCas well? I still don't understand everything about the mac, so will probably still ask stupid questions from time to time. Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner
Hello, You can make different backups. Generally speaking, CCC completely copies your drive from one drive to another. Not just one file, the actual clone. Of course you can also backup to dmg files as well and restore as well, this would give your single file inclosure. The documentation is concise and really clearly lays out all the scenarios for backup and restore. HTH! RE: Looking for the most accessible twitter client
I'd Definitely go for the one I can't spell or pronounce. I love everything about that app except its name. LOL! I'm still not an expert in using it, but I tried Syrinx for about half an hour, and was thoroughly confused, so just went back to the other one. Too bad we can't rename it to something more pleasant and easy to spell, but yeah, I'd strongly recommend you go for that one. If I could figure it out, anyone can. Good luck! Hello, Generally speaking, CCC will truly make a clone of your drive, so all settings will be preserved. You can then boot from your machines hard drive or the bootable external drive. Oh Wow! I must have really missed something when I tried playing with syrinx. It made absolutely no sense to me. The other one, once you're in the right table, couldn't be simpler. You use plain arrow keys to scroll through tweets and command left and right arrow to change tabs. I'd be open to trying syrinx again, but especially as a newbie, it made absolutely no sense to me. Re: Adium, Was: Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner
I know that, but I was saying without CCC in the equasion. I meant more or less just in Adium itself, if I want my events and event actions backed up, where in my finder do I navigate, what file/folders do I need to back up, and later, how would I reimport 'em? Again, I know CCC will back this up, but I[m getting at more specifically with Adium itself, how do I do this? that's why I changed the subject of the post. Re: Looking for the most accessible twitter client
The thing about Syrinx you gotta understand which throws a lot of people is, yeah, if you go to the top of the screen then vo+right arrow, you'll get an edit box, and yeah you can then interact with the next and vo+down arrow to see all the tweets from your followers, but you can't do much with that text area. what you actually wanna do, is instead of interacting with that text area as most people unknowingly try doing, if you don't, but instead just keep hitting vo+right arrow, you'll get to an actual table with all your tweets. Now, if you interact with this, that's! where the magic is. RE: Looking for the most accessible twitter client
Hmm. Perhaps I'll have to give Syrinx another try at some point, but over all, the other 1 makes perfect sense and does exactly what I want it to, and whatever features it doesn't have, I haven't missed them yet. I still prefer to use Qwitter for the most part, but am using my macbook as a backup until qwitter is updated to work with twitter's new authorization scheme. So yeah, the client that isn't syrinx is meeting my needs just fine, but I might be brave and try it again at some point. Once I got to that table you spoke of, how would I switch between buffers in syrinx, and what about sending tweets and stuff? I guess it just wasn't intuitive enough for my state of mac newbieness. Re: Looking for the most accessible twitter client
I think command+N is for a new tweet. It's either that're command+T. It's been a while since I've used Syrinx, so I'm a little rusty on the command shortcut keys, but they're all in the menu bar, I promise you. As for switching buffers, I think if I understand correctly, the latest, most recent version has checkboxes you can check if you wanna only view DM's, mentions, etc. Then to view everything again all in one unified table, just make sure all the boxes are unchecked. I know my friend Ben uses Syrinx and absolutely loves it. And he likes it mainly for that reason that switching buffers was so easy. Ben, if you could chime in here, and give Missy a hand with this, I'm sure she'd really appreciate it. Now, if you interact with this, that's! where the magic is. Re: Is This Possible And How?
Usually you can only format local drives. Why do you need to format it if you can already access it? You can format a drive on the Mac but it only does FAT and exFAT, not NTFS. I guess I missed that last part in your original email that you wanted to access the drive on your Mac from your PC to format it, not to access the files. I know with laptops you could boot up in Target mode by holding down the T key which turned the laptop into a very expensive external firewire hard drive. You could then hook it up to a PC's firewire port and do whatever you want to the internal drive. Generally formatting will always require local hard wired access to the hard drive for the machine that is doing the formatting. CB On 7/7/11 12:10 PM, Georges Zaynoun wrote: I managed to see the bootcamp drive in my computer from the pc running xp among the drives after sharing it thanks to your instructions but is there anything additional I can do so I can format it remotely from the connected windows pc? Original message: You can find that in the Preference Network pane on your Mac. The Status will say Connected and then continue on to read the IP address. It's also repeated further down after the text "IP Address". CB On 7/6/11 5:58 PM, Georges Zaynoun wrote: Ok, then how do I know which address did the mac get from my router? Thanks. Original message: Over a network you can mount Mac file shares on your PC. On the Mac you'll need to turn on File Sharing in the Sharing Preference and go to Options to turn on Share files and folders using SMB and then enable which accounts on your mac are allowed in from Windows. Once all that is done from your windows side you can just connect a new network drive with your Mac's address. So on the PC you would connect to something like 192.168.xx.yy\username and then chose to connect using a different user name and it will prompt you for the mac username/password. So my username is just cblouch so I connect to //192.168.xx.yy/cblouch where xx and yy are my actual IP address and the username is cblouch with whatever the password is I use on the Mac. After that you should have a new drive letter and be able to access all the files and folders in your username folder on your Mac. CB On 7/6/11 12:32 PM, Georges Zaynoun wrote: Hello! Hello Dan, Thank you for some really great info. Just curious, you wrote that you believe Carbon Copy to be better than SuperDuper. Any major reasons for this or is it just the overall feel of the carbon copy application. Please do not interpret my question as being provocative; I just wanted your thoughts on this particular conclusion. Thank you. Hello, After you start CCC and have everything set up for your incremental backup You would probably have to examine the table that contains everything to be backed up and just select what you want. Hello, No problem at all. While I know that many people really love Super Duper, that wasn't my experience. I had some really funky things go drastically wrong with Super Duper a few years back and so I shied away from it. Plus I like the completely uncluttered screen in CCC. I don't know that this really has anything to do with it or not, but over the years, I've done a lot within the Unix and Linux environments, as well as really getting in to the terminal in OS X. HTH! possibly getting back to the mac
Hi everyone, I have been away from the mac community since april 2010 (although i did buy an iphone in september'. I am thinking of getting back into it when the new macbook air is released and if it fullfills the hopes that I have for it. I have heard rumors that it will be released nearly immediately with mac osx lion, has anyone heard confirmation about this= I was also wondering if all the standard apple apps will still be accessible within lion and if anyone knows if there will also be a new iwork version soon. Furthermore there were a few programs that I wanted to use on the mac but were not accessible or not all THAt accessible at the time. For example at that time there was no really good usenet client or a client to play online game swith )muds'. I was wondering if this has changed now. I was also wondering if garageband is now accessible and if the seem is true for protools= Vuze )for torrents' didnt really work back then, i was wondering if this is still the case. I know we had just gotten finereader when I stopped using hte mac but that it only was a light version and a version 9 at that, i was wondering if there are now any more ocr offerings on the mac platform= A lot of questions I know but it might help me to decide wether or not to get back onto the mac wagon. It doesn't actually need Snow Leopard to run the installer and you can apparently boot it from either a DVD or a USB drive. Re: watching a specific hashtag in YoruFukurou
Hi John. If you put the tag in to your search tab, it should stay there until you replace it with something else. Alternatively, you could create a new search tab for that tag. Do command p to bring up the tab manager, and you can create new tabs from there. HTH Darcy On 2011-07-06, at 9:22 PM, John D. Re: lion
Hello Matt: If you go into the Apple menu (VO M) and down arrow until you come to App store and press enter, you can give it a look yourself. It works a lot like the iTunes store and the App store for the I devices. It's very similar. hth On Jul 7, 2011, at 10:14 PM, Matt Dierckens wrote: > Hi guys, I promise this is the only time I am going to ask this. Re: Restoring files from a Time Machine Backup
I've done this several times simply by copying the backed up file over the original on the main drive. On Jul 7, 2011, at 9:46 PM, Paul Hunt wrote: > Hello everyone. Hello List, Hey Mike, I'm going to try the flash drive approach as well. I'm really looking forward to Lion and all it it will bring to us Mac users. Hi! Heard on this list that holding the t key while starting the mac makes it like a firewire external hard disk, if this is true are there usb to firewire adapters or must I use firewire at both sides? Re: [Bulk] Re: Will It Be Easy To Install Lion?
I do have a few questions: 1. I've lost my Snowleopard disks. Is that a problem regarding Lion? 2. Where do I get Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloaner? 3. I also can't find my iWork discs. Is that a possible problem. I'd rather not make a dual boot situation. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Get Your Mac Ready for Lion (From Macworld)
Sorry this is not VoiceOver related. I was listening to the Twit network a couple of days ago. They said that when something has been release as a Golden Master, typically it means the final release to the public will happen anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.
